Irisin Relaxes Rat Thoracic Aorta Through Inhibiting Signaling Pathways Implicatingprotein Kinase C, Sadetti̇n Demi̇rel, Serdar Şahi̇ntürk, Naci̇ye İşbi̇l, Fadil Özyener

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Irisin, a newly identified exercise-derived myokine, has been found involved in a peripheral vasodilator effect. However, little is known regarding the potential vascular activity of irisin, and the mechanisms underlying its effects on vascular smooth muscle have not been fully elucidated. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of irisin on vascular smooth muscle contractility in rat thoracic aorta, and the hypothesis that protein kinase C (PKC) may have a role in these effects. Materials and methods: Isometric contraction-relaxation responses of thoracic aorta rings were measured with an isolated organ bath model. The steady contraction was induced with …

Findings: The results confirmed that SCI, including internal, supplier and customer integrations, has significant effects on the dimensions of …

The Separation Of Legislative Powers In The Initiative Process, Anthony Johnstone Jan 2022

The Separation Of Legislative Powers In The Initiative Process, Anthony Johnstone

Nebraska Law Review

Direct democracy cannot implement itself. From Nebraska’s introduction of a state law authorizing the initiative at the local level in 1897,1 through the first constitutional amendments authorizing state-wide initiative processes in several states at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and subsequent efforts to expand the initiative power to approximately half the states,2 legislatures must share the legislative power with the people in states that provide the initiative. After the initial allocation of legislative power to initiative processes, usually through relatively detailed constitutional provisions, state legislatures become responsible for supporting the initiative power. In authorizing initiatives, state constitutions also authorize …

A Language For The World: The Standardization Of Swahili, Morgan J. Robinson Jan 2022

A Language For The World: The Standardization Of Swahili, Morgan J. Robinson

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This intellectual history of Standard Swahili explores the long-term, intertwined processes of standard making and community creation in the historical, political, and cultural contexts of East Africa and beyond.

Morgan J. Robinson argues that the portability of Standard Swahili has contributed to its wide use not only across the African continent but also around the globe. The book pivots on the question of whether standardized versions of African languages have empowered or oppressed. It is inevitable that the selection and promotion of one version of a language as standard—a move typically associated with missionaries and colonial regimes—negatively affected those …

Insect breeding or farming for food and feed is an emerging enterprise that can address the ever-growing demand for protein and curb high unemployment rates in Africa and beyond. However, for the sector to prosper, its value chain needs to be regulated to ensure sustainability and safety for consumers and the environment. Although a few African countries, such as Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, have promulgated standards on the use of insects as food and feed, greater efforts are needed in other countries, and relevant policies governing the sector need to be formulated. All over the globe, attention to the regulation …

Characterization Of Biochar As A Carbon Regulator In Manure And Environmental Management Applications, Josephine Getz Jan 2022

Characterization Of Biochar As A Carbon Regulator In Manure And Environmental Management Applications, Josephine Getz

Doctoral

Biochar is a product of pyrolysis, which is the thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures (300 - 900 °C) in an oxygen-limited atmosphere. Biochar has been recognized as a potentially vital tool to help reduce the climate change impact. It has been used in the agricultural sector as an addition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in several animal husbandry settings. The application in the animal sector is an important point to reduce the overall amount of greenhouse gases released as this sector produces many greenhouse gases. Though not in every case a reduction of emissions was the result of …

Onlife Harms: Uber And Sexual Violence, Amanda Turnbull Jan 2022

Onlife Harms: Uber And Sexual Violence, Amanda Turnbull

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Uber markets itself as a technology company that is managed primarily by ML algorithms with the support of human engineers. Yet, in its 2019 Report, the role that its technology played in relation to sexual violence is, for all intents and purposes, absent. Likewise, solutions dealing specifically with the role of technology in facilitating gender-based violence are also missing from the series of initiatives in which Uber has invested that are aimed at preventing sexual violence. Uber was not sufficiently rigorous in defining the problem it was trying to solve. It was a missed opportunity that has resulted in continued …

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generation With The Presence Of Photovoltaic And Battery Energy Storage System Using Improved Barnacles Mating Optimizer, Ali Selim, Salah Kamel, Hossam Zawbaa, Baseem Khan, Francisco Jurado Jan 2022

