An Effective Culturally Informed Model For Intergenerational Leadership Transfer In The Alliance Church Of Merced: A Qualitative Case Study, Thai Vang
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine an effective, culturally informed model for intergenerational leadership transfer within the Alliance Church of Merced (ACOM) in Merced, California. The project consisted of a qualitative case study of the three generations of church members in the Alliance Church of Merced to identify an effective, culturally informed model for leadership transfer within the church. The three generations were comprised of the first generation (1.0)—members who were born in Laos and came to the United States when they were teenagers; the 1.5 generation—members who were born in Laos and came to the United States …
A Horor Theory For Introspective Consciousness, Adriana Renero, Richard Brown
A Horor Theory For Introspective Consciousness, Adriana Renero, Richard Brown
Publications and Research
Higher-order theories of consciousness typically account for introspection in terms of one’s higher-order thoughts being conscious, which would require a third-order thought—i.e., a thought about a thought about a mental state. In this work, we offer an alternative account of introspection that builds on the recent Higher-Order Representation of a Representation (HOROR) theory of phenomenal consciousness. According to HOROR theory, phenomenal consciousness consists in having the right kind of higher-order representation. We claim that this theory can be extended to introspection by recognizing that there is a distinctive kind of consciousness—i.e., introspective consciousness—which can be accounted for as the theory …
La Musique Dans Les Cultures Tech. La Synthèse Modulaire En Temps De Covid-19, Eliot Bates
La Musique Dans Les Cultures Tech. La Synthèse Modulaire En Temps De Covid-19, Eliot Bates
Publications and Research
An Expert-Curated Global Database Of Online Newspaper Articles On Spiders And Spider Bites, Stefano Mammola, Laura Segura-Hernández, Et Al.
An Expert-Curated Global Database Of Online Newspaper Articles On Spiders And Spider Bites, Stefano Mammola, Laura Segura-Hernández, Et Al.
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010– 2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content—location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type of errors, consultation of experts, and a subjective assessment of sensationalism. In …

The scope of the study includes novel and notorious species within the genus, with reference to zoonotic agents Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli - the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis in the EU and Ireland, Campylobacter fetus that represents the most common campylobacter causing bacteraemia and two novel species isolated from pigs not described in the literature previously. C. jejuni and C. coli isolates (n = 350) recovered from broiler caecal and neck skin samples, …
Optimising The Carcass Merit Of Irish Beef Cattle Using Genetic And Non-Genetic Information At The Animal And Herd Level, David Kenny
Theses
Failure of beef carcasses to achieve desirable carcass specifications represent inefficiencies within the supply chain, namely greater carcass processing costs and the inability of the resulting primal cuts to conform to high-value market specifications. Analysis of a representative sample of prime Irish beef cattle conducted in this thesis determined that 59% of cattle fail to achieve the desired carcass specifications of the supply chain at slaughter. The objective of this thesis was to use readily available information to define strategies that could help to reduce this statistic. Firstly, the likelihood of Irish beef carcasses achieving the desired carcass specifications was …
Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill
Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Water voles (Arvicola amphibius), once a widespread species in Britain, became the fastest declining British mammal due to habitat fragmentation and North American mink (Neovison vison) introduction. Bude catchment (North Cornwall, England) was the location of the first water vole release project in Cornwall and has been closely monitored since the first releases in 2013. Latrines, being the most accurate field sign, were recorded twice a year, alongside burrows and feeding signs, giving an indication to the presence of voles in and around the release locations. In the Bude release catchment the presence of water voles was strongly correlated with …

