Background
Shedding of Salmonella is not unusual in captive exotic animals; however, few cases link Salmonella to chronic disease or death of exotic felids.
Case Summary
We report a multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Newport, persisting strain REPJJP01, isolated from exotic felids from two separate regional zoos and potentially contributing to the death of a snow leopard (Panthera uncia) and a Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul). REPJJP01 strains of S. Newport are a recurring cause of human enteric disease outbreaks associated with travel to Mexico and beef products.
Conclusion

Lactic acid is the most abundant organic weak acid in the healthy human vagina and plays a pivotal role in maintaining an acidic vaginal environment protective against exogenous bacteria and viruses. However, in dysbiotic or non-optimal vaginal environments, significantly decreased concentrations of lactobacilli result in reduced lactic acid production, increased vaginal pH, and enhanced risk of sexually transmitted infections (including human immunodeficiency virus), and bacterial vaginosis. Various gel-based products are marketed to administer lactic acid vaginally for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis and non-hormonal contraception, and there is interest in developing vaginal ring products for sustained/controlled release of lactic acid. …

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that affect over 50 million people worldwide, including more than 3.5 million in the United States. Seizures arise from a disrupted balance between excitation and inhibition. Although antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) remain the primary treatment to restore the excitation and inhibition balance, approximately 30% of patients experience drug-resistant epilepsy, highlighting the need for additional antiseizure medications. The Caenorhabditis elegans electroshock assay was developed in relative alignment with the rodent maximal electroshock seizure (MES) test, the gold standard for preclinical AED screening, provides a cost-effective platform for prescreening candidate AEDs.
