The Moral Foundations Of Attitudes Toward Mask Wearing, Kristen N. Leighton Jan 2022

The Moral Foundations Of Attitudes Toward Mask Wearing, Kristen N. Leighton

Theses and Dissertations

As COVID-19 becomes endemic it is important to understand individual differences in motivation and adherence to mask wearing policies and recommendations. Mask wearing appears to be one way to protect communities, slow the spread, and save lives when COVID-19 rates spike in communities The main study aim was to examine how Moral Foundations Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior, specifically subjective norms, may explain individual differences in mask wearing to slow the spread of COVID-19. Understanding the psychological correlates of why and how often individuals wear a mask to slow the spread of COVID-19 can help community leaders, public health …

Human Rights, Constitutional Rights, And Judicial Review: Comparing And Assessing Michael Perry's Early And Contemporary Arguments, Daniel O. Conkle Jan 2022

Human Rights, Constitutional Rights, And Judicial Review: Comparing And Assessing Michael Perry's Early And Contemporary Arguments, Daniel O. Conkle

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this Essay, I explore, compare, and evaluate two theoretical models of judicial review in individual rights cases, each proposed by Professor Michael J. Perry, albeit in books separated by three and a half decades. In his 1982 book, The Constitution, the Courts, and Human Rights: An Inquiry into the Legitimacy of Constitutional Policymaking by the Judiciary, Early Perry embraced an aggressive form of judicial activism, urging the Supreme Court to test political judgments through an open-ended search for political-moral truth. Contemporary Perry, by contrast, takes a very different approach. In his 2017 book, A Global Political Morality: Human Rights, …

Phenomenology Of How The Doctor-Patient Relationship Plays A Role In Cardiovascular, Sanam Sarahbi Jan 2022

Phenomenology Of How The Doctor-Patient Relationship Plays A Role In Cardiovascular, Sanam Sarahbi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in men and women for most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Physicians are the most frequently sought-after source of support for self-management of chronic diseases of patients. Social support from physicians may help facilitate patient resiliency. This phenomenological study involved using the social support theory as the theoretical lens and health literacy as the conceptual framework to explore how CVD patients perceive experiences with their physicians foster resiliency. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect rich descriptions of CVD patient experiences. Data were analyzed by using Moustakas’ modification of …

African American Women’S Body Image Perceptions And The Built Environment, Andrea Denise Smith Jan 2022

African American Women’S Body Image Perceptions And The Built Environment, Andrea Denise Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American (AA) women have a 54.8% overall obesity rate in the United States. This quantitative cross-sectional study’s aim was to determine what factors may have an impact on body image perceptions of AA women in Alabama and New Jersey. A gap in research this study addressed is sociodemographic and geographic differences that may impact obesity rates among AA women. The theoretical framework used for this study was the social cognitive theory. Secondary data were obtained from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Linear regression (LR) analyses results showed that none of the sociodemographic variables (education level, employment status, …

An Exploration On Apts In Biocybersecurity And Cyberbiosecurity, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Saltuk Karahan Jan 2022

An Exploration On Apts In Biocybersecurity And Cyberbiosecurity, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Saltuk Karahan

School of Cybersecurity Faculty Publications

Novel and complex digital threats that are increasingly interwoven with means and products of biology that can affect society. Much work in Biocybersecurity/Cyberbiosecurity (BCS/CBS) discuss vulnerabilities, but few deeply address malicious actor varieties as attacks at this intersection are new. The path to those attacks remains mostly theoretical, presenting considerable difficulty to accomplish in practical scenarios. In terms of advanced persistent threats (APTs) this of course needs to change as biomanufacturing facilities are at risk, considering Covid-19 and other potential pandemics. Further attacks are not out of reach and thus we must start to imagine how BCS APTs may appear. …

An Anatomy Of Nepal's Remarkable Export Decline, Rishi Sharma Jan 2022

An Anatomy Of Nepal's Remarkable Export Decline, Rishi Sharma

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

This paper documents and breaks down a remarkable decline in Nepal's exports over the 2000-2019 period. This decline is due to a collapse in the country's top export products and is largely uniform across destinations and products. Furthermore, it is not on account of the poor global performance of the sectors Nepal was specialized in but is something more specific to Nepal. Industry-level statistics show that gross output increased in major exporting industries while value-added grew slower or declined. The increase in gross output together with the decline in exports implies a movement towards producing for domestic consumption using more …

Injuries In Food Growers: Are There Gender Differences?, Patricia Siegel, Marcy Rinaldi Jan 2022

Injuries In Food Growers: Are There Gender Differences?, Patricia Siegel, Marcy Rinaldi

OT Research and Scholarship

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in the United States (2021). Data shows the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in farmers is high, with a lifetime prevalence of any form of musculoskeletal disorder at 90.6% (Osborne et. al., 2012). Men tend to be injured more often especially when working with farm machinery (Dimich-Ward et. al., 2004). Animal related injuries dominated for women (Dimich-Ward et. al., 2004). This research suggests that farming injuries could be different depending on the gender of the worker and the work they do.

