Selenium Nanoparticles Synthesized By Pulsed Laser Ablation In Liquids For Antimicrobial Applications, Tina Hesabizadeh
Selenium Nanoparticles Synthesized By Pulsed Laser Ablation In Liquids For Antimicrobial Applications, Tina Hesabizadeh
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to synthesize selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) by Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquids (PLAL) and investigate their antibacterial and biological effects, particularly their impact on cell viability and related biological responses. Spherical amorphous Se NPs were produced by irradiating a selenium target using a combination of bottom- and top-ablation protocols. After autoclaving, the amorphous Se NPs were converted into trigonal Se NPs. Se NPs were characterized by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The biological effects of Se NPs were quantitatively assessed through evaluations of cell viability and associated …

Metabolic functioning in nearly all eukaryotes relies on molecular machinery dual-encoded by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) genomes. The two genomes have sustained an extraordinary degree of cooperation across evolutionary time, preserving the capacity for indispensable processes including oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production, which in turn influence many fitness-related traits. How this cooperation is maintained when one member of the pair is debilitated by deleterious mutation is poorly understood, as is the influence of mutation location (mtDNA or nDNA), mating system, or the potentially compensatory effects of mtDNA copy number changes on the process. We asked whether and …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subsequent neurodegeneration is partially driven by chronic inflammation both locally and systemically. Yet, current clinical intervention strategies do not mitigate inflammation sequelae necessitating the development of innovative approaches to reduce inflammation and minimize deleterious effects of TBI. Herein, a subcutaneous formulation based on polymer of alpha-ketoglutarate (paKG) delivering glycolytic inhibitor PFK15 (PFKFB3 inhibitor, a rate limiting step in glycolysis), alpha-ketoglutarate (to fuel Krebs cycle) and peptide antigen from myelin proteolipid protein (PLP139-151) is utilized as the prophylactic immunosuppressive formulation in a mouse model of TBI. In vitro, the paKG(PFK15+PLP) formulation stimulates proliferation of immunosuppressive regulatory …
Constitutional Futurism As Pedagogy, Jeremiah Chin
Constitutional Futurism As Pedagogy, Jeremiah Chin
Seattle University Law Review
Constitutional Law has transformed from a course on history to a discussion of current events. Cases like Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo reveal that the study of constitutional law is not a static, or even linear, discussion of constitutional text and history. Law is a shifting, changing enterprise that reflects social constructions of power, authority, and identity. How do we teach, learn, and understand constitutional law that is so laden with history, riddled with theories of consistency and adherence to precedent, but ultimately subject …

The Influence Of Colonialism On The Development Of Religious Life In Timor Leste, Abdul Kadirsyam Salampessy, Rahadjeng Pulungsari Hadi
International Review of Humanities Studies
Timor-Leste is the youngest country in the world with unique religious dynamics. The Catholic population increased rapidly after independence, while the Muslim population decreased drastically due to political dynamics. The presence of Mari Alkatiri, an Arab-descended Timorese Muslim who became Prime Minister (PM) twice, is a depiction of the presence of Islam in a Catholic-majority country. The long history of colonialism in Timor-Leste has greatly influenced the landscape of religious life there. In its development, the people of Timor-Leste live harmoniously and democratically.

Bacteria-mediated cancer therapy represents a novel and promising strategy for targeted drug delivery to solid tumors. Multiple studies have demonstrated that various Bifidobacterium species can selectively colonize the hypoxic microenvironments characteristic of solid tumors. Leveraging this property, Bifidobacterium has been explored as a delivery vector for a range of anti-cancer approaches such as immunotherapy, nanoformulated chemotherapeutics, and gene therapy. Notably, anti-angiogenic genes such as endostatin and tumstatin have been successfully delivered to colorectal tumors using Bifidobacterium infantis and Bifidobacterium longum, respectively. Additionally, Bifidobacterium bifidum has been employed to transport doxorubicin and paclitaxel nanoparticles to breast and lung tumor sites. …

Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most malignant childhood brain cancer. Group 3 MB (G3 MB) subtype accounts for about 25% of MB and is associated with the worst outcomes. Herein, we report that more than half of G3 MB tumors express melanoma antigens (MAGEs), which are potential prognostic and therapeutic markers. MAGEs are cancer-testis antigens, aberrantly expressed in several adult cancers, and associated with poorer prognosis and therapy resistance; however, their role in pediatric cancers is mostly unknown. This study aimed to determine whether MAGEs are activated and important in pediatric MB. We obtained formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor samples of 34 patients, …

Distributional Records Of Blanding’S Turtles (Emydoidea Blandingii) In Nebraska, Sam Thede, Dan Fogell, Keith Geluso
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Blanding’s Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is a species of concern in North America as many populations have declined across its distribution. Environmental factors associated with alteration of natural ecosystems have played a role in declines leading to many isolated populations. Most populations exist in the Great Lakes region with a number of outlying populations, such as Nebraska. Understanding the current distribution of the species will facilitate regional management strategies to protect this species into the future. In Nebraska, Blanding’s Turtles were known from 23 counties prior to this study. Herein, we report on eight new county records, five (Blaine, …
Cultural Worldview And Rural Consumer Preferences For Genetically Modified Foods, Nathan P. Kemper
Cultural Worldview And Rural Consumer Preferences For Genetically Modified Foods, Nathan P. Kemper
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations
The consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods varies widely based on personal values and social context. This study investigates how cultural worldviews—measured through the Individualism–Communitarianism and Hierarchical–Egalitarianism dimensions—affect willingness to pay (WTP) for food labeling attributes related to GM content. We surveyed 932 U.S. primary grocery shoppers and conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with poultry product options. Using a Mixed Logit model and supplemental cognitive data from Query Theory, we find that rural individualists are more accepting of GM-labeled products. At the same time, urban communitarians show a stronger preference for non-GM labels. These results offer insight into …

The differentiation and suppressive functions of regulatory CD4 T cells (Tregs) are supported by a broad array of metabolic changes, providing potential therapeutic targets for immune modulation. In this study, we focused on the regulatory role of glycolytic enzymes in Tregs and identified phosphoglycerate mutase (PGAM) as being differentially overexpressed in Tregs and associated with a highly suppressive phenotype. Pharmacologic or genetic inhibition of PGAM reduced Treg differentiation and suppressive function while reciprocally inducing markers of a pro-inflammatory, T helper 17 (Th17)-like state. The regulatory role of PGAM was dependent on the contribution of 3-phosphoglycerate (3 PG), the PGAM substrate, …

Post-craniotomy pain is common yet often sub-optimally managed because systemic opioids can obscure postoperative neurologic examinations. The superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) has, therefore, emerged as a targeted regional anesthesia option for occipital craniotomies. The SCPB targets the C2-C4 nerves to anesthetize the occipital scalp region, covering the lesser occipital nerve territory that lies within typical posterior scalp incisions. Clinical evidence shows the block is effective in reducing acute postoperative pain after occipital craniotomy and diminishes opioid requirements. Studies have demonstrated successful and long-lasting analgesia, reductions in 24-h opioid consumption, and a lower incidence of severe pain. Moreover, the technique …

Optimal Water Hammer Protection Strategies For Low-Head Hydraulic Systems: A Case Study Using Bentley Hammer, Ahmed A. Abdel-Naby, Mostafa A. Abdel-Moaty, Eslam R. Lotfy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The analysis of water hammer in low-head hydraulic systems holds significant importance compared to that in high-head systems, particularly given instances where Thorley’s equation may fall short in providing accurate pump inertia values. In situations where manufacturer data are unavailable, proactive measures to mitigate potential hammering incidents become imperative. While Bentley HAMMER software provides robust simulation capabilities, optimal protection strategies for low-head systems remain underexplored. This case study focuses on a scenario involving multistage centrifugal pumps that lift water from the basement floor of a building to its roof via a polypropylene pipeline. The investigation revealed a novel configuration: relocating …

Discourse Of Indian Knowledge System, Pooja Rai, Rajani Kant Pandey
The World Research of Political Science Journal
Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) is a section of the Indian Ministry of Education that promotes indigenous knowledge systems. Knowledge assets generated in India are called the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Mathematics, physics, technology, medicine, astronomy, architecture, philosophy, arts, languages, literature, culture, society, and traditions are included. IKS has traditionally established its own written or verbal texts, methodologies, and standards for knowledge generation, validation, and dissemination. The Indian knowledge system covers all sectors of society, unlike the western one. Indian knowledge system lags western methodology. This deficiency is due to two factors: Indias history as a nation-state and western societys methodology. …

