Bostock And The Limits Of Textualism: A Doctrinal Structuralist Approach, Martin J. Katz
Bostock And The Limits Of Textualism: A Doctrinal Structuralist Approach, Martin J. Katz
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
In Bostock v. Clayton County, the Court held that Title VII prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This result, the majority claimed, was required by the interpretive theory called textualism. But textualist justices in the dissent vehemently disagreed. This split, and the controversy that has followed it, has had two consequences. First, it added fuel to the ongoing debate about the value of textualism. Second, it opened the door for lower courts to decline to apply Bostock to similar antidiscrimination laws, such as Title IX in education or the Equal Protection Clause (such as the Skrmetti case, …

Representation Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Realistic Fiction For Children And Young Adults Over The Past 20 Years, Jane E. Kelley, Yun-Ju Hsiao, Brenda L. Barrio, Teresa A. Cardon, Madeline G. Joyce
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In our study, we analyzed 147 contemporary realistic fiction children’s and young adult books that feature characters with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We compared these representations with current statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For each book, we examined the character demographics, the main character, the author’s background, and representation prevalence. Our findings revealed a significant increase in the portrayal of characters with ASD over the past decade. There has also been a rise in the number of characters with ASD serving as the main protagonists in stories. We delved into the implications of gender, race, and …

Transgressive Fiction And The Problem Of Negative Affect: A Case Study Of Samuel Delany’S Hogg, Brian Thornton
Transgressive Fiction And The Problem Of Negative Affect: A Case Study Of Samuel Delany’S Hogg, Brian Thornton
Master's Theses
Samuel Delany began drafting Hogg in March of 1969 and worked on it intermittently before completing the novel in October of 1973.1 Yet Hogg remained unpublished until 1995 before finally seeing the light of day “during the ‘transgressive turn’ in American literature” (Mitchell 1). As such, the novel is historically situated along what Jonathan Mitchell calls a “dual temporality,” which “allows the novel to be located as an intervention in two key moments in America’s LGBT+ history: first, the developments in identity politics coming out of the socio-political cultural shifts of the 1960s; and, second, the post-AIDS awareness 1990s”.
Credit Where Credit Is Due: An Examination Of Credit Hour Outcomes Of Teacher Education Vertical Transfer Students, Lori B. Riley
Credit Where Credit Is Due: An Examination Of Credit Hour Outcomes Of Teacher Education Vertical Transfer Students, Lori B. Riley
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines credit hour accumulation among teacher education transfer students at three of the six institutions within the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO). Oklahoma, like many states, is facing a critical teacher shortage. With half of undergraduate students beginning their postsecondary education at two-year colleges, the community college is an important piece of the teacher education pipeline and can assist with increasing the number of diverse PK–12 educators. Using a comparative quantitative research design, the study explores differences in credit hours accumulated at baccalaureate completion across transfer types (education and non-education), associate degree attainment, declared content areas (4x12 …
Integrating Pre-Colonial Indigenous Australian Art Into Global Art History, Allison Bell, James Hutson
Integrating Pre-Colonial Indigenous Australian Art Into Global Art History, Allison Bell, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Art history as a discipline remains dominated historically through Eurocentric frameworks, systematically marginalizing Indigenous artistic traditions, particularly pre-colonial Australian Aboriginal art. Despite evidence of profound antiquity and cultural richness, such art often occupies peripheral spaces in global narratives. This article addresses these limitations through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating precise archaeological dating methods—including radiocarbon analysis of mud wasp nests and uranium-series dating—with detailed art historical inquiry. Case studies focus specifically on landmark findings, such as the Gwion Gwion rock paintings in the Kimberley region (over 16,000 years old) and Australia’s oldest known in-situ kangaroo painting, dated approximately 17,300 years old. Comparative …

Dna Storage Of Images: From Pixels To Molecules, Cihan Ruan
Engineering Ph.D. Theses
DNA storage is rapidly emerging as a transformative solution for long-term, ultra-dense, and energy-efficient archival systems. This dissertation builds upon a deep understanding of image compression principles to design encoding frameworks that are uniquely attuned to the biochemical constraints of DNA storage. By fusing insights from traditional coding with molecular-level design, we develop a series of technically advanced solutions tailored for this emerging medium.
Our first contribution introduces Dynamic DNA-Fountain, a constrained codec that maps H.266 /VVC-compressed bitstreams to quaternary DNA sequences, optimizing for both information density and biochemical synthesis constraints. Building upon this foundation, we shift focus toward robustness—leveraging …

"Feeding The World Without Devouring The Planet:" African Indigenous Cosmologies Informing Christian Environmental Ethics, Elvis Nche Fru
"Feeding The World Without Devouring The Planet:" African Indigenous Cosmologies Informing Christian Environmental Ethics, Elvis Nche Fru
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Christian social ethics is at the crossroads of its most significant challenges, the environmental crisis which embraces almost every aspect of life: religion, politics, economics and the human person. At a time when global food insecurity is on the rise and calling for an urgent increase in food production, so too is our common home being threatened by our very global food system. In this thesis, l present the African Indigenous cosmologies, more precisely the Shona cosmology, as a complex web of life, within which is embedded Indigenous food systems that can reasonably respond to the ever-alarming food insecurity worsened …

