Virtual Resources, Ada, And Web Accessibility Compliance: Is There Help? Yes!, Justin Easterday Jan 2022

Virtual Resources, Ada, And Web Accessibility Compliance: Is There Help? Yes!, Justin Easterday

University Libraries Workshops and Presentations

As libraries continue to expand their virtual resources, they are given the task of compliance with the American Disabilities Act as well as following the web accessibility standards listed in the Revised 508 Compliance or the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Standards. One difficult part of working with the web accessibility standards is determining how to correctly update our resources to meet both these standards and also provide instruction. Each library will need to determine its answer, along with determining its library-wide expectations. I will present what current research has shown to be the most effective instructional approach for …

Grendel’S Mother: Defying The Feminine Gender Norms, Haley Beasley Jan 2022

Grendel’S Mother: Defying The Feminine Gender Norms, Haley Beasley

Race, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium

When Beowulf was composed, the gender norms of the masculine and feminine were strict and unmoving. The poem, written down between 900 and 1100, defies these by introducing the reader to Grendel's mother, a character who equates the feminine with the monstrous while simultaneously treading normatively masculine waters. This essay looks at the fight between Beowulf and Grendel's mother in her hall and how it illustrates Grendel's mother's shift along the gender scale in order to avenge her son's death and protect her home. This assertion of power by an attempt to strip Beowulf of his manhood summarizes his, and …

Harmful Algal Blooms In Caesar Creek Lake And Their Relationship To Riparian Cover, Morgan C. Grunden Jan 2022

Harmful Algal Blooms In Caesar Creek Lake And Their Relationship To Riparian Cover, Morgan C. Grunden

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Caesar Creek Lake (CCL) in Warren County, OH has recently been experiencing harmful algal blooms (HABs) which are most likely attributed to an excess of phosphorus (P) from fertilizers and manures applied to surrounding fields. Sediments act as a sink for P later supplying a source of P in lakes for HABs when waters become thermally stratified and anoxic. This study seeks to determine the relationship between HABs in CCL and riparian cover at the main tributaries, Anderson Fork and Caesar Creek. In order to do this, sediment samples were collected from four sample sites along Anderson Fork and three …

Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven Jan 2022

Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven

Zambia Social Science Journal

Hugo Hinfelaar described, for precolonial times, a comprehensive domestic religion and family spirituality which he called “traditional dogma” or “family dogma”. What is left of it in Zambia? When and for what purposes are traditional religious beliefs invoked today and scrutinised in marriage and the domestic sphere? While many say, “We have no culture left!” traditional dogma continues to function as a “moral grammar” that anchors cultural identity. The marital life of a couple becomes scrutinised along traditional beliefs during family crises. When people accept this scrutiny, they (re-)submit themselves under the wider family and thereby reconstitute the family under …

Seasonal Stem Loss And Self-Thinning In Low Marsh Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Tidal Marsh, Clara Chaisson, Chad C. Jones, R. Scott Warren Jan 2022

Seasonal Stem Loss And Self-Thinning In Low Marsh Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Tidal Marsh, Clara Chaisson, Chad C. Jones, R. Scott Warren

Botany Faculty Publications

Dense monocultures of the grass Spartina alterniflora dominate the low marsh in typical New England tidal marshes. These marshes provide a number of important ecosystem services; thus, it is important to understand the factors that influence S. alterniflora productivity. End of season live biomass is often used to estimate S. alterniflora productivity, but this measure fails to account for stems lost within the growing season and may lead to a significant underestimate. We explored two possible factors that may influence S. alterniflora stem loss within the growing season: 1) density-dependent mortality (self-thinning), and 2) the physical force of moving water …

The Chemical Characterization Of Microplastic Polymer Composition From Various Littoral Environments On Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Leah Kosovsky Jan 2022

The Chemical Characterization Of Microplastic Polymer Composition From Various Littoral Environments On Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Leah Kosovsky

Chemistry Honors Papers

The increasing abundance of microplastic pollution in marine environments is a rising concern, and it has the potential to negatively affect the health and sustainability of marine organisms and ecosystems. Microplastics can harm organisms through a variety of chemical, biological, and physical mechanisms. The extent to which they are harmful varies greatly and is significantly dependent on the chemical and physical makeup of the plastic polymer. Due to this variability, it is important to characterize microplastic samples in various environments to better understand the risks associated with the debris in certain areas. Through field research, a spatial analysis of the …

M&Ms: Mentors And Mentees, Melody B. Johnson Jan 2022

M&Ms: Mentors And Mentees, Melody B. Johnson

Education Projects

This project focused on the challenge of meeting the needs of at-risk students in an elementary school setting. In response to the literature, we designed and implemented a school-based mentoring program. This project examined whether a face-to-face mentoring program in this school with these students could meet three goals: provide students regular contact with a caring adult, increase student confidence in themselves or their environments, and reduce behavior infractions. These students, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, were identified for social-emotional and/or behavior issues by their teachers, administration, or guidance counselor. School employees served as the pool for mentors, and …
