Note, The Convention For The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women: Radical, Reasonable, Or Reactionary?, Sarah C. Zearfoss
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Note will explore the merits behind these positions and attempt a resolution. If the potential effect of the Convention can only be to freeze and enshrine sex equality law as it currently exists, one who is interested in achieving changes in the law for the purpose of benefiting women will not want to put her energy into lobbying for ratification. It is therefore important to get past political strategies and determine what promise the Convention might hold for women in the United States. If the United States were to ratify the Convention, what changes, if any, would result?
Unwelcome Imports: Racism, Sexism, And Foreign Investment, William H. Lash Iii
Unwelcome Imports: Racism, Sexism, And Foreign Investment, William H. Lash Iii
Michigan Journal of International Law
This article will address the problems minorities and women face from Japanese foreign direct investment. This article focuses on Japanese direct investment because the rapid rise in Japan's direct investment in the United States, combined with a record of discrimination by Japanese firms in Japan and abroad, makes Japanese investment the best example of the problems addressed in this article. However, the discriminatory attitudes described here may well be held by other foreign investors, and therefore, the legislation proposed later in this article addresses a broader problem.

The Effects Of A 12 Week Aerobic Bench Stepping Conditioning Program On Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Muscular Leg Strength In College Women, Sharon Lee Schoff
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a 12 week aerobic bench stepping conditioning program on maximum oxygen uptake, time on treadmill and muscular leg strength, measured by knee flexion and extension strength, on college women ranging in age from 18 to 25 years. Prior to a twelve week conditioning period subjects were assessed for maximum oxygen uptake (VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} max) and time on treadmill (TOT) using a graded treadmill test. Muscular leg strength was measured using Bally's Life Fitness Machines, averaging three maximum knee flexion lifts and extension lifts. These same measurements were repeated following the …

Time Management Behaviors Of Single Parent Women Educators At A Two-Year College, Kenneth Harold Steidel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Case study methodology was utilized to examine and describe time management behavior of single parent women educators at a two-year college. A non-probability, stratified sample of convenience (Snowball Sampling) where participants were referred by colleagues, friends, and other participants processed and determined final selection of three subjects for the case studies. The three participants selected for the study were single parent women, between the ages of 35 and 45, teaching full-time at a two-year college, with no more than two children living at home. The children were all teenagers attending either junior or senior high schools. Each participant had been …

The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd
The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd
Dissertations
Sexual harassment has grown to epidemic proportions since being documented as a workplace problem. Court cases are rising along with costs to organizations from litigation, turnover, absenteeism and stress-related medical claims. Courts are continually refining the legal definition of sexual harassment, resulting in a steady expansion of employers' liability. Perceptions of men and women regarding what constitutes sexual harassment differ markedly as do their responses to sexually oriented behaviors at work. Development of a formula for effectively preventing sexual harassment is, therefore, a complex and perplexing exercise. Two of three women serving in the military report that they have been …
A Model Of Organizational Commitment In Staff Nurses, Donna Burgener Adams Dnsc
A Model Of Organizational Commitment In Staff Nurses, Donna Burgener Adams Dnsc
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the impact of work stress, sex role organization, and organizational tenure on self-esteem and work satisfaction, and ultimately, on the organizational commitment of registered nurses. An eclectic framework was utilized which incorporated organizational and personal variables. The correlational design resulted in a temporally ordered causal recursive model with linkages supported by a literature review. Past research has demonstrated less organizationally committed nurses more prone to leave their positions, and high turnover is detrimental to patient care as well as costly to the health care system. The sample consisted of 143 …

Child Care: Meeting The Needs Of Working Mothers And Their Children, Caroline Arnold, Jorge Mejia, Aster Haregot, Ann Leonard, Cassie Landers
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS, developed in cooperation with the Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development, with support from UNICEF, seeks to bring together the critical elements of women's work and child care, reviewing the issues from three different perspectives: child care as a means of enabling women to work, as a source of employment for women, and as a way of meeting the developmental needs of young children. The report examines three different UNICEF-supported approaches to child care on three different continents—Asia (Nepal), Africa (Ethiopia), and South America (Ecuador)—that have been developed with the needs of working women …

