Mortality In Interspecific Hybrids Of Nasonia Vitripennis And Nasonia Giraulti, Bonnie Cobb
Mortality In Interspecific Hybrids Of Nasonia Vitripennis And Nasonia Giraulti, Bonnie Cobb
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Nasonia is a parasitoid wasp genus that serves as an emerging model for studying speciation due to an incompatibility between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes between sister taxa. Short generation times, easy rearing in a lab setting, producing large amounts of progeny, and whole genome sequencing make Nasonia is an excellent candidate for studying incomplete reproductive isolation. Nasonia have five chromosomes and exhibit haplo-diploid sex determination in which fertilized eggs develop into diploid females and unfertilized eggs develop into haploid males. Recessive phenotypes are hidden in diploid females but are laid bare in haploid males as there is no interaction between …

Establishing Pteridine Metabolism In A Breast Cancer Cell Model And Quantification Of Silver Nanoparticle Interactions With Yeast Cells Using Mass Spectrometry, Lindsey Katherine Rasmussen
Doctoral Dissertations
"Recent advances in analytical methods have furthered the quantitative insights that can be gleaned from cellular analyses, with applications in cancer and nanoparticle research. In the first part of the research presented, a recently developed HPLC-MS/MS method was advanced to elucidate pteridine metabolism in an isogenic progressive MCF10A breast cancer cell model. The folate-derived pteridine pathway in breast cells was established by individually dosing cell cultures with folic acid and 15 pteridines. Eight potential pteridine biomarkers in breast cancer cells were identified including pterin and isoxanthopterin, which yielded the first in vitro evidence for the cellular metabolisms behind previously reported …

Industry 4.0 Remanufacturing: A Novel Approach Towards Smart Remanufacturing, Prashansa Ragampeta
Industry 4.0 Remanufacturing: A Novel Approach Towards Smart Remanufacturing, Prashansa Ragampeta
Masters Theses
“Smart remanufacturing has become more popular in recent years as a result of its multiple benefits and the growing need for society to encourage a circular economy that leads to sustainability. One of the most common end-of-life (EoL) choices that can lead to a circular economy is remanufacturing. As a result, at the end-of-life stage of a product, it is critical to prioritize this choice over other accessible options because it is the only recovery option that retains the same quality as a new product. This work focuses on the numerous technologies that can aid in the improvement of smart …
Validation Of Edna Metabarcoding : A Comparison To Traditional Survey Methods In Ozark Streams, Veronica Marian Lee
Validation Of Edna Metabarcoding : A Comparison To Traditional Survey Methods In Ozark Streams, Veronica Marian Lee
Masters Theses
Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling provides a method for assessing fish communities that has potential as a supplement to traditional sampling methods due to its ability to save time as well as its non-invasive nature. This is a method in which from just one sample, eDNA from multiple individual species are able to be sequenced in tandem and the resulting reads identified to describe a community. In order to evaluate this technique and its efficacy for monitoring fish community diversity, we collected water samples alongside surveys performed by the Missouri Department of Conservation sampling program in summers 2020-21. DNA were extracted …

Summer Habitat Use, Home Range, And Effect Of Catch And Release Mortality On The Trophy Potential Of Muskellunge, (Esox Masquinongy, Mitchill, 1824), In A Southern Reservoir Population, Peter Isaac Jenkins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research on Muskellunge (Esox masquinongy, Mitchill, 1824) catch-and-release mortality has been historically focused on the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ontario. In the southern portion of their range, which we consider to be the portion of the species distribution south of the Mason-Dixon Line (~40°N), Muskellunge, may experience significantly warmer temperatures than those in previous studies and anglers have expressed concern about summer catch-and-release mortality. As part of a broader study to quantify catch-and-release summer mortality in the southern range of Muskellunge, we utilized radio telemetry and active tracking to verify individual movement and survival of Muskellunge in Stonewall …

