A New Approach To Probabilistic Lava Flow Hazard Assessments, Applied To The Idaho National Laboratory, Eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho, Usa, Elisabeth Gallant, Jacob Richardson, Charles Connor, Paul Wetmore, Laura Connor
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
We present a new probabilistic lava flow hazard assessment for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) nuclear facility that (1) explores the way eruptions are defined and modeled, (2) stochastically samples lava flow parameters from observed values for use in MOLASSES, a lava flow simulator, (3) calculates the likelihood of a new vent opening within the boundaries of INL, (4) determines probabilities of lava flow inundation for INL through Monte Carlo simulation, and (5) couples inundation probabilities with recurrence rates to determine the annual likelihood of lava flow inundation for INL. Results show a 30% probability of …

The Relationship Between Millennials' Attitudes Towards The United States And Their Goals And Personal Constructs, Angelica M. Hernandez
The Relationship Between Millennials' Attitudes Towards The United States And Their Goals And Personal Constructs, Angelica M. Hernandez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine various aspects of Millennials' attitudes related to their beliefs about the United States and in the context of their personal, career, and family goals and ethnic identity. Another purpose of this study was to determine if selected personality variables would predict attitudes toward the United States. It was found that Millennials who held positive attitudes toward the United States in terms of being a viable country for them also had relatively clear and developed personal, career, and family goals. Moreover, three personality variables—resiliency, optimism, and (inversely) cynicism significantly contributed to Millennials' views …

Bankruptcy Law—Rethinking The Discharge Of Late Filed Taxes In Consumer Bankruptcy, Justin H. Dion, Barbara Curatolo
Bankruptcy Law—Rethinking The Discharge Of Late Filed Taxes In Consumer Bankruptcy, Justin H. Dion, Barbara Curatolo
Faculty Scholarship
The 2005 amendments to the Bankruptcy Code, Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) was enacted in order to improve bankruptcy law. However, BAPCPA has made the issue of whether late-filed taxes are dischargeable even murkier than before the amendments. After BAPCPA, some courts continued to analyze claims as they had before the amendment. Others used a “one-day-late rule” that prevented late-filed taxes from being dischargeable—even if the taxes were filed only one day late. This Article suggests a different approach. It argues that the legislature intended tax debt associated with late-filed income tax returns be dischargeable if the …

Exploring The Role Of Mirna-204 In Low Milk Supply, Clare Elizabeth Burton
Exploring The Role Of Mirna-204 In Low Milk Supply, Clare Elizabeth Burton
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Breastfeeding is the optimal method for mothers to deliver nutrients to her newborn(s), providing both short- and long-term health benefits. Unfortunately, only 24% of infants receive exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, as recommended by the World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics, with the most often cited reason for this being “low milk supply”. Low Milk Supply (LMS) is a real and growing problem in the United States, with at least 5-10% (approximately 200,000) mothers experiencing LMS in the US each year. We previously observed temporal expression of miR-204 during normal mammary gland development, which led us …
The Flying Tigers: Transnational Memories Of A World War Ii Collaboration, Kaho Yasuda
The Flying Tigers: Transnational Memories Of A World War Ii Collaboration, Kaho Yasuda
Honors Papers
In 1941, under the leadership of General Claire Lee Chennault, the Flying Tigers- a volunteer group of fighter pilots and crewmen from the United States- traveled to Southwestern China to support the Chinese Nationalist military in their resistance against the Japanese. How do the United States and China remember the Flying Tigers, and how is the memory shaped by domestic and international politics? Drawing from media coverage, museums, popular media, and memoirs, this thesis traces the evolution of the memories of the Flying Tigers in the U.S. and China from 1941 to the present. I argue that from the war …
La Vie En Périphérie : Une Comparaison Critique De La Représentation Des Populations Marginalisées Et Le Racisme Systématique Aux Etats-Unis Et À La Banlieue Du Paris, Milan Essex
Honors Theses

Provenance Analysis Of The Ochoco Basin, Central Oregon: A Window Into The Late Cretaceous Paleogeography Of The Northern U.S. Cordillera, Kathleen D. Surpless, Kirk D. H Gulliver
Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research
Cretaceous forearc strata of the Ochoco basin in central Oregon may preserve a record of regional transpression, magmatism, and mountain building within the Late Cretaceous Cordillera. Given the volume of material that must have been eroded from the Sierra Nevada and Idaho batholith to result in modern exposures of mid- and deep-crustal rocks, Cretaceous forearc basins have the potential to preserve a record of arc magmatism no longer preserved within the arc, if forearc sediment can be confidently linked to sources. Paleogeographic models for mid-Cretaceous time indicate that the Blue Mountains and the Ochoco sedimentary overlap succession experienced postdepositional, coast-parallel, …

