Musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, bone fracture, intervertebral disc degeneration, tendinopathy, and myopathy, are prevalent conditions that profoundly impact quality of life and place substantial economic burdens on healthcare systems. Traditional bulk transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics have played a pivotal role in uncovering disease-associated alterations at the population level. However, these approaches are inherently limited in their ability to resolve cellular heterogeneity or to capture the spatial organization of cells within tissues, thus hindering a comprehensive understanding of the complex cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases. To address these limitations, advanced single-cell and spatial omics techniques …

Cuproptosis is a recently identified form of copper-dependent cell death. Here, we reveal that radiotherapy (RT) induces cuproptosis in cancer cells, independent of apoptosis and ferroptosis, and depletes lipoylated proteins and iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster proteins-both hallmarks of cuproptosis-in patient tumors. Mechanistically, RT elevates mitochondrial copper levels by upregulating copper transporter 1 (CTR1) and depleting mitochondrial glutathione, a copper chelator, thereby triggering cuproptosis. Integrated analyses of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) from radioresistant esophageal cancer cells and single-cell RNA-seq from esophageal tumors of patients unresponsive to RT link radioresistance to the downregulation of BTB and CNC homology 1 (BACH1). This downregulation de-represses the …

The human population of sub-Saharan Africa is projected to triple by 2100, drastically increasing anthropogenic pressure on biodiversity. When rainforest is disturbed by anthropogenic drivers, species respond heterogeneously; these patterns have rarely been quantified for Congo rainforest fauna. Our objective was to understand how community composition changed with human disturbance—with particular interest in the guilds and species that indicate primary rainforest. At a long-term bird banding site on mainland Equatorial Guinea, we captured over 3200 birds across 6 field seasons in selectively logged secondary forest and in largely undisturbed primary forest. Our multivariate ordination indicated a significant split between primary …

Unsettling Home: Traces Of An Unrepaired Settler-Colonial Past In "Redding, California," 1846-1924, Celeste Hegy
University Honors Theses
This thesis critically reads primary documents from the settler-colonial past of "Redding, California," my hometown. In this paper, I sketch out a series of moments of historical trauma which continue to cry out for repair. Through a series of episodes from the mid-nineteenth through the early-twentieth centuries, I examine how original settler thirst for land wrought a contested hegemony in principally genocidal flows of power between the settler-state and its settler inhabitants and the pre-existing local Indigenous nations and peoples. In the first chapter, I argue for an understanding of the dispossession of the northern valley as genocidal. In the …

This study investigated the effects of dietary black soldier fly (BSF) larvae, Hermetia illucens, meal on growth performance, feed utilization, intestinal health, and immune response in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles. The fish (initial weight: 7.28 ± 0.09 g) were reared in a recirculatory aquaculture system (RAS) and fed diets containing different levels of defatted BSF larvae meal: 0% (control diet), 20% (BSF20), and 40% (BSF40). At the end of the feeding trial, the final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly (p < 0.05) improved with increasing BSF meal inclusion levels in the diet. Histological analysis of the intestine revealed that mucosal fold length (MFL), muscularis thickness (MT), and goblet cell density (GCD) were significantly elevated by the BSF meal compared with the control. In addition, intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) and the enterocyte microvilli length were significantly elevated in BSF40-fed fish compared with the control. Gene expression analysis showed that intestinal chitin digestion-related (endochitinase A) and amino acid transporter (Slc6a18) genes were not significantly affected by the BSF meal. However, the expression of peptide transporter Slc15a1a was upregulated in the fish fed BSF40 compared to the control. Moreover, posterior intestine and head kidney cytokine (IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-10) gene expression levels were not significantly affected by the inclusion of the BSF meal. Therefore, these results suggest that the BSF meal up to a 40% inclusion level can be used as an alternative protein source in the diets of Nile tilapia juveniles to promote growth and intestinal health.

