How Bats View Their Flowers: Exploring The Use Of Visual Floral Cues By Nectarivorous Neotropical Bats, Lindsey R. Dennison Apr 2025

How Bats View Their Flowers: Exploring The Use Of Visual Floral Cues By Nectarivorous Neotropical Bats, Lindsey R. Dennison

Theses

Neotropical nectar bats in cloud forest ecosystems must navigate and forage in dark, complex landscapes containing an incredible diversity of flowering plants. Despite these challenges, nectar bats are extremely successful at exploiting nectar resources from plants. Much of the sensory ecology behind these bat-plant interactions has been investigated and we know from previous studies that echolocation and olfaction are critical sensory modalities to nectar bats. Echo-acoustically conspicuous floral and vegetative structures as well as sulfur-containing volatile compounds function as signals, allowing bats to sense plants. However, not all plants exhibit conspicuous echo-acoustic and/or olfactory characteristics. Furthermore, many neotropical bat-pollinated plants …

Analysis Of Nitrogen Accumulation And Gene Expression In Hydroponically-Grown Chenopodium Genotypes, Teal Kalt Apr 2025

Analysis Of Nitrogen Accumulation And Gene Expression In Hydroponically-Grown Chenopodium Genotypes, Teal Kalt

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient required by all plants to complete their life cycles. Inefficient N uptake contributes to over fertilization and subsequent environmental and sustainability issues resulting in the need for improved nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Chenopodium quinoa is a resilient pseudocereal crop that is relatively adapted to N-deficient soils. Previous studies have uncovered the unique genetic structure of quinoa and its physiological responses to N availability; however, gaps remain in understanding its molecular mechanisms for NUE. This study investigates four quinoa genotypes (Real-1, 0654, KU-2, and QQ74) hydroponically grown in N-deficient conditions. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis identified …

Development Of Isoscapes For Hong Kong Freshwater Streams As A Basis For Ecological Studies, Hon Tim Yip Apr 2025

Development Of Isoscapes For Hong Kong Freshwater Streams As A Basis For Ecological Studies, Hon Tim Yip

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Applications of isoscapes in terrestrial and marine ecosystems have grown notably as a tool for studying animal movement. However, isoscapes are rarely used in freshwater ecosystem because current iterations of isoscapes commonly model baseline distributions of bulk stable isotope analysis (SIA) data, which may be inadequate for providing the necessary resolution for fine spatial scale stream environments. This issue could potentially be addressed using compound specific stable isotope analysis, a new method that measures the isotopic composition of individual compounds to provide more comprehensive information than bulk SIA. My study focuses on δ13C of essential amino acids (EAA-δ …

Label-Free Evaluation Of Mouse Embryo Quality Using Time-Lapse Bright Field And Optical Coherence Microscopy, Fei Wang, Senyue Hao, Kibeom Park, Ali Ahmady, Chao Zhou

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The selection of high-quality embryos is essential to enhance the implantation rate for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Optical coherence microscopy (OCM) can noninvasively provide three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution imaging of developing embryos. The revealed microstructures can be used for accurate embryo evaluation. Here, we acquire time-lapse 3D OCM images with co-registered bright-field imaging on mouse embryo development from the one-cell stage to the fully hatched blastocyst inside an incubator. Our results demonstrate the capability of OCM to detect structural features of the developing embryos. The second and third embryonic cell cycles are indicated to be associated with blastocyst formation and the …

Using Human Computation And Harmonic Expansions For Characterization And Design Of Grain Boundary Networks, Christopher W. Adair Apr 2025

Using Human Computation And Harmonic Expansions For Characterization And Design Of Grain Boundary Networks, Christopher W. Adair

Theses and Dissertations

Grain Boundary Networks (GBNs) are a high-dimensional feature in polycrystalline microstructural materials that are formed from the crystallographic degrees of freedom. This feature affects multiple material properties such as diffusivity, fracture, elasticity, heat transfer, and others. The link between the crystallography and the material properties is called the structure-property linkage, and allows for simulation and design of materials. While it is possible to use the structure-property linkage to design materials for better performance, the high-dimensional nature of the interconnected grain boundaries preclude the use of many common optimization algorithms for efficiency or local minima considerations. This work shows how the …

