Does Stress Physiology Mediate Disease Resistance In The Arizona Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Mavortium Nebulosum)?, Megan Zerger

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Amphibian biodiversity has greatly diminished in recent years due to panzootic pathogenic fungi Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), the cause of the deadly disease chytridiomycosis (chytrid). The pathogenesis of chytrid is still unclear, as certain species and individuals within a species are differentially affected. Susceptibility and mortality of Bd are influenced by prolonged corticosterone activity. When produced in excess, this glucocorticoid deleteriously affects many of the same physiological processes as Bd infections. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the relationship of corticosterone variation and Bd spore load in wild Arizona tiger salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium nebulosum). …

Perspectives On The Sloven Ian Republic Of Yugoslavia, David E. Kromm May 2025

Perspectives On The Sloven Ian Republic Of Yugoslavia, David E. Kromm

The Geographical Bulletin

I would like to explore with you the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, the northernmost province of Yugoslavia. In developing a perspective on Slovenia, I will emphasize the cultural and economic distinctiveness of the region in order to distinguish this nation from the rest of the Yugoslav state. Yugoslavia is a relatively new country in Europe, being established in 1918 following the World War I disintegration of the extensive Habsburg and Ottoman Empires. At first the young state called itself the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in recognition of the separate identities of its three major ethnic groups. Stressing …

Disclosure Of Positive Serostatus Among People Living With Hiv In Terna, Ghana: Decisions And Outcomes, Ethel O. Sakitey, Ami R. Moore, Foster K. Amey May 2025

Disclosure Of Positive Serostatus Among People Living With Hiv In Terna, Ghana: Decisions And Outcomes, Ethel O. Sakitey, Ami R. Moore, Foster K. Amey

Journal of African Policy Studies

Disclosure of a positive HIV serostatus is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. This study uses a mixed methods approach to examine disclosure and outcome related issues among a randomly selected group of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLH) in Terna, Ghana. Overall, disclosure was relatively high among the PLH. The qualitative data showed that PLH first assessed people in their lives to whom they could potentially disclose and only disclose to those they believed would accept them, provide them support, and/or keep disclosure secret. However, some PLH inaccurately predicted the reactions of people to whom they disclosed their serostatus. Also, an …

Pastoralism, Social Protection And Vision 2030 In Kenya: Possibilities And Prospects, Maurice N. Amutabi May 2025

Pastoralism, Social Protection And Vision 2030 In Kenya: Possibilities And Prospects, Maurice N. Amutabi

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper is based on research which investigated the availability of social protection structures and institutions among pastoralists in northern Kenya. Social protection, which consists of policies and programs designed to reduce poverty and vulnerability by promoting efficient labor markets, diminishing people's exposure to risks, and enhancing their capacity to protect themselves against hazards and interruption/loss of income is something that northern Kenya needs. The paper faults Vision 2030 and suggests mechanisms and ways in which pastoralists can be incorporated in Kenya's development more meaningfully. The argument is that Vision 2030 has not addressed the plight of pastoralists in political, …

Female Embodiment And Corporeality In Sanskrit Prognostication: A Study Of The Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, Tara Sheemar

Journal of International Women's Studies

The connection between traditional Indian knowledge systems of astrology, medicine, and drama has been noted by scholars. Of particular concern for gender analysis is the reading of lakṣaṇas (bodily marks) that developed in astrology. The coded knowledge of astrology—the sharing of fundamental meanings with other Sanskrit knowledge systems—became a significant tool for gendered prognostication, which buttressed normative gender roles for men and women. In this paper, I attempt to unravel the code of lakṣaṇas given in the Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, a text composed between the 7th and 9th centuries CE. The focus will be on the sections of the text …

Sylvia J. Wynter’S Concept Of The Over-Representation Of Man And Its Relevance To Gender And Global Development In The 21st Century, Tina Renier May 2025

Sylvia J. Wynter’S Concept Of The Over-Representation Of Man And Its Relevance To Gender And Global Development In The 21st Century, Tina Renier

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay critically examines Sylvia J. Wynter’s (2003) concept of the “overrepresentation of Man” (p. 263) and its profound implications for gender and global development in the 21st century. I examine Wynter’s critique of “Man” as the universal subject of knowledge and power through a Caribbean-transnational, decolonial, and intersectional feminist lens. My reflection challenges the historical reduction of the human experience to a singular, patriarchal notion and highlights the voices and contributions of previously excluded marginalized voices and women scholar-activists. In the context of global development, the overrepresentation of Man undergirds the continued dominance of Western, patriarchal ideologies that shape …

