Measuring The Rise And Fall Of Plasma 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations In Blue-Tongued Skinks (Tiliqua Scincoides) Following Ultraviolet B Exposure And Withdrawal, Ashleigh Godke, Haerin Rhim, M. Graciela Aguilar, Keishla Marrero-Acosta, Mark Mitchell Jan 2026

Measuring The Rise And Fall Of Plasma 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations In Blue-Tongued Skinks (Tiliqua Scincoides) Following Ultraviolet B Exposure And Withdrawal, Ashleigh Godke, Haerin Rhim, M. Graciela Aguilar, Keishla Marrero-Acosta, Mark Mitchell

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

Species-specific husbandry guidelines remain limited for blue-tongued skinks (Tiliqua scincoides), especially in relation to ultraviolet B (UVB) lighting and vitamin D requirements. This study aimed to determine whether UVB exposure is necessary for these skinks and how long 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations persist after UVB withdrawal. Eleven adult skinks who had been fed with wet cat food were exposed to 12 or 2 h of UVB per day for four weeks. Plasma 25-OHD concentrations were very low at the baseline, and significantly increased post-UVB in both groups (p < 0.01), with the 12-hour group increasing from baseline concentrations of 18.5 [12.8–20.5] nmol/L to 820 [730–1251.3] nmol/L and the 2-hour group increasing from baseline concentrations of 22 [15.5–22] nmol/L to 635 [401–892.5] nmol/L. Following the discontinuation of UVB exposure, 25-OHD gradually declined and was not significantly different from baseline concentrations at 7 and 4 months for the 12-hour and 2-hour groups, respectively. Dietary vitamin D3 (2.5 IU/g as dry matter basis), provided through wet cat food alone, appeared insufficient to support sustained plasma 25-OHD concentrations. These findings strongly suggest that blue-tongued skinks rely on UVB exposure to increase their 25-OHD concentrations. Moreover, the shorter 2-hour exposure provided a significant rise in 25-OHD concentrations and remained above baseline for 4 months, suggesting the shorter exposure can benefit these animals, while potentially reducing secondary risks associated with UVB exposure.

From Millionaires To Marsh Island: Origin And Development Of Wetland Conservation Efforts In Louisiana, Roan Guidry Jan 2026

From Millionaires To Marsh Island: Origin And Development Of Wetland Conservation Efforts In Louisiana, Roan Guidry

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

Wetlands are protected, managed, and restored worldwide to provide a range of ecosystem services, including (i) habitat for plants and animals, (ii) carbon storage, (iii) improving downstream water quality, and (iv) reducing flooding by river and coastal waters. When did such conservation begin, and how do early conservation efforts shape recent public policy? This thesis identifies some of the earliest recorded examples of private efforts in Louisiana and analyzes how these early efforts shaped State and Federal Government action in the realm of conservation. The earliest wetland protection efforts in Louisiana began in the 1910s to sustain continental populations of …

Analyzing And Understanding America’S Involvement In The Global War In Terror Through The Oral Histories Of Its Veterans And Other Sources, Bryce Edwards

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

From 2001 to the early 2020s, the United States and its allies have consistently engaged in political, military, counterinsurgency, and nation building operations in nations such as Afghanistan and Iraq. The efforts of this coalition first rallied to combat the threat of global terrorism after September 11th, yet it would then develop in decades-long assignment to rebuild these countries and their institutions with fundamental (and foreign) western values. This thesis intends to examine the conflict by conducting oral histories of its many veterans, to better understand their lived experience. These interviews will be supported by scholarly works from those involved …

Gullah Geechee, Progenitors For African North American Maternal Lineage, Jennifer Caldwell, Imani Sykes, Robbie Beyl, Tomilowo Abijo, Kiara Charles, Fatimah Jackson

