Metabolic Mechanisms Connecting Alzheimer's And Parkinson's Diseases: Potential Avenues For Novel Therapeutic Approaches, Jerry R Colca, Brian N Finck Jan 2022

Metabolic Mechanisms Connecting Alzheimer's And Parkinson's Diseases: Potential Avenues For Novel Therapeutic Approaches, Jerry R Colca, Brian N Finck

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's Diseases (PD) are common neurodegenerative disorders growing in incidence and prevalence and for which there are no disease-modifying treatments. While there are considerable complexities in the presentations of these diseases, the histological pictures of these pathologies, as well as several rare genetic predispositions for each, point to the involvement of maladaptive protein processing and inflammation. Importantly, the common presentations of AD and PD are connected to aging and to dysmetabolism, including common co-diagnosis of metabolic syndrome or diabetes. Examination of anti-diabetic therapies in preclinical models and in some observational clinical studies have suggested effectiveness of the …

Cilia Action In Islets: Lessons From Mouse Models, Jung Hoon Cho, Jing W Hughes Jan 2022

Cilia Action In Islets: Lessons From Mouse Models, Jung Hoon Cho, Jing W Hughes

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Primary cilia as a signaling organelle have garnered recent attention as a regulator of pancreatic islet function. These rod-like sensors exist on all major islet endocrine cell types and transduce a variety of external cues, while dysregulation of cilia function contributes to the development of diabetes. The complex role of islet primary cilia has been examined using genetic deletion targeting various components of cilia. In this review, we summarize experimental models for the study of islet cilia and current understanding of mechanisms of cilia regulation of islet hormone secretion. Consensus from these studies shows that pancreatic cilia perturbation can cause …

Monosynaptic Targets Of Utricular Afferents In The Larval Zebrafish, Yizhen Jia, Martha W Bagnall

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The larval zebrafish acquires a repertoire of vestibular-driven behaviors that aid survival early in development. These behaviors rely mostly on the utricular otolith, which senses inertial (tilt and translational) head movements. We previously characterized the known central brainstem targets of utricular afferents using serial-section electron microscopy of a larval zebrafish brain. Here we describe the rest of the central targets of utricular afferents, focusing on the neurons whose identities are less certain in our dataset. We find that central neurons with commissural projections have a wide range of predicted directional tuning, just as in other vertebrates. In addition, somata of …

The Role Of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In Acute Lung Injury, Davide Scozzi, Fuyi Liao, Alexander S Krupnick, Daniel Kreisel, Andrew E Gelman Jan 2022

The Role Of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In Acute Lung Injury, Davide Scozzi, Fuyi Liao, Alexander S Krupnick, Daniel Kreisel, Andrew E Gelman

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a heterogeneous inflammatory condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. Neutrophils play a key role in the development of different forms of ALI, and the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) is emerging as a common pathogenic mechanism. NETs are essential in controlling pathogens, and their defective release or increased degradation leads to a higher risk of infection. However, NETs also contain several pro-inflammatory and cytotoxic molecules than can exacerbate thromboinflammation and lung tissue injury. To reduce NET-mediated lung damage and inflammation, DNase is frequently used in preclinical models of ALI due to its capability …

The Structural Basis Of Long-Term Potentiation In Hippocampal Synapses, Revealed By Electron Microscopy Imaging Of Lanthanum-Induced Synaptic Vesicle Recycling, John E Heuser Jan 2022

The Structural Basis Of Long-Term Potentiation In Hippocampal Synapses, Revealed By Electron Microscopy Imaging Of Lanthanum-Induced Synaptic Vesicle Recycling, John E Heuser

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Hippocampal neurons in dissociated cell cultures were exposed to the trivalent cation lanthanum for short periods (15-30 min) and prepared for electron microscopy (EM), to evaluate the stimulatory effects of this cation on synaptic ultrastructure. Not only were characteristic ultrastructural changes of exaggerated synaptic vesicle turnover seen within the presynapses of these cultures-including synaptic vesicle depletion and proliferation of vesicle-recycling structures-but the overall architecture of a large proportion of the synapses in the cultures was dramatically altered, due to large postsynaptic "bulges" or herniations into the presynapses. Moreover, in most cases, these postsynaptic herniations or protrusions produced by lanthanum were …

Since first reported in 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is rapidly acquiring mutations, particularly in the spike protein, that can modulate pathogenicity, transmission and antibody evasion leading to successive waves of COVID19 infections despite an unprecedented mass vaccination necessitating continuous adaptation of therapeutics. Small animal models can facilitate understanding host-pathogen interactions, target selection for therapeutic drugs, and vaccine development, but availability and cost of studies in BSL3 facilities hinder progress. To generate a BSL2-compatible

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Dietary patterns spanning millennia could inform contemporary public health nutrition. Children are largely absent from evidence describing diets throughout human evolution, despite prevalent malnutrition today signaling a potential genome-environment divergence. This systematic review aimed to identify dietary patterns of children ages 6 months to 10 years consumed before the widespread adoption of agriculture. Metrics of mention frequency (counts of food types reported) and food groups (globally standardized categories) were applied to: compare diets across subsistence modes [gatherer-hunter-fisher (GHF), early agriculture (EA) groups]; examine diet quality and diversity; and characterize differences by life course phase and environmental context defined using Köppen-Geiger …

