Advancing Efficiency Of Unstructured Mesh Processing With Localized Data Structures, Guoxi Liu May 2025

Advancing Efficiency Of Unstructured Mesh Processing With Localized Data Structures, Guoxi Liu

All Dissertations

Unstructured meshes are widely used to represent complex shapes and data in visualization tasks, such as medical imaging, engineering design, and geometric modeling. However, their unevenly distributed elements make them memory-intensive and time-consuming to process, especially as mesh sizes grow. This research focuses on improving the efficiency of processing large unstructured meshes by reducing memory usage and speeding up computations. This doctoral dissertation introduces three methods to address these challenges. The first approach divides the mesh into smaller partitions and processes it piece-by-piece, reducing memory requirements by up to 10 times. The second approach uses the processor's parallel computing capabilities …

Maximizing Crop Production And Profitability Through Double Cropping Corn And Soybean Systems In South Carolina, Bennett Harrelson May 2025

Maximizing Crop Production And Profitability Through Double Cropping Corn And Soybean Systems In South Carolina, Bennett Harrelson

All Dissertations

Profitability is critical for farm sustainability, efficiency, and longevity. Over the last decade, corn and soybean commodity prices have fluctuated considerably, and more recently, extreme increases in input prices have narrowed profit margins. Non-traditional cropping systems that can boost profit are becoming of interest to farmers in South Carolina, specifically double cropping soybean behind corn. In this scenario, corn is harvested at high moisture contents and followed by ultra-late planted soybean. However, prior research related to the agronomic production practices of double cropping corn and soybean is minimal. To develop best management practices for growers interested in double cropping corn …

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Mask of Sorrow is a twelve-minute song written by me, Alexander Schmidt, that utilizes a variety of techniques that I have learned over the course of my study in graduate school. The piece utilizes leitmotives in a unique and interesting way via the usage of set theory to represent the text in musical form, produce a constant development of material, and encourage a musical narrative to supplement the text. This analysis moves through the whole of the form and documents its usage of timbre, motive, harmonic set, and much more, to showcase the means of which all the techniques …

Natural Killer T Cell-Mediated Control Of Francisella Tularensis-Induced Cytokine Storm Syndrome, Cameron M. Torres May 2025

Natural Killer T Cell-Mediated Control Of Francisella Tularensis-Induced Cytokine Storm Syndrome, Cameron M. Torres

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Inflammation is critical for the effective clearance of viral and bacterial challenges, while simultaneously a mechanism utilized by many highly infectious pathogens to cause disease. The bacterium Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of human tularemia, elicits a cytokine storm, wherein the immune system over-responds to the presence of the bacterium causing a dysregulated release of proinflammatory and regulatory cytokines. Without treatment, tularemia mortality can be as high as 30%, with inhalation of as few as 10 CFUs inducing respiratory tularemia. Natural Killer T (NKT) cells are innate-like T lymphocytes with a diverse array of regulatory functions. Unlike conventional T cells, …

The Affective Poetics Of War In Emi Mahmoud’S Sister’S Entrance, Noha Hanafy May 2025

The Affective Poetics Of War In Emi Mahmoud’S Sister’S Entrance, Noha Hanafy

English Language and Literature

The paper attempts to explore the affective representation of war in Sudanese American poet Emtithal (Emi) Mahmoud’s collection Sister’s Entrance (2018). In her debut collection, Mahmuod offers a poignant exploration of war's emotional and psychological toll through the lens of a woman immigrant from Darfur. The poetry in this collection is not solely about the war in Darfur or Mahmoud’s experience during that time. It delves into the war, but it also highlights the repercussions of the war for her and her family. Such repercussions as displacement, becoming a refugee and eventually living with a hyphenated identity in a world …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Stomoxys flies are widely distributed and economically significant vectors of various livestock pathogens of veterinary importance. However, the role of Stomoxys spp. in pathogen transmission is poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the feeding patterns of these blood feeders collected from specific locations in Kenya to identify various vertebrate hosts they fed on, the livestock hemopathogens they carried, and to elucidate their role in pathogens transmission. Our findings show that field-collected Stomoxys flies carried several pathogens, including Trypanosoma spp., Anaplasma spp., and Theileria spp., which were also detected in the blood of sampled livestock, namely camels and cattle. The findings on …

Venlafaxine Exposure In Pregnancy And Its Association With Pre-Eclampsia Development, Jhanvi Patel May 2025

Venlafaxine Exposure In Pregnancy And Its Association With Pre-Eclampsia Development, Jhanvi Patel