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

African American ancestral lineages are marked by resilience, shaped by centuries of forced migrations, the Transatlantic and domestic slave trades, and subsequent movements within the United States. These historical events have influenced both the cultural and genetic diversity of Legacy African Americans. This study examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups among 189 participants—79 Gullah Geechee and 110 African Americans—to explore the Gullah Geechee as potential progenitors of other Legacy African North American lineages. Haplogroup analysis revealed L2 and L3 as the most frequent among both groups, comprising 34.6% and 38.8% in African Americans and 28.0% and 54.7% in Gullah Geechee, respectively. …

Freshwater mussels (Order Unionidae) are important animals that provide valuable ecosystem functions and services. Due to a multitude of factors such as habitat modifications and habitat destruction related to human population growth many mussel populations are declining throughout the United States increasing the need for public awareness. Louisiana is home to 63 mussel species, but most residents are not aware of their presence, importance, or state of imperilment. We addressed this by creating a field guide to the freshwater mussels of Louisiana. Our goals include providing a resource for accurate freshwater mussel field identification, increasing public and scientific awareness of …

Structural Determination And Regulatory Mechanisms Of Rice Lipoxygenase-1, Lillie Ballanco, Nathaniel Gilbert, Adam Offenbacher Jan 2026

Structural Determination And Regulatory Mechanisms Of Rice Lipoxygenase-1, Lillie Ballanco, Nathaniel Gilbert, Adam Offenbacher

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are non-heme iron containing enzymes that catalyze the oxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as linoleic acid (LA). These lipoxygenase enzymes are found in both plants and animals. In humans, LOXs have been linked to inflammatory diseases such as asthma, atheroscelerosis, and allergic rhinitis. Plant LOXs have been primarily linked to the growth, development, and stress response of the plant. This paper focuses on Oryza sativa lipoxygenase-1 (OsLOX1), an enzyme found in rice (Oryza sativa). OsLOX1 has been associated with enhanced drought tolerance in rice and may play a role in regulating growth under water-limited conditions. Understanding …

Analysis Of The Pervasiveness Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) And Their Relationship With The Incidence Of Neurological Health Disorders, Emma Waters

2026 Research Poster Competition

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a contaminant of emerging concern due to their chemical structure that afford a plethora of issues with regards to degradation on environmental and metabolic fronts. PFAS are amphiphilic and contain a carbon-fluorine bond, which complicates their movement through the environment and ensures their longevity in biological systems. Their persistence in biological systems has led them to be marked as “forever chemicals” and have emphasized them as a priority area for research in recent years. Current work on PFAS relationships to human health have pointed to some causes for concern. Much of the research on …

Objective: The distribution of excess white adipose tissue (WAT) in obesity correlates with risk for comorbidities. Thus, understanding depot-specific WAT developmental mechanisms is translationally relevant. SNPs near the gene CEBPA associate with waist to hip ratio, and while C/EBPα is a recognized regulator of adipogenesis, there is no previously known role for C/EBPα in regulating adipose distribution.

Methods: We crossed Cebpa floxed mice to the AdipoQ-Cre transgenic mouse strain, generating mice with adipocyte-specific knockout of Cebpa (Cebpa_ASKO). Mice were phenotyped on a chow diet and after prolonged high-fat diet (HFD) feeding.

Results: Cebpa_ASKO mice almost entirely lack gonadal …

Dim Light At Night Worsens Cardiac Autonomic Dysregulation In Female Diabetic Mice, Abhilash Prabhat, Shrishti Naidu, Isabel G. Stumpf, Tanya S. Seward, Elizabeth A. Schroder, Brian P. Delisle

Physiology Faculty Publications

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. CAN is characterized by impaired cardiovascular autonomic control and is associated with increased mortality, especially among women with type 2 diabetes. Identifying environmental factors that exacerbate the CAN-associated phenotype may reveal modifiable strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Nighttime light exposure is a novel cardiovascular risk factor. Among ∼90,000 individuals, greater nighttime light exposure correlated with increased atrial fibrillation and heart failure risk. Light at night disrupts sympathovagal balance and elevates nocturnal heart rate in humans. Dim light at night similarly disrupts autonomic regulation of heart rate in mice. We …

Physiology Faculty Publications

Introduction: Sleep disruption is an early feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the cellular mechanisms linking amyloid pathology to sleep loss remain unclear.

