This critical biography of lexicographer, linguist, and dialectologist Dr. John Algeo delves into his corpus of research data and notes and seeks to analyze his methods and the resulting wealth of publications derived from their compilation. It also aims provide a succinct overview of his life and career. Algeo experienced many changes within these fields; perhaps most notably, the advent of technological advances that made data collection and storage easier, such as the Internet and computer processes. As a result, his work lends itself as an incredible historic model and, as such, will be compared to current techniques of dictionary-making. …

Changes In The Zooplankton Community In Barren River Lake (South Central Ky) Between 2008 And 2020, Laurel Philpott Jan 2022

Changes In The Zooplankton Community In Barren River Lake (South Central Ky) Between 2008 And 2020, Laurel Philpott

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Zooplankton are small aquatic animals that serve an important role in transferring energy from phytoplankton to higher trophic levels. The zooplankton community composition in Barren River Lake from 2008 and 2020 was compared. A field study was conducted to not only describe the seasonal population dynamics of zooplankton in Barren River Lake, but also to determine if an invasive zooplankton, Daphnia lumholtzi, was present. While D. lumholtzi was found throughout Barren River Lake in 2008, it was absent from both resampled sites in 2019 and 2020. This, along with erratic patterns of emergence in several other zooplankton species, indicates …

Effects Of Melatonin Implantation On The Activity Levels Of Captive Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Zoë Ward Jan 2022

Effects Of Melatonin Implantation On The Activity Levels Of Captive Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Zoë Ward

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In vertebrates, melatonin regulates many components of the circadian rhythm; depending on the organism’s location and time of year, the pineal gland will produce melatonin accordingly, controlling the sleep-wake cycle and breeding physiologies. However, locations at the poles in which the sun is above the horizon for multiple days at a time pose unique challenges for the organisms living there. The goal of this study was to examine how the implantation of melatonin in an arctic-breeding songbird affects its activity levels and circadian rhythm. The subject of this study, the snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis), is a small songbird …

The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel Jan 2022

The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The body is a term that has been vastly manipulated but never fully trapped. The body is in constant transformation and movement, always becoming. Catherine Malabou claims that our bodies are plastic, meaning they have the capacity to give and receive form as well as to explode. Plasticity which has an element of temporality is resistance, it is multiple and transformational. What are the conditions of possibility for the body to transform? Art resists and dance as art resists with the body: its main medium is the body. I claim that dance as art is a site to put plasticity …

Sequencing The Mitochondrial Dna Of Lagenidium Juracyae, Kunal Kanwar Jan 2022

Sequencing The Mitochondrial Dna Of Lagenidium Juracyae, Kunal Kanwar

Honors Theses

Lagenidium oomycetes are fungus-like eukaryotic microorganisms that are closely related to diatoms and brown algae. One defining characteristic of Lagenidium oomycetes is their ability to act as a parasite during the larval stage of mosquitoes. Thus, over the past few decades, mosquito infecting Lagenidium oomycetes have been considered to serve as pesticides in various industries. However, some Lagenidium oomycetes have been linked to new mammalian skin conditions, particularly in dogs. As more research has been conducted about these skin conditions, there has been new data showing the presence of new species of Lagenidium oomycetes aside from the most popular Lagenidium …

This quasi-experimental quantitative study investigated the effects of different formats of multimediaenhanced instruction on knowledge gain and retention of second language learners. The study focused specifically on assessing Mayer’s redundancy principle. Second language learners were randomly assigned into two groups and were presented with two formats of a multimedia-enhanced lesson: (1) images with audio and (2) images with audio and on-screen text. A repeatedmeasures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out to evaluate change between pretest and immediate posttest, mean differences in knowledge gain between the two groups, group differences in growth from pretest to immediate posttest, change between immediate …

What’S The Beef? The Fda, Usda, And Cell-Cultured Meat, Tammi S. Etheridge Jan 2022

What’S The Beef? The Fda, Usda, And Cell-Cultured Meat, Tammi S. Etheridge

Washington and Lee Law Review

Over the past ten years, administrative law scholarship has increasingly focused on interactions between multiple agencies. As part of this trend, most scholars have called for policymakers to combine multiple agencies, rather than rely on a single agency, to solve policy problems. The literature in this area espouses the benefits of shared regulatory space. But very little of this scholarship addresses when shared jurisdiction is problematic. This is particularly concerning when an agency opts into or cedes oversight authority to another agency at will, with little regard for whether the second agency is an appropriate regulator. The case of cell-cultured …

P-Selectin And Complement’S Role In A Neonatal Model Of Germinal Matrix Hemorrhage-Induced Secondary Injury, Devin Scott Hatchell Jan 2022

P-Selectin And Complement’S Role In A Neonatal Model Of Germinal Matrix Hemorrhage-Induced Secondary Injury, Devin Scott Hatchell

