The reason behind introducing the definition of convex fuzzy absolute value and does not using the ordinary absolute value is the main definition in this paper will be not correct with ordinary absolute value. After that the main definition of convex fuzzy normed space is recalled with example which shows that the existence of such space. Then other definitions and theorems is recalled that will be used later in the section of main results such as the convex …
Exploring Ddr2’S Role In Caf Extracellular Matrix Production And Tumor Progression, Favour Ayomide Akinjiyan
Exploring Ddr2’S Role In Caf Extracellular Matrix Production And Tumor Progression, Favour Ayomide Akinjiyan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Ovarian cancer has poor survival outcomes particularly for advanced stage, metastatic disease. Metastasis is promoted by interactions of stromal cells, such as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in the tumor microenvironment (TME), with tumor cells. CAFs play a key role in tumor progression by remodeling the TME and extracellular matrix (ECM) to result in a more permissive environment for tumor progression. It has been shown that fibroblasts, in particular myofibroblasts, utilize metabolism to support ECM remodeling. However, the intricate mechanisms by which CAFs support collagen production and tumor progression are poorly understood. In this study, we show that the fibrillar collagen receptor, …

Diversity And Habitat Use Of Bats In Modified Suburban Landscapes, Brittany Morgera
Diversity And Habitat Use Of Bats In Modified Suburban Landscapes, Brittany Morgera
Biology Presentations
Bats occupy critical ecological niches and perform important ecosystem services like controlling insect populations. However, humans have altered bat habitat substantially, resulting in the reduction of bat populations. The goals of this research are to assess bat diversity and habitat use across different levels of suburban habitat modification. To accomplish this, we deployed passive acoustic recorders at twelve locations with varying human impact in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In accordance with The North American Bat Monitoring Program’s standards, acoustic analysis software was used to identify bat species. Manual identification methods from The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative were used to verify these …

Passive Integrated Transponders: An Effective Marking Technique For Individual Identification Of Anaxyrus Fowleri?, Emily Leprell
Honors College Theses
With the rise of fungal disease such as Chytridiomycosis, known as chytrid, causing massive population declines for many species of frogs and toads (order Anura), specific conservation strategies are needed now more than ever. In many cases, being able to mark and identify individuals is a necessary step in developing an effective conservation plan. Individual identification allows researchers to obtain accurate population estimates, which are needed to test the progress and validity of conservation management decisions. However, due to their unique life history, including cutaneous respiration and a dichotomous lifestyle, anurans are among the most difficult wildlife species to …

153 - The Role Of Black Seed Oil (Thymoquinone) On Repetitive Behavior And Neuroinflammation In Spinning Mice, Ashley Biondi
GREAT Day Posters
Repetitive behavior is characterized as repetitive actions with no purpose, which is a common feature in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). What we are trying to see is if environmental interventions can reduce repetitive behaviors in mice. In prior studies in mice, a ketogenic diet (KD) successfully decreased repetitive behaviors. One hypothesis is the reduced spinning is due to the KD being an anti-inflammatory. Neuroinflammation, which refers to inflammation in the central nervous system, may offer a link between diet and ASD, and other disorders. In a convergent approach, this study uses another known anti-inflammatory, Thymoquinone (TQ), to try and reduce …

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) disproportionately affects females, with estrogen loss after menopause contributing to cognitive decline and metabolic dysregulation. The APOE4 genotype is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset AD and may interact with hormone fluctuations to exacerbate neurodegeneration in females. I am starting a project to test the role of estrogen in AD-related behaviors using APOE4 knock-in mice, which carry the high-risk AD allele. This female-focused study uses a mouse model to explore ovarian hormones in the context of AD risk. To begin, I assessed baseline estrous cycles in thirteen 8-month-old female APOE4 knock-in mice using a vaginal lavage …

Inside The Mad Mind: Medical Ethics In 19th Century Fiction, Danielle Dentremont
Inside The Mad Mind: Medical Ethics In 19th Century Fiction, Danielle Dentremont
College Honors Program
The professionalization of medicine in mid-to-late 19th century America and Britain corresponded with heightened critical scrutiny of the ethics of doctor-patient relationships in contemporary fiction. With ethics frameworks of the century focused primarily on good fellowship between practitioners, it was difficult to charge practitioners with bad ethics. Yet, the broader debates of vivisection and women’s rights brought to light power imbalances between men and women that novelists began to suggest were present in medicine as well. Wilkie Collins’ Heart and Science weighs in on the danger of the doctor-scientist encroaching on women’s rights with the suggestion that women will be …
A Natural Short Sleep Mutation Promotes Longevity Through Mitochondrial Respiration In Drosophila, Pritika Pandey
A Natural Short Sleep Mutation Promotes Longevity Through Mitochondrial Respiration In Drosophila, Pritika Pandey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Aging is an irreversible process characterized by progressive physiological decline and an increased risk of metabolic disorders, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegeneration. Disruptions to the circadian clock—whether due to genetic mutations or behavioral factors—accelerate aging and age-related pathologies, highlighting a strong link between circadian regulation and longevity. However, certain individuals harbor a dec2P384R mutation, which enables natural short sleep without the detrimental effects of chronic sleep deprivation. This suggests that these individuals have evolved adaptations that activate pro-health pathways, allowing them to function optimally with reduced sleep. To investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying these changes, we developed a …