Posters

Venlafaxine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), is widely used to manage depression and anxiety, including in pregnant women. However, its known hypertensive side effects raise concerns about a potential link to pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication characterized by new-onset hypertension and proteinuria. Pregnant women with psychiatric disorders already have an increased risk of hypertensive disorders, and while untreated depression can lead to adverse outcomes such as preterm birth and fetal cortisol elevation, the safety of venlafaxine remains uncertain. Current research lacks wellcontrolled studies assessing its association with hypertensive complications in pregnancy. This systematic review aims to evaluate whether venlafaxine use …

Morphology Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) In Arkansas, Robert Laroche May 2025

Morphology Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) In Arkansas, Robert Laroche

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus dolomieu, is one of the most important game fishes in Arkansas. Three distinct lineages are recognized from different river basins: the Northern, Neosho, and Ouachita Smallmouth Bass. Understanding the biodiversity within this species complex inhabiting different water bodies in Arkansas is important for effective management of the fisheries resource and to guide conservation efforts. But current data on distribution of distinct forms are insufficient to guide management. The primary goals of the study presented here was to quantify morphological characteristics to identify distinct lineages of Smallmouth Bass, and to determine their specific locations within Arkansas streams …

The Prevalence Of Cytauxzoon Felis In Southern United States, Anna Haynes May 2025

The Prevalence Of Cytauxzoon Felis In Southern United States, Anna Haynes

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cytauxzoonosis, caused by transmission from a tick infected with the pathogen Cytauxzoon felis, is considered an emerging tick-borne disease in domestic felines. While not as fatal in other vertebrates such as the reservoir host Lynx rufus (bobcat), in domestic cats, infection is fatal nearly 100% of the time. This study sought to screen ticks pulled from felines for the pathogen across three states in an area identified as a hotspot. Out of 80 ticks screened, 12 tested positive for the pathogen. The positive population of ticks came from 3 neighboring counties in Southern Missouri: Jasper, McDonald, and Newton. McDonald …

The Effect Of Antemortem Tooth Loss On Craniofacial Shape In Apes And Humans, Ashley R. Laster May 2025

The Effect Of Antemortem Tooth Loss On Craniofacial Shape In Apes And Humans, Ashley R. Laster

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) (i.e., defined as tooth loss occurring before death) is common among humans and many primates, and several studies have examined AMTL across various primate groups. Some research indicates that AMTL can influence masticatory function and diet; however, the effects of AMTL on craniofacial shape and biomechanics have not been extensively analyzed. We assessed craniofacial and mandibular shape in relation to AMTL, anticipating that individuals with at least one tooth lost antemortem would display significant differences in cranial and/or mandibular shape compared to those without AMTL. AMTL rates were evaluated in three primate species: wild-caught samples of …

Ecological Interactions Of Large Mammals In Luangwa, Zambia, Jahzara Osborne May 2025

Ecological Interactions Of Large Mammals In Luangwa, Zambia, Jahzara Osborne

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

The connection between mammalian behavior in national parks and human-driven environmental change outside national parks is tenuous. National parks are often considered the last vestiges of natural space, yet they are created and maintained by humans. South Luangwa National Park (SLNP) at the southern end of the East African Rift System (EARS) is a microcosm of this global problem. EARS is a biodiverse region made up of numerous smaller branches. In the Luangwa Valley, this biodiversity has been protected through conservation historically, but dynamic geopolitical forces have affected the relationship between large mammals and humans by extracting humans to create …

The Expression Of Intestinal Tight Junction Proteins Induced By 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3-Glycosides Supplementation To Reduce Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis Lameness In Broilers, Kennedy M. Hicks

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO) is a leading cause of lameness in broiler chickens, impacting animal welfare and commercial poultry production. Supplementation using organic trace minerals, vitamin D, probiotics, and prebiotics has been studied to mitigate BCO lameness incidences in broiler chickens. Our previous study demonstrated that feeding Panbonis®-G-1,25(OH)2D3 from Solanum glaucophyllum, containing 1 µg/kg G-1,25(OH)2D3, to broilers for the first 28 days of their production cycle reduced BCO lameness by approximately 50%. In this study, we investigated the impact of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 supplementation on the expression of tight junction …

Immune Function Modulation By Temperature On Isolated Rainbow Trout Macrophages, Abby Hunter May 2025

Immune Function Modulation By Temperature On Isolated Rainbow Trout Macrophages, Abby Hunter

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Fever is an evolutionary mechanism that enhances immune function, yet the molecular and metabolic responses to fever temperatures in ectothermic species remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how fever temperatures (19° C) influence macrophage function and metabolic activity in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), rather than normal temperatures (16° C). Using a rainbow trout monocytic cell line, RTS11, and primary head kidney-derived macrophages (HKCs), we examined the effects of fever temperatures on nitric oxide (NO) production, gene expression, protein synthesis, and energy metabolism. We found that fever temperatures increased NO production in both cell types, with further …

