Antioxidant Effects Of Dimethyl Fumarate In Siv-Infected Rhesus Macaques May Indicate Its Use As A Neuroprotective Adjunct In Hiv Treatment, Adam K. Adelsberg, Yoelvis Garcia-Mesa, Halvor Juul, Dennis L. Kolson
Research Day
INTRODUCTION: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an oral prodrug that is FDA approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. DMF is metabolized to monomethyl fumarate and able to cross the blood-brain barrier to illicit its central nervous system (CNS) affects. DMF is an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory that acts at the level of gene transcription through the Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. We assessed the potential neuroprotective effects of DMF in HIV infection by using the rhesus macaque simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection model. We hypothesized that DMF would increase the expression of antioxidant enzymes and subsequently reduce central nervous system …

Topical Antibiotics, Over-The-Counter Products, And Standard Gauze Dressings: A Review Of Postoperative Surgical Site Infection And Wound Healing Management, Emily M. Garelick, Jacob E. King, David Kasper
Research Day
Proper wound healing and prevention of surgical site infections (SSI) are critical in postoperative patient care. According to the CDC, SSIs account for almost twenty percent of all healthcare-associated infections and cause an annual cost of an estimated $3.3 billion annually. Wound healing time, as well as cosmetic results, also play an important role in postoperative wound care. Currently there is not a consensus standard of care for topical treatments to address these issues. This study aims to explore various topical treatments that prevent SSI and encourage effective healing.

Protein Kinase C Delta Peptide Activator Provides Protection During Hypoxia/Reoxygenation And Elicits Significant Anti-Cancer Effects In Vitro, Juliet M. Melnik, Qian Chen, Robert J. Barsotti, Lindon H. Young
Research Day
Introduction
Protein kinase C delta (PKCδ) activation is known to inhibit NOX-2/superoxide (SO) release in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and elicit cardioprotective effects in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Augmenting PKCδ activity also promotes tumor suppressive effects via apoptosis. This study examined the cardioprotective and anticancer effects of PKCδ peptide activator (PKCδ+) in endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes, cardiovascular cells particularly susceptible to oxidative damage due to their high concentration of mitochondria.
Methods
Hypoxia/Reoxygenation: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and rat cardiomyocytes (H9C2 cells), were cultured at 37°C in EBM-2 medium and DMEM, respectively and pretreated with PKCδ+ (Myr+MRAAEDPM) (0.25-5μM) or untreated …

Comparing Crawling Development In Children With Limb Loss/Limb Difference To Typically Developing Children, Larissa Brehm, Analise Oliver, Maya Tulchinsky, Diana Mansouri, Mark Daniel Geil
Symposium of Student Scholars
The CDC removed crawling as a milestone for children developing as of 2022[1], due to insufficient data and definitions. The purpose of this study was to collect data using a pressure mat and quadrupedal gait software on infant crawling patterns in children with limb loss or limb difference (LLD) and typically developing (TD) children in order to understand both how children with LLD crawl, and which parameters detect differences. The data collected was then converted into measurable outcomes such as cadence, velocity, weight distribution, and stance support.
The long-term objective of this study is to understand the quantitative parameters that …

When the development of an organism’s nervous system is interrupted or altered, it can significantly impact that organism’s ability to survive and function properly. In our lab, we use a species of nematode called Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism to characterize the roles of important transcription factors in human neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Utilizing C. elegans makes analyzing this process in a lab very easy for many reasons; they are very small, have a rapid life cycle, invariant cell lineage, transparent bodies, and most importantly, around 80% of their genes have human orthologs. In …

Renal Protection By Upadacitinib In Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Insights From A Male Rat Model", Furqan Hashim Hussein, Najah R. Al Mosawi
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Renal ischemia reperfusion damage is a severe syndrome that can develop after kidney transplants, kidney-targeting surgery, or other clinical situations that restrict blood flow to the kidneys. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the JAK1 inhibitor upadacitinib in lowering RIRI in a rat model. The rats were stratified into 4 groups after a 1 week acclimatization period. The study found that HMGBox and inflammatory substances like TNF-α and IL-6 impact RIRI. Upadacitinib's inhibition of the JAK1/STAT3 pathway minimized RIRI by significantly lowering these molecules. It also significantly reduced NF-κB activation, thereby reducing the inflammatory response and programmed cell death. The …

This study examines the misuse of normality tests in linear regression within ecology and biology, focusing on common misconceptions. A bibliometric review found that over 70% of ecology papers and 90% of biology papers incorrectly applied normality tests to raw data instead of model residuals. To assess the impact of this error, we simulated datasets with normal, interval, and skewed distributions across various sample and effect sizes. We compared statistical power between two approaches: testing the whole dataset for normality (incorrect) versus testing model residuals (correct) to determine whether to use a parametric (t-test) or nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U test) method. …
Assessing The Behavioral Impact Of Pyridostigmine Bromide In Rats, Noah A. Martin
Assessing The Behavioral Impact Of Pyridostigmine Bromide In Rats, Noah A. Martin
Honors Theses
Pyridostigmine bromide (PB) is an organophosphate (OP) nerve agent prophylactic used to protect warfighters against chemical warfare agents. OPs inhibit the neural enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brain. This leads to the buildup of acetylcholine, causing respiratory failure, seizures, and death. PB functions by inhibiting ~30% of peripheral AChE temporarily, protecting the enzymes so that the body is able to restore sufficient cholinergic function post-exposure. PB does not cross the blood-brain barrier, though it may still indirectly affect toxicity in the brain due to repeated AChE inhibition throughout treatment, or by inhibition of non-target ChE’s in the blood. The aim …
