Predicting The Suitable Habitats Of Alosimus Marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) And Evaluating Its Potential Distribution In Relation To Geographical And Climatic Barriers, Muhammed Ari̇f Demi̇r, Mahmut Kabalak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The main objective of this study was to predict the ecological requirements of Alosimus marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880), for which limited ecological information is available, and to predict possible suitable habitats under current conditions and different future scenarios. An ensemble model-based approach, combining multiple algorithms (GAM, GLM, MARS, MaxEnt), was used to predict suitable habitats for this species using bioclimatic, topographic and land cover variables. The models indicated that the elevation variable among the topography variables, BIO15 (precipitation seasonality) and BIO4 (temperature seasonality) among the bioclimatic variables, and the cropland variable (cultivated and managed vegetation cover) among the land cover variables …

Sk8r Skull is a single player video game where players must traverse the environment as a skull on a skateboard, in an effort to defeat the wizard who has stolen the rest of the skull’s body. Players must move, destroy, and grind their way through the level in order to reach the wizard. By traversing the area, players will learn the mechanics of the game, as well as some of the in-game world’s backstory. The production of Sk8r Skull was driven by examining game feel, and the “flow” state.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains one of the most aggressive and therapeutically challenging breast cancer subtypes. In their recent study, Cao et al introduced a B7H3-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell with constitutive inducible co-stimulator (ICOS) expression (ICOS-B7H3-CAR-T), which demonstrated eradication of TNBC, including metastases, in preclinical models. These CAR-T cells exploit the expression of ICOS ligand on TNBC cells, enhancing antitumor cytotoxicity through ICOS signaling. Compared with conventional B7H3-CAR-T cells, the ICOS-B7H3-CAR-T cells exhibited superior antitumor efficacy, increased cytokine secretion, and prolonged survival in xenograft murine models. This study highlights ICOS as a promising co-stimulatory molecule for improving CAR-T …

Accurate detection of malignant transformation in oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) is crucial for guiding effective treatment and improving patient management. This study evaluates the potential of MET-binding peptide-indocyanine green (cMBP-ICG), a mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET)-targeted near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIRFI) probe, for biopsy site selection in OPMDs. Preclinical results demonstrate the superior accuracy of NIRFI-assisted biopsy over conventional oral examination (COE)-based biopsy in detecting high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and reducing missed detection rates. In a clinical trial with 50 patients, NIRFI-assisted biopsy achieves significantly higher diagnostic accuracy compared to COE-based biopsy (91% vs. 72%, p = …

The current inventories of elasmobranchs in the Sea of Marmara have some taxonomic problems that need to be solved. One problematic species in the elasmobranch fauna of the region is Raja clavata Linnaeus, 1758, and atypically coloured specimens of this skate species may have been misidentified in the past as congeners or closely related species. The present results show that R. asterias may be a misidentified species of the family Rajidae due to confusion with the atypically coloured R. clavata. As taxonomy is central to the integration of data sources in the context of biodiversity research and management of any …

Using drones with thermal sensors can be an effective tool in finding and collecting livestock from summer mountain ranges in the West. Drones can complete searches in much less time than required on horseback in demonstrated areas. Using drones reduces the workload of the rider and horse, saving time and energy and reducing the risk of injury. With proper training and certification, livestock producers can use drones to locate cattle and perform many other cost-cutting operations.

Targeting the dependency of MLL-rearranged (MLLr) leukemias on menin with small molecule inhibitors has opened new therapeutic strategies for these poor-prognosis diseases. However, the rapid development of menin inhibitor resistance calls for combinatory strategies to improve responses and prevent resistance. Here we show that leukemia stem cells (LSCs) of MLLr acute myeloid leukemia (AML) exhibit enhanced guanine nucleotide biosynthesis, the inhibition of which leads to myeloid differentiation and sensitization to menin inhibitors. Mechanistically, targeting inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase 2 (IMPDH2) reduces guanine nucleotides and rRNA transcription, leading to reduced protein expression of LEDGF and menin. Consequently, the formation and chromatin binding …

Recurrent pregnancy loss, characterized by two or more failed clinical pregnancies, poses a significant challenge to reproductive health. In addition to embryo quality and endometrial function, proper oviduct function is also essential for successful pregnancy establishment. Therefore, structural abnormalities or inflammation resulting from infection in the oviduct may impede the transport of embryos to the endometrium, thereby increasing the risk of miscarriage. However, our understanding of the biological processes that preserve the oviductal cellular structure and functional integrity is limited. Here, we report that autophagy-related protein ATG14 plays a crucial role in maintaining the cellular integrity of the oviduct by …

This updated Heart Valve Collaboratory framework addresses the growing concern for transcatheter valve failure (TVF) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). With the increasing volume of redo-TAV and surgical TAV explantation, there is a critical need for standardized pathways and protocols for evaluating TVF using echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography. This document clarifies prior definitions of bioprosthetic valve deterioration and bioprosthetic valve failure in a practical, imaging directed context for TAVR. It discusses various imaging modalities for diagnosing TVF, including echocardiography, cardiac CT angiography, cardiac magnetic resonance, and positron emission tomography/CT. Recommendations are provided on the systematic imaging …

Dried Blood Spots To Assess Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health, Tyler A Jacobson, Mark D Huffman, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Dried blood spot sampling offers a scalable strategy to close diagnostic gaps and improve global surveillance for cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome. However, assay performance and the extent of validity vary widely between biomarkers used in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health assessment under different settings and have not been well described. To fill this gap, we conducted a systematic search of the literature and a narrative synthesis through April 2024 and included reports with laboratory or field validation measuring biomarkers that can be used in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health assessment. We categorized assays into categories based on laboratory validation: excellent performance (r>0.95 with gold standard methods and …

Targeting School Shootings: Using Three Warning Signs - Animal Abuse, Domestic Violence, And Conduct Disorder - To Help Prevent Massacres, Phyllis Coleman
Widener Commonwealth Law Review
Whether packing a superhero lunchbox for their five-year-old’s first day in a public kindergarten just down the block or preparing their twenty-two-year-old for his freshman year at an Ivy League law school 2,000 miles away, parents across the country are terrified by images of panicked children running from schools while an active shooter tries to slaughter as many students, faculty, and staff as he can. But, despite these widespread fears, and numerous governmental and other investigative studies, the only real consensus seems to be that these are horrific, destructive attacks that should stop. The difficulty lies in finding agreement about …

Northern Red-Legged Frog Use Of A New Under-Road Crossing And Adjacent Upland Habitat, Alyson W. Yates, Catherine De Rivera
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
A population of northern red-legged frogs (Rana aurora) located in northwest Portland must make a perilous crossing over U.S. Hwy 30 to access their breeding habitat in the floodplain of the Willamette River. To address the significant frog mortality that has historically resulted from this seasonal crossing, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife managed the installation of an under-road crossing structure, completed in October 2024. To date, no studies have documented the effectiveness of crossing structures installed for R. aurora use, and few studies have examined their effectiveness for amphibians after installation. To meet these needs, our research will …

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy that is always fatal to members of the deer family (Cervidae). CWD poses a unique challenge for wildlife managers as there is no cure or treatment for infected individuals, it remains transmissible and persistent in the environment, and symptoms become evident only after a long incubation period. The disease has yet to be detected in Oregon. CWD can impact trophic systems, economies, and sources of first foods. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) CWD management plan includes increased surveillance through diversified sampling efforts, and public education and outreach. Monitoring …