Eastern Oyster Behavioral And Morphological Response To External Stimuli, Michaela Edwards May 2025

Eastern Oyster Behavioral And Morphological Response To External Stimuli, Michaela Edwards

Master's Theses and Capstones

Oysters are known to provide ecosystem services such as improving water quality, and providing habitats to other organisms, in addition to their role as economically important organisms. Many of these services are tied to the gaping behavior oysters exhibit, opening their shells to filter water and grow. Oysters are known to be impacted by many biological and abiotic factors, including predators, biofouling, and handing stressors. Past work has investigated oyster mortality and growth relating to predation and implementation of different cage and bag cleaning frequencies on farms. However, there is limited research regarding how oyster gaping behavior changes in relation …

Adélie Penguin Vocalizations Reflect Breeding Phenology, Danielle Therese Fradet May 2025

Adélie Penguin Vocalizations Reflect Breeding Phenology, Danielle Therese Fradet

Master's Theses and Capstones

Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) are bellwethers for Antarctic climate change because their breeding phenology is closely linked to sea-ice extent. Researchers need long-term, large-scale phenology data to make informed Antarctic climate and conservation insights. However, traditional breeding phenology data collection is resource intensive, limiting research to small colonies located near research stations. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a low-disturbance, easily scalable method which facilitates large-scale data collection and has been successfully applied at multiple seabird colonies to collect breeding phenology data. In this thesis, I provide a framework to implement a custom BirdNET wind detector to identify wind distorted recordings, …

A Random Forest Regression Approach For Prediction Of Specific Flux For Ultrafiltration Membranes, Isabel Medeiros May 2025

A Random Forest Regression Approach For Prediction Of Specific Flux For Ultrafiltration Membranes, Isabel Medeiros

Master's Theses and Capstones

Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane operation is strongly affected by fouling, where dissolved and suspended water quality constituents interact with each other and the membrane surface, leading to pore blockage. As a result, a fouled membrane loses filtration efficiency, reducing the volume of treated water produced and increasing operation and maintenance costs associated with membrane cleaning. At a Dutch full-scale facility in North Holland, fouling is indicated by both an increase in the amount of pressure required across the membrane, known as transmembrane pressure (TMP), and a decrease in permeability, represented by specific flux (SF). The facility performs hydraulic backwashing - both …

Good Vibrations: Low-Frequency Anthropogenic Sound And Blue Mussel Recruitment, Kyrie Elise Newby May 2025

Good Vibrations: Low-Frequency Anthropogenic Sound And Blue Mussel Recruitment, Kyrie Elise Newby

Master's Theses and Capstones

Anthropogenic noise pollution is increasing in the world’s oceans, particularly along urbanized coastlines and global shipping routes. Many human activities, such as vessel traffic, pile driving, drilling, and other construction projects, produce loud low-frequency noise (Duarte et al. 2021). Marine invertebrates, including the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, sense sound through particle motion and may use acoustic signals as informational cues. While excessive noise has been shown to have negative physiological effects on adult and larval shellfish, Mytilidae larvae have also demonstrated a positive settlement response to some types of low-frequency anthropogenic noise (Solé et al. 2023). During the summer of …

Regenerative Recreation: An Examination Of Recreational Trail Users' Environmental Attitudes And Willingness To Help Restore Ecological Systems, Ryan Peck

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Recreation on public lands has never been higher. Agency budgets dedicated to the ecological health of recreation areas have not kept pace with recreation growth. Recreation managers have been calling for a paradigm shift in recreation management. Using a social-ecological systems (SES) approach, I ask, can non-consumptive recreationists (i.e., hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and equestrians) improve ecological health asynchronously while taking part in their recreation endeavors? I call these asynchronous ecologically beneficial actions regenerative recreation.

This project examines non-consumptive recreation users' environmental attitudes as initially suggested by Dunlap and Heffernan (1975), and their willingness to take part in ecologically regenerative …

Improved Snow Distribution Estimates Using A Rapid-Response Lidar And Photogrammetry System, Naheem Idowu Adebisi

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Snow plays a critical role in global hydrology, climate systems, and human activities, particularly in mountainous regions where it is a primary source of freshwater, influences the energy balance, and impacts mobility and commerce. Despite its importance, accurately mapping and predicting snow distribution remains a major challenge due to the complex spatial and temporal variability of snowpack and the lack of an ideal observation system. This dissertation aims to advance our monitoring capability, understanding, and prediction capacity of snow distribution using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and photogrammetry techniques.