Methods: Electroencephalography/electromyography (EEG/EMG) recordings, quantitative EEG analysis, and sleep deprivation were performed in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 (APP/PS1) mice at different stages of pathology relative to normal aging. Amyloid burden and microglial density were quantified with whole-brain light-sheet microscopy. CSF1R-mediated microglial depletion explored effects of microglia on sleep loss.

Results: Amyloid plaques caused non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep loss that did not worsen with increased plaque burden. Aging reduced REM sleep and eliminated sleep rebound. Amyloid pathology was associated with …

Pediatric cancer survival now exceeds 85% owing, in part, to advances and the use of combination chemotherapy treatments such as CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone). Despite its efficacy, CHOP may cause off-target effects during critical pediatric development periods such as impairments of skeletal muscle. We evaluated the acute effects of a CHOP administered to C57Bl/6J mice from postnatal day 28 to 48. CHOP slowed body-weight gain and led to a smaller gastrocnemius fiber cross-sectional area by ~25% in both sexes (n ¼ 11 or 12 males; n ¼ 8 or 9 females). RNA sequencing detected 214 differentially expressed genes …

Skeletal Muscle Methylome-Transcriptome Disruptions During The Onset And Progression Of Colorectal Cancer-Induced Cachexia, Ana Regina Cabrera, Ronald G. Jones, Eleanor R. Shrems, Francielly Morena, Yuan Wen, Tyrone A. Washington, Kevin A. Murach, Nicholas P. Greene

Physiology Faculty Publications

Cancer cachexia is a wasting condition, primarily affecting skeletal muscle, impairing patients’ quality of life, prognosis, and survival. The molecular triggers are incompletely defined, but given prior evidence for epigenetic plasticity in muscle, we speculate that dysregulated DNA methylation plays a role in muscle transcriptional alterations mediating cachexia severity. We aimed to describe and integrate the cachexia methylome and transcriptome. We used a time course approach in a mild cachexia model (colon-26, C26) coupled with a severe cachexia genetic model (ApcMin/+) in both biological sexes to assess the methylome across degrees of cachexia pathology. The muscle methylome and …

Cytoprotective Role Of Octacosanol In Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation, Jingrong Tang, Zhi Hong Yang, Wenling Li, Huaitian Liu, Diego Lucero, Denis Sviridov, Olivia White, Julia Kun, Yoh Suke Mukouyama, Alan T. Remaley Jan 2026

Cytoprotective Role Of Octacosanol In Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation, Jingrong Tang, Zhi Hong Yang, Wenling Li, Huaitian Liu, Diego Lucero, Denis Sviridov, Olivia White, Julia Kun, Yoh Suke Mukouyama, Alan T. Remaley

Physiology Faculty Publications

Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are key steps in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Octacosanol (C28H58O, OCT), a very-long-chain saturated aliphatic alcohol (VLCA) with 28 carbons, is the main component of policosanol, a nutraceutical mixture of VLCAs (C20-C34) extracted from plants. Polycosanol in animal models is known to reduce atherosclerosis, but its mechanism of action remains unclear. This study investigates the pathways by which OCT alleviates LPS-induced inflammation in primary human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). After overnight pretreatment with purified OCT, inflammation in HAECs was induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at 100 ng/ml. The effects of OCT on the …

A Zinc Chelate Of Lysine/Glutamic Acid Reduces Alcohol-Induced Ciliary Dysfunction, Emily Do, Daren L. Knoell, Christopher Bauer, Deanna Mosley, Deandra R. Smith, Derrick R. Samuelson, Todd A. Wyatt Jan 2026

A Zinc Chelate Of Lysine/Glutamic Acid Reduces Alcohol-Induced Ciliary Dysfunction, Emily Do, Daren L. Knoell, Christopher Bauer, Deanna Mosley, Deandra R. Smith, Derrick R. Samuelson, Todd A. Wyatt