Tools used by agencies and organizations like the Forest Service (FS), the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Central Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative (CASRI) to help guide red spruce (Picea rubens) ecosystem restoration within Central Appalachia could better address outcomes from management practices implemented in terms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock changes. These high-elevation landscapes have a natural capacity to produce diverse ecosystem services that affect humans, animals, and plants alike. Ecological site descriptions (ESD) are an important tool used to restore impacted landscapes and provide detailed management prescriptions specific to red spruce ecological …
An Exploration Of The Effects Of Mindfulness On Pain: The Role Of Pain Catastrophizing, Ilana Haliwa
An Exploration Of The Effects Of Mindfulness On Pain: The Role Of Pain Catastrophizing, Ilana Haliwa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic pain is a complex global public health concern associated with a host of negative outcomes, including loss of productivity, decreased quality of life, and greater likelihood of developing a mental health disorder. Initial evidence indicates that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) improve pain symptomatology. However, most MBIs are time and resource intensive, and it is unclear how mindfulness may improve the pain experience. The purpose of the present set of studies was to test the effects of a brief, app-based MBI on pain experience, and to examine whether pain catastrophizing was a statistical mediator of any effect. Two studies were conducted …
Combinatorial Approaches For Effective Design, Synthesis, And Optimization Of Enzyme-Based Conjugates, Jordan Scott Chapman
Combinatorial Approaches For Effective Design, Synthesis, And Optimization Of Enzyme-Based Conjugates, Jordan Scott Chapman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The specificity and efficiency with which enzymes catalyze selective chemical reactions far exceeds the performance of traditional heterogeneous catalysts that are predominant in industrial applications such as conversion of commodity chemicals to value-added products, fuel cells, and petroleum refinement. Moreover, biocatalysts exhibit exceptionally high product turnover at ambient conditions with little health and environmental burden. These advantageous qualities have led to the prolific use of enzyme catalysis in pharmaceutical, detergents, and food preservation industries wherein their use has greatly reduced waste generation, Unfortunately, the full slate of benefits that enzymes can impart to a broader range of chemical processes is …
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Preclinical behavioral neuroscience often uses choice paradigms to capture psychiatric symptoms. In particular, the subfield of operant research produces nested datasets with many discrete choices in a session. The standard analytic practice is to aggregate choice into a continuous variable and analyze using ANOVA or linear regression. However, choice data often have multiple interdependent outcomes of interest, violating an assumption of general linear models. The aim of the current study was to quantify the accuracy of linear mixed-effects regression (LMER) for analyzing data from a 4-choice operant task called the Rodent Gambling Task (RGT), which measures decision-making in the context …

Barriers To The Implementation Of Effective Sustainable Development Plans In Sierra Leone: Stakeholders’ Perspectives, Mohamed Nabie Turay
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract:Stakeholders’ competing positions with elected officials created barriers to the effective implementation of sustainable environmental policies. This study aimed to explore the barriers to implementing the National Environmental Policies (NEP), passed by the parliament of Sierra Leone in the 1990s. Sabastier and Jenkin-Smith’s advocacy coalition framework model provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The key research question explored is stakeholders’ perceptions of the barriers to effectively building coalitions to implement sustainable development policies like the NEP in Sierra Leone. A case study research approach was used to understand the barriers to implementing the NEP in Sierra Leone. Data were …

An Exploration Of The Contribution Of Embodied, Situated Research Strategies To Cultural Ecosystem Services And Landscape Assessment Frameworks: An Environmental Empathy Case Study, Klara Łucznik, Joane V. Serrano, John Martin
Professional Services
Since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, interest has increased in cultural ecosystem services (CESs) research to understand the complexity of the non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. The intangible and interactive characteris-tics of CESs present many challenges regarding how to approach, quantify and even de-fine CESs. In this paper, we suggest looking at CESs through the lens of embodied and situated cognition theories. We advocate that such an approach should be applied to the development stage of CES research projects, as the embodied and situated experience of the site aids the development of research questions and future interventions. …