Computational Design Of Potent Sirna For Braf Oncogene Silencing For Enhancing Cancer Therapy, Muhammad Hermawan Widyananda, Ricadonna Raissa

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The discovery of oncogenic BRAF mutations has prompted the development of inhibitors, yet resistance remains widespread. A more effective strategy involves targeting BRAF mRNA with siRNA to overcome resistance to BRAF inhibitors. This study aims to design potent siRNA for BRAF oncogene silencing using a computational approach. The full coding sequence of BRAF was retrieved from the NCBI database and potential siRNAs were predicted using the Ui-Tei, Reynolds, and Amarzguioui rules. Identified siRNAs were further analyzed using various prediction systems and parameters, including their interaction with the hAgo2 protein. The results identified that seven siRNAs (siRNA 23, siRNA 24, siRNA …

The Resolution Of The Rann Of Kutch Boundary Problem, John B. Ray May 2025

The Resolution Of The Rann Of Kutch Boundary Problem, John B. Ray

The Geographical Bulletin

Political geographers have long been concerned with international disputes resulting from ineffectively established boundaries. Some of these conflicts have led to the severing of diplomatic relations between states but have escaped general public notice. Others, more extreme in nature, have produced newspaper headlines, particularly if they resulted in armed clashes between the competing claimants. In modern terms most international boundaries are finite lines delimited by treaty, located on accompanying large scale maps and demarcated on the ground. Along these boundaries the effective sovereign ty of one state is separated from that of another state. Times are long past, in most …

Electricity, How An Energy Form Implements Geographic Change, Harold E. Murray May 2025

Electricity, How An Energy Form Implements Geographic Change, Harold E. Murray

The Geographical Bulletin

Agriculture is the greatest energy consuming industry of modern society. In this entire nation factories consume only half as much energy as do farms. Thus the farmer constantly searches for a cheaper form of power. Through the years he has utilized the wind, animals, water power, gas motors, and the human back. Since 1935 he has learned to use the almost miracle power of electricity-cheaper-more efficiently applied-more pliable than energy in any previously known form, the known uses total nearly five hundred-the end is nowhere in sight!' The intent here is to show, narratively and statistically, how the increase in …

Persimmon Creek

Persimmon Creek runs through the Susan B. Jacobs Arboretum, an oasis of nature in the center of our dynamic and thriving campus community at the University of South Carolina Upstate. My colleague Wayne Robbins and I were recently tasked with bringing back the student-edited literary journal formerly known as Writer’s Inc. Dr. Marilyn Knight stood at the helm of Writer’s Inc. for nearly twenty years, and when she retired, the journal left with her. We thought it would be an opportune time to pay homage to the legacy of Writer’s Inc. by renaming and reimagining our home department’s literary journal. …

Sustainability Leadership In Schools: A Success Case Method, Sohail M. Sukhera, Christopher R. Gordon, William L. Sterrett

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

Environmental unpredictability has become a crisis for the 21st century. In response, organizations from the local to international level are addressing the issues by creating, supporting, and promoting initiatives. Schools and school leaders play an important role in this work. An example of a multi-scaled initiative is the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) which recognizes local academic institutions, upon state recommendation, that have implemented three pillars of sustainability: (a) reduce environmental impacts and costs; (b) improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and (c) provide effective environmental and sustainability education. This evaluation analyzed ED-GRS …

When viewing one of my artworks, one will usually see a painting, drawing, or digital work. The painting or drawing will be that of a portrait or a subject matter. The subject at times can learn toward realism, other times I like to create more animated styled characters.

While I’ve always had a passion for creating detailed value-filled portraits in realism, my journey began with the excitement of bringing art to life with illustration.Growing up in a small town of Cadiz KY, there was very little excitement. Not only that, but I was a girl of few words, finding it …

Weep No More, My Lady (Oh! Weep No More Today): Love, Violence, Printmaking, And Kentuckian Futurity, Madison Brown, Marshall Brown

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Situated within a regressive political climate, this essay considers the writer’s thesis artwork Weep No More, My Lady as a simultaneous account of Southern gendered violence and a desire for healing. Through personal and historical connections to Kentucky’s material culture, the work navigates binaries of class, race, and gender that have dictated the dominant contemporary conception of the region. Placing the competing forces of care and brutality in dialogue, Weep No More, My Lady translates these theoretical challenges into formal attributes. The work suggests modes of making — stitching, unraveling, tearing — can act against the construction and naturalization of …