Preservation And Integrity Of Laboratory Solutions: Understanding The Impact Of Storage Practices On Chemical Stability And Experimental Accuracy, Azza Al Jahdhami

Honors Theses

Chemical storage methods represent a key matter ignored within labs, educational sites, workplaces, and even households. Many people, including various students and instructors within the chemistry field, are unaware of the proper methods for storing and disposing of common chemicals. This study aims to understand the effects of storage practices on chemical stability and experimental accuracy, dealing with the following questions: What kind of effects result from improper chemical disposal? How can improper storage affect the overall chemical effectiveness? Why is sink disposal of many solutions discouraged, and why is waste container disposal always necessary?

Through a literature review, this …

Psychrotrophic Antarctic Marine Bacteria As Potential Reservoirs For Novel Antimicrobial Genes, Kudzai Hwengwere, Grant G. January, Kerry L. Howell, Lloyd S. Peck, Mathew Upton, Melody S. Clark Apr 2025

Psychrotrophic Antarctic Marine Bacteria As Potential Reservoirs For Novel Antimicrobial Genes, Kudzai Hwengwere, Grant G. January, Kerry L. Howell, Lloyd S. Peck, Mathew Upton, Melody S. Clark

School of Biomedical Sciences

Antarctica is a very cold, isolated continent surrounded by frozen seas, yet these extreme environmental conditions have not restricted life and diversity in the sea. The marine environment is seasonally highly productive and harbours diverse and abundant communities of organisms, with many endemic species occurring nowhere else in the world. Such communities and their associated microbiomes are increasingly recognized as an unexplored source of novel antimicrobial products. Hence, the major aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial potential of bacteria cultured from eight Antarctic marine invertebrate species, while gathering data on Antarctic microbial thermal and salinity tolerances. All …

Cerebellar volumetric changes are intricately linked to aging, with distinct patterns across its transverse zones, the functional subdivisions characterized by unique cytoarchitectural and connectivity profiles. Despite research efforts, the cerebellar aging process in health and neurological disorders remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of age and sex on total cerebellum, transverse zone, and lobule volumes using MRI data from over 45,000 participants compiled from six neuroimaging datasets. We also propose a framework for estimating cerebellum age as an indicator of cerebellar health. Significant age‐dependent volume reductions were observed across transverse zones, with the …

A tumor cell subpopulation of tumor-initiating cells (TIC) or "cancer stem cells" is associated with therapeutic resistance, as well as both local and distant recurrences. Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) activity is elevated in TICs in claudin-low models of human triple-negative breast cancer, which enables enrichment of TICs using a STAT-responsive reporter. Lineage tracing of TICs as they undergo cell state changes could enable a better understanding of the molecular phenotypes of TIC and uncover strategies to selectively target TICs. In this study, we developed a STAT-responsive lineage-tracing system and used it in conjunction with the original reporter …

Unidirectional airflow in the avian lung enables gas exchange during both inhalation and exhalation. The underlying developmental process and how it deviates from that of the bidirectional mammalian lung are poorly understood. Sampling key developmental stages with multiscale 3D imaging and single-cell transcriptomics, we delineate morphogenic, molecular and cellular features that accommodate the unidirectional airflow in the chicken lung. Primary termini of hyper-elongated branches undergo proximal-short and distal-long fusions, forming parabronchi for air conduction. Through the parabronchial smooth muscle, neoform termini extend radially to form gas-exchanging alveoli. Supporting this radial alveologenesis, branch stalks halt their proximalization, defined by SOX9-SOX2 transition, …

Alcohol use is associated with cognitive impairment and dysregulated inflammation. Oral nitrate may benefit cognitive impairment in aging through altering the oral microbiota. Similarly, the beneficial effects of nitrate on alcohol-induced cognitive decline and the roles of the oral microbiota merit investigation. Here we found that nitrate supplementation effectively mitigated cognitive impairment induced by chronic alcohol exposure in mice, reducing both systemic and neuroinflammation. Furthermore, nitrate restored the dysbiosis of the oral microbiota caused by alcohol consumption. Notably, removing the oral microbiota led to a subsequent loss of the beneficial effects of nitrate. Oral microbiota from donor alcohol use disordered …