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Germinal Matrix Hemorrhage (GMH) is a devastating neurologic pathology in neonates that leads to impaired neurodevelopmental processes and approximately 90% rate of morbidity and mortality within two years in severe cases. Recent studies in our lab have indicated a role for complement in the initiation and propagation of secondary injury after GMH, which includes neuroinflammation and hydrocephalus development. Here we investigate a strategy to target complement inhibition specifically to sites of P-selectin expression, a relevant adhesion molecule at sites of vascular injury/inflammation, as well as investigate the role of P-selectin in leukocyte recruitment and the propagation GMH secondary injury. We …

The Impact Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1b On Impaired Insulin Signaling And Cognitive Impairment, Alexus S. Williams Jan 2022

The Impact Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1b On Impaired Insulin Signaling And Cognitive Impairment, Alexus S. Williams

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

High-fat diet (HFD) in mice, a mouse model of diet-induced obesity, display cognitive deficits, which correlate with hyperinsulinemia and reduced levels of brain insulin. The binding of insulin to the insulin receptor leads to tyrosine auto-phosphorylation of the receptor, which is a necessary step for the initiation of insulin transport. Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) dephosphorylates tyrosine residues on the Insulin receptor. We hypothesize that diet-induced increases in PTP1B levels inhibits insulin receptor signaling contributing to cognitive impairment. To accomplish this, PTP1B levels, tyrosine phosphorylation, and cognition was assessed in mice placed on either a standard diet (STD) or HFD …

Role Of Perirhinal To Prefrontal Cortex Reciprocal Connection In Methamphetamine-Induced Memory Deficits, Jordan Hopkins Jan 2022

Role Of Perirhinal To Prefrontal Cortex Reciprocal Connection In Methamphetamine-Induced Memory Deficits, Jordan Hopkins

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Chronic use of methamphetamine (meth) disrupts cortical processing across multiple cognitive domains including impulsivity, decision making and memory. Our laboratory has consistently shown that extended access to contingent meth self-administration reliably produces memory deficits in novel object recognition (NOR) tasks designed to test the “what” component of episodic memory in a rodent model. This type of memory is dependent on an intact function of the perirhinal cortex (PRH). However, the ongoing role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in this task and the directionality of communication between the PRH and the PFC is not entirely understood. A set of four experiments …

The Rural Settlements Of Hellenistic And Post-Hellenistic Central Asia: An Archaeology Of Indigenous Life Under Colonial Rule, Zachary W. Silvia Jan 2022

The Rural Settlements Of Hellenistic And Post-Hellenistic Central Asia: An Archaeology Of Indigenous Life Under Colonial Rule, Zachary W. Silvia

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Hellenistic Central Asia is among the most exoticized areas of study for Classical and Near Eastern archaeological research due to the discovery of ancient Greek colonies in the modern nations of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Most notable is the excavations of the Hellenistic “new foundation” at Ai Khanoum in the Dasht-i Qala Plain of northeast Afghanistan. This dissertation approaches Greek rule in Central Asia from a post-colonial perspective in decentering scholarly emphases on Hellenism in the east in favor of a new paradigm that emphasizes the diversity of indigenous lifeways among ancient, colonized Bactrians and Sogdians. Drawing on a vast …

Supporting Stylized Language Models Using Multi-Modality Features, Chengxi Li Jan 2022

Supporting Stylized Language Models Using Multi-Modality Features, Chengxi Li

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

As AI and machine learning systems become more common in our everyday lives, there is an increased desire to construct systems that are able to seamlessly interact and communicate with humans. This typically means creating systems that are able to communicate with humans via natural language. Given the variance of natural language, this can be a very challenging task. In this thesis, I explored the topic of humanlike language generation in the context of stylized language generation. Stylized language generation involves producing some text that exhibits a specific, desired style. In this dissertation, I specifically explored the use of multi-modality …

Further Investigation Of The Initiating Mechanism Of The Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, Matthew James Freese Jan 2022

Further Investigation Of The Initiating Mechanism Of The Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, Matthew James Freese

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The progressive accumulation of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins in the renal mesangium results in fibrosis, glomerulosclerosis, and eventual renal failure. Mice deficient in integrating α2(I) collagen into the type I collagen structure, termed Col1a2-deficient mice, model kidney fibrosis through the condition Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, because homotrimeric type I collagen accumulates extracellularly in the mesangium of renal glomeruli. Accumulation of homotrimeric type I collagen compresses blood vessels in glomeruli, which reduces filtration, increases pressure, and results in fibrosis. Picrosirius red (PSR) staining was used on Col1a2 deficient and wildtype mice to evaluate collagen deposition. Histological evaluation and …

First Long-Time Airborne Fungal Spores Study In Dublin, Ireland (1978–1980), Moisés Martínez-Bracero, Emma Markey, Jerry Hourihane Clancy, John Sodeau, David J. O'Connor