Anzus And The Early Cold War: Strategy And Diplomacy Between Australia, New Zealand And The United States, 1945-1956, Andrew Kelly
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The ANZUS Alliance was a defence arrangement between Australia, New Zealand and the United States that shaped international policy in the aftermath of the Second World War and the early stages of the Cold War. Forged by influential individuals and impacting on global events including the Japanese Peace Treaty, the Korean War and the Suez Crisis, the ANZUS Alliance was a crucial factor in the seismic changes that took place in the second half of the twentieth century.
In this compact and accessible study, Andrew Kelly lays out the tensions that underpinned the formation of the Alliance, as each power …

Shrinking Budgets, Growing Demands: Neoliberalism And Academic Identity Tension At Regional Public Universities, Daryl Dugas, Kelly H. Summers, Lindsay N. Harris, Amy E. Stich
CISLL Publications
Faculty (N = 156) at regional public universities (RPUs) in the United States were surveyed for self-reports of their primary academic identity (teacher, researcher) along with alignment of that identity with perceived departmental expectations and how their time is spent. Well-being and job satisfaction were examined as outcome measures of identity and alignment. The results are examined in the context of international concerns about neoliberalism in higher education, particularly with respect to academic identity. Participants were employed by RPUs in Illinois, a state with severe budget challenges, to assess the combined impact of neoliberalism and financial pressures on academic identity …

Immigration Law—This Land Is My Land, Or Is It?: Statutes Of Limitation Within The Context Of The Immigration And Nationality Act, Lisa Marquardt
Western New England Law Review
This Article proposes a unique perspective on the problem of the undocumented population within the borders of the United States. It seeks to reframe the immigration discussion from one that maligns the undocumented as criminals to one that identifies them as simple trespassers who are entitled to a defense based on a statute of limitations. The Author’s point of view is from her experience as an immigration law and criminal defense practitioner.
U.S. Manufacturing Sector Strategies For Effective Offshoring To China, Timothy Byron Klatte
U.S. Manufacturing Sector Strategies For Effective Offshoring To China, Timothy Byron Klatte
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
U.S. manufacturing companies' offshoring of investments to China over the past 4 decades before 2017 has played a significant role in China's economic growth. However, as China's economy expands and the country's standard of living improves, U.S. manufacturing executives are required to take a refreshed look at current investment strategies to adjust for rising costs and a tighter regulatory environment. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore economic strategies that U.S. manufacturing leaders used to offshore effectively to China. The study included in-person interviews of 9 purposeful sampled manufacturing leaders, fluent in English, from 2 U.S. organizations …

Undergraduate Music Theory Terminology Used By Selected Spanish-Speaking Instructors In Chile: Development, Similarities, And Limitations, Enrique Sandoval-Cisternas
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Six Chilean music theory instructors participated in an anonymous survey applied over an online platform between April and October of 2017. These instructors were invited to participate in this study because of their role in teaching music theory at influential institutions, each of which is ranked among the top ten best universities in Chile. The questions included in the survey relate to the terminology used to refer to music elements upon which current American music theory textbooks consistently agree, and that are usually taught during the first two years of undergraduate studies in accredited American music schools: types of cadences, …
Review Of United States Abortion Policy, Allison Guenther
Review Of United States Abortion Policy, Allison Guenther
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The ruling of Roe v. Wade was a key point in the establishment of abortion policy in the United States, sparking controversy that is still prevalent politically and socially. Prior to Roe v. Wade, abortion was banned throughout the majority of the United States with very few exceptions. In the years since this historical ruling, civilians and politicians have taken sides over what abortion policies are morally and ethically correct. Pro-life and pro-choice activists have spent over 40 years competing for their ideology to be reflected in policy. The efforts by either movement have impacted United States’ economics and …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wild-bird origin influenza A viruses (IAVs or avian influenza) have led to sporadic outbreaks among domestic poultry in the United States and Canada, resulting in economic losses through the implementation of costly containment practices and destruction of birds. We used evolutionary analyses of virus sequence data to determine that 78 H5 low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs) isolated from domestic poultry in the United States and Canada during 2001 to 2017 resulted from 18 independent virus introductions from wild birds. Within the wild-bird reservoir, the hemagglutinin gene segments of H5 LPAIVs exist primarily as two cocirculating genetic sublineages, and our findings …