Navigating Taiwan's Bilingual 2030 Policy: Unveiling Teachers' Glocalization Efforts And Agency, Ching-Ching Lin, Ming-Hsuan Wu

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

As a strategic initiative aimed to enhance English communication skills and bolster the global competitiveness of the general population, Taiwan’s Bilingual 2030 Policy takes place at the intersection of neoliberalism, globalization, and the global spread of the English language. The neoliberal framing of Taiwan’s language education policy has exerted powerful influences on teacher education, teacher hiring practices, curricular design, assessment, and other school practices. While the neoliberalist influences are prevalent among countries in the Global South, responses and resistance may take many forms embedded in specific sociocultural contexts. The reflection discussed here examines the challenges faced by teachers in Taiwan …

Genesis Flood And Tsunami Run-Up: A Study Of Zero Water Depth, Oluwafemi Samuel Dada, John Baumgardner, Mark Horstemeyer

Liberty University Research Week

This research uses the Crank-Nicolson implicit scheme in two-dimensional finite-difference codes to overcome the numerical dispersion associated with tsunami wave propagation as the water depth approaches zero at the shoreland in order to accurately measure the distance of water moving over dry land. Accurately capturing the motion of water from the deep ocean to the coastal area faces numerical dispersion resulting from modeling tsunami behavior at the shoreline, which leads to an inaccurate solution thus causing unrealistic results. This study is developing a finite difference code that uses an implicit method, like the Crank-Nicolson method, to address the numerical issues …

Modeling Ectopic Pregnancy In Murids, Thomas Hall Apr 2025

Modeling Ectopic Pregnancy In Murids, Thomas Hall

Liberty University Research Week

Tubal ectopic pregnancy is a condition where a conceived embryo implants in the f allopian tube leading to the uterus, rather than in the uterus itself (1). As the baby grows, the tension it puts on the wall of the fallopian tube will cause it to tear, resulting in maternal hemorrhaging and death (2). Thus, tubal ectopic pregnancies are universally terminated either by surgical removal of the fallopian tube with the baby, or by chemically inducing miscarriage (3). Tubal ectopic pregnancy rarely occurs in animals, so researchers have no high-fidelity model for testing new interventions (4). Our hypothesis is that …

The Coffee Connection: Anti-Diabetic Potential Of Coffee-Derived Compounds And Their Underlying Cellular And Microbial Mechanisms, Emily Bayliss Apr 2025

The Coffee Connection: Anti-Diabetic Potential Of Coffee-Derived Compounds And Their Underlying Cellular And Microbial Mechanisms, Emily Bayliss

Liberty University Research Week

Type II Diabetes (T2D) is characterized by chronically elevated fasting blood glucose resulting from insulin resistance. Epidemiologically, there is an inverse relationship between habitual coffee consumption and risk of T2D (1-3). While this relationship warrants further study, compounds naturally occurring in coffee may possess anti-diabetic potential. Matairesinol (MA), a coffee-derived polyphenol, has been shown to be effective in mitigating weight gain and fat mass accrual which are associated with T2D (4). Enterolactone (ENL), the metabolite of MA, has demonstrated the ability to act on L6 myotubes increasing basal glucose uptake while hindering triacylglycerol uptake in HEPA1-6 cells as well as …

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

The Impacts And Mitigation Strategies Of Deforestation Globally, Rebecca Martha Nantale, Fredrick Olusegun Akinyosoye, Juan Monteagudo, Maame Yaa Okrah, Nfn Dangpa Wandji Nana

Liberty University Research Week

Deforestation, the permanent removal of forest cover to less than 10% of its original extent, has emerged as a critical global environmental and socio-economic issue. With over 420 million hectares of forest lost since 1990, primarily in tropical rainforests, its consequences are profound and far-reaching. This study examines the primary drivers of deforestation, including agricultural expansion, livestock farming, logging, mining, and urbanization, while analyzing its ecological and social impacts. Ecologically, deforestation accelerates biodiversity loss, disrupts ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and water regulation, and exacerbates climate change. Socially, it undermines food security, heightens vulnerability to natural disasters, and increases …