Efficacy Of Stem Cell Therapy Versus Standard Drug Therapy In Adults With Heart Failure, Evie Reynolds
Efficacy Of Stem Cell Therapy Versus Standard Drug Therapy In Adults With Heart Failure, Evie Reynolds
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Myocardial infarction (MI) or other damage to the heart tissue may result in ischemia, and because cardiomyocytes have limited regenerative capacity, this often leads to the development of heart failure (HF). Typical symptoms of HF include dyspnea, edema, cough, fatigue, and chest pain, which arises from fluid overload and congestion. Current medical treatments focus on alleviating these symptoms through loop diuretics, which reduce fluid accumulation but do not treat the underlying ischemic damage. Recent studies have shifted focus towards stem cell therapy, which have shown potential to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and regenerate ischemic heart tissue. A comprehensive search of databases …
Feral And Free: The Queering Of Motherhood In Rachel Yoder’S Nightbitch, Cassandra Haskell
Feral And Free: The Queering Of Motherhood In Rachel Yoder’S Nightbitch, Cassandra Haskell
Master's Theses
This thesis explores motherhood from a perspective that seeks to inform and challenge the patriarchal definitions of motherhood in order to simultaneously confront its restrictions and create new meanings from its institutionalized definition. The main text that this thesis analyzes is the 2021 novel Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder, as well as the 2024 film of the same name, critiquing how it successfully queers motherhood by questioning, challenging, and defying the impractical expectations placed upon mothers by society. Some secondary scholars whose works that I utilize to support my argument are authors such as Audre Lorde, Jessica Calarco, Adrienne Rich and …
Large Mammal Herbivores As Gardeners Of Tropical Forest Ecosystems, Kathryn Garner
Large Mammal Herbivores As Gardeners Of Tropical Forest Ecosystems, Kathryn Garner
Student Scholarship
Ecosystems worldwide are experiencing changes in structure and function as populations of fauna decline and experience local extinctions (Torres-Romero et al. 2020). Due primarily to their body size, large mammal herbivores (LMHs) are disproportionately prone to extinction from human activities such as agricultural expansion, deforestation, and anthropogenic climate change (Pringle et al. 2023). Additionally, as the number of domesticated LMHs (i.e. cattle, pigs, etc.) continue to increase in both density and distribution, their wild counterparts are continually displaced, resulting in increased competition for resources and an increased risk of disease transmission between domestic to wild species (Pringle et al. 2023; …

Queer X Trans Memoir: In Sight Of An Embodied History, Rhyan Warmerdam
Queer X Trans Memoir: In Sight Of An Embodied History, Rhyan Warmerdam
English (MA) Theses
Are queer and trans identities innate or constructed? What constitutes a queer or trans identity? What prompts a person to identify with a particular queer or trans identity category? Prominent queer theorist Judith Butler contends that “There is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender; that identity is performatively constituted” (Butler, Gender Trouble 34). However, many scholars have claimed that Butler’s theory is “not compatible with lived experience” (McCann & Monaghan 134). This project utilizes the genre of memoir to gain insight into lived experiences to put this theory to the test. Through a mini historical archive of twelve …

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2025
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory pathogen that can cause breathing problems in babies and young kids, sometimes leading to serious health issues. Insight into pathologic immune responses and cellular dysregulations that contribute to disease severity has largely relied on invasive sampling typically restricted to critically ill and mechanically ventilated children. However, the nasal mucosa is a critical site for viral entry, making it an ideal target for studying viral pathogenesis and allows sample collection noninvasively. Here, we present an approach for simultaneous single-cell profiling and viral typing using salvaged nasal swabs obtained in pediatric clinics. First, we …

Functional Characterization Of The C-Terminal Cholinesterase-Like (Chel) Domain Of The Thyroid Hormone Precursor Protein, Berenice Morales-Rodriguez
Functional Characterization Of The C-Terminal Cholinesterase-Like (Chel) Domain Of The Thyroid Hormone Precursor Protein, Berenice Morales-Rodriguez
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
Vertebrate life is unsustainable without thyroid hormones. The only known precursor for thyroid hormone synthesis is thyroglobulin (Tg), composed of upstream regions I-II-III and a C-terminal cholinesterase-like (ChEL) domain, which bears 47% similarity to acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Mutations in Tg cause congenital hypothyroidism, the most common congenital endocrinopathy affecting 1 in 2,000-4,000 newborns, with a varying degree of phenotypic manifestations. Tg protein, regulated by TSH, is secreted to the lumen of thyroid follicles, where thyroxine (T4) is formed primarily at the N-terminus, and triiodothyronine (T3) is formed primarily in the ChEL domain. Previous in vitro studies indicated …

Unraveling The Antiviral Mechanisms Of Bat Cells: Processing Of Genomic Rnas By Dicer In Bat Cells Limits Sars-Cov-2 Replication, Iyanuoluwani Owolabi
Dissertations
Bats are reservoirs for numerous viruses that cause serious diseases in other animals and humans. Several mechanisms are proposed to contribute to the tolerance of bats to these pathogens. This study investigates the response of bat cells to double-stranded RNA generated by SARS-CoV-2 replication. Here, we found the involvement of Dicer in the processing of viral genomic RNAs during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Examining RNA sequencing of infected cells, small-interfering RNA (siRNA)-like fragments were found derived from viral RNAs. Depletion of Dicer showed a reduction in these RNAs and an increase in viral loads suggesting unlike other mammals, bats may use Dicer …

Joe Rogan And The Manosphere In The Age Of Modern Misogyny, Alexandra Klocker
CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis
Much scholarly research analyzes extreme misogynistic language in “manosphere” forums, due to their connections to radicalization and violence. However, less attention has been given to the prevalence of such content in mainstream media, such as podcasts. The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast, a prominent and influential platform, has been praised for its wide-ranging discussions but critiqued for fostering and amplifying harmful ideologies, including misogyny. Despite its controversy, limited research has explored how pre-existing misogynistic rhetoric in online communities might shape or influence the content of JRE episodes. This study examines how misogynistic language and themes proliferate in JRE episodes through …
