Island Child: Sound, Memory, And The Diasporic Imagination, Rachel J. Oh
Island Child: Sound, Memory, And The Diasporic Imagination, Rachel J. Oh
Theses and Dissertations
Island Child is an immersive audiovisual installation that explores how sound-based memory sustains personal and cultural identity. At its core, the piece reflects on the quiet yet shared emotion among those who have left home—the inevitability of departure, and the complex act of holding both loss and love. For many, leaving is not a choice, but a necessity. Yet the act of leaving leaves a permanent mark, etched in memory, time, and body.
This project creates a contemplative space for those silent truths, using sound and image to express the tension between separation and continuity. Traditional Korean lullabies, my grandmother’s …
One Can Only Dream, Sophia V. Yacca
One Can Only Dream, Sophia V. Yacca
Theses and Dissertations
One Can Only Dream is an interactive installation in which players are invited to navigate a liminal, dream-like game, engage with a branching series of questions, and introspect upon the relationships between unconscious expression, conscious self-perception, and the inherent difficulty of depicting, sharing, and understanding subconscious thought.
Rooted in both my personal experience with a rare neurophysiological condition and in my desire to create, this project examines dreams not only as a medical and cultural phenomenon, but also as a means to form identity, reflect trauma, and inspire creativity. Drawing from modern interactive storytelling and my lived experiences, this work …
Hemispheres Of Faith: Mapping The Global Journey Of An Ivory Rosary Bead At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Mary M. Thompson
Hemispheres Of Faith: Mapping The Global Journey Of An Ivory Rosary Bead At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Mary M. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Hemispheres of Faith reattributes a carved ivory rosary bead in the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Quito School in 18th-century Ecuador. Through examining the trade history of the Manila Galleons, material analysis, and iconographic study, Hemispheres of Faith challenges the bead's European origins and reveals the object as a product of global exchange, devotional practice, and colonial artistic collaboration within the Spanish Empire.
Intersections: Gastro-Politics Aesthetic And Contemporary Chinese Art, Fan Du
Intersections: Gastro-Politics Aesthetic And Contemporary Chinese Art, Fan Du
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how contemporary Chinese artists use food as a medium to explore ritual, trade, politics, and cultural identity. Centering on The Note of Food, an exhibition I curated, it draws on Arjun Appadurai’s concept of gastro-politics and Lu Xun’s nalaizhuyi (“grabbing doctrine”) to analyze how artists strategically appropriate cultural resources amid tensions between East and West, and tradition and modernity. Merging curatorial practice with food and visual anthropology, the project uses exhibition-making as both method and object of inquiry. As a native anthropologist working as both curator and researcher, I propose a model of curatorial anthropology that …
The Economic Drivers Of Preferential Access, Kristie-Marie Sanchez
The Economic Drivers Of Preferential Access, Kristie-Marie Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how economic theory can explain differences in preferential access across products. Preferential access is the difference between the preferential tariff and the most favored nation (MFN) tariff. This research applies the theory from Bagwell and Staiger (1990) and the empirical findings from Bown and Crowley (2013) to tariff, import flow, import demand, and export supply elasticity data, where Chile is the reporting country. The two-way fixed effects linear regression estimates how changes in import growth, the volatility of import growth, and the inverse sum of import demand and export supply elasticities affect preferential access. The estimates indicate …

The film explores how love and loss impact the ways she confronts her immigrant identity, memories, insecurities, and regrets.
As Above So Below, Robin Smith Fedock
As Above So Below, Robin Smith Fedock
Theses and Dissertations
As Above So Below is a short experimental documentary film that reveals an unexpected world of entanglements connecting life, death, and fungi in Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Fungi are nature’s decomposers, turning dead trees into soil so new trees can grow, for example. Mycorrhizal fungi perform acts of collaboration and mutualism, delivering water and nutrients to roots of plants through their underground networks of mycelium. As we struggle to find ways of living in and beyond this time of planetary crisis, rife with loneliness and grief, what can we learn from fungi and their entanglements? How can we move beyond dominant …