Embodied Stories: Painting The Figure, Diana Hoffman May 2025

Embodied Stories: Painting The Figure, Diana Hoffman

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

This thesis explores the enduring significance of figure painting as a means to record both a personal and cultural narrative. Figure painting reflects not only artistic evolution but also shifting societal values, technological advancements, and emotional expression. Through historical analysis and my own artistic practice, this paper traces the development of figurative painting - from ancient cave art to contemporary work - and examines how artists have used the human body to convey themes of identity, memory and connection. With reference images from my personal photo archive, my work reimagines everyday moments among family and friends, transforming them into open-ended …

Expression Of Genes From Pseudomonas 20ei1 For Possible Control Of Fungi And Cyanobacteria, Brianna Glees, W. Scott Grayburn May 2025

Expression Of Genes From Pseudomonas 20ei1 For Possible Control Of Fungi And Cyanobacteria, Brianna Glees, W. Scott Grayburn

Honors Capstones

Some fungi, such as Aspergillus, can cause significant economic losses in food production and produce mycotoxins that are carcinogenic to humans. Similarly, certain cyanobacteria, which are often present in harmful algal blooms, can kill animals and also produce toxins that are harmful to humans. The goal of this study was to determine if living Pseudomonas 20ei1 bacteria and their cell-free extracts inhibit the growth of Aspergillus nidulans and cyanobacteria. Plating experiments were performed to assess growth inhibition. In plating assays, both live P. 20ei1 bacteria and their cell-free extracts showed inhibition of A. nidulans and cyanobacteria. However, the cell-free …

Art is a space where humor and absurdity are welcomed with open arms. It's a way to break down barriers and connect with others—especially when traditional social interactions are challenging. Growing up with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) means I've navigated a world that often feels out of sync with how my brain works. Conversations are challenges, and it’s easy to feel disconnected from the people around me. Humor, however, has always been my in. It's a great way to find common ground and create a shared experience that feels natural even when other forms of connection don’t. Whether through animation …

The Intersection Of Spirituality, Commerce, And Art In The Work Of William Keith, Joan Gallagher May 2025

The Intersection Of Spirituality, Commerce, And Art In The Work Of William Keith, Joan Gallagher

Theses

This thesis examines the nineteenth-century Tonalist artist William Keith, focusing on how he successfully integrated commerce, art, and spirituality to achieve financial success, artistic innovation, and spiritual depth. While scholars often emphasize the symbolism and religiosity in his work, they tend to overlook his financial accomplishments. This study explores Keith's background, religious influences, and artistic development within the cultural, economic, and social context of nineteenth-century America. As a Tonalist, Keith produced popular works for the art market; as a Swedenborgian, his art reflected the spiritual principles of that faith. Unlike his East Coast counterparts, Keith’s California-based landscapes captured the dramatic …

Estradiol Protects Against Pain-Facilitated Fentanyl Use Via Suppression Of Opioid-Evoked Dopamine Activity In Males, Jessica A Higginbotham, Julian G Abt, Rachel H Teich, Joanna J Dearman, Tania Lintz, Jose A Morón

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Pain relief is the most frequently reported motivation for opioid misuse, but it remains unclear how pain alters reward pathway function contributing to maladaptive opioid use and whether these neuroadaptations occur in a sex-specific manner. Here, we show that persistent inflammatory pain leads to augmented fentanyl self-administration in male, not female, rats. Wireless in vivo fiber photometry recordings and chemogenetic manipulations indicate that pain-facilitated fentanyl use is mediated by enhanced ventral tegmental area dopamine (VTA

C. S. Lewis And The Process Of Sanctification: A Literary Analysis Of Till We Have Faces, Samantha Fullmer May 2025

C. S. Lewis And The Process Of Sanctification: A Literary Analysis Of Till We Have Faces, Samantha Fullmer

Student Research

This article analyzes C. S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces as a mythical representation of the Christian process of sanctification. Through the main character, Orual, and her transformation, Lewis portrays the Christian journey from pride to love through submission to divine intervention. This tale reveals how pride and self-deception can prevent humanity from recognizing the truth of the Divine. Orual’s story illustrates that the barriers between humanity and the Divine often come placed there by humanity themselves. By examining the process of transforming from hubris to love through sanctification, and by comparing this narrative to other works by Lewis, such …
