Native Maintenance Booklet, Plaster Creek Stewards Apr 2025

Native Maintenance Booklet, Plaster Creek Stewards

Print Materials

Your new garden is an ecological haven for pollinators. By replacing grass with native plants, you will be providing food and a resilient habitat for bees, butterflies, birds, and so much more. Many of our native insects rely on these native plants to survive and reproduce, and many birds rely on these insects to reproduce and feed their young. By bringing these plants back into our yards, we are giving them a huge helping hand. This booklet provides details on maintaining Michigan native landscapes, including recommended maintenance schedules, identifying native plants versus weeds, and garden advocacy suggestions.

Can Belief Be Compelled? Evidence From Salem, Stewart Justman Apr 2025

Can Belief Be Compelled? Evidence From Salem, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

In his Letter Concerning Toleration Locke argues forcefully that belief cannot be compelled under any circumstances. I put this proposition to the test by examining false confessions extracted during the Salem witch-hunt only three years after Locke’s letter was translated into English. Evidence in the Salem records—in particular, a deposition signed by six accused witches—establishes that a number of confessors believed their own false narratives at the time they offered them. Of great psychological interest, these cases give us a sense of what the Salem hysteria felt like to those engulfed by it. They also invalidate Locke’s claim that belief …

Orpheus, Spring 2025: Porchswing, University Of Dayton Apr 2025

Orpheus, Spring 2025: Porchswing, University Of Dayton

Orpheus: UD's Literary and Artistic Magazine

From Melina Blank, literary editor: Porchswing: According to Google, it’s “a swing on a porch usually made of wood leaving space for two people to sit and swing.” To Orpheus, it is the warm breath of familiarity that hums in one’s soul. The soul knows just about everything that inspires it, transfixes it, guides it. Home, a word we make sense of in terms of physical place, is not so definitively tangible. Instead, what inspires and transfixes and guides us could very well be a person, a song, a belief, a feeling.

If I didn’t know any better, I would …

Tracing Pharmaceuticals In Produce: Their Presence, Effects, And Consumer Perspectives, Savanna N. Crooks Apr 2025

Tracing Pharmaceuticals In Produce: Their Presence, Effects, And Consumer Perspectives, Savanna N. Crooks

Honors Theses

As prescription pharmaceuticals increasingly infiltrate agricultural systems, their unmonitored presence in produce products raises critical concerns about environmental contamination and human health risks. Using a mixed methods approach, combining a literature review and anonymous survey, the presence, fate, and transport of PCs in produce products, potential health effects, and consumer knowledge and perspectives were evaluated. It was found that the presence of PCs spanned across all classes of PCs and were present in locations among all types of environmental media, especially those used for agricultural production. Water contamination was shown as the primary source of transport that led to the …

Fantasy Orientation Of Media Consumption In Childhood And Creativity In Adulthood, Jordyn Martin Apr 2025

Fantasy Orientation Of Media Consumption In Childhood And Creativity In Adulthood, Jordyn Martin

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between the fantasy orientation of media consumption during childhood and creativity in adulthood. Creativity is a valuable skill to nurture in children because of how it influences creative problem-solving and supports well-being throughout their lives. Previous research has shown that fantasy play can be beneficial to the development of creativity, and as media-based activities become increasingly prevalent in modern play, it is important to investigate whether this has similar benefits to typical pretend play. It was hypothesized that higher fantasy orientation of media during childhood would predict higher levels of …

Science Education In The Modern World: A Comparison Of The Classical Christian And Stem Models Of Education, Diane R. Gray

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Abstract

SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE MODERN WORLD: A COMPARISON OF THE CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN AND STEM MODELS OF EDUCATION

Diane R. Gray

Southeastern University

As a classical Christian educator and leader and a former professional scientist, this author has fielded questions and concerns from parents who have wondered if classical Christian education (CCE) will provide strong instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Because parents have expressed concerns about science and math education, and with the growing renewal of classical Christian education, the question addressed in this expository research project is ‘How do the CCE and STEM models of education …

Examining The Effect Of Climate Change Denialism In American Christianity On International Climate Policy, Hope Mcbride Apr 2025

Examining The Effect Of Climate Change Denialism In American Christianity On International Climate Policy, Hope Mcbride

Selected Honors Theses

While 53% of Americans say anthropogenic climate change is happening, only 32% of American evangelical Protestants share that belief (Alper). Key reasons for this gap include the values and political affiliations held by religious Americans. Historically, there have been dissenting opinions on the role of Christianity in global warming, but ultimately data have demonstrated that the opinions of American Christians can influence major global political decisions, such as President Trump’s executive order pulling the United States out of the keystone Paris Agreement.

