Factors That Influence Clinicians' Intention To Use A Trauma-Informed Approach To Care In Women's Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Lauren Cestone
Factors That Influence Clinicians' Intention To Use A Trauma-Informed Approach To Care In Women's Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Lauren Cestone
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Aims: Regardless of literature citing the effectiveness of trauma-informed care (TIC) (e.g., Capezza & Najavits, 2012; Covington, 2008; Morgan et al., 2020), implementation is lacking in settings that serve women with substance use disorders (SUD) (Bartholow & Huffman, 2023; Capezza & Najavits, 2012; Terplan et al., 2015). Not implementing TIC often results in methods that are trauma-inducing, may prevent the achievement desired outcomes, and lead to negative outcomes such as drop-out and relapse (Brown et al., 2013; Capezza & Najavits, 2012; Claus & Kindleberger, 2002; Hales et al., 2019; SAMHSA, 2014). This study aims to provide a theoretically driven empirical …

Employing an interpretative phenomenological approach, this study explores the lived experiences of 15 accomplished women middle-level leaders, each with over 15 years of service across private, public, and nonprofit sectors in the United States. Grounded in relational-cultural theory (RCT), career theory, positive work relationships, and …

Women And Trade In Africa: A Case For Mainstreaming Gender In The Implementation Of The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (Afcfta), Tsotang Tsietsi
Indian Journal of International Economic Law
This article seeks to determine the extent to which the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and its protocols accord attention to the barriers and opportunities that African women face in intra-African trade. It discusses the considerable role of African women traders, for example, in agriculture, micro, small and medium enterprises, and in informal cross border trade. It questions whether, in support of their contributions in these sectors, gender has been adequately mainstreamed in the AfCFTA legal framework. Through its analysis of the contents of the instruments, it argues that there was little prioritization of women in the agreement and …
Does Hookup Culture Silence Women?, Kylee Rose Rock
Does Hookup Culture Silence Women?, Kylee Rose Rock
Honors Theses and Capstones
The issue of hookup culture on college campuses is of concern to many feminist scholars, given the alarming rates of sexual assault and unsafe sexual experiences in the college setting. This essay argues that hookup culture has the ability to silence women by means of the social landscape which college-aged adults find themselves in today. Further, this essay examines the social experiences of young women on college campuses, and advocates for a change in social habits and scripts through reconsidering our approach to the anti-porn movement in today’s modern culture. Drawing upon literature from Rae Langton’s work, "Speech Acts and …

Women In Religious Leadership Roles, Amanda Wadkins
Women In Religious Leadership Roles, Amanda Wadkins
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The experiences of women in leadership have been well studied in academia, but there remains a gap in the literature regarding and understanding of the experiences of women who are in religious leadership roles. I examined what challenges these women experience in their roles, and how they make sense of those challenges, using the constant comparative method of data analysis to analyze interviews with 12 women who have leadership roles within their protestant church or nonprofit organization. The results indicate that these individuals experience challenges that are consistent with past research on women in leadership. However, the results also illustrate …

Similarly, qualitative results showed that during and after their incarceration, these women reported being denied jobs, disrespected and viewed as incapable of changing. Some women even anticipated they would experience discrimination …

Fierce Allegories: Teaching Anne Finch’S Fables In A Course On Satire, Sharon Smith
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This essay outlines an approach to integrating Anne Finch’s work into an advanced undergraduate and/or graduate course on eighteenth-century satire, focusing particularly on her satirical verse fables. This approach encourages students to question common critical assumptions about women and satire, most particularly that women avoided satire due to its association with aggression and politics—assumptions Finch’s fables are well-suited to challenge. The essay focuses particularly on Finch’s verse fables "Upon an Impropable Undertaking," “The Eagle, the Sow, and the Cat,” and “The Owl Describing Her Young Ones.” In these poems, written in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution, Finch employs violent …

Listen When She Speaks: Young Women On Arriving At Reproductive Rights Opinions, Sydney Elaine Brammer
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
While a significant amount of time has been devoted to researching and analyzing existing opinions about reproductive rights, few have aimed to identify how young women, between the ages of 18 and 35, have arrived at those opinions. This project includes a literature review, an analysis of a series of interviews with young women, and an in-depth discussion about the importance of understanding their experiences. Above all else, it suggests that there are several common points of interest and demands for change from women all across the spectrum on reproductive rights issues, and critical similarities in the ways that they …

In this virtual realm, a distinct form of solidarity has emerged, allowing women to amplify their voices beyond the confines of the non-virtual world. An exemplary illustration of this phenomenon is the Instagram account @perempuanberkisah, which actively advocates for women’s issues, particularly focusing on cases of violence. @perempuanberkisah curates diverse content, frequently featuring themes related to violence, …

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: The Court's Forgotten Virtue, Camille Pollutro
R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: The Court's Forgotten Virtue, Camille Pollutro
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article recommends a shift in constitutional interpretation that requires the existence of respect for the class at issue when a fundamental right is being considered under the narrow, historical deeply rooted test of the Fourteenth Amendment. By focusing on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, this Article highlights that the class at issue—women—are having their fundamental rights decided for them by the legal sources of 1868. In applying this strict and narrow historical deeply rooted test, the Court fails to consider the lack of respect and autonomy that women had in 1868. To the Court, if twenty-eight out …

Breaking The Glass Ceiling: How Women Are Succeeding While Being Undervalued In The Professional Orchestral World, Kristin Demos
Graduate Student Work
The symphony has been largely male dominated for centuries. Women had been discouraged from playing music and essentially had to create a place for themselves in the professional orchestral world. They faced gender discrimination and harassment along their struggle to be accepted. Now that women are more represented; they still have to face harassment and a discrepancy in salary. It can be argued that the discrimination against women is still prevalent, but they have made great strides and found success in this male-dominated profession. This paper intends to investigate specifically the role of women musicians in the western music orchestral …

Tourism may be a source of growing gender inequity in some tourist setting due to their cultural and historical contexts even though it is a potential instrument for improving the welfare of women through employment and entrepreneurial activities. Many studies have focused on the role of tourism in improving the lives of women in Tanzania, but few have focused on women employed in male dominated positions like adventure tour guiding. Research reveals a longstanding tradition of leadership in higher education predominantly held by heterosexual White men despite the increased representation of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals (Gagliardi et al., 2017; Jackson & Harris, 2005; Melidona et al., 2023; Moody, 2018; Titcomb, 2014; Waring, 2003). While the number of students and faculty members have grown over the last century and a half, the number of Black, women, or queer executive leaders in higher education has not shown a similar growth rate (Commodore et al., 2016; Gardner, 2019; Jackson & Harris, 2005; Melidona et al., 2023; Moody, 2018). The Perceptions And Lived Experiences Of African American Female Faculty At Predominantly White Institutions: A Phenomenological Study, Jasmine L. Jackson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative phenomenological approach aims to understand the perceptions and lived experiences of African-American female faculty at predominantly White institutions and the strategies used to overcome barriers. The theory guiding this study is intersectionality theory, introduced by Kimberlè Crenshaw, discovering the multilayers of discrimination that women face and providing a template to encourage antidiscrimination. This theory adequately addresses the focus of this inquiry because it highlights the discrimination often experienced by African-American female faculty and the experiences of various individuals from the targeted population. This study's methodology was based on interviews with different African-American female faculty at predominantly White institutions. …