Legal Recognition Of Animal Sentience: The Case For Cautious Optimism, Jane Kotzmann Jan 2022

Legal Recognition Of Animal Sentience: The Case For Cautious Optimism, Jane Kotzmann

Animal Sentience

Rowan et al.’s target article provides a valuable indication of the work that was required to reach the point where animals are recognised as sentient in various laws. To ensure this work was not in vain, the language of sentience needs to be used as a moral currency to demand further cultural change involving greater human respect for animals.

Cancer Vaccines From Cryogenically Silicified Tumour Cells Functionalized With Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns, Jimin Guo, Henning De May, Stefan Franco, Achraf Noureddine, Lien Tang, C J. Brinker, Donna F. Kusewitt, Sarah F. Adams, Rita E. Serda

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The production of personalized cancer vaccines made from autologous tumour cells could benefit from mechanisms that enhance immunogenicity. Here we show that cancer vaccines can be made via the cryogenic silicification of tumour cells, which preserves tumour antigens within nanoscopic layers of silica, followed by the decoration of the silicified surface with pathogen-associated molecular patterns. These pathogen-mimicking cells activate dendritic cells and enhance the internalization, processing and presentation of tumour antigens to T cells. In syngeneic mice with high-grade ovarian cancer, a cell-line-based silicified cancer vaccine supported the polarization of CD4+ T cells towards the T-helper-1 phenotype in the …

During two nights at the library, students were invited to interact with one of nine robotic animals. Five of the robots look and react like cats, four look and react like dogs. The robots mimic the motions and sounds of live animals, including purring and barking. Students took a stress pre-test prior to interacting with the robots and a stress post-test at the conclusion of their interaction. Faculty from the School of Communication and the University Libraries were on hand to observe the interaction and gather feedback. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how a partnership with a …

White Injury And Innocence: On The Legal Future Of Antiracism Education, Osamudia James Jan 2022

White Injury And Innocence: On The Legal Future Of Antiracism Education, Osamudia James

Faculty Publications

In the wake of the “racial reckoning” of 2020, antiracism education attracted intense attention and prompted renewed educator commitments to teach more explicitly about the function, operation, and harm of racism in the United States. The increased visibility of antiracism education engendered sustained critique and opposition, resulting in executive orders prohibiting its adoption in the federal government, the introduction or adoption of over sixty state-level bills attempting to control how race is taught in schools, and a round of lawsuits challenging antiracism education as racially discriminatory. Because antiracism so directly runs afoul of norms underlying American antidiscrimination law, including anticlassification, …

The Potential Of Bison Restoration As An Ecological Approach To Future Tribal Food Sovereignty On The Northern Great Plains, Hila Shamon, Olivia G. Cosby, Chamois L. Andersen, Helen Augare, Jony Bearcub Stiffarm, Claire E. Bresnan, Jeff M. Martin, Et Al.

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Future climate projections of warming, drying, and increased weather variability indicate that conventional agricultural and production practices within the Northern Great Plains (NGP) will become less sustainable, both ecologically and economically. As a result, the livelihoods of people that rely on these lands will be adversely impacted. This is especially true for Native American communities, who were relegated to reservations where the land is often vast but marginal and non-tribal operators have an outsized role in food production. In addition, NGP lands are expected to warm and dry disproportionately relative to the rest of the United States. It is therefore …

The Renewable, Sustainable, And Clean Energy In Iraq Between Reality And Ambition According To The Paris Agreement On Climate Change, Noah Mohammed Saleh, Ali Mohammed Saleh, Raed Abdulkareem Hasan, Hadi Hamdi Mahdi Jan 2022

The Renewable, Sustainable, And Clean Energy In Iraq Between Reality And Ambition According To The Paris Agreement On Climate Change, Noah Mohammed Saleh, Ali Mohammed Saleh, Raed Abdulkareem Hasan, Hadi Hamdi Mahdi

Mesopotamian Journal of Big Data

For quite some time now, Iraq has witnessed a great shortage, not only in the production of electric power, but even in the distribution system. In addition to this shortage, which exacerbates the problem is the large increase in the population of Iraq, in addition to the great problems that the country has experienced, especially the fierce confrontation with ISIS terrorist gangs, which drained a lot of Iraq’s human and material energies and negatively affected the energy reality in our country, not to mention the All or most of our electric power plants run on heavy fossil fuels and have …

Through researching the benefits of peer instruction, identifying core physiological concepts crucial to wholistic physiology education, and describing a student population hypothesized to benefit substantially from the work, I created educational videos to aid Dr. Hansen in her work as an educator and in the educational research she is striving …

