Think Outside And Inside The Box:The Role Of Dual-Pathway Divergent Thinking In Creative Idea Generation, David Peterson, Marshall Pattie Jan 2022

Think Outside And Inside The Box:The Role Of Dual-Pathway Divergent Thinking In Creative Idea Generation, David Peterson, Marshall Pattie

Department of Business Management - Faculty Scholarship

The Dual Pathway to Creativity Model theorizes that creative performance arises from cognitive flexibility, persistence, or a combination of the two. Existing research has only examined these pathways independently, limiting our understanding of the model and of how people generate ideas. We extend the DPCM model by predicting that creative output arises from the generation of response sets containing both highly related (persistence pathway) and unrelated (flexibility) ideas, an idea generation strategy we call Dual Pathway Divergent Thinking (DPDT). In a study of 147 subjects, we propose a serial mediation model: people higher in Openness to Ideas use DPDT as …

The Representation Of Japanese Working Women And The Labor Standard Law Of Japan – A Feminist Postcolonial Approach, Angela Louise C. Rosario Jan 2022

The Representation Of Japanese Working Women And The Labor Standard Law Of Japan – A Feminist Postcolonial Approach, Angela Louise C. Rosario

Japanese Studies Program Faculty Publications

Since the 1947 Constitution was drafted at the behest of the Allied General Headquarters led by the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), it is only fitting to scrutinize the media directly under it. One of the policies that should have affected Japanese women’s status is the Labor Standard Law. With this Law as a reference point, this paper anchors the SCAP’s ideals for Japanese women in terms of labor whilst I look at the portrayal of Japanese women in the 1948 issues of Pacific Stars and Stripes, an unofficial military daily newspaper under the supervision of SCAP. Through …

Aac Use By Children With Asd And Their Aac Co-Pilots, Kelcy Rolak Jan 2022

Aac Use By Children With Asd And Their Aac Co-Pilots, Kelcy Rolak

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Employing a multiple case study approach, this study explored the perspectives of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on their child’s use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Deemed “AAC co-pilots” by this study, these parents play a crucial role in their children’s daily AAC use, yet their perspective is largely under-explored in existing research that otherwise explores AAC use by individuals with ASD extensively. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of children with ASD who have used AAC for at least one year and whose AAC use is documented in their IEP. Findings indicated the depth and …

The Tragedy Of Krudhog The Cruel: A Horrid Tale Best Never Told At All, Eric Ramos Jan 2022

The Tragedy Of Krudhog The Cruel: A Horrid Tale Best Never Told At All, Eric Ramos

4610 English: Individual Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien

What have I to tell you, unlucky one, of this vision brought before me? Hear it here that I, Othur Lokbrok, do not speak with a voice of my own, but rather echo the Sisters Weird, come to me one night in a passion and fury beyond all earthly resemblance. Thereupon that cursed night was I, awake and trembling, for out of a dream my spirit raised itself vigilant, as hushed voices seemed to seep and slither eerily through my window. Then in the dark at the foot of my bed a dampened candle glowed red hot as three faces, …

Reference-Free Discovery Of Nuclear Snps Permits Accurate, Sensitive Identification Of Carya (Hickory) Species And Hybrids, Robert A. Literman, Brittany M. Ott, Jun Wen, L. J. Grauke, Rachel S. Schwartz, Sara M. Handy Jan 2022

Reference-Free Discovery Of Nuclear Snps Permits Accurate, Sensitive Identification Of Carya (Hickory) Species And Hybrids, Robert A. Literman, Brittany M. Ott, Jun Wen, L. J. Grauke, Rachel S. Schwartz, Sara M. Handy

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Premise: DNA-based species identification is critical when morphological identification is restricted, but DNA-based identification pipelines typically rely on the ability to compare homologous sequence data across species. Because many clades lack robust genomic resources, we present here a bioinformatics pipeline capable of generating genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data while circumventing the need for any reference genome or annotation data. Methods: Using the SISRS bioinformatics pipeline, we generated de novo ortholog data for the genus Carya, isolating sites where genetic variation was restricted to a single Carya species (i.e., species-informative SNPs). We leveraged these SNPs to identify both full-species and hybrid …

What Machines Can Teach Us About "Confrontation", Andrea Roth Jan 2022

What Machines Can Teach Us About "Confrontation", Andrea Roth

Duquesne Law Review

In this short Article, I argue that treating non-human conveyances of information-and other forms of evidence that cannot be cross-examined-as beyond the Confrontation Clause is unsatisfactory as a matter of text, history, logic, and principle. Instead, all of these clues lead to one conclusion: the right of confrontation is a right not only to physical presence of certain human witnesses to facilitate demeanor review and questioning, but to a meaningful opportunity to scrutinize the government's proof, whatever its form.8 That right would include out-of-court discovery of critical contextual information about the evidence, whether or not exculpatory, and a …

