Consumer Culture, Material Desires, And Images Of Women In American Novels And Art At The Turn Of The 20th Century., Janna S. Tajibaeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines American consumer culture and its influences on images of women created in art and literature at the turn of the twentieth century. It is divided into four substantive parts and uses the methods and theoretical approaches from four separate disciplines: social history, social theory, literature and art. The study offers a cultural discourse of the period by analyzing the novels of Edith Wharton The House of Mirth, and The Custom of the Country, and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie, and also looking into the paintings of American Impressionists and Realists. It interprets the fictional and visual portrayals of …

We Can Do It! (But Should We?), Lindsey Odom

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

First dates represent an important early event in the development of dating relationships. Commonly, date initiation is a behavior in which men take control. In the past few decades, however, more women attempted this task. Women initiating dates is a deviation from cultural norms or what society views as appropriate behavior. The deviation in behavior could have negative repercussions for women. For this study, perceptions of women who initiate dates are investigated. By examining the expectedness and violation valence of the behavior through Expectancy Violations Theory, insight is provided into the perceptions of this dating trend.

Can't Be Tamed: A Feminist Analysis Of Apocrypha And Other Scripture, Catherine Alison Ballard Apr 2012

Can't Be Tamed: A Feminist Analysis Of Apocrypha And Other Scripture, Catherine Alison Ballard

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper is my own unique feminist analysis of certain apocryphal texts. Though the texts I use have common themes, they are divided into what I consider the three most societally important aspects of an ancient woman’s identity: virgin, mother, and whore. The Acts of Thecla and The Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena deal with virginity. II Maccabees, The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas, and select chapters of Augustine’s Confessions represent motherhood. Finally, the hagiographies Life of Pelagia and Life of Mary navigate through the mire of sexualities that deviate from norms.

Die Frauen, Der Strafvollzug, Und Der Staat: Incarceration And Ideology In Post-Wwii Germany, Andrea Moody Kozak Apr 2012

Die Frauen, Der Strafvollzug, Und Der Staat: Incarceration And Ideology In Post-Wwii Germany, Andrea Moody Kozak

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explores how the material reality of Germany's women's prisons has been largely determined by their ideological foundations, and by the historical developments that have produced these ideologies. The German women's prison system is complex and imperfect, yet in many ways very progressive. It is the result of the last sixty years of tumultuous German history, and has been uniquely shaped by the capitalist and communist histories of the once-divided state. In its current state, it seems to have incorporated elements of a supposedly “rational” or individualistic conception of humanity as well as one that is relational and interdependent, …

Natural Hair: A Content Analysis Of Black Hair Style And Texture On Youtube Videos, Toni Dominique Rowell Apr 2012

Natural Hair: A Content Analysis Of Black Hair Style And Texture On Youtube Videos, Toni Dominique Rowell

Theses

Within a society, the dominant ideology about aesthetics is instilled in individuals at a very early age. Hegemonic standards concerning the subject of hair style and texture has been an ongoing debate in the Black community for decades. A content analysis of videos on the video-sharing website YouTube was conducted to examine perceptions on African American women’s hair style, the relationship between the perceptions on hair style and gender, and the function of African American women’s’ hair styles as a status symbol. The sample consisted of 150 YouTube videos generated by using the keywords, “hair and Black women.” Three research …

Southern Graces: Women, Faith, And The Quest For Social Justice, Memphis, Tennessee, 1950-1969, Doris Ann Youngblood Mulhearn Apr 2012

Southern Graces: Women, Faith, And The Quest For Social Justice, Memphis, Tennessee, 1950-1969, Doris Ann Youngblood Mulhearn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Memphis,Tennessee was thrust into the national civil rights movement after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The city, however, has a much more complex connection with civil rights activity than the traditional narratives imply. As early as 1950, both black and white Memphians attempted to address the social inequities of Jim Crow. Many of these early social justice activists were women. Although the assumption is that the women would be Protestant because of the historical association of African Americans with Protestant denominations as well as the lack of a significant Catholic population inTennessee, there was a …

The Report Of The Military Leadership Diversity Commission: An Inadequate Basis For Lifting The Exclusion Of Women From Direct Ground Combat, Kingsley R. Browne Apr 2012