State Ballot Initiatives And Federal Preemption: How Colorado Voters Have Changed Cooperative Federalism In Wildlife Management, Lucas O'Brien Jan 2022

State Ballot Initiatives And Federal Preemption: How Colorado Voters Have Changed Cooperative Federalism In Wildlife Management, Lucas O'Brien

Natural Resources Journal

In United States wildlife management, there is a notion that the federal government manages land while states manage wildlife. While it is true that states have historically held authority over wildlife, federal agencies often also have the authority, and often an obligation, to manage and conserve wildlife. This overlapping jurisdiction has led to the frequent preemption of state wildlife laws and management tactics by federal statutes or objectives, eroding state authority in this area over the past century. In the 2020 election, Colorado voters passed Proposition 114, a state ballot initiative that requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife to reintroduce wolves …

More Than A Rake: Toward A Statutory Solution For Wildfire Threats To Department Of Defense Installations, Steven L. Spencer Ii Major Jan 2022

More Than A Rake: Toward A Statutory Solution For Wildfire Threats To Department Of Defense Installations, Steven L. Spencer Ii Major

Natural Resources Journal

Over the past four decades, the average area annually burned in wildfires in the United States has roughly quadrupled. Larger, more powerful wildfires increasingly threaten inhabited areas as well as vital infrastructure, including many installations of the United States Armed Forces. This article first introduces readers to what wildfire is and the unique challenges it creates to the environment, health and, specifically, to the Department of Defense (DoD). Next, it discusses the dominant approaches to addressing the wildfire threat, prescribed fire and mechanical treatment. It then summarizes the primary laws, policies and partners involved in wildfire policy in the United …

Effects Of Environmental Warming On Clarias Gariepinus Growth And Physiology, Dean Cahill Jan 2022

Effects Of Environmental Warming On Clarias Gariepinus Growth And Physiology, Dean Cahill

Capstone Showcase

Fresh water makes up about 0.8% of the Earth’s surface and is home to six percent of its species. Environmental warming is projected to have a significant effect on freshwater systems as the century progresses. They are susceptible to irreversible damage because fresh water availability and temperature is dependent of climate. The Clarias gariepinus, or the African Catfish, is popular among aquaculture in Africa and Asia because of its rapid growth, quick reproduction, and hardiness. The goal of my thesis was to examine the effect of environmental warming and elevated temperatures on the growth and physiology of Clarias gariepinus populations …

Recolonization Of Microbiomes’ Influence On Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hattie Cole Jan 2022

Recolonization Of Microbiomes’ Influence On Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hattie Cole

Capstone Showcase

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of studies conducted on the complications of gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. Some of these GI issues include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea and constipation. The causes of these disorders are poorly understood. The dominant gut phyla are Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Research conducted on children with ASD compared with typical developing (TD) children showed higher ratios of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes in the ASD group. Biflobacterium, Actinobacteria phyla, has been shown to be a good intestinal bacterium that may help with …

Bodily Autonomy And Anti-Vaccine Discourse During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Sherman Jan 2022

Bodily Autonomy And Anti-Vaccine Discourse During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Sherman

Capstone Showcase

This paper explores the relationship between anti-vaccine discourse and ideas about bodily autonomy. I analyze the cyclical nature of vaccine hesitancy and show that it can lead to misinformation and harmful narratives. This paper uses theories of bodily autonomy that identify a concept called moral obligation. This concept, as explored by Alberto Giubilini, is a utilitarian approach in which citizens have a responsibility to their governments to get vaccinated so that, in turn, their governments can fulfill their obligation of protecting other individuals’ health (Giubilini 2020, 54). A discourse analysis of four key players in the anti-vax movement shows that …

The Outcomes Of Cemented Versus Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty In Modern Day Patients With Osteoarthritis, Jordan Powelson Jan 2022

The Outcomes Of Cemented Versus Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty In Modern Day Patients With Osteoarthritis, Jordan Powelson

Capstone Showcase

Osteoarthritis (OA), the degeneration of cartilage and bone, is the most progressive musculoskeletal disease and a leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting over 27 million adults. Although conservative treatments for knee OA are available, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the only definitive treatment for end-stage knee OA. For the past several decades, the use of bone cement has been the gold standard for total knee arthroplasty, but the cementless TKA is being revisited as an option as the age of patients seeking TKA decreases and the average BMI increases. This review analyzes and compares the outcomes of …

Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Fair, Bryan K. Jan 2022

Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Fair, Bryan K.

Santa Clara Law Review

The purpose of this Article is to lay bare federalism by deception and the theory of implied limits on federal power. Other scholars have recently noted the rise of anti-federalist viewpoints in modern cases. I go a step further to demonstrate how Supreme Court Justices have embraced anti-federal ideology, but have cited Federalist sources, including Marshall, to announce unenumerated limits on federal legislative power.
