Restraints In Massachusetts Public Schools, Elyce Hall May 2020

Restraints In Massachusetts Public Schools, Elyce Hall

Master’s Theses and Projects

The purpose of this research study was to investigate the moral and legal issues around physically restraining students in Massachusetts public schools. As Massachusetts law is written, the use of restraints on a student should be the last possible resort. However, this thesis used data on restraint use from the Massachusetts Department of Education and a survey of school administrators to gain a better understanding of the 38,994 student restraints that were used in 2016-2017 school year. Findings of this study include that Hispanic and African-American students were more likely to attend schools that used restraints than those that did …

“Well, I’Ve Whispered ‘Racism’ In A Post-Racial World”: Satire And The Absurdity Of “Post-Racial” America, Joseph Gorman May 2020

“Well, I’Ve Whispered ‘Racism’ In A Post-Racial World”: Satire And The Absurdity Of “Post-Racial” America, Joseph Gorman

Master’s Theses and Projects

The purpose of this thesis project is to look at the works of contemporary African American satirists as they confront post-racial ideology. In looking at the works of Jordan Peele, Paul Beatty, Mat Johnson, and Boots Riley, thematic threads emerge to form a portrait of dire unrest amongst those non-white identities living in an allegedly post-racial world. Before analyzing the works, I first contextualize the thesis with a brief discussion of satire as a literary genre and African American satire as a literary subgenre, as well as address the emergence of post-racial ideology during the tenure of Barack Obama as …

Capital Gains Tax Law And Policy In The U.S. And China: A Comparative Study, Chen Ye May 2020

Capital Gains Tax Law And Policy In The U.S. And China: A Comparative Study, Chen Ye

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides a review of tax theories, laws, and policies of the U.S. and China on taxing capital gains. Based on the review, I draw a comparative analysis of the two countries’ laws and policies and prescribe legislative options for taxing capital gains under the individual income tax law in China.

The dissertation contributes to both the Chinese literature and the U.S. literature: For China, this research takes upon an overlooked yet increasingly important issue in China’s individual income tax—the taxation of capital gains. Though the 2018 Individual Income Tax Law brought significant changes to the classification of individual …

Background: Stigma is the deleterious, structural force that devalues members of groups that hold undesirable characteristics. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess if there was an increase in the prevalence and frequency of the phrases "Chinese virus" and "China virus" on Twitter after the March 16, 2020, US presidential reference of this term.

Methods: Using the Sysomos software (Sysomos, Inc), we extracted tweets from the United …

Oral Health-Related Quality Of Life In Us Adults With Type 2 Diabetes., Giang Truong Vu

This dissertation focused on the relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and the factors associated with this relationship in the US. The objectives of the dissertation research were a three-part process: (1) to understand the relationships of T2DM with poor OHRQoL, clarify risk and preventive factors that affect this association, and identify research gaps in the literature, (2) to analyze risk factors associated with poor OHRQoL in US adults with T2DM using a nationally representative random probability cluster sample, and (3) to apply structural equation modeling (SEM) to a simplified Andersen’s Behavioral Model …

Establishment Of Chinese Medicine Practice In San Antonio, Texas, Chloe Kristina Sonnier

Sociology and Anthropology Honors Theses

This thesis sets out to interrogate the establishment of traditional Chinese medicine practice in San Antonio, Texas. I have chosen to focus on two practitioners in particular who can be considered founders of Chinese medicine practice in San Antonio and in Texas as a whole. These practitioners, Dr. Chang and Dr. Ho, are the only remaining of an estimated five total practitioners that practiced in San Antonio in the 1970’s and 1980’s before acupuncture became a licensed profession in Texas. This thesis will follow the history of these two practitioners, detailing their separate roles in the establishment of Chinese medicine …

Similar Interpretations, Different Conclusions: The Criminalization Of Hate Speech In The West, Michael Goryelov, Wesley S. Mccann

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The United States is unique internationally in that hate speech is not considered a criminal offense. Drawing from a sample of Western countries and their respective statutes, the analysis will look at different nations' interpretations of hate speech criminality. This study identifies common patterns in international criminal legal codes and compares them to U.S. jurisprudence, focusing on content neutrality and the ideological content of these laws. It was found that hate speech statutes internationally tended towards content neutrality, were structured similarly to anti-defamatory codes, and generally did not result in amendments/extensions of new regulatory laws. These findings imply a closer …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric illnesses, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) of CDC's Emerging Infections Program monitors the incidence of laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites.* This report summarizes preliminary 2019 data and describes changes in incidence compared with that during 2016-2018. The incidence of enteric infections caused by these eight pathogens reported by FoodNet sites in 2019 continued to increase or remained unchanged, indicating progress in controlling major foodborne pathogens in the United States has stalled. Campylobacter and Salmonella caused the largest proportion of illnesses; trends in …

The authors explored the association between exercise and poor mental health reported by LGB adults in the United States. Methods: Our analyses used data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine the association between exercising and mental health days adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Data …

Fintech Regulations In The United States Compared To Regulations In Europe And Asia, Victoria Williams

Honors College Theses

In Europe and Asia, there has been a lot of innovation, and lawmakers have been forced to keep up with regulating the rapidly growing industry. However, the United States has not risen to the occasion of properly regulating this industry and can learn from countries in Europe and Asia on how to effectively regulate fintech. This essay explains generally what fintech is, why it must be properly regulated, how countries in Europe and Asia regulate it, and how …

Principal Support Of Inclusive Educational Practices: A Multi-Case Study, Muri Howle

All Dissertations

There are numerous pieces of legislation in the United States that mandate all students (e.g. English as a Second or Other Language/ESOL students, special education students, gifted students, and 504 Accommodation Plan students) are included in the general education classroom as much as is appropriate based on each student’s strengths and needs. Legislation such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Lau v. Nichols (1974), and the Every Student Succeeds Act and their impact on the equity for all students in general education classrooms are discussed. According to available research, principal …

Requisitioned: American War Art Of The Second World War, Spenser Carroll-Johnson May 2020

Requisitioned: American War Art Of The Second World War, Spenser Carroll-Johnson

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

The United States requisitioned artists to assist with military objectives and servicemen requisitioned art as a form of rhetoric. This research reexamines the role of “official artists” and thereby extends its definition to include the multitude of art they produced during the Second World War. The underpinnings of this thesis reside during the economic crises of the 1930s that brought about American emergency relief initiatives for artists under the direction of Holger Cahill and, by extension, Edward Bruce. For the first time in history, the American public engaged with state-sponsored art. Due to a symbiotic relationship that formed between the …
