Understanding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Among Haitian American Women: A Cultural Perspective, Balkys L. Bivins, Indra R Hershorin, Lonar M. Umadhay
Faculty Articles
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is 19.7% in Haiti (DeGennaro et al., 2018). Haitian American women (HAW) experience difficulties with adherence to T2DM treatment and management (Bivins, 2016; Magny-Normilus et al., 2019; Vimalananda et al., 2011; Huffman et al., 2013); however, no previous study was found that focused exclusively on Haitian American women with T2DM. Van Manen's six research activities guided this phenomenological qualitative inquiry. Recruitment included 25 Haitian American women (N = 25) with T2DM from three South Florida counties. Data were collected using a vignette and audio-recorded semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. Recordings were then …
Children's Ombudspersons In The United States, Brian Gran Phd
Children's Ombudspersons In The United States, Brian Gran Phd
Societies Without Borders
In the one country whose national government has failed to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, offices of children’s ombudspersons have been established across the United States. This essay will describe these offices, their work and independence, and how strengthening these offices will lead to stronger enforcement of children’s rights. This essay will follow up on a proposal Howard Davidson of the American Bar Association made to establish a national office of children’s ombudsperson for the United States.
The Changing Face Of Terrorism And The Designation Of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, Patrick J. Keenan
The Changing Face Of Terrorism And The Designation Of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, Patrick J. Keenan
Indiana Law Journal
In this Article, I take up one slice of what should be a broad re-examination of
U.S. law and policy. I argue that the new attacks have been undertaken by entities
that can and should be designated as foreign terrorist organizations. Doing this would
permit prosecutors to target those who support these entities with tools that are not
currently available. This Article is both a doctrinal argument that directly addresses
the many legal hurdles that make designating groups, such as foreign hackers and
troll farms, terrorist organizations a complicated endeavor, and a policy argument
about how U.S. law and policy …
Healthcare Licensing And Liability, Benjamin Mcmichael
Healthcare Licensing And Liability, Benjamin Mcmichael
Indiana Law Journal
The United States’ affordable care crisis and chronic physician shortage have
required advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants
(PAs) to assume increasingly important roles in the healthcare system. The increased
use of these nonphysician providers has improved access to healthcare and lowered
the price of care. However, restrictive occupational licensing laws—specifically,
scope-of-practice laws—have limited their ability to care for patients. While these
laws, by themselves, have important implications for the healthcare system, they also
interact with other legal regimes to impact the provision of care. Restrictive scopeof-
practice laws can increase the malpractice liability risk of physicians and …
Far-Right Extremism In America: A Geospatial Analysis Of Incident Distribution, Meredith Leann Lerma
Far-Right Extremism In America: A Geospatial Analysis Of Incident Distribution, Meredith Leann Lerma
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There has been little empirical research on the spatial relationship of violent far-right extremism. Previous studies have only focused on portions of far-right violent incidents, such as homicides, or amalgamated all far-right extremist activity, including legal incidents. This study uses data from the Extremist Crime Database (ECDB) and Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in a temporal frame of 2000 to 2018 to test the relationship of violent incidents against geographic and social factors. The goal is to explore the relationships between macro-level factors and violent far-right extremist incident. The research determines that the presence of hate groups, higher immigrant populations, …

The microRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression. In this study, we provide evidence for the first time to show that rickettsial pathogen Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection results in the down-regulation of tick microRNA-133 (miR-133), to induce Ixodes scapularis organic anion transporting polypeptide (isoatp4056) gene expression critical for this bacterial survival in the vector and for its transmission to the vertebrate host. Transfection studies with recombinant constructs containing transcriptional fusions confirmed binding of miR-133 to isoatp4056 mRNA. Treatment with miR-133 inhibitor resulted in increased bacterial burden and isoatp4056 expression in ticks and tick cells. In contrast, treatment with …

The health care system is an important factor for the well-being of the human population all around the world, and yet, health care can differ greatly depending on a variety of factors including location and culture. When referring to health care, it is appropriate to include skilled physicians, hospitals, care clinics, and medical equipment. Gun Violence And Advocacy Communication, Minhee Choi
Gun Violence And Advocacy Communication, Minhee Choi
Theses and Dissertations
Gun violence has been a major threat to the United States in recent decades. Through the concept of media advocacy from health communication and mass communication literature, this dissertation used an experiment with 331 respondents to test the strategic value of public health framing and certain types of mobilizing information on social media as part of the media advocacy process, including how those elements may lead to attitudinal and behavioral responses related to gun-related policies. Political orientation and gun ownership were examined as potential moderating factors that affect individuals’ perceptions of public health framing. Finding provide public health framing is …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Lack of health insurance coverage is associated with poor access and receipt of cancer care and survival in the United States. Disruptions in coverage are common among low-income populations, but little is known about associations of disruptions with cancer care, including prevention, screening, and treatment, as well as outcomes of stage at diagnosis and survival.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies of health insurance coverage disruptions and cancer care and outcomes published between 1980 and 2019. We used the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL databases and identified 29 observational studies. Study characteristics and key findings were abstracted …

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Universal vaccination at birth and in infancy is key to the elimination of chronic hepatitis B infection. We aimed to assess hepatitis B immune-prophylaxis and perinatal transmission knowledge, in a large and ethnically diverse cohort of previously pregnant North American women, chronically infected with hepatitis B.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Hepatitis B Research Network (HBRN) is comprised of 28 Clinical Centers in the United States and Canada. Female cohort participants were administered a questionnaire to assess: (1) their assertion of knowledge regarding HBV prophylaxis at birth, testing, and diagnosis of hepatitis B in their children, and (2) …
