Importance: Although previous work has examined clinical outcomes in combat-deployed veterans, questions remain regarding how symptoms evolve or resolve following mild blast traumatic brain injury (TBI) treated in theater and their association with long-term outcomes.
Objective: To characterize 5-year outcome in patients with nonmedically evacuated blast concussion compared with combat-deployed controls and understand what clinical measures collected acutely in theater are associated with 5-year outcome.
Design, Setting, and Participants: A prospective, longitudinal cohort study including 45 service members with mild blast TBI within 7 days of injury (mean 4 days) and 45 combat deployed nonconcussed controls was carried out. Enrollment …

Canadian Paramedic Program Use Of Realistic Simulation In Education (Purse): A Descriptive Study., C William Johnston, Alan M. Batt
Canadian Paramedic Program Use Of Realistic Simulation In Education (Purse): A Descriptive Study., C William Johnston, Alan M. Batt
Faculty & Staff Publications - Public Safety
Background: Literature suggests that simulation-based learning is an important modality in medical education. Although there is a large body of evidence in other medical fields, there has been little reported evidence of simulation use in paramedic education. This study aimed to report patterns of simulation use in paramedic programs across Canada.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of Primary Care and Advanced Care paramedic programs across Canada. An online questionnaire was distribution to all identified paramedic program coordinators in Canada.
Results: Of the 44 invitations sent, 20 complete responses (45%) were received and analyzed. Paramedic programs reported they own or …

The Association Between Urinary Genistein Levels And Mortality Among Adults In The United States, Carolyn Marcelo, Melissa Warwick, Catherine Marcelo, Rehan Qayyum
Internal Medicine Publications
Background
Current research on the relationship between phytoestrogens and mortality has been inconclusive. We explored the relationship between genistein, a phytoestrogen, and mortality in a large cohort representative of the United States population.
Methods: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999–2010. Normalized urinary genistein (nUG) was analyzed as a log-transformed continuous variable and in quartiles. Mortality data were obtained from the National Death Index and matched to the NHANES participants. Survival analyses were conducted using the Kaplan-Meier analysis. Cox proportional hazard models were constructed for all-cause and cause-specific mortality without and with …

The Implementation And Effects Of Computerized Physician Order Entry In Healthcare Settings, Bojing Wang, Xiaoying Liu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: In the United States, medication errors has been a big problem and was the number three cause of death in 2016. Computerize Physician Order Entry (CPOE), also known as Computerized Provider Order Entry, is the process of physicians or providers entering treatment instructions or radiology, laboratory, and medication orders via computer rather than paper, and has led to a decrease in medication errors. The purpose of this study was to examine whether CPOE system could help hospitals to reduce medical errors and costs, as well as examine the new problems resulted by the use of CPOE in the …

Photography
100 unnumbered pages : illustrations (some color). Inserted are two small photograph reproductions and one pamphlet First hardcover edition of 165. Design and cover production by Shawn Bush. Printed in Milwaukee, WI by The Fox Co. "At No Point In Between prompts inquiry into the antinomy that exists in recorded violence: how documentation of anti-black violence was used to shame black individuals, but how we have used those same images inversely to interrupt the collective belief of a racial hierarchy. Murff accomplishes this by challenging the photographs use as an objective document; addressing the convergence of the physical and social …

Were It Not For, Michael Ashkin, Special Collections, Fleet Library
Photography
256 unnumbered pages : chiefly illustrations. "Michael Ashkin works across a range of media--painting, photography, sculpture, video, and text. Uniting these diverse practices is a conceptual focus on the way that notions of space and place, landscape and self, are shaped by wider political and economic forces. "Were it not for" is combining a 670-line text with 218 photographs of the Mojave Desert. This combination creates a powerful sense of unease throughout the document, which is exploring the idea of fear and haunting as an effect of the violent legacies contained within the landscape, and as a function of the …

E-Cigarettes: Perceived Harm Among Youth In The United States, Sherbert Samuels
Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Studies have shown e-cigarette use surged among youth, but there is limited literature about how youth perceived the harm of these products. In this dissertation study, perceived harm of e-cigarettes and e-cigarette use over time among youth in the United States was explored. The dissertation study also included assessment of associations between perceived harm and susceptibility to e-cigarette use. A subset of data from Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, a national longitudinal study, was utilized. The PATH study used a questionnaire to capture self-reported data from non-institutionalized participants. Data from …
Design Thinking And Methods In Library Practice And Graduate Library Education, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Ann Rosenblad, Satyen Amonkar
Design Thinking And Methods In Library Practice And Graduate Library Education, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Ann Rosenblad, Satyen Amonkar
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Despite interest in the application of design thinking and methods in librarianship, there seems to be a disconnect between application and education to support it. This study used an online
questionnaire to elicit feedback from library workers in the United States about interest in and use of design thinking and methods in library practice, and the need for design skills and abilities in library education. We found that practicing librarians perceive the relevance of design thinking and methods to library work, although opinions vary based on library and work type. Design thinking and methods were used mostly for space planning …

A Policy Mechanism For Federal Recommendation Of Security Standards For Mobile Devices That Conduct Transactions, Ariel Huckabay
A Policy Mechanism For Federal Recommendation Of Security Standards For Mobile Devices That Conduct Transactions, Ariel Huckabay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The proliferation of mobile devices in the BRIC countries has prompted them to develop policies to manage the security of these devices. In China, mobile devices are a primary tool for payments. As a result, China instituted in 2017 a cyber security policy that applies to mobile devices giving China broad authority to manage cyber threats. The United States has a similar need for a cyber policy. Mobile devices are likely to become a primary payment tool in the United States soon. DHS has also identified a need for more effective security policy in mobile devices for government operations. This …
The Difference In Design: Participatory Budgeting In Brazil And The United States, Hollie Russon Gilman, Brian Wampler
The Difference In Design: Participatory Budgeting In Brazil And The United States, Hollie Russon Gilman, Brian Wampler
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is conceptually powerful because it ties the normative values of non-elite participation and deliberation to specific policymaking processes. It is a democratic policymaking process that enables citizens to allocate public monies. PB has spread globally, coming to the United States in 2009. Our analysis shows that the types of institutional designs used in the United States are quite different from the original Brazilian programs. What explains the variation in PB institutional design between Brazil and the United States? Most PB cases in the US are district-level whereas in Brazil, PB cases are mainly municipal. We account for …
