Silent Conversations: The Role Of Internal Dialogue In Emotional Energy, Madeline Kohn
Silent Conversations: The Role Of Internal Dialogue In Emotional Energy, Madeline Kohn
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Sociologist Randall Collins proposes that emotional energy is gained through “interaction rituals” in which two or more people have a shared focus. Drawing on Collins' theory of interaction rituals, this research uses sociological introspection to investigate how reading in solitude and journaling the experience influences emotional energy. The research findings supplement Collins’ theory by demonstrating that emotional energy can be gained in solitude through one’s internal dialogue. Exploring how solitary activities may lead to emotional energy is important because it demonstrates new ways individuals may gain emotional energy by themselves. This research shows that internal dialogues may be an adequate …

Optimization Of Reaction Conditions For Synthesizing Kasa-Targeting Drug Candidates For Tuberculosis Treatment, Megan A. Baxter
Research and Creativity Symposium
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge, with increasing drug resistance pressing for the development of novel treatments. KasA, a key enzyme in mycobacterial fatty acid biosynthesis, is a promising drug target for TB treatment. This research focuses on the design and synthesis of potential KasA inhibitors, specifically optimizing reaction conditions to efficiently produce 1-methyl-6-aminoindazole. This molecule is an intermediate in the synthesis of drugs targeting TB. Characterization of synthesized compounds is performed using NMR, mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography to confirm structure and purity. The first step involved optimizing the solvent and base for the methylation of nitroindazole. We …

Relation Of Persistent Organic Pollutant Exposure With Autism, Gender, Age, And Body Mass Index, Tekle Mitiku
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Approximately one third (37%) of children in the United States are impaired with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) resulting in intellectual disability, and about 1 in 6 children in the United States has one or more developmental disabilities. The economic burden of ASD is estimated to be over $40 billion lost per year. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of polybrominated diphenyl ether derivatives (PBDEs) with ASD, age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). The conceptual framework of the study was based on the physiologically based pharmacokinetic theory that the body burden of PBDEs’ free radicals may …

Tasks in augmented reality (AR), such as 3D interaction and instructional comprehension, are often designed for users with uniform sensory abilities. Such an approach, however, can overlook the more nuanced needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users who might have reduced auditory perception. To better understand these challenges, our study utilized the single-player AR game Angry Birds AR as a probe to explore how 11 DHH participants and 15 hearing participants experienced AR interactions. Our findings highlight that DHH users prefer interaction based on context, effective haptic cues, audio cue substitutes, and clear instructional design. We, therefore, propose …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
The third subfamily of voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels includes four members, Kv3.1, Kv3.2, Kv3.3 and Kv3.4. Fast gating and activation at relatively depolarized membrane potentials allows Kv3 channels to be major drivers of fast action potential repolarization in the nervous system. Consequently, they help determine the fast-spiking phenotype of inhibitory interneurons and regulate fast synaptic transmission at glutamatergic synapses and the neuromuscular junction. Recent studies from our group and a team of collaborators have used cryo-EM to demonstrate the surprising gating role of the Kv3.1 cytoplasmic T1 domain, the structural basis of a developmental epileptic encephalopathy caused by the …

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)
We all long for experiences that make us feel more alive. I strive to make artwork that conveys a sense of wonder and provides happiness as an escape from the mundane. Nature, traveling, and day-trips to theme parks are big influences in my artwork. They have a way of helping me realize the greater picture in life and give me a small escape from reality. Theme parks appeal to me because of the way they make me feel as if I’m in a new world for the day. For my BFA show, I incorporated all of these ideas by designing …

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)
It's been my experience that when transitioning into adulthood, we are conditioned to desaturate ourselves to become more easily digestible for the sake of being taken seriously in corporate settings. My illustrative design work and printmaking in my BFA exhibition focus on the exploration of identity through maturity and how the societal expectations associated with age impact the ways we limit self expression and playfulness as we grow. The exhibition, titled "Lunch Break at BORE INK.," is set in the break room of my fictional office supply company, BORE INK.
I utilize illustrative storytelling, dynamic typography, and the hand-printed production …
Beyond The Didactic: The Morally Edifying Impact Of Pure Aesthetic Experience, Hayley A. Madden
Beyond The Didactic: The Morally Edifying Impact Of Pure Aesthetic Experience, Hayley A. Madden
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
During the late nineteenth century, British artists and writers sought to create a new kind of beauty to combat the growing tedium and materiality of industrialization. This movement became known as Aestheticism, and those who practiced its tradition believed art should be created with the sole intention of eliciting aesthetic pleasure. According to the Aesthetes, art is amoral by nature and any attempt to infuse social commentary into an artwork is fundamentally wrong, adhering to the concept of “Art for Art’s Sake.” This research argues that despite the artists and writers of the Aesthetic Movement claiming that their works exist …

Luminosity Fluctuations Of Objects Within M87, Logan Woody
Luminosity Fluctuations Of Objects Within M87, Logan Woody
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Student Publications
M87 is a large elliptical galaxy located in the Virgo cluster with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) that exhibits jet activity. The combination of the galaxy’s proximity to the Milky Way, its brightness, and the mass of its AGN (6.5*10^9 solar masses) makes it a prime target for AGN research. These jets and other AGN activities can cause fluctuations in the luminosity of the galaxy, which is especially noticeable in X-ray bands. The M87’s jet contains several knots that can fluctuate. The Chandra X-ray telescope, deployed in 1999, can detect X-ray emissions with an energy range of 0.1 to 10 …