Assessing Innovations In Wildlife Monitoring: Estimating Abundance And Inferring Parturition Of Ungulates With Technology, Elicia Cotcher
Assessing Innovations In Wildlife Monitoring: Estimating Abundance And Inferring Parturition Of Ungulates With Technology, Elicia Cotcher
Theses and Dissertations
Enhancements in technology are creating opportunities for novel methods of wildlife monitoring. Traditional methods of wildlife monitoring are often costly or time-consuming, and new technological advancements such as remote cameras and GPS collars are creating opportunities for exploration as these technologies become more accessible and reliable. We sought to assess the efficacy of two novel methods of ungulate monitoring. The first is an abundance estimation method using remote cameras termed Instantaneous Sampling (IS). IS seeks to estimate abundance using time lapsed remote cameras on a population of unmarked individuals. Our goal was to compare IS estimations against the true observed …

Organisms can create sound for many different reasons, and as such, soundscapes (the collection of all sounds in a habitat) can tell us about the biotic activity in an environment based on the quantity and characteristics of sounds being produced. Freshwater soundscapes are generally understudied compared to terrestrial soundscapes. A wide variety of species are active and vocalize in freshwater environments, and studying patterns within these soundscapes can give insight on broader ecosystem health. We explored diel and seasonal patterns in a pond in Western NY by applying the acoustic diversity index (ADI) to underwater recordings from April and July …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common types of dementia, characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Despite its increasing prevalence, there are few treatments and no cure. APOE4 is a variant allele that has been found to contribute to Alzheimer's pathology. We have a knock-in mouse model with the human APOE4 gene that was used to test the cognitive impairment that emerges as a result of the increased APOE4 gene expression. To do this, APOE4 KI mice and wild-type C57BL6/J control mice were tested for activity, motor strength and working memory across development. Although older mice …

Our future goal is to accurately predict gravitational wave signals by solving the Regge-Wheeler equation in the time domain. We first built foundational understanding by solving a simpler case with a simpler method: an oscillating point source on an infinite string, solved by implementing a second-order finite difference approximation to solve the 1D wave equation. We simulated waves propagating to infinity by imposing an internal boundary condition consistent with a Dirac delta source. This was solved and simulated in Mathematica. One important feature of our technique is the use of hyperboloidal slicing and compactification because it enhances accuracy for astrophysical …

Effects Of Hyperglycemia In Cognition And Sex, Erin E. Mcdonald
Senior Honors Theses
An empirical study tested the effects of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on cognitive function in a hyperglycemic mouse model. Strong correlations between mental illnesses, such as major depressive disorder, neuropathologies like Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes suggest comorbid pathology. Considering the prevalence of both T1D and cognitive decline within the general population, the findings were relevant and aimed to identify early signs of cognitive decline in diabetic patients. Behavioral tests and immunohistochemical staining were utilized to determine the cognitive function of the mice, revealing decline or deterioration caused by hyperglycemia. Data gathered from the hyperglycemic or control mice were analyzed based …

Diabetic Retinopathy: A Pathophysiological Discussion, Nathanael C. Nicholls
Senior Honors Theses
Diabetic retinopathy is a severe complication of diabetes that is capable of causing vision loss or blindness. As a result of hyperglycemia, the disease increases oxidative stress and activates biochemical processes such as the Hippo pathway and the complement system to cause significant damage to the retina. Overexpression of BTG1 and microRNA-183 enables activation of biochemical pathways that lead to negative effects on the retinal vascular endothelium including angiogenesis and inflammation. Conventional methods of diagnosis for diabetic retinopathy include fundus examination, nucleoside detection, and optical coherence tomography angiography. Photocoagulation and hormonal intravitreal injection are the most popular current treatments, while …

An Analysis Of John’S Use Of Jewish Language In The Book Of Revelation To Argue For Israel’S Distinct Role In The Millennial Kingdom, Carolyn Nethercutt
Senior Honors Theses
A number of theological topicshave been of great interest to the universal church for generations. One of these is the relationship between Israel and the church, and whether or not there are distinct promises for Israel alone. There are many ways to combat this question. One is Israel's role in the millennial kingdom as laid out in the book of Revelation. The book of Revelation is rich with Jewish imagery and references to Old Testament ways of living. An analysis of the Jewish emphasis in the book of Revelation will be helpful in the effort to determine Israel's distinctive role …

A Comparison And Investigation Of 2d Axisymmetric And 3d Models For The Wave Augmented Varicose Explosions Atomizer, Caleb Miller
Senior Honors Theses
Atomization of non-Newtonian, high-viscosity fluids is a challenging task with many applications. One method of atomizing these types of flows is the Wave Augmented Varicose Explosions (WAVE) atomizer. Using this framework, the study establishes an analysis methodology, investigates the relationship between 2D axisymmetric (2DA) and 3D models, and provides analysis of geometric, non-geometric, and non-dimensional parameter influences on the atomizer characterization in 2DA models. The study found that 2DA models can provide viable predictions of certain 3D model characteristics, established several mathematical models for parameter relationships among 2DA models, and identified certain metrics as inadequate predictors of atomizer characteristics in …

The Employment Of Apoptosis In Embryonic Development, Hannah R. Fioramonti
Senior Honors Theses
Programmed cell death is necessary for the elimination of excess or damaged cells in all stages of life, but this is especially true during embryonic and fetal development of mammals. Beginning before implantation and continuing until birth, both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis are employed within mammalian embryos to ensure the viability of the organism, proper organ morphogenesis, integrity of the genetic material, and the high quality of the germ line. The formation of both transient and permanent ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal structures often involves apoptosis. In this review, a selection of apoptotic events within each germ layer and occurrences of …
