Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy
Theses and Dissertations
This research details a point of reference to understand two case studies of cooperation that developed among lower-level, or non policy-making bureaucrats during times of conflict or war. Using components of game theory, I propose that when an international conflictual relationship occurs that resembles an iterated Prisoners' Dilemma, and that meets certain conditions, tacit cooperation can emerge. Tacit cooperation consists of illicit or implied cooperation that is not sanctioned at the national policy level.
In this research I develop a framework of tacit cooperation, relying heavily upon Robert Axelrod's theory of evolutionary cooperation. With the framework in place, I then …

Soup and Bread is a program that allows students to easily donate money to different charities through eating soup and bread once a week. In order to keep the program running, they need a minimum of 350 participants, but the program kept missing the quota of participants. On the Viewpoints page, a page of opinion pieces written by students not associated with the Voice, there are numerous small articles and a political cartoon about the president. Opportunity, Willingness, And The Diffusion Of War, Randolph M. Siverson, Harvey Starr

Using borders and alliances as indicators of opportunity and willingness, respectively, we test the relationship between the sea and the diffusion of war during the 1816-1965 period. The impact of borders and alliances, individually and in combination, on the growth of ongoing war through "infectious" diffusion is shown through the comparison of baseline cases to cases where states at peace were exposed to various "treatments" comprised of warring border nations or warring alliance partners. The findings indicate that the probability of war diffusion is substantially increased as opportunities and willingness increase, particularly when such geographic and political factors are combined. …

Christianity And The Just War Tradition : Is It Possible To Be A Good Citizen While Being A Good Christian?, Philip M. Heuser

Christians are faced with a difficult decision when required to engage in war. By studying the ideas of St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as more recent scholars, the logic of the just war tradition is examined. In opposition to this, the arguments of John Yoder, a proponent of Christian pacifism, are also analyzed. The key differences between these viewpoints is the level of responsibility Christians should assume in directing historic events. The pacifist argument is that humility and suffering in faith by Christians wins the ultimate victory for good. The just war advocates state that military service …

On June 14, 1985, Robert Stethem was shot to death aboard a hijacked TWA airliner. On October 7, 1985, the Italian cruise-liner, Achille Lauro, was hijacked and the next day Leon Klinghofer was killed and thrown overboard. On Julyu 2, 1986, Rodrgio Rojas was mortally wounded when he was doused with gasoline and set afire while walking with protesters in Santiago, Chile. Soviets are said to leave booby-trapped dolls for Afghan Moujahadeen children. There is evidence that the United States government directly supports the Nicaraguan contras who, in waging their guerilla war, allegedly have killed innocent citizens. It is …

LDS doctrine establishes three courses of action in conflict resolution: a) selective pacifism, b) action as proxy for God as prescribed under the doctrine of continuous revelation and c) absolute pacifism. Of these three, only absolute and selective pacifism are of practical use to the modern member of the LDS Church. Of the remaining two, government political decisions and technological momentum have moved current U.S. defense strategy and weaponry away from a defensive to an offense posture, thus invalidating the case of the selective pacifist and leaving only the absolutist's stand. In Man, the State and War, Kenneth N. Waltz claims that for a peace prescription to be valid, it must be based on a proper view of the causes of war. Waltz analyzes the validity of three basic causes of war: man himself, the characteristics of the nation-state, and the international system.
I have examined the views of Elder Stephen L Richards on peace and war in the context of the Waltz framework. Elders Richards believed that the failings of men were the primary causes of war. His prescription for peace was widespread acceptance of the Gospel. He disagreed …