Journal Articles: Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health

Alcohol misuse is a known risk factor for pneumonia, and up to 50% of individuals who misuse alcohol are zinc deficient. Chronic alcohol misuse can lead to alcohol-induced ciliary dysfunction (AICD), preventing effective mucociliary clearance and protection against lung infection. Because zinc salts fail to alter AICD, we hypothesized a form of zinc (Zinpro Zinc LG) with enhanced cell uptake would protect against AICD. Human and mouse airway epithelial cells were treated with 50 mM ethanol for 1-24 h followed by the ciliostimulatory agents. Cilia beat frequency (CBF) and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) activity were assayed. Cyclic AMP or beta …

When The Wind Is Right, Luke Matthew Kuennen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Rural Ukrainian Life Under, After, and Near Russian Occupation

Ukraine is endowed with several significant economic assets and plays a crucial role in global trade, particularly due to its rich agricultural resources and strategic location in Eastern Europe. Ukraine's agricultural strength largely stems from its geography and the quality of its soil. The country has about 41 million hectares of arable land, which is approximately 70% of its total land area. The soil is primarily chernozem, or black soil, which is highly fertile and rich in organic matter. This makes Ukraine's land among the most productive in the world.

Ghostly Grieving In Theatre’S Now Also The Dramaturgy Of Perception And The Body In Contemporary American Ghost Plays, Jacob Mann Christiansen Jan 2026

Ghostly Grieving In Theatre’S Now Also The Dramaturgy Of Perception And The Body In Contemporary American Ghost Plays, Jacob Mann Christiansen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

“Ghostly Grieving in Theatre’s Now Also” explores how contemporary American plays and playwrights stage the dead as a way of understanding theatre’s unique language for dealing with the shared, complex human experience of grief. Focusing on theatrical ghosts and other “impossible” presences, I articulate how these figures function as dramaturgical devices. I also argue that theatre’s ghosts “set the stage” (as it were) for communicable meaning-making by inviting audiences into the tasks of creation and mourning.

My work draws on performance theory (especially phenomenological accounts of theatrical storytelling), on dramaturgical analysis, and on grief studies. In this dissertation project, I …

Labor Savings From Mechanical Rice Transplanting In Bangladesh, India, Nepal, And The Philippines: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Rodrigo S. David

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Rice production in South and Southeast Asia faces serious challenges, including acute labor shortages and rising wages, which threaten regional food security. Mechanical rice transplanting offers a promising solution; however, evidence on labor savings, especially region-specific data, remains inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify labor savings from mechanical versus manual transplanting across Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and the Philippines.

Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across four major scientific databases (2000–2026) using Boolean search terms for mechanical transplanting and labor outcomes. Of 284 initial records, 52 met eligibility …

A Novel Nephron: 3d Visualization Of Glomerular Filtration In The Kidney, Cassie Young Jan 2026

A Novel Nephron: 3d Visualization Of Glomerular Filtration In The Kidney, Cassie Young

Theses

Renal physiology, particularly the process of glomerular filtration, remains one of the most conceptually challenging topics in medical education due to its microscopic scale, dynamic pressure relationships, and structural complexity. Understanding how plasma passes through the glomerular filtration barrier requires spatial reasoning across multiple levels—from the gross anatomy of the kidney to the ultrastructure of capillaries, podocytes, and the glomerular basement membrane. This thesis addresses these challenges through the development of a scientifically accurate three-dimensional (3D) animation that illustrates glomerular filtration within its anatomical and physiological context. Designed as a visual teaching aid, the animation aims to improve comprehension of …

Dna Landscape Tool: An Interactive Webpage, Kerstyn Gay Jan 2026

Dna Landscape Tool: An Interactive Webpage, Kerstyn Gay

Theses

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule that carries genetic information that makes up every organism. DNA is typically introduced into the biology curriculum starting in high school and depending on an individual's educational path can continue through college. Although taught frequently during school, elements of DNA can be difficult for students to grasp, due to the different visual representations of DNA found in various resources. For instance, when comparing an illustration of a chemically accurate nucleotide base to an abstract visualization of a chromosome learners often aren’t given enough scaffolding to see how one representation relates to the other, which …