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Ryan’s World is a children's toy review YouTube channel with over 36 million followers and features kid YouTuber Ryan Kaji. A qualitative content analysis of the YouTube channel Ryan’s World was conducted to observe the rhetorical strategies the videos employ to sell Ryan’s World products, as well as how those strategies compare to traditional advertising. An analysis of twelve videos resulted in dominant themes of increasing brand familiarity and product performance of Ryan’s World products. These were accomplished through the use of traditional advertising rhetorical strategies such as product placement, special effects, appeals, and more. The study shows that the …
Using Satellite Tracking And Stable Isotopes To Characterize The Movements, Core-Use Areas, And Distribution Of Loggerhead And Green Turtles Nesting In South Florida, Usa: Internesting, Foraging, And Migration, Glenn D. Goodwin
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The movements of animals in response to environmental variation influence the fitness of individuals and drive major ecological processes, while also varying their exposure level to anthropogenic risks. Understanding the movements and spatial distribution of imperiled species is critical for developing effective conservation strategies. This can be difficult for wide ranging and highly migratory species, such as sea turtles. Throughout their adult life stages, the females of most sea turtle species spend the majority of their time in their foraging areas for multiyear intervals between nesting periods. These foraging areas are typically widely dispersed and variable within nesting populations. To …
Role Of The Small Intestinal Microbiota In The Pathogenesis Of Environmental Enteric Dysfunction In Undernourished Children And Mothers, Clara Kao
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Undernutrition in women and its propagation in their children remains a major global health challenge. Worldwide, one in five children under five years of age manifests undernutrition as impaired linear growth, or stunting. Stunting, defined as having a length-for-age z-score (LAZ) <-2, is associated with poor developmental outcomes, including impaired neurodevelopment and immune responses. Furthermore, stunting and its long-term sequelae persist across generations, contributing to an intergenerational cycle of undernutrition. Existing nutritional interventions fail to substantially improve stunting, highlighting the need to (i) better understand other factors contributing to stunting and (ii) focus clinical efforts towards treating maternal undernutrition. Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical inflammatory enteropathy of the small intestine proposed to contribute to stunting. EED is diagnosed histologically by blunted intestinal villi, epithelial barrier disruption and an immunoinflammatory infiltrate in the lamina propria. However, the pathophysiology of EED remains poorly defined. Furthermore, the small intestinal microbiota remains understudied due to difficulties in sampling. Evidence that the small intestinal microbiota contributes to EED pathogenesis comes in part from our collaborative work with colleagues at icddr,b (the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) who oversaw the Bangladesh EED (BEED) study. In this study children, aged 12-18 months residing in an urban slum in the Mirpur district of Dhaka who failed a nutritional intervention for their stunting, underwent esophago-gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to obtain duodenal mucosal biopsies, aspirates of duodenal luminal fluid and plasma samples. A set of 14 bacteria taxa (defined by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) were identified in the duodenal microbiota of >80% of children with EED. Moreover, the absolute abundances of these ‘core taxa’ were positively correlated with duodenal mucosal and systemic inflammation in study participants and negatively correlated with linear growth. Our lab showed that introduction of a consortium of bacteria cultured from these duodenal aspirates, including these core taxa, produced small intestinal inflammation in young adult gnotobiotic, providing …-2,>

Elemental Humanity: A Hybrid Collection Of Creative Work & A Critical Introduction Exploring Relevant Genres & Themes, Haylee G. Morman
Honors Theses
This project is a creative and critical endeavor with two components: a creative portion and a critical introduction. The creative portion is a hybrid collection of poems and short prose spanning across genres and forms, linked by thematic consistencies, united by their emphasis on nature and family. Furthermore, the collection is rooted in my interest in magic realism and ekphrasis, which will be discussed in the critical introduction. The approximately 30 pages of original, creative writing reveals how delving into natural elements for inspiration spurred the creation of poems and stories that grapple with notions of familial connection, time, place, …
Reimagining Heroes: The Evolving Narratives Of Helen And Achilles In Feminist Greek Mythology Retellings, Elena A. Smith
Reimagining Heroes: The Evolving Narratives Of Helen And Achilles In Feminist Greek Mythology Retellings, Elena A. Smith
Honors Scholar Theses
“Reimagining Heroes: The Evolving Narratives of Helen and Achilles in Feminist Greek Mythology Retellings” is an analysis of an array of novels, monographs, and critiques regarding the genre of mythology retellings. Combining feminist ideas with historical examples, this thesis delves into why retellings are so popular in the twenty-first century and why the stories of Greek Antiquity have stayed relevant.
This thesis focuses specifically on Helen of Troy, Achilles, and the events of the Trojan War in The Iliad. Comparing the epic with retellings of its events may reveal why these characters, gods, and heroes have continued to be discussed …

To Protect The Sky From Falling, Charles Lambert
To Protect The Sky From Falling, Charles Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
Using ceramic, found objects, metal and wood, my practice is a meditation and questioning of care, efficiency, repair, structure and place. Architectural elements of support rendered in clay are the initial point of entry to give a soft, lived-in quality to a built environment that is often devoid of the mark of the hand and body. Imprints of the hand are left, and the objects are often deformed in ways to subvert the perceived functionality. The focus on ceramics centers around a play with the binary of soft and hard and the external changes that create its transformation. The work …