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generation With The Presence Of Photovoltaic And Battery Energy Storage System Using Improved Barnacles Mating Optimizer, Ali Selim, Salah Kamel, Hossam Zawbaa, Baseem Khan, Francisco Jurado

Articles

This paper proposes an improved version of Barnacles mating optimizer (BMO) for solving the optimal allocation problem of distribution generator (DGs) in radial distribution systems (RDSs). BMO is a recent bioinspired optimization algorithm that mimics the intelligence behavior of Barnacles' mating. However, like with any metaheuristic optimization approach, it may face issues such as local optima trapping and low convergence rate. Hence, an improved BMO is adopted based on the quasi oppositional (QOBMO) and the chaos maps theories (CQOBMO). The two improvement methods are applied to increase the convergence performance of the conventional BMO. To prove the efficiency of the …

Tales From A Placeholder: A Relational Journey With Land, Place, People And Self, Kalle O. Fox Jan 2022

Tales From A Placeholder: A Relational Journey With Land, Place, People And Self, Kalle O. Fox

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The proposed thesis is a collection of place-based, long- and-short-form creative nonfiction essays. The places of interest are where the author spent different amounts of time in during her twenties, including Iceland, Miami and Seaside, Florida, Butte and Missoula, Montana, and a series of National Parks on the western side of the Continental Divide. This thesis is informed what cultural geographer Yi Fu Tuan coined as topophilia: the affective bond between people and place. “Place” and “sense of place,” while each having their own array of definitions in environmental scholarship, are considered interchangeable in the context of my work. A …

Modeling Through, Ryan Calo Jan 2022

Modeling Through, Ryan Calo

Articles

Theorists of justice have long imagined a decision-maker capable of acting wisely in every circumstance. Policymakers seldom live up to this ideal. They face well-understood limits, including an inability to anticipate the societal impacts of state intervention along a range of dimensions and values. Policymakers cannot see around corners or address societal problems at their roots. When it comes to regulation and policy-setting, policymakers are often forced, in the memorable words of political economist Charles Lindblom, to “muddle through” as best they can.

Powerful new affordances, from supercomputing to artificial intelligence, have arisen in the decades since Lindblom’s 1959 article …

Food Security Through Disaster Planning In Tanzania: How Agriculture-Based Disaster Preparedness Can Improve Food Security In Tanzania, Savannah A. Emerich

Masters Theses

In Tanzania, half the population lives below the poverty line and suffers from food insecurity. Of the population, women and children primarily suffer from malnutrition due to food insecurity. For Tanzania, the problem is so severe that some women do not name their newborns for weeks or months due to their unlikely survival. This problem worsens for those who have a significant reliance on agriculture and live in the nation’s rural areas. These rural communities face more traumatic burdens when floods and droughts destroy crops, fields, and tools and ruin livelihoods. A solution has not been implemented thus far due …

Cargoes In Motion: Materiality And Connectivity Across The Indian Ocean, Burkhard Schnepel, Julia Verne Jan 2022

Cargoes In Motion: Materiality And Connectivity Across The Indian Ocean, Burkhard Schnepel, Julia Verne

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

An innovative collection of essays that foregrounds specific cargoes as a means to understand connectivity and mobility across the Indian Ocean world.

Scholars have long appreciated the centrality of trade and commerce in understanding the connectivity and mobility that underpin human experience in the Indian Ocean region. But studies of merchant and commercial activities have paid little attention to the role that cargoes have played in connecting the disparate parts of this vast oceanic world. Drawing from the work of anthropologists, geographers, and historians, Cargoes in Motion tells the story of how material objects have informed and continue to shape …

Sglt2 Inhibitors Therapy Protects Glucotoxicity-Induced Β-Cell Failure In A Mouse Model Of Human Katp-Induced Diabetes Through Mitigation Of Oxidative And Er Stress, Zeenat A. Shyr, Zihan Yan, Alessandro Ustione, Erin M. Egan, Maria S. Remedi

Open Access Publications

Progressive loss of pancreatic β-cell functional mass and anti-diabetic drug responsivity are classic findings in diabetes, frequently attributed to compensatory insulin hypersecretion and β-cell exhaustion. However, loss of β-cell mass and identity still occurs in mouse models of human KATP-gain-of-function induced Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus (NDM), in the absence of insulin secretion. Here we studied the temporal progression and mechanisms underlying glucotoxicity-induced loss of functional β-cell mass in NDM mice, and the effects of sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) therapy. Upon tamoxifen induction of transgene expression, NDM mice rapidly developed severe diabetes followed by an unexpected loss of insulin content, decreased …