Distinguishing tumor maintenance genes from initiation, progression, and passenger genes is critical for developing effective therapies. We employed a functional genomic approach using the Lazy Piggy transposon to identify tumor maintenance genes in vivo, and applied this to SHH medulloblastoma (MB). Combining Lazy Piggy screening in mice and transcriptomic profiling of human MB, we identified the voltage-gated potassium channel KCNB2 as a candidate maintenance driver. KCNB2 governs cell volume of MB-propagating cells, with KCNB2 depletion causing osmotic swelling, decreased plasma membrane tension, and elevated endocytic internalization of EGFR, thereby mitigating proliferation of MB-propagating cells to ultimately impair MB growth. …

Cyclic mechanical stretch has been shown to inhibit myoblast differentiation while promoting proliferation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we report that mechanical stretch inhibits the differentiation of mouse primary myoblasts by promoting the cell cycle program and by inhibiting the expression of the myogenic regulator MyoD. Stretch alters the miRNA expression profile as evidenced by miRNA microarray analysis. We identified miR-200c as one of the highly downregulated mechanosensitive miRNAs (mechanomiRs) whose expression level was increased during differentiation. This suggests that mechanomiRs-200c is a myogenic miRNA. Overexpression of mechanomiR-200c revoked the effect of stretch on myoblast …

How tumor microenvironment shapes lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) precancer evolution remains poorly understood. Spatial immune profiling of 114 human LUAD and LUAD precursors reveals a progressive increase of adaptive response and a relative decrease of innate immune response as LUAD precursors progress. The immune evasion features align the immune response patterns at various stages. TIM-3-high features are enriched in LUAD precancers, which decrease in later stages. Furthermore, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and spatial immune and transcriptomics profiling of LUAD and LUAD precursor specimens from 5 mouse models validate high TIM-3 features in LUAD precancers. In vivo TIM-3 blockade at precancer stage, …

Medical schools must evolve with the changing healthcare landscape and financial pressures. Academic Health Centers have responded to these changes with a novel organizational model known as an integrated service line. Traditional medical school departments often create silos, lack of alignment, and financial burdens. To our knowledge, we were the first medical school to implement an integrated structure combining the tripartite missions of academics, research, and clinical services.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine accepted its charter class of 55 medical students in 2016 with a traditional medical school department model. By 2023, it had 154 …

While sensor-driven systems such as motion detection, home security systems, etc. are capable of preconfigured tasks, such systems offer limited customization. Large language models are capable of performing reasoning tasks based on data provided to them. This disclosure describes a comprehensive semantic sensing system that is configured to understand user intent and to perform reasoning tasks based on different streams of sensor data (e.g., obtained from low-level sensors) to fulfill that intent. Reasoning tasks can be performed using a foundational AI model. Semantic sensors - sensor-systems that utilize a multimodal language model that interprets sensor data - are described that …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Eutectic Mixture Of Local Anesthesia Cream And Vapocoolant Spray In Mitigating The Pain Associated With Ear-Tagging In Pre-Weaned Calves, Yu-Jhe Lo, Thomas Chia-Tang Ho, Jacky Peng-Wen Chan
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This study evaluated the efficacy of a eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream and vapocoolant spray (VS) in preventing pain in calves following ear-tagging. Thirty-four calves were randomly assigned to three groups: no anesthesia control (CON, n=11), EMLA applied 60 minutes prior (EMLA, n=11), and five-second VS application immediately prior (VS, n=12). Pain pressure threshold (PPT) was measured at 18±1 days of age, with the left ear of the CON group serving as the sham group (Sham, n=11), followed by ear-tagging at 21±1 days. Post-tagging assessments included pain-related behaviors, serum cortisol levels, heart rate, and wound scores. The PPT …

The Love With A Thousand Faces: Heroism As Embodied Love In Action, Scott T. Allison
Heroism Science
In this article, I argue that heroism is, at its core, embodied love in action -- a morally charged, physically grounded expression of care enacted through selfless deeds, courage, and commitment to others. Rather than reducing love to sentiment or an abstract ideal, I emphasize its embodied dimensions: love as a lived, relational force that motivates people to act bravely and altruistically, often at great personal cost. Drawing on psychological research in empathy, attachment, and prosocial motivation, I show how love undergirds moral courage by activating deep emotional bonds and transforming them into action-oriented commitments that transcend fear and self-interest. …