Evaluation Of The Anticancer And Anti-Inflammatory Potential Of The Brown Seaweed Cystoseira, Ahmad A Farag Mansur
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Cystoseira is abundant in bioactive chemicals that have been emphasized for their pharmacological value as plentiful and typically safe alternatives, offering a viable technique for treating cancer and inflammatory diseases. However, evaluating the effect of seasonality and extraction methods on Cystoseira chemical composition and cytotoxicity activity are still not thoroughly investigated. This study investigates the effect of seasonal variations and extraction methods of the Cystoseira extracts on the chemical composition and cytotoxicity activity on human cancer cell lines. C. tamariscifolia, C. crinita and C. compressa, were collected from the UK and Libya and colourimetric techniques were used to measure the …
A Biologically Meaningful Evaluation Of Phenological Responses To Climate Change, Nicola Mansfield
A Biologically Meaningful Evaluation Of Phenological Responses To Climate Change, Nicola Mansfield
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Phenological change is widely regarded as an important biological indicator of contemporary climate change. Increasing global temperatures have been identified as driving changes in the timing of key life-cycle events across a wide range of organisms. Estimates of phenological change are often based on single measure of phenology, such as the date of the first flower to bloom or the first migrant of the season to arrive. However, this approach is unlikely to be representative of the population as a whole and ignores important information regarding, for example, the duration of the phenomenon, its temporal skew, and its shape. A …

Designing For Enchantment: The Application Of New Media Technologies For The Design Of Enchanting Museum Experiences, Liam Madden
Theses
This thesis documents and presents a number of ideas that aim to enhance the visitor experience of Nano Nagle Place (NNP). The primary aim of this project is to explore the novel application of new media technologies for the construction and creation of enchanting experiences within the context of the contemporary museum / visitor centre. Though the aim was to introduce technology into the museum space, a leading principle from the outset was to ensure any interventions resonated with the heritage of the museum. The focus of was not on the technologies used to create the interventions but rather on …
Formal Ethics Education In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students, Jennifer N. Gaylord
Formal Ethics Education In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students, Jennifer N. Gaylord
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Ethical service provision is an essential foundational skill for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and is fundamental for maintaining the integrity of the profession of speech-language pathology. While practicing speech-language pathologists are required to complete formal ethics training during each certification maintenance interval, there are no guidelines set forth as to the amount and type of training for graduate students in speech-language pathology. This quasi-experimental investigation compared the effect of ethics training embedded within a curriculum to formal ethics training on the ethics knowledge and self-reported comfort levels of first-year graduate students in speech-language pathology. Two equal, non-randomized groups of participants completed …
Georgia High School Counselor Perceptions Of Careers In The Agricultural Field, Meredith Arrington
Georgia High School Counselor Perceptions Of Careers In The Agricultural Field, Meredith Arrington
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The word “farmer” somehow still evokes that stereotypical image of an old man in overalls wearing a straw hat and holding a pitchfork. Agriculture is our nation’s largest employer, but agriculture careers still have that stigma of being backbreaking manual labor that yields a low income and is reserved for those less educated or uneducated. At the secondary education level, this type of skewed perception by school counselors can have an impact on their abilities to counsel students who are seeking college or career advice. To meet the demands of our growing population, agricultural careers have evolved to become highly …
Effects Of Cannabinoid Supplementation On Weaning And Transportation Stress In Beef Calves, Savannah Kaitlyn Austin
Effects Of Cannabinoid Supplementation On Weaning And Transportation Stress In Beef Calves, Savannah Kaitlyn Austin
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Transportation stress is a major factor increasing the risk of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in young calves. Bovine respiratory disease is currently the most economically important disease affecting the cattle industry, costing producers millions of dollars annually. Cannabidiol (CBD) has shown therapeutic benefits in other species, making it a potential tool to use as a supplement to reduce transportation and weaning stress in calves. However, little information is available on cannabinoid bioavailability and disposition of bioactive residue in livestock tissues. The objectives of these studies were to evaluate effective dosage rates of a cannabinoid gel on beef cattle and to …
Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore
Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic activities have led to degradation in streams throughout much of Western North America. In particular, cattle grazing has led to a loss of riparian vegetation resulting in higher water temperatures and an increase in nutrient runoff. The effects of degradation on food quality and quantity for aquatic consumers could have large implications for stream communities. Since omnivores feed at multiple trophic levels, they may be resilient to altered food webs, which may allow them to stabilize communities in degraded environments where resources have been reduced. To test the hypothesis that omnivores positively impact community stability in degraded conditions, I …

