Yabucoa Port Metocean Observations And Prediction System, Miguel Canals, Julio Morell, Patricia Chardon-Maldonado

Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)

CARICOOS developed a numerical modeling and real-time oceanographic monitoring system to support the Under Keel Clearance System at the Yabucoa Buckeye Caribbean Terminal. Operational port facilities are vital for insular communities' social and economic well-being. Harbor Pilots have emphasized the need for timely awareness of oceanographic conditions to safely board and maneuver vessels into complex navigational channels and port entrances. To address this, a dedicated decision-support tool was designed to provide: 1) real-time data from nearby ocean observing assets, and 2) model-predicted wave parameters enhanced through multivariate polynomial regression models. This model incorporates local wave and wind observations and accounts …

How Do Design Students Use Data In Physicalization Courses?, Damla Çay, Mary Karyda, Mihály Minkó, Judit Boros

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Data physicalization provides a hands-on approach to making data tangible, yet how students interpret and integrate data remains underexplored. This study examines three master level courses, analyzing how students incorporated data into their projects. Through critically reflecting on the course process and reviewing three student projects, we illustrate the evolving roles of data. We observed that data served multiple functions, including providing foundational knowledge, inspiring concepts, informing material choices, guiding ideation, and supporting narrative-driven designs, while also presenting challenges in processing and integration for students with limited data handling experience. We discuss the evolving roles of data in design education …

An Intuitive Approach To Enstoriment During Demonstrator Design Process: A Pilot Case Study, Aleksandra Sviridova, Jouke Verlinden

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Demonstrators, versatile concepts that combine engineering, art, and design are commonly used to communicate technology research. Due to the high complexity and abstractness of such research, product development designers face challenges during the design process. One of the key factors is 'enstoriment', the process of turning concepts into stories and then making them visible through tangible artifacts. The authors of this paper have experienced this in their practice. They had to design a demonstrator without any information on how to do it. In order to see how other designers would approach a similar task without any prior guidance, a pilot …

Collaborative Theorizing With Energy Data, Ayşe Özge Ağça, Jacob Buur May 2025

Collaborative Theorizing With Energy Data, Ayşe Özge Ağça, Jacob Buur

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This study explores the intersection of theory, participatory design, experimental research-through-design, and data physicalization to uncover the relationships between young people, their daily objects, and energy data. We introduce ‘Theory Instruments’ to teenagers, graduate students, and young professionals to encourage them to think about their own energy use along with anthropological, physiological, and visual perception theories and phenomenological concepts. These instruments heighten awareness of otherwise invisible energy consumption practices through visual and tangible data representations. Through projects addressing electricity, water usage, and recycling, participants co-created knowledge by developing actionable insights into their habits. We propose the concept of ‘Collaborative Theorizing’ …

Materializing More-Than-Human Data Through Mapping Wools, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Merve Bektaş, Camilo Ayala Garcia

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper explores how data, through design, can take the form of new materialities, by mapping wool and revealing its close relationship with humans, sheep, and the more-than-human world. Globalization is putting local wool realities, along with their broader ecological systems, increasingly at risk. Focusing on local wool, which is connected to the animals and their ecosystem, we explore how invisible data can be uncovered and reinterpreted to foster a deeper understanding of the entanglements of highly vital material and highlight opportunities for alternative narratives. Using participatory methods and design probes as primary methodologies, the research examines how these approaches …

Sensing Beyond Graphs, Artifacts, And Matter: Data Polysensualization As A Framework For Environmental Detection In Art And Design Practices, Brice Ammar-Khodja, Jean-Michaël Celerier

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This article examines the challenge of communicating the often invisible risks of environmental pollution, focusing on metal contamination in urban soils. Using the Champ des Possibles (CDP), a former industrial site in Montreal, as a case study, we critique the limitations of traditional data visualization methods in fostering public engagement with such abstract and intangible phenomena. To address this gap, we introduce two complementary concepts: transduction and data polysensualization. Transduction refers to the process of converting abstract data, such as numerical representations of metal concentrations, into sensory signals: light patterns, soundscapes, tactile vibrations, etc. This process enables to directly perceive …

Experiencing Uncertainty: The Introduction Of Liminality And Latency In Speculative Mapping Of Lake Karla, Ioanna Sotiriou May 2025

Experiencing Uncertainty: The Introduction Of Liminality And Latency In Speculative Mapping Of Lake Karla, Ioanna Sotiriou