Evaluation Of The Quality Changes Of Common Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Varieties During Storage In Hermetic Polyethylene Bags, Micah Rambeka Momanyi Jan 2022

Evaluation Of The Quality Changes Of Common Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Varieties During Storage In Hermetic Polyethylene Bags, Micah Rambeka Momanyi

All Master’s Theses

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are extensively cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa as a cheap source of proteins, starch, dietary fiber, and excellent mineral salts and vitamins. However, beans are lost due to poor post-harvest handling and storage practices that provide insufficient protection against storage insect pests. Therefore, farmers are forced to apply insecticides more than once in a storage period to achieve protection. Excessive use of chemicals is not safe for health and is uneconomical. Hermetic techniques for storage have attracted increasing attention in recent years as chemical-free methods to preserve food grains and protect them against storage insect pests. Whereas …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The large production volume combined with the high lignocellulose content makes elephant dung an attractive and underutilized biomass resource, but also presents waste management problems for elephant orphanages. This study explored the conversion of elephant dung into biochars by slow pyrolysis at 500°C for the recovery of phosphate. The unmodified biochar (BC500) had a specific surface area (SBET) of 62.5 m2×g-1 with point of zero charge (pHPZC) of 7.7. Biochar modification with MgCl2 (MgBC500) and FeCl3 (FeBC500) by pre-pyrolysis treatment affected the SBET (48.7 m2×g-1 and 259.4 m2×g-1, respectively) and pHPZC (8.7 and 3.3, respectively). In FeBC500, Fe was present …

Current literature indicates there is still some debate regarding the scope and severity of cancer treatment related cognitive impairment (CRCI), with a wide variety of complex factors contributing to cognitive decline and discrepancies between objective findings and patient self-report. This paper aims to provide guidelines for neuropsychological evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of CRCI in breast cancer patients based on current research. This paper also aims to discuss current research on proposed mechanisms of action for CRCI, the cognitive domains affected in CRCI, and significant bio-psycho-social risk factors impacting CRCI.

Attachment Theory To Inform Intervention In Correctional Populations With Adverse Childhood Experiences And Substance Use Disorders, Samantha Mendoza Jan 2022

Attachment Theory To Inform Intervention In Correctional Populations With Adverse Childhood Experiences And Substance Use Disorders, Samantha Mendoza

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Research shows a correlation exists between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and poor mental health such as psychiatric and substance use disorders (Adshead, 2018). Research further suggests a correlation between ACEs and insecure attachment in adults (Adshead, 2018). The National Institute on Drug Abuse (2020) estimates 85% of the correctional population either has a substance use disorder or was incarcerated for a drug-related offense. This paper theorizes that those involved in the correctional system with a history of high ACE scores and substance use also experience insecure attachment, which is not currently addressed in correctional SUD programs. Attachment theory moderates the …

Therapist Self-Disclosure With Mandated College Students: A Case Study, Zachary Lattanzio Jan 2022

Therapist Self-Disclosure With Mandated College Students: A Case Study, Zachary Lattanzio

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Facing the stark reality of a disturbing mental health crisis present in the college populations of the United States, college counseling centers (CCC) must figure out ways in which they can utilize all of their available limited resources, especially regarding potential high-risk students who are unlikely to seek treatment and those that pose a danger to self or others. In certain cases, mandated treatment can potentially mitigate or eliminate crises, and may serve as an effective intervention to students whose risky behavior may be normalized within the culture of colleges across the United States. However, while this course of treatment …

Mindfulness And The Relationship Between Connectedness To Nature And Affect, Mathew Stewart Jan 2022

Mindfulness And The Relationship Between Connectedness To Nature And Affect, Mathew Stewart

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Exposure to in-vivo and virtual nature has been shown to increase a person’s positive affect from a variety of mechanisms. Natural settings and green-spaces allow for the recovery of attentional resources whereas urban environments elicit opposite effects. Individuals who practice mindfulness in general exhibit greater attentional resources and potentially could see added benefit to their well-being through exposure to natural environments. This research investigated whether those who are more mindful receive greater benefits from exposure to virtual restorative natural environments compared to individuals who do not practice or engage with mindfulness regularly. Subjects viewed an urban, urban/nature, or nature representative …