This essay explores the benefits and challenges of using digital editing as a platform for social knowledge production. First, I discuss the underlying impetus for the project, my choice of Scalar as a digital platform, and a number of specific assignments designed to develop skills toward the final edition. Next, I analyze examples from student work, considering the larger implications of students’ annotation choices and the thematic focus each of them chose for their acts. Finally, I outline some of the potential pitfalls of this course. My aim is to privilege students’ discovery, negotiation, and ownership of ideas. As a …
Social Media Recruitment And Online Propaganda By Extremist Groups, Megan Marie Robinson
Social Media Recruitment And Online Propaganda By Extremist Groups, Megan Marie Robinson
Honors Program Theses
As billions of people turn to their technologically elite phones and laptops for immediate information, online groups have learned how to take advantage of social media patterns and isolate people into a specific belief or carefully tailored platforms that eliminate opposing ideas. Extremist groups’ online presence have been studied as individual dilemmas, rather than being studied for patterns to combat the rapidly increasing radicalization of people who had no claim to these beliefs before social media. This study will contrast the online presence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the January 6th insurrectionists in terms of …

Mapping The Civil Justice Gap In Federal Court, Roger Michalski, Andrew Hammond
Mapping The Civil Justice Gap In Federal Court, Roger Michalski, Andrew Hammond
Faculty Articles
Unrepresented litigants make up a sizable and normatively important chunk of civil litigation in the federal courts. Despite their importance, we still know little about who these pro se litigants are. Debates about pro se litigation take place without sufficient empirical information. To help fill some of the gaps in our understanding of pro se litigants, this Article takes a new approach by mapping where pro se litigants live. Using a massive data set of 2.5 million federal dockets from a ten-year period, we obtained addresses of non-prisoner pro se litigants. We then geolocated these addresses and cross-referenced that information …

Stories That Bark For Themselves: The Fall Of A Rooster And A Princess From Pride To Repentant Humility As Depicted In The Book Of The Dun Cow And The Light Princess, Ella Harris
English Senior Capstone
Walter Wangerin Jr. and George MacDonald, authors of The Book of the Dun Cow and The Light Princess respectively, created the self-serving characters Chauntecleer the Rooster and the cursed princess. Both characters, ignorant about the subtle strength of those around them and the power of a sacrificial act against encroaching evil, are shown their own insufficiency through the sacrifice of their humble and believed-to-be inconsequential companions. Both companions, Mundo Cani Dog and the prince, willingly sacrifice their lives to conquer the evil powers that threaten lands and to save those whom they love. The actions and behaviors of all four …

Improving Neurorepair In Stroke Brain Through Endogenous Neurogenesis-Enhancing Drugs, Kuo-Jen Wu, Seongjin Yu, Jea-Young Lee, Barry Hoffer, Yun Wang
Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications
Stroke induces not only cell death but also neurorepair. De novo neurogenesis has been found in the subventricular zone of the adult mammalian brain days after stroke. Most of these newly generated cells die shortly after the insult. Recent studies have shown that pharmacological manipulation can improve the survival of endogenous neuroprogenitor cells and neural regeneration in stroke rats. As these drugs target the endogenous reparative processes that occur days after stroke, they may provide a prolonged window for stroke therapy. Here, we discuss endogenous neurogenesis-enhancing drugs and review the general status of stroke therapeutics in evaluating the field of …

The scale of the Deepwater Horizon disaster was and is unprecedented: geographic extent, pollutant amount, countermeasure scope, and of most relevance to this Research Topic issue, range of ecotypes affected. These ecotypes include coastal/nearshore, continental shelf, deep benthic, and open-ocean domains, the last of which is the subject of this synthesis. The open-ocean ecotype comprises ~90% of the volume of the Gulf of Mexico. The exact percentage of this ecotype contaminated with toxins is unknown due to its three-dimensional nature and dynamics, but estimates suggest that the footprint encompassed most of its eastern half. Further, interactions between the water column …