Social Media As A Medium To Promote Local Perception Expression In China’S World Heritage Sites, Xiaoxu Liang, Naisi Hua, John Martin, Elena Dellapiana, Cristina Coscia, Yu Zhang
Professional Services
The assessment of public participation is one of the most fundamental components of holistic and sustainable cultural heritage management. Since the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic became a catalyst for the transformation of participatory tools. Collaboration with stakeholders moved online due to the strict restrictions preventing on-site activities. This phenomenon provided an opportunity to formulate more comprehensive and reasonable urban heritage protection strategies. However, very few publications mentioned how social networking sites’ data could support humanity-centred heritage management and participatory evaluation. Taking five World Cultural Heritage Sites as research samples, the study provides a methodology to evaluate online participatory …
Disparate Discrimination, Leah M. Litman
Disparate Discrimination, Leah M. Litman
Michigan Law Review
This Article explains and analyzes a recent trend in the Supreme Court’s cases regarding unintentional discrimination, where the argument is that a law has the effect of producing a disadvantage on members of a particular group. In religious discrimination cases, the Court has held that a law is presumptively unconstitutional if the law results in a comparable secular activity being treated more favorably than religious activity. Yet in racial discrimination cases, the Court has said the mere fact that a law more severely disadvantages racial minorities as a group does not suffice to establish unlawful discrimination.
The two tracks for …
A Scenography Of Inscriptions And Intangibles In The Birthing Room, Johara Bellali
A Scenography Of Inscriptions And Intangibles In The Birthing Room, Johara Bellali
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Inscriptions on graph paper, on monitors and on various screensare ubiquitous in the birthing room; they reassure, worry, beep, light up and inform protocols. According to Latour (1985) theirpresence is not a result of a carefully planned logical choice, butof a legacy of mustering allies and convincing alignments. UsingBarad’s (2007) framework of agential realism, this paper explores thenotion of intra-actions between objects and agencies of observationin the phenomenon of birth, using a socio-political and historicalconfiguration. It presents some surprising accounts of obstetricsand gynaecology and showcases how historical inscriptions andinstruments materialized today’s birthing practices. It then presentshow, upon entering the birthing room, …

“Black Is In Fashion”: The Black Body As A Commodity In Jordan Peele’S Get Out, Jeffrey Camille
“Black Is In Fashion”: The Black Body As A Commodity In Jordan Peele’S Get Out, Jeffrey Camille
Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize
Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out (2017) presents a contemporary form of Black subjugation characterized by the morbid fixation on black bodies. Whereas racist systems of the past, such as slavery, emphasized the overt oppression of Black individuals, Peele’s dystopia focuses on covert Black oppression made possible by white people's obsession with what they perceive as the “superior” prowess and attractiveness of black bodies. Nonetheless, past racist systems and Peele’s own racist structures share the same goal: control of the black body for the benefit of whites. My research, therefore, explores the racial dynamics between the white and Black characters …
Our Constitutionalism Of Force, Farah Peterson
Our Constitutionalism Of Force, Farah Peterson
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The Founders’ constitution—the one they had before the Revolution and the one they fought the Revolution to preserve—was one in which violence played a lawmaking role. An embrace of violence to assert constitutional claims is worked deeply into our intellectual history and culture. It was entailed upon us by the Founding generation, who sincerely believed that people “are only as free as they deserve to be” and that one could tell how much freedom people deserved by how much blood they were willing to shed to obtain it. This constitutionalism of force survived ratification. Its legacy is a constitutional order …
Optional Price Discrimination, Lee Anne Fennell
Optional Price Discrimination, Lee Anne Fennell
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Price discrimination gets a bad rap. It is associated with the exploitation of monopoly power and with opportunistically extracting surplus from consumers. As merchants develop ever-more-powerful mechanisms for gathering and compiling information about consumers, the specter of fully personalized pricing seems to loom as an ominous threat. Despite past economic defenses of price discrimination as an efficient and even consumer-friendly move in some contexts,1 recent writing highlights the perceived unfairness of tailoring prices to willingness to pay, especially when this is accomplished through “big data.”2
Yet a parallel phenomenon quietly coexists with all this distress over personalized prices: …
Militant Democracy Comes To The Metaverse, Aziz Z. Huq
Militant Democracy Comes To The Metaverse, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Parlor are an increasingly central part of the democratic public sphere in the United States. But the prevailing view of this platform-based public sphere has of late become increasingly dour and pessimistic. What were once seen as technologies of liberation have come to be viewed with skepticism as channels and amplifiers of “antisystemic” forces, damaging the quality and feasibility of democracies. If correct, this skepticism yields an interesting tension: How can the state protect its democratic character against unravelling pressure from actors who are necessary components of democratic practice in the …

