Micro Enterprise, Development, And The Future Of Women In Lesser-Developed Countries And The United States, Anna Nibley, Dr. Lamond Tullis
Micro Enterprise, Development, And The Future Of Women In Lesser-Developed Countries And The United States, Anna Nibley, Dr. Lamond Tullis
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction: The problem of development and economic disparity does not reside solely in Lesser-developed Countries (LDCs). Micro-credit is at work in forty-three countries, including the United States (New York Times 1997, 8). In the United States, a majority of the country’s poor reside in slums and low-income housing projects. Most of these people do not own the land on which they reside or the apartment or house in which they live and many are dependent on welfare. Because of these factors, many poor people cannot receive loans from traditional lending institutions. Recently, however, organizations like Accion International, a micro lending …

Extrauterine growth, or growth outside the womb following birth, is a serious challenge and concern in premature neonates. Preterm infants have low birth weights simply because they have not reached full growth and development at the time of birth.

Waging The Moral Equivalent Of War: The Political Conditions For Alternative Fuel Reform In The United States And Brazil, Logan Richards Clark, Dr. Kirk Hawkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Energy often plays a central role in both domestic and international conflict. Many scholars, activists and policymakers agree that the environmental, economic, and political costs of the United States’ self-proclaimed “addiction” to oil for its use as transportation fuel, among other functions, are unsustainable, even dangerous. They assert that the industrialized world’s dependence on fossil fuels is perpetuating global warming, leading us to a world wide economic “peak-oil” shock, and setting up massive geopolitical struggles across the globe. If the global community is to avert the potential calamity that a continued dependence on unsustainable energy may incur, a wide-scale effort …

How About The Real Responders' Perceptions? A Comparative Case Study On School Principals' Perceptions Of School Administration Through Metaphors In Usa And Turkey, Ibrahim H. Karatas, Harun Parpucu
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Expectations of school administration changed dramatically over the course of the 20th century. Today, the roles and responsibilities of school administrators must be re-defined for success in the 21st century. The current research aimed at revealing the perception of school leadership by school administrators who were expected to cope with problems and enable students to succeed in the U.S. and Turkey. Comparative case study design was used to analyze and compare the U.S. and Turkey school administrators’ perceptions of school leadership through metaphors. The study sample consisted of 47 school administrators employed in K-12 schools in Turkey and the U.S. …

Population Aging As The Social Body In Representation And Real Life, Alexandra Crampton
Population Aging As The Social Body In Representation And Real Life, Alexandra Crampton
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
This article uses three levels of body analysis as presented by Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Margaret Lock to compare old age as a construct in population aging discourse with research on lived experience of people aging in the United States and Ghana. I first describe how demographers construct social bodies as becoming “gray” through population statistics and how policy makers then use dependency ratios to rationalize intervention on behalf of older adults in the body-politic. The construction of old age within this discourse is then compared with ethnographic research that suggests this construct leaves out much of the lived experience familiar …

Sisters And Sorelle: A Comparative Analysis Of The Women’S Movement In Italy And The United States, Erin K. Knutson, Dr. Rebecca De Schweinitz

Feminism is a global phenomenon but not a monolith. Its goal of a more liberated, self-directed existence for women is common, but the methods employed to make this a reality vary among cultures and individuals. The United States, though full of radical feminist activity, has no hegemony on feminism. Italian feminism, along with other feminisms, have “fallen victim to a kind of cultural imperialism”. Though certainly influenced by the United States’ version of feminism, Italian feminism “nevertheless remains distinctly Italian”. Placing feminism in a global context allows for exploration of common tactics utilized by women across cultures and exposes strategies …
Ambivalent Sexism And The Law: The Myth Of Gender Equality, Jennifer Edgley, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki
Ambivalent Sexism And The Law: The Myth Of Gender Equality, Jennifer Edgley, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The women’s liberation movement of the sixties and seventies has ushered in several important social and political changes in the United States. Gender inequality, however, remains an enduring problem in various institutions (Lips, 2007). The theory of Ambivalent Sexism conceptualizes and may be the key to understanding the residual occurrences of gender inequality within social institutions. Theorists Glick and Fiske (1996) believe that prejudice, though traditionally considered to be antipathy towards a certain group (Allport, 1954), can contain both positive and negative features. They contend that sexism is not simply hostility towards women, but also subjectively positive behavior toward women. …
A Theatrical Exploration Of Immigration In The United States, Matthew Greene, Dr. Wade Hollingshaus
A Theatrical Exploration Of Immigration In The United States, Matthew Greene, Dr. Wade Hollingshaus
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of my ORCA project was to create a piece of theatre centering on the issue of immigration in the United States. I wrote in my proposal: “Illegal immigration is a significant issue in the current political, economic, and social arenas. In exploring this issue through theatre we can help bring the immediacy of the border situation closer to our audience.” The project ultimately did accomplish this goal but did so in a manner somewhat unexpected.

A History Of The Lara Family: Their Life In Mexico And Their Exodus To The United States, Jennifer M. Derby, Dr. Douglas Weatherford
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Office of Research and Creative Activities funded research into the history of my family and their experiences as Mexican-Americans. I was able to investigate what life in Mexico was like for my great-grandparents and their children. Through investigating the manner in which they lived, I was able to understand the reasons for their exodus to the United States. They fled from Mexico to the United States in 1927 while the Cristero Revolt raged in their small city. I was able to discover how this revolt affected their lives in Mexico, how their journey to the United States was accomplished, …

A Look At The Changes In Public Awareness Of Aids In The United States From 1987-1994, Kimberly Barlow-Miller, Dr. Ray Merrill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1980-81, five homosexual men in California were found to have a strain of pneumonia normally found only in the suppressed immune systems of the elderly. They were later diagnosed with the first cases of a rare and new disease known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This event has brought about a greater awareness of the AIDS disease among the population of the United States, as evidenced in the results of the AIDS supplement sections of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 1987 to 1994. Using questions asked of a representative sample of the US population, our research …