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generation With The Presence Of Photovoltaic And Battery Energy Storage System Using Improved Barnacles Mating Optimizer, Ali Selim, Salah Kamel, Hossam Zawbaa, Baseem Khan, Francisco Jurado

Articles

This paper proposes an improved version of Barnacles mating optimizer (BMO) for solving the optimal allocation problem of distribution generator (DGs) in radial distribution systems (RDSs). BMO is a recent bioinspired optimization algorithm that mimics the intelligence behavior of Barnacles' mating. However, like with any metaheuristic optimization approach, it may face issues such as local optima trapping and low convergence rate. Hence, an improved BMO is adopted based on the quasi oppositional (QOBMO) and the chaos maps theories (CQOBMO). The two improvement methods are applied to increase the convergence performance of the conventional BMO. To prove the efficiency of the …

Interviews were recorded and transcribed. …

Bias Impedes Progress In Physical Biology, Consciousness Studies And Quantum Gravity, Maurice Goodman Jan 2022

Bias Impedes Progress In Physical Biology, Consciousness Studies And Quantum Gravity, Maurice Goodman

Articles

If scientists hope to make progress in consciousness studies they needs to accept that biased judgments have a major influence on the sciences, how we divide them up, how they are funded and this, in turn, has a profound impact on progress. The imbalance in funding, resulting from bias, in favour of the life and health sciences needs to be addressed as does why perversely little of this funding is devoted to a physics explanation of self-organisation and life on the mesoscopic scale? While life (the cell) is an outstanding example of self-organisation on the mesoscopic scale we need to …

Articles

Irradiation of the tumour site during treatment for cancer with external-beam ionising radiation results in a complex and dynamic series of effects in both the tumour itself and the normal tissue which surrounds it. The development of a spectral model of the effect of each exposure and interaction mode between these tissues would enable label free assessment of the effect of radiotherapeutic treatment in practice. In this study Fourier transform Infrared microspectroscopic imaging was employed to analyse an in-vitro model of radiotherapeutic treatment for prostate cancer, in which a normal cell line (PNT1A) was exposed to low-dose X-ray radiation from …

A Phylogeny Of Antirrhinum Reveals Parallel Evolution Of Alpine Morphology, Mario Durán-Castillo, Andrew Hudson, Yvette Wilson, David L. Field, Alex D. Twyford Jan 2022

A Phylogeny Of Antirrhinum Reveals Parallel Evolution Of Alpine Morphology, Mario Durán-Castillo, Andrew Hudson, Yvette Wilson, David L. Field, Alex D. Twyford

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Parallel evolution of similar morphologies in closely related lineages provides insight into the repeatability and predictability of evolution. In the genus Antirrhinum (snapdragons), as in other plants, a suite of morphological characters are associated with adaptation to alpine environments.

We tested for parallel trait evolution in Antirrhinum by investigating phylogenetic relationships using restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing. We then associated phenotypic information to our phylogeny to reconstruct the patterns of morphological evolution and related this to evidence for hybridisation between emergent lineages.

Phylogenetic analyses showed that the alpine character syndrome is present in multiple groups, suggesting that Antirrhinum has repeatedly …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In relation to the admissibility of evidence obtained using projective personality tests arose in F v. Bevándorlási és Állampolgársági Hivatam (2018). The Court of Justice of the European Union has held that an expert’s report can only be accepted if it is based on the international scientific community’s standards, but has refrained from stipulating what these standards are. It appears timely for European psychologists to decide what standards should be applied to determine whether or not a test is appropriate for psycholegal use. We propose standards and then apply them to the Rorschach because it was used in this case …

Art. 8.9 Ceta Investment And Regulatory Measures, Stefanie Schacherer

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Article 8.9 CETA on “Investment and Regulatory Measures” is at the centre of continuous and vigorous debate on how to ensure a proper balance between private business interests and the prerogative of States to regulate public welfare issue. The concerns expressed in the debate on the right to regulate are well-known. International investment agreements (IIAs) came under criticism due to their substantive protection standards, whose language is perceived as lacking in precision; as a consequence, they deliver too little policy flexibility. The protection standards together with the investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) system, moreover, afford high levels of discretion to the …

Persistent Stealthy Attacks And Their Detection In Large Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems, Simon Bech Thougaard

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are increasingly targeted by attackers using a wide and evolving array of methods. When these systems are distributed, every node represents a potential vulnerability, and secure system design must take this into account. Distributed CPSs also have the potential to better detect and handle attacks, by leveraging redundancies of physical measurements between adjacent nodes. The main purpose of this research is to determine the conditions that render a distributed CPS more resistant to attacks, and the conditions that render it more vulnerable. The work is centered around two separate applications: The Smart Grid and Autonomous Drone Swarms. …

Machine Learning Techniques For Network Analysis, Irfan Lateef

Dissertations

The network's size and the traffic on it are both increasing exponentially, making it difficult to look at its behavior holistically and address challenges by looking at link level behavior. It is possible that there are casual relationships between links of a network that are not directly connected and which may not be obvious to observe. The goal of this dissertation is to study and characterize the behavior of the entire network by using eigensubspace based techniques and apply them to network traffic engineering applications.

A new method that uses the joint time-frequency interpretation of eigensubspace representation for network statistics …