El Papel De Las Mujeres En La Conservación De Los Bosques Del Nepal, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Politicization Of Maternal Care: The Lawrence Textile Strike Of 1912, Mary-Beth Moylan
The Politicization Of Maternal Care: The Lawrence Textile Strike Of 1912, Mary-Beth Moylan
Honors Papers
The Progressive era saw a series of social reforms and mass movements for better living and working conditions. Middle-class women emerged as the "housekeepers" of the public arena. Women like Jane Addams started these trends and acted as benevolent organizers for the immigrant people, who were entering the United States only to find crowded conditions and hostile cities. Strikes over dangerous work environments became pressing concerns. A history of related actions began to develop with the Triangle Fire disaster in New York City, the Lawrence strike in Massachusetts, and then the strikes in the mid-teens in Passaic and Patterson, New …

Fetal Protection And Employment Discrimination - The Johnson Controls Case, George J. Annas
Fetal Protection And Employment Discrimination - The Johnson Controls Case, George J. Annas
Faculty Scholarship
Employers have historically limited women's access to traditionally male, high-paying jobs. In one famous case early in this century, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an Oregon law that forbade hiring women for jobs that required more than 10 hours of work a day in factories. The Chief Justice explained that this restriction was reasonable because "healthy mothers are essential to vigorous offspring" and preserving the physical well-being of women helps "preserve the strength and vigor of the race." This rationale was never particularly persuasive, and women's hours have not been limited in traditionally female, low-paid fields of employment, such as …

Domestic Violence Against Women: A Comparative Analysis Of Remedies Under The American And Indian Legal Systems, Anita Elizabeth Jacob Ninan
LLM Theses and Essays
The purpose of this thesis is to compare the legal remedies available to women who are the victims of domestic violence in the United States and India and analyze whether the existing laws in the two systems are effective and sufficient in combating this growing problem. Domestic violence against women is a reality. It haunts the female species form the cradle to the grave, manifesting itself in sociocultural crime peculiar to some societies like India, such as female feticide, female infanticide, bride burning dowry deaths, and wife battering (both a developing country like India and an economically developed country like …
A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai
A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai
Dissertations
Problem
In Kenya, the majority of women in education occupy classroom teaching positions. Educational officers, in their hiring practices, appear to overlook women as resources, thereby depriving the schools of the skills and talents of potentially capable leaders. Students are also denied the role models of female leaders. This study investigates how difficult it is for women to secure professional careers in educational administration in Kenya.
Method
The population consisted of all the female teachers employed by the Ministry of Education in Kenya, and female Kenyan students in North American universities. A questionnaire was used to collect data from the …
Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, And The Powers Of Creation, Danielle Kolker
Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, And The Powers Of Creation, Danielle Kolker
Honors Papers
When Mary Shelley referred to her first novel, Frankenstein, as "my hideous progeny," she could not have comprehended the full significance of her words. For while her phrase eloquently compares her creation of the text with Victor Frankenstein's creation of the monster, we, reading the novel today, are witness to the "hideous progeny" to which her own text has given rise. Version after version has sprung forth, focusing on different aspects of her story, leading to such productions as the famous 1931 Boris Karloff film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and the recent Edward Scissorhands. In the past fifteen …

The Experience Of Female Nurses Being Cared For: A Phenomenological Analysis, Sharon Lu Skinner Shetlar Dnsc, Ms, Bsn, Rn
Dissertations
The focus of this phenomenological inquiry was the question: What is the meaning (essential structure) of the experience of being cared for as lived by female nurses? The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the experience of being cared for. Phenomenologic methodology was used for this study. Data analysis was patterned after the guidelines set out by Colaizzi, and Miles and Huberman. Fifteen female nurses described their experiences of being cared for during two interviews with the researcher. Through analysis of the first audio-taped interview metathemes describing the phenomena and a unity of meaning emerged. During the …

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports statistics on criminal victimization for 1989 from the National Crime Survey, which measures personal and household offenses, including crimes not reported to police. The Alaska Sentencing Commission, created to evaluate Alaska’s sentencing laws and practices and to recommend improvements, begins its work.
Sex-Bias Topics In The Criminal Law Course: A Survey Of Criminal Law Professors, Nancy S. Erickson, Mary Ann Lamanna
Sex-Bias Topics In The Criminal Law Course: A Survey Of Criminal Law Professors, Nancy S. Erickson, Mary Ann Lamanna
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article addresses the empirical question of whether law school curricula have advanced to the stage of integrating materials on gender-related topics into core courses, thus exposing students to gender-related topics in the law and presenting a perspective shaped by women's as well as men's experiences. We examine one of the central courses of the law school curriculum: criminal law. Although some of the attention directed to sex discrimination in law has focused on specific areas of criminal law such as rape and spouse abuse, a more systematic scrutiny of the substantive rules of criminal law and the ways in …
Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.
