Fordham Urban Law Journal
This piece contains the findings of a survey conducted to evaluate the impact of the New York Task Force On Women in the Court's Report in the area of domestic violence and of the progress that has taken place since the Report's publication. The authors hope to provide insight not only into the next steps that should be taken in New York City, but also into the most effective methods of implementing change to combat bias against women in the courtroom. The authors conclude that although progress has been made in the area of combating bias against women in the …

An Examination Of Attitudes In Females Identified With An Eating Disorder, Iris Jo-Ann Lee
Theses
The main purpose of this study was to investigate attitude demonstrated by participants in an outpatient multidimensional group treatment program for eating disorders. The problem concerned clarifying the attitudinal differences between eating disordered and non-eating disordered females after involvement in a time-limited treatment group. Procedural guidelines of the study were described for two groups designated as 5 eating disordered experimental subjects and 29 non-eating disordered control comparison subjects. Both groups completed the Eating Disorder Inventory, a 64-item self- report inventory which allowed measurement at pretest and posttest intervals. Data from this measure were collected before the beginning of treatment and …

Gender Influences In The College Classroom: Optimizing The Learning Environment For Women, Susan Ross Bell
Gender Influences In The College Classroom: Optimizing The Learning Environment For Women, Susan Ross Bell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Administrators at Missouri Southern State College (MSSC) recently identified increasing student retention as a major goal. Consistent with postsecondary institutions across the country, women students at MSSC are the "new majority" of undergraduates. An effective retention effort would require identification of women's unique learning needs and the implications for teaching and learning.
Since the majority of MSSC students are commuters, the classroom represents their major learning environment. Few faculty members were aware of gender influences in the classroom and their effect on women's learning. The purpose of the project was to identify women's unique learning needs and recommend teaching practices …

The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum
The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.
Effects Of Bse On Depression/Anxiety In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Cynthia Ann Schnetter O'Neal
Effects Of Bse On Depression/Anxiety In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Cynthia Ann Schnetter O'Neal
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …
Factors Influencing A Battered Woman's Perception Of Controllability In Violent Intimate Relationships, Patricia Ann Chin Dnsc, Msn, Rn
Factors Influencing A Battered Woman's Perception Of Controllability In Violent Intimate Relationships, Patricia Ann Chin Dnsc, Msn, Rn
Dissertations
Despite the fact that domestic violence has been the focus of empirical investigation for more than twenty years, little is known about the phenomenon. While the available body of knowledge provides a sketchy picture of the abused woman and her abuser, and helps to dispel many of the myths surrounding spousal abuse, it provides very little insight into the dynamics of wife abuse. This study, based upon a foundation of the Reformulated Learned Helplessness Theory, was designed to explore the nature of the relationships among concepts that have been identified within the context of battering, and that were thought to …

Dissertations
The purpose of this ethnographic research was to discover the influence of President Judith Valles' gender and ethnicity on her leadership behavior at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California, and to determine if similar influences existed among the other eight Hispanic women presidents of community colleges in the U.S. A composite profile of the nine presidents was developed. More than 100 interviews were conducted from a broad spectrum of participants, including seven of the nine Hispanic women presidents. The researcher became a participant observer at Golden West College for the fall of 1991. All the presidents were strongly influenced …
Review Essay: Feminism, Lawyering, And Death Row, Joan W. Howarth
Review Essay: Feminism, Lawyering, And Death Row, Joan W. Howarth
Scholarly Works
Representing men on death row is confounding, but not without reward. This lawyering work has taught me at least two lessons, the subjects of this essay. First, capital punishment--our attempt to use legal procedures to kill people fairly--is a feminist issue, or should be. Second, death row representation is too big a job for lawyers; we need to recruit poets. To develop these ideas, and perhaps to convince you without requiring you to undertake the same path to these conclusions, I am appropriating novelist Beverly Lowry's stunning new book, Crossed Over: A Murder, A Memoir. Crossed Over is the story …