The Report Of The Military Leadership Diversity Commission: An Inadequate Basis For Lifting The Exclusion Of Women From Direct Ground Combat, Kingsley R. Browne

Law Faculty Research Publications

The recommendation of the Military Leadership Diversity Commission to lift the exclusion of women from ground combat is deeply irresponsible and cannot be taken seriously. The CommissionÕs lodestar was diversity, not military effectiveness, and it failed to take into consideration a wealth of information bearing on its recommendation. The CommissionÕs recommendation was based primarily on sources that cannot be considered authoritative, and the CommissionÕs analysis of the sources that it did consult was superficial and in conflict with some of the facts, as opposed to the Òspin,Ó contained in these very sources. The Commission substantially downplayed the sex difference in …

Gender And The Boundaries Of National Identity: U.S. Women As A Citizen Class In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani Apr 2012

Gender And The Boundaries Of National Identity: U.S. Women As A Citizen Class In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani

Masters Theses

This text analyzes the public ideologies and institutions that underpinned women's unequal status within the national collective of United States citizens during the long 1960s, paying particular attention to the executive office of Lyndon Johnson, Congress, and the national security establishment. Women were frequently framed within these institutions as a separate special class of citizen, with rights and responsibilities not akin to those of the elite—male bodied—members of the national collective. Allowing for the imaginative construction of "women" as a subject class in U.S. society, this text argues that even with the guarantee of formal political rights in place, women …

Then, the connections between the economy of sex trafficking and the legislation of sex trafficking will be analyzed in order to determine the best way for …

Gender And The Future Of Genocide Studies And Prevention, Elisa Von Joeden-Forgery Apr 2012

Gender And The Future Of Genocide Studies And Prevention, Elisa Von Joeden-Forgery

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article addresses the implications of recent gender research for the definition of the crime of genocide and our understanding of it as an historical process. It proposes that gendered violence is a central defining component of the crime. Going beyond a discussion of rape and sexual violence, it argues that a gendered understanding of atrocity in general offers important tools for an early warning system that should be incorporated into the research methodology and reporting strategies of the United Nations, the International Criminal Court (ICC), human rights organizations, and government agencies and intelligence services. Briefly examining the cases of …

Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba Mar 2012

Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Since the inception of cinema, women have been portrayed with the typical identities of emotionally and physically weak characters; this portrayal led to their subsequent dependence on men. Men were usually the protagonists and/or the heroes, following their archetypal journey. Thus, women's position in early cinema was to exemplify what men were not, placing the former in the diminutive position of the Other. One may conclude that men were often defined by what women lacked, and the women were defined by their relationships with these heroic men. As time progressed in the history of cinema, women's images retained part …

Perspectives On Women’S Development: Instructional Implications In Higher Education, Sonia Michael Mar 2012

Perspectives On Women’S Development: Instructional Implications In Higher Education, Sonia Michael

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Theories of development typically explain developmental progress as a linear process with individuals moving through stages of development and becoming more independent and autonomous with each stage. While there are several theories of development, all of them suggest that there are gender differences in the way individuals develop. Perspectives on women’s development have become more prevalent with the growing awareness related to gender equity issues in education and the workplace. These theories of development suggest that women have a need to feel connected and that they tend to define themselves in terms of their relationships with others. With women over …

Understanding The Value Of Education: A Critical Component Of A Major Social Change Effort, Susan R. Madsen, Cheryl Hanewicz, Nicolle M. Johnson, Jessica Burnham

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Receiving the benefits of postsecondary education is important to nations throughout the world. A more educated citizenry results in, among other things, less crime and poverty, increased physical and mental health of individuals, and greater economic growth (e.g., American Human Development Project, 2009; Pascarella, & Terenzini, 2005). These benefits are felt at all levels of society (i.e., individual, community, and national) and essentially define the social and economic structure of a nation. According to a Lumina Foundation (2009) report “college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or postindustrial country in the world, except the U.S.” (p.1). The graduation rate …

The current study aims to explore African women’s experiences of violence during conflict. The research was undertaken in 2009 in part fulfillment for a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. Previous research on women refugees’ experiences has focused on the negative impact on psychological functioning despite indications that they show great strength and resilience. Using qualitative methods the study sought to identify the impact of violence on mental health as well as develop a greater understanding of the roles of resilience, coping and identity. Women from Somalia and Zimbabwe who attended a refugee centre in the UK were interviewed; analysis of …

