A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Laser Sintering Process And Subsequent Mechanical Properties Of Γ-Tial Nanoparticles, Eleanor Dickens Apr 2022

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Laser Sintering Process And Subsequent Mechanical Properties Of Γ-Tial Nanoparticles, Eleanor Dickens

Honors Theses

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the laser sintering additive manufacturing process is investigated through the observation of γ-TiAl nanoparticles. This process is conducted using both uni-directional chain and stacking configurations. By mimicking the heating process and varying laser sintering parameters such as heating rater, sintering temperature, and particle orientation, the fusion behavior and resulting products are analyzed for both chain and stacking NP patterns. In of single chain cases, it is noticed that slower heating rates and higher melting temperatures yield larger neck growth between each individual particle and thus produce a more stable product. This leads to stronger mechanical …

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We explored the ability of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) from different bacteria to use glucosamine (GlcN) metabolites as a substrate or allosteric effectors. The enzyme from the actinobacteria Kocuria rhizophila exhibited marked and distinctive sensitivity to allosteric activation by GlcN-6P when producing ADP-Glc from glucose-1-phosphate (Glc-1P) and ATP. This behavior is also seen in the enzyme from Rhodococcus spp., the only one known so far to portray this activation. GlcN-6P had a more modest effect on the enzyme from other Actinobacteria (Streptomyces coelicolor), Firmicutes (Ruminococcus albus), and Proteobacteria (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) groups. In addition, we …

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Arbitrators Under The Federal Arbitration Act?, Dimitrios Ioannidis Apr 2022

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Arbitrators Under The Federal Arbitration Act?, Dimitrios Ioannidis

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Can parties appoint an Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) platform to serve as an arbitrator under the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”)? Can a United States court invalidate an arbitration provision in a contract that specifies the resolution of a dispute through an AI platform? Can a U.S. court refuse to recognize an arbitral award that was rendered by an AI platform? Intense lobbying efforts by business organizations led to the enactment of the FAA in 1925. While the business community lobbied for lower-cost litigation, the lawyer organizations, including the American Bar Association, were bystanders in the drafting of the legislative proposals. Nearly …

Honors Projects

This Honors Project was created as a culmination of research conducted in the fields of Speech-Language Pathology and English. It is a written and illustrated children’s book intended to be used during shared book reading between an adult and a child of preschool age who presents with a language delay or language disorder. Cloze structures are used throughout the book to elicit strategically selected vocabulary words from the child and aid in their vocabulary development. Elements and techniques used in children’s literature were also implemented throughout this book. This book is overall designed a therapy tool that can be used …

Promoting Healthy Eating In Latin American Restaurants: A Qualitative Survey Of Views Held By Owners And Staff, Fuster, Melissa, Rosa Abreu, Margaret A. Handley, Donald Rose, Michelle A. Rodriguez, Emily G. Dimond, Brian Elbel, Terry T. K. Huang Apr 2022

Promoting Healthy Eating In Latin American Restaurants: A Qualitative Survey Of Views Held By Owners And Staff, Fuster, Melissa, Rosa Abreu, Margaret A. Handley, Donald Rose, Michelle A. Rodriguez, Emily G. Dimond, Brian Elbel, Terry T. K. Huang

Publications and Research

Background

Restaurants, particularly independently-owned ones that serve immigrant communities, are important community institutions in the promotion of dietary health. Yet, these restaurants remain under-researched, preventing meaningful collaborations with the public health sector for healthier community food environments. This research aimed to examine levels of acceptability of healthy eating promotion strategies (HEPS) in independently-owned Latin American restaurants (LARs) and identify resource needs for implementing HEPS in LARs.