Exploitation Of User Generated Content For Generative Ai: Making A Case For Data Privacy Rights In Your Social Media Posts, Millicent Wong

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Nearly all user-generated content contains personal data. Yet, Big Tech companies can exploit the user-generated content you posted because under current legal frameworks, the information is already public (no matter how many sordid details you’ve shared in that social media post). In the age of the great generative AI arms race between OpenAI, Google, and Meta, technology companies are collecting mass amounts of user-generated content on their platform for training AI models. This Note argues that current data privacy practices with respect to user-generated content is anti-consumer, because it fails to take today’s technological advancements, business practices, and online norms …

Pajaro River Levee Remedial Design For Climate Resiliency, Anna Krebs, Karina Martin, Olivia Leonardis Apr 2025

Pajaro River Levee Remedial Design For Climate Resiliency, Anna Krebs, Karina Martin, Olivia Leonardis

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

With climate change causing extreme weather events, low-income, underrepresented residents living in Pajaro, California need a more resilient flood mitigation solution because existing infrastructure– the Pajaro River Levee– has recently failed. A hydraulic analysis and overtopping analysis was performed to evaluate potential levee cross sections for a 1.7 mile stretch along the Pajaro River in California. These cross-sections were assessed based on both their material costs and ability to provide sufficient evacuation time.

What’S In It For Her?: Codependence (Saṃyoga) And Independence (Kaivalya) From The Perspective Of Prakṛti, Zoë Slatoff Apr 2025

What’S In It For Her?: Codependence (Saṃyoga) And Independence (Kaivalya) From The Perspective Of Prakṛti, Zoë Slatoff

Yoga Studies Faculty Works

The Sāṃkhyakārikā repeatedly emphasizes that prakṛti (material nature) and her constituents exist solely for the sake of the puruṣa (the self). And yet, since she is blind, she needs puruṣa to see her full glory, and he needs to witness her actions to become liberated (21). Gauḍapāda explains their connection in terms of a pitcher filled with hot or cold liquid, which takes on that property, temporarily, through association. This article looks closely at commentarial passages to explore both the nature of their conjunction and codependence (saṃyoga), which leads to mistaken identification, as well as the method given in the …

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

This ISP is an autoethnographic exploration of Khamlia, a small rural village settled in southeastern Morocco at the edge of the Sahara Desert. Conducted over two weeks, this study engages with themes of indigeneity and identity, Gnawa music and culture, and the complex dynamics of tourism, particularly heritage tourism, and its effects on a town like Khamlia. Particular attention is given to how Gnawa music is performed and utilized as a tool of cultural heritage. The autoethnography also delves into gender roles, family dynamics, and the environmental consequences of tourism on both Khamlia and the surrounding Sahara. Additionally, it reflects …

Strategies Of Animal Rescue Organizations In Agadir, Morocco: Addressing Cultural, Biological, And Government Challenges, Jacey Lynn Ramos

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

Animal rescue organizations in Agadir, Morocco, play a critical role in confronting the intersecting challenges of stray animal overpopulation, zoonotic disease risks, and insufficient government support. This research examines how these organizations respond to cultural perspectives, public health concerns, and state-endorsed culling policies through a combination of field observation, social media analysis, and interviews. Focusing on two major NGOs (Non- Government Organizations) including Sunshine Animal Refuge Agadir (SARA) and Morocco Animal Aid (MAA), the study compares their outreach strategies, operational transparency, and organizational effectiveness. Findings reveal that while SARA offers a structured, humane model centered on TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) and community …

Setting The Scene: Young Tunisian Women, Hip-Hop Liberation Theologies, And The Issue Of Identities, Brandon Hicks

Tunisia and Italy: Politics and Religious Integration in the Mediterranean

This paper explores how hip hop culture functions as a liberating theological and political force for young Tunisian women navigating questions of identity, faith, and belonging. Situated at the intersection of post-revolutionary Tunisia, gender politics, and global hip hop culture, this study argues that hip hop offers a critical space where young women resist traditional religious structures and patriarchal norms while forging new modes of spiritual and political expression. Drawing on original interviews, survey data, and theological frameworks such as liberation theology, Marxist critique, and process thought, the paper presents hip hop as both an aesthetic and ethical practice that …