Recovery-Oriented Dog Intervention (Rodi): An Autoethnography On How A Dog Made Us Change Our Perception Of Recovery And Flatten Our Ontologies, Knut Tore Sælør, Rose-Marie Bank
The Qualitative Report
Allegedly named after a dog show judge, our late dog Rodi was never a Recovery-Oriented Dog Intervention (RODI). Through collaborative-duo-autoethnography, we explore how our mundane co-existence with Rodi has influenced our perspectives on health struggles, recovery, ontology, and what really matters when life becomes difficult, and push comes to shove. We have shared texts describing our memories of how Rodi entered and influenced our lives. Through our collaborative writing we have discovered similarities and differences. Drawing inspiration from philosophy, posthumanism, and new materialism, we argue that our four-legged companion not only changed our everyday lives, but also our perspectives on …

Unresolved tissue damage is a common feature of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that facilitates disease progression. Here, we showed that high animal fat diets (HFD), an environmental risk factor associated with IBD pathogenesis, suppress intestinal macrophage production of critical tissue repair responses after damage. This includes reduced IL-23 production, which drives downstream production of IL-22, which is needed for barrier repair. Indicating that dietary lipids interfere with responses to microbial molecules needed to induce barrier protective functions, we found oleic acid could directly suppress macrophage Il23a induction after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment. Deleting the lipid transporter CD36 on macrophages restored the …

During mouse embryonic brain development, the Evf2 ultraconserved enhancer (UCE) lncRNA guides the Dlx5/6UCE to ~129 sites across chr6. However, previous work identified only 4 transcriptionally regulated targets associated with Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guidance, raising questions about the significance of Evf2-regulated Dlx5/6UCE-gene interactions. Here, single-cell transcriptomics reveal far greater alignment between Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guidance and transcriptional regulation than previously reported. Evf2 divides chr6 into short-range ( < 10 Mb distant), activated genes, and long/super-long-range (10-129 Mb distant), repressed genes, identifying seizure regulating genes in the embryonic subventricular zone that predict adult phenotypes. Evf2-regulated Dlx5/6UCE-gene distances and directions (closer to or further from gene targets) can be decoupled from gene target transcriptional effects. Evf2 regulates Evf2-ribonucleoprotein (RNP) binding in a combinatorial manner to key regulatory sites, including chr6 Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guided sites, Evf1/2 RNA-directly bound sites (RBSs), and inter-chromosomal HiC looping interactions. RBSs divide chromosomes into multi-megabase domains enriched for Evf2-regulated RNP recruitment, transcription factor motifs, and HiC looping interactions. Together with Evf2-controlled homeobox motif recognition at Evf2-RNP recruitment sites and transcription factor motif enrichment in RBSs with DNA identity, this work supports direct roles for Evf2 in enhancer-gene guidance and transcriptional regulation, with the potential for both site-specific and chromosomal domain specific RNP recruitment.

Colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) poses a significant challenge in oncology due to its high incidence and poor prognosis in unresectable cases. Current treatments, including surgical resection, systemic chemotherapy, and liver-directed therapies, often fail to effectively target hypoxic tumor regions, which are inherently more resistant to these interventions. This review examines the potential of a novel therapeutic strategy combining irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation and Clostridium novyi-nontoxic (C. novyi-NT) bacterial therapy. IRE is a non-thermal tumor ablation technique that uses high-voltage electric pulses to create permanent nanopores in cell membranes, leading to cell death while preserving surrounding structures, and …

Military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan were exposed to emissions from open-air burn pits, where plastics, metals, and medical waste were incinerated. These exposures have been linked to deployment-related respiratory diseases (DRRD) and may also impact neurological health via the lung-brain axis. To investigate molecular mechanisms, adult male rats were exposed to filtered air, naphthalene (a representative volatile organic compound), or a combination of naphthalene and carbon black (surrogate for particulate matter; CBN) via whole-body inhalation (six hours/day, three consecutive days). Lung, brain, and plasma samples were collected 24 h after the final exposure. Pro-inflammatory biomarkers were assessed using …
