America And The Rational Road To Peace, Richard D. Poll

BYU Studies

In the midst of the Cold War, Richard Poll asserts that reason can prevent the onset of World War III. Because of the high cost of a nuclear war, countries are more hesitant in starting a conflict. The four main dangers America faces in encouraging another general war (doing too little, doing too much, doing too little and then too much, and confusing success with failure) can be overcome by using logic and reason. Thus the people themselves have the ability, through reason, to prevent a third world war.

The treatise offered here seeks to extract and delineate, from three leading figures of the Reformation period, three basic attitudes toward the use of force and violence which have been, and continue to be, assumed by the followers of Jesus Christ. When Constantine first raised the Christian banner in front of his armies he was already tending in the direction of the first position exemplified most clearly in the career and theology of Thomas Muentzcr.

Secular authority, according to Luther, is in a sense the extension of patriarchal authority to the community. As such it is part of the present order of creation, by which Luther meant the conditions of human activity and existence in history. However, its constitutional form, like all other political settlements within the frame of Moral Law, was for him a matter of human expediency. For his part, Luther was content to accept the political settlement of his time.

The termination of war must, at the outset, be distinguished Ifrom the termination of hostilities or actual warfare. As has been said, war is "not the mere employment of force, but the existence of the legal condition of things in which rights are or may be prosecuted by force. Thus, if two nations declare war one against the other, war exists, though no force whatever may as yet have been employed."'