Methods

We completed semi-structured, online discussions with LAR owners and staff (n = 20), predominantly from New York City (NYC), to examine current engagement, acceptability, potential barriers, and resource needs for the implementation …

To Stick Or Not To Stick: The Multiple Roles Of Cell Adhesion Molecules In Neural Circuit Assembly, Trevor Moreland, Fabienne E. Poulain Apr 2022

To Stick Or Not To Stick: The Multiple Roles Of Cell Adhesion Molecules In Neural Circuit Assembly, Trevor Moreland, Fabienne E. Poulain

Faculty Publications

Precise wiring of neural circuits is essential for brain connectivity and function. During development, axons respond to diverse cues present in the extracellular matrix or at the surface of other cells to navigate to specific targets, where they establish precise connections with post-synaptic partners. Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) represent a large group of structurally diverse proteins well known to mediate adhesion for neural circuit assembly. Through their adhesive properties, CAMs act as major regulators of axon navigation, fasciculation, and synapse formation. While the adhesive functions of CAMs have been known for decades, more recent studies have unraveled essential, non-adhesive functions …

School of Medicine Publications

Influential theories implicate variations in the mechanisms supporting threat learning in the severity of anxiety symptoms. We use computational models of associative learning in conjunction with structural imaging to explicate links among the mechanisms underlying threat learning, their neuroanatomical substrates, and anxiety severity in humans. We recorded skin-conductance data during a threat-learning task from individuals with and without anxiety disorders (N=251; 8-50 years; 116 females). Reinforcement-learning model variants quantified processes hypothesized to relate to anxiety: threat conditioning, threat generalization, safety learning, and threat extinction. We identified the best-fitting models for these processes and tested associations among latent learning parameters, whole-brain …

Leaning On The Everlasting Arms: Virgil Darnell Hawkins's Early Life And Entry Into The Civil Rights Struggle, Larry O. Rivers

Florida Historical Quarterly

By 1987, Florida civil rights hero Virgil Hawkins's earthly journey neared its end. At 80 years of age, the sunset of his life had given him many signs that relief and rest lay just on the horizon: grayer hair, slower reflexes, sharper aches, and ailing health. But still, even in these waning years, peace eluded him. The painful, ongoing irony and contradiction in his life appeared as clear as the black-haired, white female newspaper reporter sitting in his living room, carefully scratching out notes as he shared a story that he had repeated so many times.1

Haven't Quite Shaken The Horror: Howard Kester, The Lynching Of Claude Neal, And Social Activism In The South During The 1930s, Joshua Youngblood

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the night of October 26, 1934, outside the small town of Greenwood, Florida, Claude Neal was lynched. The twenty-three-year-old African-American farm-wage laborer was accused of the murder of Lola Cannidy, a twenty-year-old white woman Neal had known nearly his entire life. The lynching of Claude Neal sparked a furor among liberal activists around the nation and provided an opportunity for a radical critique of the South. Socialist Howard Kester conducted the most significant contemporary investigation of the lynching. An outspoken opponent of segregation, Kester vigorously supported the economically depressed and exploited throughout the South, from striking coal miners to …

Fish On: Pensacola's Red Snapper Fishery, Jason T. Paupp Apr 2022

Fish On: Pensacola's Red Snapper Fishery, Jason T. Paupp

Florida Historical Quarterly

In an article he wrote in 1942 for The American Neptune Fred Hunt remembered fishing the Campeche Bank of the northern coast of the Yucatan in the "late 'teens" when the Pensacola red snapper fleet was "the only big American deep-sea fishing fleet using all-sail vessels exclusively." Though he admitted the fleet was perhaps not as picturesque as it seemed to him at his "meeting salt water for the first time," the Alabama native penned a colorful tale of the men who plied the waters of the Gulf and drank away their pay in the bars and saloons of Pensacola. …

The Women Of The Early Florida Audubon Society: Agents Of History In The Fight To Save State Birds, Leslie Kemp Poole

Florida Historical Quarterly

Reflecting back on the first 25 years of the Florida Audubon Society, President Hiram Byrd described its early founders "a little group of people who had a vision for the future." In particular, Byrd noted that Clara Dommerich, at whose home the first meeting was held in 1900, was "probably the leading spirit in the movement, but as so frequently happens in this world of affairs, the hand that presses the button is not seen."1

The Ruthless Hand Of War: Andrew A. Humphreys In The Second Seminole War, Matthew T. Pearcy

Florida Historical Quarterly

In late February 1836, 2d Lt. Andrew A. Humphreys (1810-1883) reported for duty at Fort Drane in the remote interior of the Florida peninsula. Green and untried, the young West Pointer chronicled his first experiences at war in a leather bound journal tucked away among his personal possessions. "I delight in extremes," he wrote in its opening pages, "and certainly my profession leads to them - from the center of civilization to the wildest forests, I am transferred in a few days. In January luxuriating in the delights of our capital, in February suffering from hunger, thirst and fatigue in …

