Women's Banks And Women's Access To Credit: Competition Between Marketplace And Regulatory Solutions To Gender Discrimination, Kenneth Anderson Jan 1987

Women's Banks And Women's Access To Credit: Competition Between Marketplace And Regulatory Solutions To Gender Discrimination, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

During the 1970's, as more women entered the work force as managers, laborers and entrepreneurs, women's credit and financing needs intensified. Yet banks and other financial institutions persisted in discriminating against women in extending credit. This discrimination reflected a view that women were bad credit risks because they generally had no independent source or control of income. Without access to credit, women could not develop independent sources of income, build an asset base or develop their own credit histories. This in turn precluded future extensions of credit to women. Denial of access to credit for women was a cause as …

A Study Of Feminine Role Models Selected By Catholic Women, Miriam F. Kaeser Edd Jan 1987

A Study Of Feminine Role Models Selected By Catholic Women, Miriam F. Kaeser Edd

Dissertations

Women are being challenged to greater levels of growth and self-development because of the expanding opportunities and options available to them in nearly ever facet of society today. Most women need the support and inspiration of other women as role models in order to respond to these challenges. In living out their faith commitment in the present culture, Catholic women also need role models. The Catholic Church has long presented its members with a variety of saints, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, as role models. Are Mary and women saints viable role models for Catholic women today? If …

Equality, Ideology And Oppression: Women And Thecanadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, N Colleen Sheppard Sep 1986

Equality, Ideology And Oppression: Women And Thecanadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, N Colleen Sheppard

Dalhousie Law Journal

The major objective of this article is to contribute to an understanding of the potential impact of the equality provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms2 on the lives of women. This requires an awareness of the realities of women's inequality in our society, an understanding of the legal conceptualization of equality, and a consideration of the role of "law" in remedying societal injustice. My focus in this article is on the second concern-that is, on legal theories of equality as they relate to women. I begin with a brief outline of the conflicting ideological approaches that infuse …

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of SEEDS focuses on a project developed to integrate low-income women into Jamaica's construction industry. In two years, 34 women passed through the project's basic training and skills upgrading courses. More than 90 percent of these women became employed, the majority as masons and carpenters. The story of how this field was identified as a potential source of income for women, and how the project developed and evolved in response to changing circumstances, presents many useful lessons. These should be of particular interest to those seeking to identify employment areas where women's participation is feasible and in helping …

Sex Discrimination In Newscasting, Leslie S. Gielow Dec 1985

Sex Discrimination In Newscasting, Leslie S. Gielow

Michigan Law Review

This Note argues that the current judicial deference to viewer surveys used by television stations in newscasting employment decisions is unwarranted. Part I explores how different treatment of women newscasters constitutes sex-plus discrimination. Part II demonstrates that viewer surveys almost always reflect sexual stereotypes that are impermissible under title VII, and argues that such surveys should be presumptively inadmissible as evidence to rebut a claim of sex discrimination. Indeed, mere use of these surveys may in and of itself establish a prima facie case of sex discrimination.

Part III contends that sex discrimination in the news industry resulting from the …

An Investigation Of Contemporary Feminist Arguments On Paul's Teaching On The Role Of Women In The Church, Hershel House Wayne May 1985

An Investigation Of Contemporary Feminist Arguments On Paul's Teaching On The Role Of Women In The Church, Hershel House Wayne

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

As may be readily seen, mass confusion pervades this problem. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the various approaches interpreters have used to understand the apostle Paul's teaching on the role of women in the church and to offer alternative ways to view the Pauline texts. Not only will I interact with the feminists on their specific perspectives of the pertinent Pauline texts, but I will examine the hermeneutical presuppositions of these writers and also attempt to discern their perspective of Scripture and how that affects the exegetical fruit they produce.

The Minneapolis Anti-Pornography Ordinance: A Valid Assertion Of Civil Rights?, Winifred Ann Sandler Jan 1985

The Minneapolis Anti-Pornography Ordinance: A Valid Assertion Of Civil Rights?, Winifred Ann Sandler

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The author of this student note examines a recent Minneapolis city ordinance that declares pornography to be both subordination of and a form of sex discrimination towards women. First Amendment proponents challenged the ordinance as unconstitutional. The author considers whether the state has a compelling interest in protecting its citizens from civil rights violations, and whether that interest can overcome first amendment rights. The author concludes that pornography is neither a civil rights violation, nor a category of unprotected speech.

Washington's Equal Rights Amendment: It Says What It Means And It Means What It Says, Patricia L. Proebsting Jan 1985

Washington's Equal Rights Amendment: It Says What It Means And It Means What It Says, Patricia L. Proebsting

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment begins with a discussion of the ERA's legislative history and the legislature's attempt to bring state statutes into compliance with the ERA upon its passage. Next, judicial interpretations of the new constitutional guarantee are compared to the interpretation of the Washington Constitution's privileges and immunities clause. Finally, the Comment compares Washington's standard of review with a similar standard used by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and argues that the Washington Supreme Court should adopt the absolute standard applied by the Pennsylvania courts.

American Women's Intellectual History In The Revolutionary And New Republican Era: Charting A Shift In Feminist Theory, Holly B. Fechner Jan 1985

American Women's Intellectual History In The Revolutionary And New Republican Era: Charting A Shift In Feminist Theory, Holly B. Fechner

Honors Papers

This paper is a study of American women's intellectual history in the period 1770-1815. My aim is to develop a coherent conception of women's moral point of view as it is presented in prescriptive literature, political tracts, and women's own writing. Because of the nature of my goal, I will attempt to glean women's ideas out of the extant primary source material of this period. As the aim of this study implies the existence of a prescribed point of view which women were to share, I will use numerous examples from the genre of prescriptive literature.

