Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Multilevel Intervention To Address Social Determinants Of Refugee Mental Health, Jessica R. Goodkind, Deborah Bybee, Julia Meredith Hess, Suha Amer, Martin Ndayisenga, R Neil Greene, Ryeora Choe, Brian Isakson, Brandon Baca, Mahbooba Pannah
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Understanding processes that support the well-being of the unprecedented numbers of forcibly displaced people throughout the world is essential. Growing evidence documents post-migration stressors related to marginalization as key social determinants of refugee mental health. The goal of this RCT was to rigorously test a social justice approach to reducing high rates of distress among refugees in the United States. The 6-month multilevel, strengths-based Refugee Well-being Project (RWP) intervention brought together university students enrolled in a 2-semester course and recently resettled refugees to engage in mutual learning and collaborative efforts to mobilize community resources and improve community and systems responsiveness …

Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoffs: A Warning From The Laboratory, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Richard A. Marlar, Andrew J. Goodwin
Pathology Research and Scholarship
D-dimer assays have been Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved or cleared for results below a manufacturer-defined cutoff in conjunction with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability to rule out venous thromboembolism.1 Given apparent overall increase of D-dimer level with age, clinical guidelines have recommended application of an age-adjusted D-dimer–level cutoff to exclude suspected pulmonary embolus specifically in patients with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability.2,3 Despite additional studies and literature availble, these guidelines themselves rest solely on the Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoff Levels to Rule Out Pulmonary Embolism: The ADJUST-PE Study,4 applying an age-adjusted D-dimer–level …
From Näfels To The United States: Emigrant Portraits From A Town In Switzerland’S Canton Glarus, Susanne Peter-Kubli
From Näfels To The United States: Emigrant Portraits From A Town In Switzerland’S Canton Glarus, Susanne Peter-Kubli
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Only a few, and mainly quite confusing, details are available about Feldmann’s life in Näfels and also about the date of his emigration. It derives, in part, from the fact that two people by the same name were living in Näfels. Both were butchers by profession and both had married women by the last name Müller. Checking the marriage and baptismal records of Näfels finally clarified the matter.

Stuck In Neutral? Federalism, Policy Instruments, And Counter-Cyclical Responses To Covid-19 In The United States, Philip Rocco, Daniel Beland, Alex Waddan
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
Federalism plays a foundational role in structuring public expectations about how the United States will respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, as both an unprecedented public-health crisis and an economic recession. As in prior crises, state governments are expected to be primary sites of governing authority, especially when it comes to immediate public-health needs, while it is assumed that the federal government will supply critical counter-cyclical measures to stabilize the economy and make up for major revenue shortfalls in the states. Yet there are reasons to believe that these expectations will not be fulfilled, especially when it comes to the critical …

Walking and biking to school represent a source of regular daily physical activity (PA). The objectives of this paper are to determine the associations of distance to school, crime safety, and socioeconomic variables with active school transport (AST) among children from five culturally and socioeconomically different country sites and to describe the main policies related to AST in those country sites. The analytical sample included 2845 children aged 9-11 years from the International Study of Childhood Obesity, Lifestyle and the Environment. Multilevel generalized linear mixed models were used to estimate the associations between distance, safety and socioeconomic variables, and the …

Shadow Standards And The Logic Of Costs: Care, Stewardship, And Data In U.S. Community Health, Margarite J. Whitten
Shadow Standards And The Logic Of Costs: Care, Stewardship, And Data In U.S. Community Health, Margarite J. Whitten
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the delegation of responsibility for providing health care to particular categories of marginalized populations in the United States in the absence of a uniform and universal health care system. It explores how the U.S. federal government governs patient populations at a distance by mandating that healthcare providers collect, produce, and report on patient data. Drawing from eighteen months of ethnographic research in Massachusetts clinics for the homeless and the frail elderly between 2014-2015, I argue that when marginalized patients are unable to satisfy the neoliberal ideal of self-governance to maintain their health in cost-effective ways, providers are …

Dear Black Child: A Discussion On The Formation Of Identity For African Diasporic Adolescents In The U.S., Sokhnagade B. Ndiaye
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this capstone project, I am using art, photography, and music to depict the experiences of African diasporic youth in the United States. I will explore the white supremacist systems that contribute to the anxiety that comes with being a black child in America. In this project, I plan to discuss the ways in which African diasporic adolescents develop their identity and consciousness and the ways in which living in American society helps and/or hinders the development of this identity and consciousness. I argue that living in the United States forces black youth to form double and triple consciousnesses, which …
The Influence Of Social Media On Murder, Brandy Jones
The Influence Of Social Media On Murder, Brandy Jones
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This research contains information on how much or if at all social media influences murder. Social media has such a big impact on the lives of many around the world, it is almost impossible to avoid. There is research on how social media effects brain processes and may even cause addiction. And there is research on why people commit murder, but there is little to no research on the role social media can play in some murders. Social media is almost like an alternate universe where people can pretend to be the people they want to be in real life, …

Fomc Playbook: The Only New Game In Town?, Thomas Lam
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), while taking more aggressive actions, seems to have stuck more or less to the standard playbook of responding to “unusual and exigent circumstances”. This essentially calls for slashing conventional policy rates to their effective lower bound, accompanied by forward guidance, embarking on asset purchases, rolling out emergency liquidity facilities and experimenting with lending programmes. But policymakers, with the required US Treasury backstop, have also introduced more creative programmes to encourage credit extension and reached into different market segments.

The Relationship Of Span Of Control To Nurse Manager Satisfaction, Jeffrey Batcher
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between span of control (SOC) and nurse manager job satisfaction for nurse managers working in a hospital system. The study may help administrators identify how wide and narrow SOC correlates to the overall job satisfaction of nurse managers.
Design: A non-experimental descriptive correlational study design was used.
Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of nurse managers working within an eleven-hospital healthcare system. Survey Monkey was used for data collection and included a demographic questionnaire, The Ottawa Hospital Model of Nursing Clinical Practice (TOH MoNCP) Clinical Management Span …

Insider Trading Framework In United States And Egyptian Stock Markets, Elsayed Eldaydamony
The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law
This article examines the law of insider trading in both the American and Egyptian legal systems. It seeks to pinpoint the policy rationale behind prohibiting insider trading, the theories of civil enforcement and criminalization, and the concept of tipping in the United States. It also analyzes the express statutory prohibition under Egyptian law. Furthermore, it explains the doctrinal link between securities fraud and insider trading in the U.S. as well as the enforcement mechanisms in place at the SEC, the NYSE, and the NASDAQ. It also surveys the surveillance authority of the Egyptian Financial Regularity Authority and of the Egyptian …