Legal Images Of Battered Women: Redefining The Issue Of Separation, Martha R. Mahoney
Legal Images Of Battered Women: Redefining The Issue Of Separation, Martha R. Mahoney
Michigan Law Review
Part I of this article discusses violence in the ordinary lives of women, describing individual and societal denial that pretends domestic violence is rare when statistics show it is common, and describing the ways in which motherhood shapes women's experience of violence and choices in response to violence. Part II examines definitions of battering and evaluates their effectiveness at disguising or revealing the struggle for control at the heart of the battering process. I then describe in Part III the pressures that self-defense and custody cases place on legal and cultural images of battered women and contrast the development of …

The Effect Of Menopause Stage And Exercise On Perceived Body Image And Depression, Barbara Anne Waters
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the impact of menopause stage and level of exercise on depression and perceived body image with 101 women aged 40-60 years. Instruments included a demographic information sheet, the Life Experience Survey (LES), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ). The relationship between menopause stage and depression was not significant. The relationship between menopause stage and perceived body-image was also not significant. Menopausal women do not appear to be more depressed or to have lower body-image perceptions when compared to premenopausal women. The main effect for amount of exercise and perceived body image …
Looking At Barbie: Social Comparison Processes And Body Esteem Among Women, Sally Elizabeth Ware
Looking At Barbie: Social Comparison Processes And Body Esteem Among Women, Sally Elizabeth Ware
Student Work
In this thesis, three areas are described: the phenomenon of body dissatisfaction among apparently normal-sized women from a sociocultural perspective; social comparison theory, which is proposed to be the mechanism by which the phenomenon operates; and the results of an experiment designed not only to test the nature of the phenomenon itself, but also to test certain components of social comparison theory, such as selection of comparison targets and the role of derogation.
The study reports women’s responses to inescapable social comparison on the attribute of body size and shape with two groups of social comparison targets: photographs from popular …

Widows, Education And Social Change In Twentieth Century Banaras, Nita Kumar
Widows, Education And Social Change In Twentieth Century Banaras, Nita Kumar
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In the first half of this century, some one dozen women in Banaras played key rotes in channelling the educational movement into new directions, expanding its agenda to include girls, especially poor girls. These women stand out as pioneering in that they founded schools, dynamic in the way they administered and expanded them, and radical in the vision they had for their students. What makes the case of these women particularly interesting is that they were mostly widows. They rejected the familiar stereotypes for widows through their activism, but in subtle ways that retained for them the respect of society …

Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, And The Powers Of Creation, Danielle Kolker
Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, And The Powers Of Creation, Danielle Kolker
Honors Papers
When Mary Shelley referred to her first novel, Frankenstein, as "my hideous progeny," she could not have comprehended the full significance of her words. For while her phrase eloquently compares her creation of the text with Victor Frankenstein's creation of the monster, we, reading the novel today, are witness to the "hideous progeny" to which her own text has given rise. Version after version has sprung forth, focusing on different aspects of her story, leading to such productions as the famous 1931 Boris Karloff film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and the recent Edward Scissorhands. In the past fifteen …

Mormon Women And Depression, Jeanmarie Maxwell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the prevalence and level of depression among Mormon women compared to non-Mormon women. The hypothesis states that the incidence of depression will be higher among LDS women than non-LDS women. A significant negative relationship is predicted to exist between religious practice and depression where the less they practice, the more depressed they would tend to be; A random sample of 45 LDS and 49 non-LDS women were given a survey instrument to measure their level and rate of depression and their degree of religious belief and practice. LDS women appear to be more depressed than the rest …

Time Management Behaviors Of Single Parent Women Educators At A Two-Year College, Kenneth Harold Steidel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Case study methodology was utilized to examine and describe time management behavior of single parent women educators at a two-year college. A non-probability, stratified sample of convenience (Snowball Sampling) where participants were referred by colleagues, friends, and other participants processed and determined final selection of three subjects for the case studies. The three participants selected for the study were single parent women, between the ages of 35 and 45, teaching full-time at a two-year college, with no more than two children living at home. The children were all teenagers attending either junior or senior high schools. Each participant had been …