This Seems To Be Our Darkest Times: The Florida Brigade In Mississippi, June-July 1863, Jonathan C. Sheppard

Florida Historical Quarterly

In June 1860, as the United States advanced toward the secession crisis, headmaster Samuel Pasco watched his Waukeenah Academy students exhibit the knowledge they had acquired over the past term to a crowd of proud parents and friends. During the program, the boys demonstrated their proficiency in subjects such as geography, spelling and reading, chemistry, grammar, arithmetic, and translation of Latin.1 Following the formal examinations, the students acted and sang various orations and songs for their guests.

Composing Together: The Development Of Musical Ideas With Students And Teachers, Tessandra Wendzich, Bernard W. Andrews University Of Ottowa

Visions of Research in Music Education

Contemporary Canadian pieces are performed and studied infrequently in school music programs due to their complex nature. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Canadian Music Centre commissioned 18 composers to compose a piece of educational music during a multi-year, multi-site research project entitled Making Music: Composing with Young Musicians. The musical pieces were written in collaboration with teachers and students. The following research question was addressed: How can musical ideas be conceptualized and developed with students and teachers? In their composition reports, the composers emphasized the importance of listening to students. Listening helped the composers understand the types of …

Country Of Origin Effects On Brand Image And Social Status In An Emerging Market, Amit Gautam Apr 2022

Country Of Origin Effects On Brand Image And Social Status In An Emerging Market, Amit Gautam

Management Dynamics

Research suggests that country of origin (COO) information serves as a cue from which consumers make influences about product and product attributes. The COO cue triggers a global evaluation of quality, performance or specific product attributes. Consumers inter attributes to the product based on country stereotype and experiences with products from that country. As consumer demand for products in developed countries is reaching the saturation point, companies are looking for new consumers with a strong purchasing power elsewhere. Clearly, through undertaking consumers' differences, companies can better position their product in the marketplace. Hence this research will look at COO effects …

Aesthetic Preference For Nonredundant Complexity: Key To Creativity, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Aesthetic Preference For Nonredundant Complexity: Key To Creativity, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

The basic principle of all biological and social, and some physical processes is increase of interactive heterogeneity, which evolutionarily raises the sophistication level of intraspecific and interspecific systems. Primates, including humans, and other species of animals such as elephants, are known to create multicolor pictorial patterns on a canvas, holding a painting brush in a hand, or in the case of elephants, wrapping the long "nose" around a painting brush. Therefore the pattern creation has a long evolutionary history. Humans and monkeys branched off 6 or 7 million years ago. Humans and elephants much earlier. Another important consideration is the …

New Dimensions In Business Communication: Unconscious Layers, Strategic Judo, And Camouflaged Reversal, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

(1) Individuals differ in: (a) cognitive/cogitative types; (b) modal types: (c) degree of awareness of unconscious layers of thought process; (d) utilization of strategic judo and camouflaged reversal. (2) Cognitive/cogitative types should not be confused with skill types, aptitude types, emotional types, or personality types. (3) Individual differences in cognitive/cogitative types are mostly phenotypically innate. Therefore the assumption that you should be able to make everybody understand you is incorrect. (4) Communicational modal types are: factual mode, contextual mode, pictorial mode, insinuative mode, deceptive mode, etc. (5) Unconscious layers include self-deception, repression of one's own perception, inability to distinguish whether …

Single Index Model: An Implication On Bankex Stocks, Tarun Gupta, Nishant Sinha

Management Dynamics

The objective of the study is to find out whether the Bankex stocks (17 bank stocks) are undervalued or overvalued with respect to the current Sensex high levels using Single Index Model. It also aims at finding out the future expectations from these stocks. In the financial economics literature, it is generally assumed that risk-averse investors expect higher returns for investing in relatively riskier assets and therefore, the risk premium represents the compensation to the investor for assuming risk. The non-zero risk premiums are not only directly unobservable but also vary substantially over time. Apart from the 'animal spirits' driving …