Unlike our world of …

A Review Of Explicit And Implicit Propositions About Women As Terrorists, Ineke Haan Marshall, Vincent J. Webb, Dennis Hoffman

Publications

The purpose of this paper on women as terrorists is threefold. The first aim is to examine a portion of the existing literature in order to identify explicit and implicit propositions and hypotheses about the causal dynamics involved in female terrorism. The second is to make a critical examination of these propositions and hypotheses and to categorize the nature of prevailing explanations of women as terrorists. Finally, the policy implications of the various approaches to explaining female involvement in terrorist activities are examined.

Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog Jan 1984

Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The poem prefaces Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony, the story of a young American Indian who regains the wholeness and meaning of his life by rediscovering his ancient tribal roots and rituals.[1] It is a story of the American Southwest, especially the Pueblo-Laguna people. Anyone even vaguely familiar with American Indian culture knows that the groups were originally as different from each other as modern-day Swedes are from Albanians or Catalans, if not more so. There were more than 2,000 independent culture groups in Columbus's time, and they spoke 500 different languages belonging to fifty distinct language groups, some as …

Results show that the desire to work sclae can effectively segment the market. Blurring between categories may be studied to further delineate factors that can contribute to segmentation.

An Art Therapy Program Designed For Women Recovering From Alcoholism In An Extended Care Treatment Center, Mary Jo Chapman Jan 1984

An Art Therapy Program Designed For Women Recovering From Alcoholism In An Extended Care Treatment Center, Mary Jo Chapman

Theses

The problem of alcoholism is a major health concern in our society . I t is considered to be a disease that is treatable, but not curable . The number of women entering treatment for alcoholism has increased steadily in t he past few years . Since statistics indicate that there is a high rate of relapse and recidivism within this group, treatment methods that can aid in the recovery process are important.

Art Therapy is a non-verbal approach to traditional treatment methods. It aids the therapeutic process by transforming unconscious and conscious material into symbols rather than words. The …

A Synthesis Of Theme And Style: "Prelude" As A Turning Point In The Fiction Of Katherine Mansfield, Peggy Orenstein Jan 1983

A Synthesis Of Theme And Style: "Prelude" As A Turning Point In The Fiction Of Katherine Mansfield, Peggy Orenstein

Honors Papers

Katherine Mansfield's contribution to modern British fiction has been virtually ignored in recent years; the two major periods of critical attention to her work were in the 1920's (right after her death) and the early 1950's. Critics of both groups have given extensive consideration to Mansfield's experimentation--independent of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce--with interior monologue, shifting narrative perspective and moments of revelation However, analyses of Mansfield have predominantly ignored her concerns as a woman writer. Mansfield examines women's roles and women's sexuality in nearly all of her stories; she probes women's circumstances from their own perspective and shows the effect …

The Effects Of Exercise On Women's Self-Esteem, Wendy Laurie Biddle May 1982

The Effects Of Exercise On Women's Self-Esteem, Wendy Laurie Biddle

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The effects of a 12-week session of aerobic dancing were examined on two groups of women, assigned into fit and unfit groups. The subjects had voluntarily enrolled in aerobic dancing prior to the study. Self-Esteem scores were obtained using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale during the first and tenth or eleventh weeks of the session. Pretest and posttest scores were analyzed along with the variables of age, marital status, weight loss, and smoking habits. A significantly higher gain score (posttest score subtracted from pretest score) was found on those women who attended three weekly classes compared to those who attended two …

Surrogate Gestation And The Protection Of Choice, Louise E. Graham Jan 1982

Surrogate Gestation And The Protection Of Choice, Louise E. Graham

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Proponents of surrogate gestation contracts base their case on both the constitutional privacy rights of persons involved in the contract and the notion that contractual agreements are capable of sufficiently protecting all interests involved. This article first speculates on how courts might handle surrogate gestation contracts under existing laws and offers arguments for and against such contracts. Although some commentary on the contractual aspect of the agreement exists, little attention has been given to the privacy arguments of the parties. The major focus of this article, therefore, is upon the nature of the privacy claims asserted by the prospective parents …

Moving Beyond The Mask: The Progression Of Women In Christina Rossetti's Poetry, Marianne Skoczek Jan 1982

Moving Beyond The Mask: The Progression Of Women In Christina Rossetti's Poetry, Marianne Skoczek

Honors Papers

In this paper I will be concerned with one of these more neglected perspectives. I will be looking at the image of women as portrayed in Rossetti's non-devotional poetry, showing that, contrary to what I suppose could be called popular (literary) opinion, her women are often -- and increasingly so -- strong rather than weak, and that Rossetti herself was a conscious observer and critic of the "options" open to the Victorian woman. Given the emphasis that my work will take, I shall also be looking at various aspects of the poet's personal life, some of which have been largely …

University of Miami Law Review

In this article, the author examines the potential ramifications of the Family Protection Act, a bill recently introduced in the Senate by Senators Jespen and Laxalt. The author criticizes the bill both as a mechanism for legislatively enforcing the traditional role of women in American society and as a threat to civil liberties in general.