Understanding Computer-Mediated Human Experience In Digital-Physical Hybrid Space, Jiangnan Xu Jan 2026

Understanding Computer-Mediated Human Experience In Digital-Physical Hybrid Space, Jiangnan Xu

Theses

With the rapid development of mobile and immersive technologies, the boundary between the digital and real world is increasingly blurred, giving rise to hybrid spaces. Hybrid spaces have permeated daily life and reshaped spatial meaning-making and social interaction. Despite their growing prevalence, empirical understanding of human experiences in hybrid spaces remains limited. If left unexamined, hybrid spaces risk becoming technology-centered rather than human-centered environments that overlook socio-cultural dimensions, potentially leading to harmful consequences for individuals and society. To investigate human experience in hybrid spaces, this thesis comprises five studies and uses gameful systems as research probes. Prior literature identifies collaboration …

Impact And Requirements Of Future Robots In The Urban Realm: Dubai Silicon Oasis Case Study, Abduljalil Abbasi Jan 2026

Impact And Requirements Of Future Robots In The Urban Realm: Dubai Silicon Oasis Case Study, Abduljalil Abbasi

Theses

Robots are moving from factories and warehouses into the streets, sidewalks, and shared public spaces of cities, and Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) is at the forefront of this shift in the Gulf region. Through the Talabat ‘talabot’ autonomous delivery pilot, DSO has demonstrated that sidewalk robots can operate reliably in a hot-climate, mixed-use urban district, but this operational success has outpaced the governance frameworks, spatial design standards, and long-range planning foundations needed to scale deployment safely, inclusively, and sustainably to 2035. This thesis addresses that gap by asking how DSO can design and govern the integration of robots into its …

Impact Of Water Quality And Gear Type On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Growth In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Jacqueline Rosa Jan 2026

Impact Of Water Quality And Gear Type On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Growth In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Jacqueline Rosa

Open Access Master's Theses

Oyster aquaculture is expanding in Rhode Island, yet key farming regions in the lower West Passage of Narragansett Bay (WPNB) lack the in-situ, high-temporal resolution monitoring needed to evaluate emerging stressors and support production. At the same time, the industry is undergoing rapid technological development aimed at improving production while reducing labor and overall costs. In recent years, a low-maintenance, alternative surface gear was introduced in WPNB; however, its impact on oyster performance relative to traditional cultivation methods has not been quantified. This study established a 1.5-year continuous water quality time series in WPNB and paired these observations with …

Exploring Community Engagement Strategies In Shellfish Aquaculture: Insights From Growers In Rhode Island And Massachusetts, Megan Hensel

Open Access Master's Theses

Shellfish aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry in North America in response to the increased demand for sustainable protein. This trend holds true for Southern New England as well, where shellfish cultivation and consumption have long been embedded in the culture. However, there is a growing disconnect between shellfish growers and the communities in which they live, which has led many researchers to explore ways that growers can enhance relationships with their local communities through community engagement. The purpose of this study is to expand upon the existing literature to understand how shellfish growers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts perceive …

The Critical Role Of Transthoracic Echocardiography In The Evaluation Of Acute Renal Infarction, Gurjeet Dosanjh Jan 2026

The Critical Role Of Transthoracic Echocardiography In The Evaluation Of Acute Renal Infarction, Gurjeet Dosanjh

Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound Projects

Acute renal infarction is a rare and frequently misdiagnosed condition that often presents with nonspecific abdominal or left flank pain. Renal infarction is commonly associated with cardioembolic etiologies, making echocardiography evaluation essential. In the case presented, a 60-year-old male had presented with a sudden onset of left flank pain, and a computed tomography (CT) confirmed renal infarction. A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed to assess cardiac structures, function, and potential intracardiac thrombus. Results showed the diagnosis of moderately reduced left ventricular systolic dysfunction with exclusion of a cardioembolic source, timely investigation of anticoagulant therapy, and a reduced risk of irreversible damage. …