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

GeoAI technologies have expanded the analytic power of cartography by processing vast geospatial datasetsto detect patterns, generate multiscale maps, and unify siloed information. Despite their innovation, suchsystems often reinforce static spatial conventions, treating maps as neutral outputs and uncertainty, whetherwithin datasets or landscapes, as an issue to be resolved. This paper calls for a critical reorientation ofGeoAI’s epistemological foundation, proposing that uncertainty be understood not as a limitation but as thefoundation for grounding new protocols of spatial representation. Building on the two key concepts of latencyand liminality, we develop a framework for understanding uncertainty as both an epistemic gap and …

Towards Distributed Creativity: Understanding Generative Ai In The Context Of Design Philosophy And The Material Turn, Ákos Schneider, Dávid Csűrös May 2025

Towards Distributed Creativity: Understanding Generative Ai In The Context Of Design Philosophy And The Material Turn, Ákos Schneider, Dávid Csűrös

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This study examines the transformative role of generative AI (GenAI) in design through the lens of the material turn, which foregrounds materiality’s agency in shaping human practices. In this context, GenAI is not a mere tool but an active participant in co-creation, challenging subject-object distinctions in design philosophy. Drawing on ontological design, postphenomenology, cognitive science, and material engagement theory, we reinterpret creativity as an emergent phenomenon within sociomaterial networks. Our framework reveals design as a relational process, where creativity unfolds through adaptive interactions, shifting the designer’s role from control to orchestration. We conclude by highlighting the subject- and object-decentered interpretation …

Nyc In Crisis: How The Tiny But Mighty Atlantic Oyster Could Fix Nyc’S Aquatic Problems, Ariella Hatch Tuchman

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses how modern policy and an extensive history of unsustainable environmental practices in New York have led to the destruction of the Oyster Reef of New York Harbor and the extreme flooding and pollution in the water system that came from it. The Oyster Reef was seen as a valuable food source going back to the Lenape tribe. Over time, this has served to the detriment of the reef as its resources have been overestimated and depleted. Chapters 1 and 2 use mainly quantitative data to connect the reef's decline to the decline in the quality of seawater …

In what I have called the process of leaving me rootless, I no longer had access to the places, people, identity, or language that established belonging. However, through …

Active Insight: Using Active Learning To Detect Students Who Need Help Asap, Eric Hicks May 2025

Active Insight: Using Active Learning To Detect Students Who Need Help Asap, Eric Hicks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

CS Education has been plagued with high fail and dropout rates for some time. This has put a larger strain on traditional teaching practices and lead to many attempts to assist struggling students. To deal with these problems, many teachers started to incorporate software tools into their curriculum. By using platforms that came with copious examples and built in testing features, students were able to practice and learn on their own time with immediate feedback, although at a lesser quality. Researchers have often used student data to obtain a better understanding of how students will perform in the future with …

Jim Crow Medicine: Race In Jama, 1883-1982, Han Koehle

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Using a historical approach I examined race discourse within the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 1883 and 1982 to better understand how race concepts connect to the production of medical knowledge and ignorance; how they influenced the production of legal and medical policy; how they related to the production and maintenance of health injustice; and how oppressions and injustices are interrelated. I found a clear differentiation between Jim Crow era and post-Jim Crow race discourse. Jim Crow era race discourse was characterized by a nested, bio-nationalist construct of race, an explicit commitment to White supremacy, a sense …

Computational Complexity Of Soundness Verification For Neural Networks, Scott Sirri May 2025

Computational Complexity Of Soundness Verification For Neural Networks, Scott Sirri

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Neural networks are an increasingly ubiquitous tool in systems of varying complexity across a range of domains. While these tools can be used to learn and predict complex functions, their opaque nature limits the scope of their acceptable applications. In particular, a lack of performance guarantees means that they are unsuitable for safety-critical applications such as self-driving cars and scheduling systems. Neural networks trained to solve NP-complete problems, in particular, are unlikely to be able to solve the problem exactly. However, a weaker soundness guarantee may be sufficient for some systems, e.g., that positive instances of the problem may be …

Transfer Learning For Temporal Logic Objectives, Lucas M. Santana Rovira May 2025

Transfer Learning For Temporal Logic Objectives, Lucas M. Santana Rovira

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Reinforcement learning algorithms can enable autonomous systems to learn the control skills needed to accomplish a task specified by a linear temporal logic formula. However, they cannot be transferred to a new task, even when the two are very similar. For each new task, the policy must be redesigned from scratch, which is a common limitation of existing reinforcement learning methods for temporal logic tasks. A proposed solution to this problem leverages the similarity between past and new tasks to reuse already learned control skills to accomplish the new task, with minimal or no retraining.

Rather than learning a single …