In "A Limit that Recedes", I discuss my art practice in terms of accumulation and techniques of reproduction, such as casting, printing, and repetitive actions. I contextualize my work among artists such as H.C. Westermann, Isa Genzken, and Paul Thek. The work featured in this thesis explores ideas of aspiration, longing, and failure, and explores themes of the fraught relationship of the human and nature.
Know Thyself: A History Of Ancient Neuroscience, Alex Delano
Know Thyself: A History Of Ancient Neuroscience, Alex Delano
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Neuroscience is often described as one of the youngest bodies of science, but documented study of the brain begins as early as the Neolithic period. The ancient Mediterranean was a hub for science, mathematics, philosophy, and literature, all disciplines necessary for the study of the brain. Evidence of neurosurgical procedures like trepanation and craniotomy began in the Neolithic period and were practiced and improved upon throughout the ancient Mediterranean. The first detailed studies on brain anatomy were carried out in the 3rd century BCE in Greece which created a necessary structure for future scientists to build on. While many …
Storytelling Or Telling Stories: An Analysis Of Disnarration In Music Videos, Victoria Garrett
Storytelling Or Telling Stories: An Analysis Of Disnarration In Music Videos, Victoria Garrett
Honors Theses
Music videos have grown in popularity in recent years and have begun to augment the stories being told by the lyrics of their songs. This is done by using narrative techniques, such as disnarration, to develop complex narratives that can conflict with the lyrical content. Through analysis of the videos "Willow" (2020 dir. Taylor Swift) by Taylor Swift, "The One That Got Away" (2012 dir. Floria Sigismoni) by Katy Perry, and "One Beer" (2020 dir. Justin Clough) by HARDY, the distinction between the plots of the videos and the lyrics can be brought into focus. This distinction in the stories …
Enhancing Food Safety: Detecting Pathogens In Bison, Vrinda Brahmbhatt
Enhancing Food Safety: Detecting Pathogens In Bison, Vrinda Brahmbhatt
Honors Capstones
Bison herds are being reintroduced across Illinois for prairie conservation efforts and as an important food source, with bison meat gaining popularity as a healthier alternative to beef. However, bison can act as reservoirs of pathogens such as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, posing food safety and public health risks. Conservational and commercial herds are managed differently, which may influence the prevalence of STEC and associated AMR genes. To address concerns about potential AMR transmission from bison to humans via fecal-oral routes, we examined the prevalence of AMR in STEC isolates from both herd types. …
Selection Of Therapeutically Effective T-Cell Receptors From The Diverse Tumor-Bearing Repertoire, Leonie Rosenberger, Naresha Saligrama, Et Al.
Selection Of Therapeutically Effective T-Cell Receptors From The Diverse Tumor-Bearing Repertoire, Leonie Rosenberger, Naresha Saligrama, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: The development of T-cell receptor (TCR)-based T-cell therapies is hampered by the difficulties in identifying therapeutically effective tumor-specific TCRs from the natural repertoire of a patient's cancer-specific T cells.
METHODS: Here, we mimic experimentally near-patient conditions to analyze the T-cell repertoire in euthymic tumor-bearing mice responding to the H-2K
RESULTS: We found that mp68-specific TCRs isolated from either tumor-infiltrating T cells or spleens of mice immunized with mp68-expressing cancer cells are diverse and not inherently therapeutic when introduced into peripheral T cells and used for adoptive therapy of established tumors. While measuring short-term T-cell responses in vitro was unreliable …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinicopathological condition characterised by mucin-producing peritoneal and omental deposits with an estimated incidence of 1--2 cases per million per year. We report a 42-year-old female patient who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 due to a 7-year history of chronic diarrhoea associated with progressive abdominal distension over the past 2 years. Her assessment was significant for ascites. No neoplastic lesions were found on the upper and lower gastrointestinal scopes. A diagnostic ascitic tapping revealed a free flow of gel-like thick, yellowish fluid. A diagnostic laparoscopy showed a perforated appendicular …

Development Of Parapneumonic Effusion In A Patient Using Kratom, Emma Glover, Morgan Kiryakoza, Nader Mina
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Introduction: “Kratom” refers to both Mitragyna speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia, and to its products, derived from the tree’s leaves, which are marked as an herbal supplement. Kratom is an herbal supplement with both opioid and stimulant-like effects. While there are no approved uses for kratom by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it is frequently used by individuals to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings (especially related to opioid use), pain, fatigue, and mental health disorders. Furthermore, because kratom is unregulated, it can contain contaminants, including heavy metals and harmful bacteria. This case details the development of parapneumonic …