Estimating Road Mortality Hotspots While Accounting For Imperfect Detection: A Case Study With Amphibians And Reptiles, Noah Hallisey, Scott W. Buchanan, Brian Gerber, Liam S. Corcoran, Nancy E. Karraker Jan 2022

Estimating Road Mortality Hotspots While Accounting For Imperfect Detection: A Case Study With Amphibians And Reptiles, Noah Hallisey, Scott W. Buchanan, Brian Gerber, Liam S. Corcoran, Nancy E. Karraker

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Wildlife road mortality tends to aggregate spatially at locations commonly referred to as road mortality hotspots. Predictive models can be used to identify locations appropriate for mitigation measures that reduce road mortality. However, the influence of imperfect detection (e.g., false absences) during road mortality surveys can lead to inaccurate or imprecise spatial patterns of road mortality hotspots and suboptimal implementation of mitigation measures. In this research, we used amphibians and reptiles as a case study to address imperfect detection issues when estimating the probability of road mortality hotspots using occupancy detection modeling. In addition, we determined the survey effort needed …

Rethinking Habitat Occupancy Modeling And The Role Of Diel Activity In An Anthropogenic World, Kimberly Rivera, Mason Fidino, Zach J. Farris, Seth B. Magle, Asia Murphy, Brian Gerber Jan 2022

Rethinking Habitat Occupancy Modeling And The Role Of Diel Activity In An Anthropogenic World, Kimberly Rivera, Mason Fidino, Zach J. Farris, Seth B. Magle, Asia Murphy, Brian Gerber

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Current methods to model species habitat use through space and diel time are limited. Development of such models is critical when considering rapidly changing habitats where species are forced to adapt to anthropogenic change, often by shifting their diel activity across space. We use an occupancy modeling framework to specify the multistate diel occupancy model (MSDOM), which can evaluate species diel activity against continuous response variables that may impact diel activity within and across seasons or years. We used two case studies, fosas in Madagascar and coyotes in Chicago, Illinois, to conceptualize the application of this model and to quantify …

Teaching A Hybrid Administrative Law Simulation Class Using Jurassic Park, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 2022

Teaching A Hybrid Administrative Law Simulation Class Using Jurassic Park, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

For more than a decade, educators and scholars have been calling for changes in methods of instruction, especially in higher education, based on developments in the field of learning science. This has been true for legal education as well, but additionally based on fundamental shifts in the way legal employers, especially law firms, hire and train new lawyers? These suggested changes for legal education include more emphasis on professional skills training, leadership development, and teamwork. While there has been no dearth of writing about the need for change in legal education, and even about specific outcomes or goals for legal …

Removal Of Emerging Contaminants From Wastewater Streams Using Membrane Bioreactors: A Review, Arijit Sengupta, Mahmood Jebur, Mohanad Kamaz, Sumith R. Wickramasinghe Jan 2022

Removal Of Emerging Contaminants From Wastewater Streams Using Membrane Bioreactors: A Review, Arijit Sengupta, Mahmood Jebur, Mohanad Kamaz, Sumith R. Wickramasinghe

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water is a very valuable natural resource. As the demand for water increases the presence of emerging contaminants in wastewater has become a growing concern. This is particularly true when one considers direct reuse of wastewater. Obtaining sufficient removal of emerging contaminants will require determining the level of removal for the various unit operations in the wastewater treatment process. Membrane bioreactors are attractive as they combine an activated sludge process with a membrane separation step. They are frequently used in a wastewater treatment process and can operate at higher solid loadings than conventional activated sludge processes. Determining the level of …

Comparison Of Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation On Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Il-1Β Of Male And Female Adult Mice, Manzar Rzayeva Jan 2022

Comparison Of Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation On Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Il-1Β Of Male And Female Adult Mice, Manzar Rzayeva

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Sleep plays an essential role throughout the body by affecting the physiological function and regulation of many systems. One of these systems that receives effects as a result of the adequacy of sleep is the immune system. Previous studies have demonstrated effects of sleep fragmentation upon the immune system; however, sexual differences of these effects have not been studied in depth. To analyze these variances amongst the genders, male and female adult mice were subjected to acute sleep fragmentation (SF) for 24 hours in an automated SF cage that includes a bar sweeping across the cage every two minutes. Meanwhile, …

Crossmodal Perception Of Object Shape: A Study On The Effect Of Modal Order On Successful Shape Recognition, Ashlyn Vale Jan 2022

Crossmodal Perception Of Object Shape: A Study On The Effect Of Modal Order On Successful Shape Recognition, Ashlyn Vale