How Does Climate Change Affect The Bird Migration Season And Number Of Bird Strikes?, Moe Myint Paing Soe, Justin Yan Yu Koh, Hong Kai Immanuel Quek, Fonzie Rey Raymundo Torres
Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202
While it is wildly accepted that climate change has led to a shift in bird migration seasons and patterns, how does this change affect the occurrence of strikes between birds and aircraft? Analysing bird strike data from the FAA's Wildlife Strike Database and average annual temperature variations in the United States, we seek to find out if climate change has had an impact on bird strikes between 1990 and 2015 using multiple linear regression. Understanding the wider effects of climate change on the daily operation of aircraft would highlight if there were a need to update wildlife hazard management methods, …

This project is about the limitations and failings of current legal systems. Animal welfare and animal rights protection laws are complementary yet antagonistic, and shortcomings exist irrespective of a partial imposition of biocentric ideals. The project's relevance stems from an increase in international animal abuse and a social need for more comprehensive legislative measures to afford canines and felines legal persons (subjects). In contrast to the assessment of current legislative failures, which fail to acknowledge the indeterminacy of meaning, this project uses neutrosophic n-alectics as a novel investigative vehicle to consolidate disparate findings (positive law versus eco-legal actions). This operates …

Ecocentric Environmental Justice: Why We Should Go There And How We Can Get There, Jillian R. Houle

Environmental justice is necessary. It forces us to grapple with the fact that environmental burdens and benefits have been disproportionately divvied up across arbitrary race- and income-based lines, asks “what are you going to do about it?”, and offers solutions and answers to the problems it identifies. Everyone benefits from environmental justice. At the same time, environmental protection is necessary. Not only does environmental protection, by definition, protect the biotic and abiotic components of the natural world, but it further serves to protect humans, who unequivocally rely on the natural environment to sustain their collective life. Everything – living and …

Grounded in ancestral principles such as Ayni, Buen Vivir, In Lak’ech, ch’ixi, and nepantla, this approach models plural, ambiguous, and context-dependent ethical judgments through Multi-Neutrosophic Sets (MNS). A key contribution is the introduction of the Euclidean Multi-Neutrosophic Consensus Measure, which quantifies the degree of alignment among diverse stakeholders' evaluations without erasing epistemic differences. This measure enables the detection of convergence thresholds in intercultural deliberation, offering a rigorous yet flexible tool for decision-making. The method …

Human resource management could leverage global environmental concerns to promote green practices. Furthermore, ecological sustainability is a major concern in modern society. Among other tools, the affective, normative, and continuance dimensions of organizational commitment are central to organizational implementation. This study aims to determine the relationship between environmental sustainability and organizational commitment in rainbow trout production in the Ingenio-Junín district. For data processing, we use the plithogenic soft set theory. On the one hand, plithogenic theory allows for the modeling of multidimensional phenomena with dynamics composed of elements of diverse origin, where each concept, its opposite, and its neutral are …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study, conducted in the Ecuadorian context, introduces an innovative method employing NeutroAlgebra and a 2-tuple neutrosophic linguistic model to evaluate the efficacy of legal and doctrinal foundations for the protection of urban fauna, focusing on dogs and cats. Faced with challenges such as abandonment and deficient enforcement of regulations in urbanized societies, the research addresses the complexity of measuring the true effectiveness of legal frameworks, considering the inherent uncertainties in their application and interpretation. The analysis is based on expert assessments across five fundamental categories. Preliminary findings, derived from aggregated expert opinions, indicate varied levels of perceived effectiveness: citizen …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Protected areas, such as the 6078-hectare Cerro Blanco Protected Forest of Guayaquil, often struggle with ineffi-cient wildlife information management, including previously physical and inefficient methods of fauna control, which can hinder effective conservation. Comprehensive digital resources are needed to improve data accessi-bility for informed decision-making regarding conservation activities. This project addressed this opportunity by developing and evaluating a digital platform specifically designed to facilitate the collection, organization, and dissemination of wildlife-based resources. While the consideration of digital approaches in conservation is rapidly increasing, there are minimal articles focused on successful encompassing digital platforms, and none that assess their real-world effect …