Articles

Ambient fungal spores within the atmosphere can contribute to a range of negative human, animal and plant health conditions and diseases. However, trends in fungal spore seasonality, species prevalence, and geographical origin have been significantly understudied in Ireland. Previously unpublished data from the late 1970s have recently been collected and analysed to establish historical fungal spore trends/characteristics for Dublin. Historical spore concentrations were largely dominated by Alternaria, Ascospores, Basidiospores, Botrytis, Cladosporium, Erysiphe and Rusts. The main fungal spore season for Dublin commenced in April with the fructification of Scopulariopsis and Ganoderma. However, the vast majority of other spore types did …

Airborne Fungal Spore Review, New Advances And Automatisation, Moisés Martínez-Bracero, Emma Markey, Jerry Hourihane Clancy, Eoin Mcgillicuddy, Gavin Sewell, David J. O'Connor

Articles

Fungal spores make up a significant portion of Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAPs) with large quantities of such particles noted in the air. Fungal particles are of interest because of their potential to affect the health of both plants and humans. They are omnipresent in the atmosphere year-round, with concentrations varying due to meteorological parameters and location. Equally, differences between indoor and outdoor fungal spore concentrations and dispersal play an important role in occupational health. This review attempts to summarise the different spore sampling methods, identify the most important spore types in terms of negative effects on crops and the …

Sources And Therapeutic Strategies Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Regenerative Medicine, Mohamed M. Kamal, Dina H. Kassem

Pharmacy

During the past decade, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have made their mark as a potential weapon in regenerative medicine. Since their first isolation by Friedenstein in the late 1970s of the last century, MSCs have opened new avenues in the field of regenerative medicine. The main fascination about MSCs lies in their ease of isolation and large ex vivo expansion capacity, as well as demonstrated multipotency and immunomodulatory activities. Basically, several reports have proved that MSCs isolated from different sources possess different characteristics and potentials. In addition, the mechanisms by which these cells can help regenerate tissues and treat several …

Pharmacy

Global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) provokes infammation that augments neuropathic pain. Cilostazol (CLZ) has pleiotropic efects including neuroprotection in several ravaging central disorders; nonetheless, its potential role in transient central ischemic-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia has not been asserted before. Rats were allocated into 4 groups; sham, sham+CLZ, and 45 min-bilateral carotid occlusion followed by a 48 h-reperfusion period either with or without CLZ (50 mg/ kg; p.o) post-treatment. CLZ prolonged latency of hindlimb withdrawal following von Frey flaments, 4 °C cold, and noxious mechanical stimulations. Histopathological alterations and the immunoexpression of glial fbrillary acidic protein induced by I/R were reduced by …

A Novel Cyanopyridine Derived Fluorescent Sensor For Selective Determination Of Uranyl Ions In Different Water Samples, Ekram Hany Mohamed, Amany R Salem, Abeer M. El-Naggar,, Mohammed A. Amin,, Mohamed S. S. Attia

Pharmacy

A newly developed spectrofluorometric method is based on the fabrication of an optical cyanopyridine derived sensor, 4-(6-diaryl)-2-oxo -1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile using microwave irradiation. The fluorescence intensity of the proposed chemo sensor was obviously quenched in DMSO owing to the presence of UO22+ ions at λex/λem = 320/360 nm. The quenching effect of the cyano-derivative based sensor was found to be proportional to the concentration of UO22+ ion ranging between 9.60 × 10–9–5.28 × 10–5 mol L−1 with a detection and quantification limits of 1.71 × 10–11 and 5.2 × 10–11 mol L−1, respectively. © 2021, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

The global demand for sea urchin as seafood is currently unmet. Despite exploitation of > 40 species across the world, there is a need to identify other candidate species, especially in regions where diversification in production is sought where species are considered native. The Eastern US presents an opportunity to determine the marketability of the currently unexploited Arbacia punctulata which is naturally distributed from Massachusetts and southwards into the Gulf of Mexico. To determine whether A. punctulata had market potential, it was fed one of the following diets to determine whether the gonad tissue (uni) could be manipulated to increase gonad …

Evaluating respiratory health is important in the management of cetaceans, which are vulnerable to respiratory diseases. Quantifying the expression of genes related to immune function within the respiratory tract could be a valuable tool for directly assessing respiratory health. Blow (exhale) samples allow DNA analysis, and we hypothesized that RNA could also be isolated from blow samples for gene expression studies of immune function. We evaluated the potential to extract RNA from beluga blow samples and tested whether transcripts associated with immune function could be detected with endpoint polymerase chain reaction. A total of 54 blow samples were collected from …

"On the evening of July 1, 2013, Amos Wells was upset that his pregnant girlfriend, Chanice Reed, would not answer his calls. He then drove to where she, her mother Annette, and ten-year-old brother Eddie, lived. After arguing with Chanice and yelling at the top of his voice in a “bone-chilling scream,” Wells retrieved a handgun from his Chevrolet Tahoe parked in front of the house, and shot Chanice in the front yard as she screamed, “No, no, no.” Her mother then tried to bat the gun away before he shot her too. Further shots were heard before Wells finally …