Epidemiology And Management Of Depression Following Coronary Heart Disease Diagnosis In Women, Siqin Ye, Ellen-Ge Denton, Lauren T. Wasson, Karina W. Davidson Feb 2012

Epidemiology And Management Of Depression Following Coronary Heart Disease Diagnosis In Women, Siqin Ye, Ellen-Ge Denton, Lauren T. Wasson, Karina W. Davidson

Publications and Research

Coronary heart disease (CHD) and depression are both highly prevalent in women. Importantly, depression is associated with significantly elevated morbidity and mortality in women with CHD. There are intriguing speculations about biological mechanisms underlying this association, such as endothelial dysfunction, subclinical atherosclerosis, inflammation, and autonomic dysregulation. Social and behavioral mechanisms, such as lack of social support and physical inactivity, have also been shown to play important roles. Unfortunately, many randomized clinical trials of counseling and pharmacologic interventions for depression in patients with CHD have failed to improve cardiovascular outcomes, and in fact have raised the possibility that interventions might be …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although studies demonstrate that dietary interventions for healthy adults can result in beneficial dietary changes, few studies examine when and how people change in response to these interventions, particularly in rural populations. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of change over time in healthy eating behaviors in midlife and older women in response to a one-year health-promoting intervention, and to examine what predictors (perceived benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, and family support for healthy eating) influence the changes during the intervention and follow-up. Data for this secondary analysis were from the Wellness for Women community-based trial. Women (N …

Gender Differences In Reasons For Alcohol And Drug Abuse Among Youth In Kenya: Programs For Prevention, Faith Wanjiru Kimunya Feb 2012

Gender Differences In Reasons For Alcohol And Drug Abuse Among Youth In Kenya: Programs For Prevention, Faith Wanjiru Kimunya

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the research on alcohol and drug abuse prevention examines general risk and protective factors without considering gender and is conducted primarily in Western cultural contexts. However, gender and culture are important to consider in the design and implementation of alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs because both gender and culture can play a role in the development of risk and protective factors. In order to assess the role that gender and culture might play in alcohol and drug abuse, a literature review was conducted. The literature review focused on the gender differences in reasons for alcohol and drug …

The Somatization Of Depression In Native Pakistani Women, Rubeena H. Mian M.D., Linda S. Grossman Ph.D. Jan 2012

The Somatization Of Depression In Native Pakistani Women, Rubeena H. Mian M.D., Linda S. Grossman Ph.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Previous studies have pointed out the comorbidity of somatization and depression among non-Western psychiatric patients. We studied the somatization of depression in Pakistani women. Two groups were studies: inpatients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of major depression and a comparison sample of women living in the community without psychiatric diagnoses. Both groups were administered a rating scale for somatization. Results indicated that patients reported significantly more somatic symptoms than nonpatients. These findings support the concept that somatization may be a cultural mode of mental distress among Pakistani women, as has been observed for other non-Western populations.

The Woman's Self: A Multigenerational And Transcultural View Of Lifespan Development Of Women, Carol M. Wiggs

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Lifespan development in women is a discursive and creative act; a process that engenders interpersonal relationships and reflective narrative stories of changes in the self. Traditional theories of lifespan development draw predominantly from a male perspective, discounting the richness of a woman's life experiences as well as a multicultural perspective. Drawing on the peer reviewed literature regarding psychological development in women; a qualitative study was conducted using reflective questions and Photo-elicitation Interview techniques to explore what it was like to be a woman at various stages of life transition. A purposive sample of women was chosen for the study. Women …

The Trauma Of Being Diagnosed With Hiv/Aids For Zimbabwean Women, Clara M. Gona

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Background: Zimbabwe has among the highest HIV infection rates worldwide, with 1.3 million people, most of them women between 15-49 years living with the disease in 2008. The pandemic has caused crisis level adult morbidity and mortality among the economically-active groups, huge reversals of recent gains in early childhood survival, rapid decrease in population growth, and a relentless rise in the number of orphans. Missing from the Zimbabwean HIV/AIDS literature are the women's voices and experiences of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS for Zimbabwean women.