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Visual and haptic (tactile) modes of perception, while occasionally exercised independently, most often occur concurrently. The degree to which the ordering of the two modes of perception affects successful recognition of three-dimensional shapes varies. Some have found that the cross-modal orders (vision followed by haptics or vice versa) produce equal performance (Caviness, 1964; Lacey, Peters, & Sathian, 2007; Norman et al., 2006), while other researchers found visual-haptic (VH) performance to be superior to haptic-visual (HV) performance (Davidson, Abbott, & Gershenfeld, 1974; Norman, Clayton, Norman, & Crabtree, 2008). The current experiment used an old-new recognition task (with cookie cutter stimuli). In …

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens Jan 2022

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Historically, popular media has functioned as a window into society’s ever evolving idea of normalcy. Children’s popular media, which contains elements of both entertainment and didacticism, is further burdened with the responsibility of influencing the perspectives of upcoming generations. This truth is particularly salient for the LGBTQ+ community, who have faced consistent misrepresentation or utter erasure from children’s media in the recent past. While there have been marked improvements in both the quality and quantity of queer representation in children’s media since 2015’s Obergefell v. Hodges case, there is still a significant need to acknowledge intersectional queerness and queer gender …

Three Waves: The United States Opioid Crisis, Ryan B. Santoro Jan 2022

Three Waves: The United States Opioid Crisis, Ryan B. Santoro

Senior Scholars Papers in Science, Technology, and Society

The past two and a half decades have witnessed widespread suffering, addiction, and death at the hands of the opioid crisis. This paper analyzes the crisis through a series of time periods, broken down into “waves.” Drawing upon primary material in relation to OxyContin advertisements in the 1990’s, this research takes aim at the origin of widespread opioid abuse disorder. By building upon analysis done on the Sackler Family, Purdue Pharma, heroin abuse, fentanyl overdoses, the COVID-19 pandemic and opioids and addiction in modern pop culture, this thesis shows how despite constant change in public policy, the opioid crisis continues …

What Is "Speedrunning?" Industry, Community, Identity, Riley Scott Kelfer Jan 2022

What Is "Speedrunning?" Industry, Community, Identity, Riley Scott Kelfer

Senior Scholar Papers

What drives interaction in online contexts? How do “internet communities” form, and how do they generate a sense of interpersonal closeness? I address such questions through a cultural analysis of video game “speedrunning,” an emergent online community that some commentators have noted for its remarkable commitment to compassion and mutual advancement. While several game scholars have explored the narrative and temporal implications of the live-streamed and recorded speedrun, few have directed their attention to the ways in which video game speedrunning, as a community of dedicated practitioners and spectators, is informed by historical precedents and contemporary social processes. I place …

Soil Project, Gabriella Hopkins Jan 2022

Soil Project, Gabriella Hopkins

Natural Sciences Student Research Presentations

What are soil-borne diseases?

- Soil-borne diseases are diseases that can infect plants, animals, and human via soil.

- There are multiple different pathogens that contaminate soil and cause disease including bacteria, fungi, and helminths (parasitic worms). Most of these lay dormant (inactive) in the soil until they come in contact with a host.

- A host such as an animal can become infected by inhaling dormant spores or eggs in the case of helminths or by the pathogen coming in contact with an open wound. These situations are also the case for humans, but humans can also become infected …

It was to accompany pan-seared sea scallops in a vinagreta of grape seed oil, vinagre de Jerez, chervil, chives and parsley from our garden. The previous bottle had been the best pairing to date. But, the taste of the wine became everything. This fifth and last 2005 from my cellar was unique, similar to neither any of its siblings nor to any other wine. It was expected to be close to one a year earlier. R. Lopez de Heredia wines are not released until ready for drinking; this one had …

Art/Work: Labor, Identity, And Society, Zirui Feng, Elinor G. Gass, Ran Li, Lauren C. Mcveigh, Matthew S. Montes, Lin Zhu, Yan Sun

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Artists, perhaps to emphasize their own dedication to the intellectual and manual skills required for making art, have long been drawn to the theme of labor, both in their depictions of workers and scenes of making. In the late seventeenth century, Dutch paintings frequently portrayed earnest and diligent artisans performing trades at shops or on the streets. Later, rapid economic, social and political changes throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century led to a more radical approach to realist representations of labor. This exhibition ART/WORK: Labor, Identity, and Society considers these art-historical precedents to explore the issues of labor in art. …

Updated Perspectives On The Role Of Biomechanics In Copd: Considerations For The Clinician, Jennifer M. Yentes, Wai-Yan Liu, Kuan Zhang, Eric Markvicka, Stephen I. Rennard

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) demonstrate extra-pulmonary functional decline such as an increased prevalence of falls. Biomechanics offers insight into functional decline by examining mechanics of abnormal movement patterns. This review discusses biomechanics of functional outcomes, muscle mechanics, and breathing mechanics in patients with COPD as well as future directions and clinical perspectives. Patients with COPD demonstrate changes in their postural sway during quiet standing compared to controls, and these deficits are exacerbated when sensory information (eg, eyes closed) is manipulated. If standing balance is disrupted with a perturbation, patients with COPD are slower to return to baseline …
