At last, the cloud was ginormous and black, covering all the animals. It burst in a huge downpour of raindrops. The animals started splashing and singing, their gloom washing away with the rain.

The researchers, who support Emotional Intelligence, argue that it is important to be emotionally intelligent because it has direct impact in both personal as well as professional life. However, researchers who do not support it have criticised it in terms of its role, scientific validity and validity of the measurement scales. The paper, based on review of literature, throws light on arguments, both for and against Emotional Intelligence, its importance in organizations like job performance, job …

Celebrating Wetland Foodways: Joining Ecosystems & Cultures On The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Deborah La Rue Apr 2022

Celebrating Wetland Foodways: Joining Ecosystems & Cultures On The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Deborah La Rue

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal Louisiana is bountiful in cultural and ecological diversity. Spotted with thriving estuaries, meandering bayous and swamps, and rippling grasses of coastal marshes, these wetland ecosystems sequester carbon, purify floodwaters, and buffer against storm surge. Historically, southern wetland landscapes have offered refuge to people of many folk and ethnic traditions escaping violence and oppression. Until the mid-twentieth century, the people living in present-day Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes enjoyed relative isolation from the rest of America, constructing cultural practices that emphasized attachment to wetland plants, animals, and ecosystem dynamics.

Today, changing environmental conditions and high rates of relative sea level rise …

Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz Apr 2022

Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition with no known cure. Intermittent fasting involves limiting caloric intake to designated time periods and decreases markers of systemic inflammation, but the clinical efficacy of intermittent fasting for patients with psoriasis remains unclear. We propose a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the clinical impact of adjunctive intermittent fasting on plaque psoriasis. Patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis will be managed with topical calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate cream and randomized to either practice daily intermittent fasting with an 8-hour eating window or practice a diet without time restriction. We hypothesize that patients engaging …

Exploring Shellfish Harvesting Accessibility In Maine's Municipal Shellfish Ordinance Laws, Charles Van Damme, Megan Lacey, Findley Mclain, Sophia Hoag Apr 2022

Exploring Shellfish Harvesting Accessibility In Maine's Municipal Shellfish Ordinance Laws, Charles Van Damme, Megan Lacey, Findley Mclain, Sophia Hoag

Community Engaged Research Reports

In light of climate change, coastal gentrification, localism, and discrepancies in shellfish regulatory structures, access to coastal shellfish harvesting areas has become increasingly complex for tribal communities throughout Maine. This report is a comprehensive analysis of municipal shellfish regulatory structures and their impact on limiting clam-harvesting access for indigneous peoples in coastal Maine. Our work is in tandem with Manomet and the Maine Shellfish Learning Network (MSLN) with the aim of accumulating historical and contemporary knowledge of regulations that govern access to coastal resources, with the understanding to apply that knowledge to help promote a more inclusive framework for coastal …

Chromatin Architecture: Mechanisms Of Gene Regulation, Logan O'Donnell Apr 2022

Chromatin Architecture: Mechanisms Of Gene Regulation, Logan O'Donnell

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

The rapid growth and division of cells as they proliferate and penetrate to surrounding tissues defines the collection of disease states known as cancer. Abnormal gene expression drives this uncontrollable replication of cells. In recent studies, aberrant HOX gene expression has been noted in a multitude of cancer types such as myeloid leukemia, prostate cancer, and breast cancer [1]. Within cancerous cells with aberrant HOX expression, late expressing HOX genes are suppressed while early expressing HOX genes are reactivated. HOX genes are significant in controlling early phases of organismal development such as cell cycle, cell movement, and gene expression. Likewise, …

Dogs Produce Distinctive Play Pants: Confirming Simonet, Shelly Volsche, Cameron Brown, Hannah Gunnip, Makayla Kiperash, Holly Root-Gutteridge, Alexandra Horowitz

2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Vocalizations in expressive, nonhuman animals can explain the evolution of human communication. A domain-specific play pant in dogs can signify a comparison to human laughter and can explain the development of interspecies empathy through social contagion. A prescreening survey captured demographic information about the guardian and the dog. Accepted pairs wore wireless microphones, transmitters, and a harness, while a camera captured video. Independent raters analyzed audio and video recordings across training, play and shared rest interactions via an ethogram and RavenLite. There is evidence that dogs produce a play pant. When interacting with their guardians, dogs produced more vocalizations during …

Humane Education Curriculum Encourages Concern In Animal Wellbeing And Increases Public Engagement With Local Shelters, Hannah Hedelius

2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase

The Idaho Humane Society previously had a Junior Vet Tech camp for 5thand 6thgrade students, however it lacked discussion in animal behavior and body language, important topics in keeping animals and humans safe. We proposed a 2-hour workshop that includes discussion on body language, Fear Free© handling techniques, observations of animals in shelter, and opportunities to practice skills taught during the workshop. Dependent on the success of this workshop, we are prepared to design and launch a series of career related themes in collaboration with the Idaho Humane Society.

Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel Apr 2022

Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

An emerging body of literature has documented the positive influence of exercise on student achievement. Human and non-human animal studies have proven that exercise can improve memory, academic stressors, social anxiety, and sleep along with more broad topics such as mental and physical health. With exercise improving memory and academic stressors, this leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could benefit student’s grade point average which will be tested in this study. Exercise is also exhibited to help reduce social anxiety which leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could improve one’s involvement in extracurricular activities because one would have …