In The Best Interest Of The Family: The Outcomes Of Children In Foster Care With An Incarcerated Parent And The Adverse Implications Of The Adoptions And Safe Families Act, Tamarie Willis
Wayne State University Dissertations
Approximately 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives. An estimated 8% of children in foster care were removed because of parental incarceration, with a similar percentage annually for the past five years. Research has shown that 1 in 8 of these cases, incarcerated parents lose their parental rights, regardless of the seriousness of their offenses. The lack of coordination between systems has presented the majority of the barriers to contact between the incarcerated parents and children. And with the passing of the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) of 1997, this task has become …
Photoacoustic Imaging For Image-Guided Interventions, Samuel John
Photoacoustic Imaging For Image-Guided Interventions, Samuel John
Wayne State University Dissertations
Image-guided surgeries and therapeutic procedures utilize imaging modalities to enhance the surgeon’s capability of visualizing and guiding the medical instruments within the body. One such application is the endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), which utilizes an ultrasound (US)-guided catheter carrying high power continuous wave (CW) energy for treating varicose veins. Varicose veins, a condition defined by venous insufficiency, affects nearly 40 million people in the United States annually. In EVLA procedures, US limitations including angular dependency, poor contrast-to-noise ratio, poor signal-to-noise ratio, and artifacts limit the ability of the surgeon to detect the catheter tip within the vein. Furthermore, the absence …
The Sweet Smell Of Mystery: The Scent Glands Of Oncopeltus Fasciatus, Despina Tsitlakidou
The Sweet Smell Of Mystery: The Scent Glands Of Oncopeltus Fasciatus, Despina Tsitlakidou
Wayne State University Theses
Scent glands (ScGs) are defensive glands that are found among a wide variety of insect orders. These glands represent a specialized function of the exocrine system; however, the developmental mechanism remains unclear. Previous functional studies of the endocrine glands revealed that the endocrine and tracheal systems utilize similar genetic regulatory networks which indicate that these systems have common primordia. In Drosophila, sal is localized in the prothoracic gland while in Oncopeltus the gene is localized in the duct cells of the abdominal scent glands (Hanna & Popadić, 2020; Sánchez-Higueras et al., 2014). RNAi mediated knockdown of sal resulted in significant …
The Effects Of Gestational Exposure To Buprenorphine Or Morphine On Offspring Development, Abigail Myers
The Effects Of Gestational Exposure To Buprenorphine Or Morphine On Offspring Development, Abigail Myers
Wayne State University Theses
The opioid crisis in the United States has grown to epidemic proportions with opioid dependence among pregnant women quadrupling from 1999-2014. Opioid-dependent pregnant women are commonly given opioid maintenance therapies (e.g., buprenorphine), but the developmental and neurological effects of these drugs on offspring development are poorly understood. Our study uses a translational rodent model to characterize the developmental consequences of gestational morphine (“MS”; mimicking opioid use disorder) or buprenorphine (“BUP”; mimicking opioid maintenance therapy) exposure on exposed offspring. Female rats started BUP (1.0 mg/kg) or MS (3-6.0 mg/kg) exposure 7 days before pregnancy to represent an established user and either …