In chapter 2, I discussed the high-resolution LiDAR-derived datasets of multiple …

A New Approach: Supporting Traditional Jazz Pedagogy Through Neuroscience, Christopher John Navarrete May 2025

A New Approach: Supporting Traditional Jazz Pedagogy Through Neuroscience, Christopher John Navarrete

Dissertations

Jazz musicians face a considerable learning curve in their performance endeavors. Numerous factors must be taken into account, including performance anxiety, memorization, active listening, ear training, mastery of musical techniques, and improvisation. Through the effective preparation of these skills, musicians tend to achieve success; however, this success fundamentally relies on the practice habits of the jazz musician.

A common approach in jazz pedagogy emphasizes the development of musical techniques such as scales and chords, modulating across various harmonic progressions. I will define this as a “traditional approach” used in jazz pedagogy. This method has been widely embraced by jazz musicians …

Examining The Effects Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation On Gut Immune Responses, Aspen Elizabeth King May 2025

Examining The Effects Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation On Gut Immune Responses, Aspen Elizabeth King

Dissertations

Previous studies conducted in our laboratory suggest that activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation with the prototypical ligand 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) initially suppresses both fecal and serum antigen-specific IgA responses, but fecal antigen-specific IgA levels recover from suppression while serum IgA levels do not. The purpose of the research detailed in this dissertation was to explore two potential mechanisms allowing for the more rapid recovery of antigen-specific IgA in the feces relative to the serum: (1) an increase in myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) that enhance IgA antibody responses in intestinal tissues, and (2) an increase in the migration of …

A Love Letter To Puerto Rico: Reggaetón As A Platform For Anti-Colonial Protest And Bad Bunny's Advocacy For Indigenous Sovereignty, Skye L. Gonzalez May 2025

A Love Letter To Puerto Rico: Reggaetón As A Platform For Anti-Colonial Protest And Bad Bunny's Advocacy For Indigenous Sovereignty, Skye L. Gonzalez

Honors College Theses

This study explores the intersections of colonial history, cultural identity, and musical resistance through a rhetorical analysis of Bad Bunny’s 2025 album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. Grounded in the context of Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship with the United States, I examine how reggaetón — a genre historically rooted in resistance — continues to serve as a platform for political expression and cultural reclamation. As reggaetón moves into the global mainstream, questions arise around the tension between commercial success and cultural authenticity. Focusing on Bad Bunny as both a cultural icon and political figure, this thesis considers how Debí Tirar …

Speed Breeding And Fungal Blight Testing Of The Darling 54 American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata), Virginia G. May May 2025

Speed Breeding And Fungal Blight Testing Of The Darling 54 American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata), Virginia G. May

All Theses And Dissertations

The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was a dominant, foundational forest canopy species in eastern North America until an imported chestnut blight (caused by Cryphonectria parasitica) rendered it functionally extinct across its native range. Biotechnological approaches, like the Darling 54 transgenic line, have potential for future restoration, but need both lab and field evaluations of their breeding and blight tolerance. This thesis adds to the body of knowledge on the Darling 54 American chestnut. This research reports three novel advancements made through indoor breeding and the first systematic field test for blight tolerance of transgenic American chestnuts.

Historically, …

Movement Lawyering For Pretrial Justice In Eastern Tennessee, Kiah Duggins, Allen Shropshire, Avery Fairburn, Tyler Foster May 2025

Movement Lawyering For Pretrial Justice In Eastern Tennessee, Kiah Duggins, Allen Shropshire, Avery Fairburn, Tyler Foster

Vanderbilt Social Justice Reporter

Judges in Tennessee regularly jail legally innocent people simply because those people cannot afford to pay money bail. Many of Tennessee’s citizens do not have access to healthcare, transportation, employment, or housing, which increases their chances of being arrested, being unable to afford money bail, and becoming further destabilized by pretrial detention. This socioeconomic context, combined with judges’ violations of federal law, make it difficult for advocates to protect indigent people’s pretrial liberty solely through legal tactics. Community organizers in Tennessee have, therefore, strategically combined grassroots organizing with legal tactics to advocate for automatic pretrial release. These organizers’ work demonstrates …

“But Where Are Those Good Old-Fashioned Values?”—The Racial Politics Of Animated Satire In Family Guy, Jordanne Greenidge May 2025

“But Where Are Those Good Old-Fashioned Values?”—The Racial Politics Of Animated Satire In Family Guy, Jordanne Greenidge

Master's Theses

Few animated shows have shaped American pop culture quite like Family Guy. Known for its rapid-fire cutaway gags and irreverent humor, the series has remained a television mainstay since its debut in 1999, despite frequent criticism and even two cancellations. Created by Seth MacFarlane and based on his 1995 student film The Life of Larry, Family Guy has built its reputation on pushing the boundaries of taste, especially when it comes to race, gender, and politics. Though often defended as satire, the show’s use of racial humor raises questions about its true impact: Do its portrayals of Black characters challenge …
