Timing Considerations In Visual Communication, Ahmad Eissa Aloumi May 2008

Timing Considerations In Visual Communication, Ahmad Eissa Aloumi

Theses

Viewers are surrounded by visual stimuli on a daily basis. These visuals, which may have intriguing and/or exciting qualities, enable designers to propose effective design solutions that could have heightened impact on the viewer. With this in mind, some designers attempt to construct crystal-clear messages that are eye-catching and easily understood, while other designers try to deliver messages enveloped by a planned ambiguity, which offers diverse paths of comprehension. In the end, this intentional ambiguity can eventually guide viewers toward a single understanding. Since ambiguity is an outcome of complex principles related to aesthetic and conceptual decision-making, often it is …

American Sign Language: An Influence On Graphic Design Problem-Solving, Allison Ucci May 2008

American Sign Language: An Influence On Graphic Design Problem-Solving, Allison Ucci

Theses

In American Sign Language (ASL), variables of communication such as volume, tone, emotion, and emphasis are represented through the deliberate use of these variables which include: handshape, location of the sign in proximity to the human body, movement, direction, and repetition. ASL imposes strict rules of how and when to use each of these variables. Together, the rules and variables create a language of communication that is of equal value to spoken language. Similarly, these attributes currently exist in graphic design message making. The alternation of one or all variables in design can also result in an entirely new idea. …

Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis Jan 2007

Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Media use of hurricane graphics to apprise populations vulnerable to severe weather provides a persuasive demonstration of the importance and complexity of visual communication. Surprisingly little research, however, has explored how audiences interpret weather graphics. This study examined whether the general public and the National Weather Service share a common understanding of selected weather related terms and meaning of a NWS informational graphic. Using a coorientation model, general public responses to a questionnaire were compared to definitions prescribed by the NWS. Additionally, the public were asked questions to measure trust of the NWS as a credible and reliable source of …

Process Modelling Support For The Conceptual Modelling Phase Of A Simulation Project, Cathal Heavey, John Ryan Dec 2006

Process Modelling Support For The Conceptual Modelling Phase Of A Simulation Project, Cathal Heavey, John Ryan

Conference papers

While many developments have taken place around supporting the model coding task of simulation, there are few tools available to assist in the conceptual modelling phase. Several authors have reported the advantages of using process modelling tools in the early phases of a simulation project.

This paper provides an overview of process modelling tools in relation to their support for simulation, categorizing the tools into formal method and descriptive methods. A conclusion from this review is that none of the tools available adequately support the requirements gathering phase of simulation. This is not surprising as none of the process modelling …

What Are The Visual Communication Requirements Of A Built Environment?, Robert Harland Nov 2006

What Are The Visual Communication Requirements Of A Built Environment?, Robert Harland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper aims to explore the role that visual communication plays in the urban environment, and the potential for further discussion as a single domain. The scope of enquiry covers aspects of Geography, Urban Design and Graphic Design, exploring briefly the broad contexts for the subject, and the relationship between the emerging disciplines that are playing an increasing and highly visible role in how we use public spaces. It concludes that Graphic Design is playing a significant role in determining the success or failure of the multitude of behaviour settings in the built environment, and a closer relationship with Urban …

Law In The Digital Age: How Visual Communication Technologies Are Transforming The Practice, Theory, And Teaching Of Law, Richard K. Sherwin, Neal Feigenson, Christina Spiesel

ExpressO

Law today has entered the digital age. The way law is practiced – how truth and justice are represented and assessed – is increasingly dependent on what appears on electronic screens in courtrooms, law offices, government agencies, and elsewhere. Practicing lawyers know this and are rapidly adapting to the new era of digital visual rhetoric. Legal theory and education, however, have yet to catch up. This article is the first systematic effort to theorize law's transformation by new visual and multimedia technologies and to set out the changes in legal pedagogy that are needed to prepare law students for practice …

The Historical Geography Of Good Thunder, Minnesota, 1870-2005, Robert L. Bothmann Jan 2005

The Historical Geography Of Good Thunder, Minnesota, 1870-2005, Robert L. Bothmann

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Good Thunder is a small village in south central Minnesota on the Maple River. Founded in 1870, it is named for two prominent Indian leaders, one a Winnebago chief who lived at the site, and the other a Dakota who was active in the conflict of 1862. It began as an agricultural commerce center when the railroad arrived in Minnesota. The purpose of the study is to consider the transformation of the village, focusing upon the origins and significance of its physical and cultural features in the context of historical geography. The changing historical events and geographical features of the …

Greenwashing: Visual Communication And Political Influence In Environmental Policy, Eric Jeffrey Jenner Jan 2005

Greenwashing: Visual Communication And Political Influence In Environmental Policy, Eric Jeffrey Jenner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Some contemporary theories in political science maintain that public lobbying is merely an expression of latent and resolute public opinion that is communicated to policymakers. Other theories contend that the public is highly manipulable and that public lobbying by extension can be considered a form of strategic framing that takes place through the news and paid media. Both theoretical approaches specify a function for words or text but are silent on the influence of photographs or images. In this dissertation, I hypothesize that environmental public lobbying operates as strategic framing and that text and photographs have unique and discrete effects …

Simulation Activity Diagrams, John Ryan, Cathal Heavey

Conference papers

This paper presents a technique, Simulation Activity Diagrams (SAD), developed to lessen the modelling burden during the initial requirements gathering phases of a simulation project. The technique also allows the capture and visual communication of detailed information, to manufacturing personnel, which may otherwise be lost in detailed programming code.

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau May 1987

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau

Theses

When I first thought about my thesis topic at the end of last year, I had a very different concept from what eventually developed into this project. My original intention, that of using the computer as an educational tool in the ethical and social development of primary school children, has remained the same. The changes occurred in my methods of achieving this intention. My rationale for promoting the computer as an educational resource is manifold. For example, the world that these children will be entering as adults will be entirely computerized and automated. This next generation must have more than …

Possible Pictorial Messages For Communication With Extraterrestrial Intelligences, Douglas Vakoch Jan 1978

Possible Pictorial Messages For Communication With Extraterrestrial Intelligences, Douglas Vakoch

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

If we want to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligences, we must encode information we wish to transmit. I have designed some messages which could be sent to other intelligences. There are three possible message types: linguistic, formalized (like computer languages) and pictorial. I chose to study pictorial. I limited my investigation to two-dimensional messages. By using a square format with prime numbers as the lengths of sides, the decoding process would be made easier. Like the prime number, square format, the use of a group of pulses as a name for the object shown in the picture had previously been suggested. …
