Downstream Variation In Bankfull Width Of Wadeable Streams Across The Conterminous United States, John M. Faustini, Philip R. Kaufmann, Alan T. Herlihy Jan 2009

Downstream Variation In Bankfull Width Of Wadeable Streams Across The Conterminous United States, John M. Faustini, Philip R. Kaufmann, Alan T. Herlihy

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Bankfull channel width is a fundamental measure of stream size and a key parameter of interest for many applications in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and stream ecology. We developed downstream hydraulic geometry relationships for bankfull channel width w as a function of drainage area A, w=α Aβ, (DHGwA) for nine aggregate ecoregions comprising the conterminous United States using 1588 sites from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Wadeable Streams Assessment (WSA), including 1152 sites from a randomized probability survey sample. Sampled stream reaches ranged from 1 to 75 m in bankfull width and 1 to 10,000 km …

Combined Hydrous Ferric Oxide And Quaternary Ammonium Surfactant Tailoring Of Granular Activated Carbon For Concurrent Arsenate And Perchlorate Removal, M. Jang, F.S. Cannon, R.B. Parette, S.J. Yoon, W. Chen Jan 2009

Combined Hydrous Ferric Oxide And Quaternary Ammonium Surfactant Tailoring Of Granular Activated Carbon For Concurrent Arsenate And Perchlorate Removal, M. Jang, F.S. Cannon, R.B. Parette, S.J. Yoon, W. Chen

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Activated carbon was tailored with both iron and quaternary ammonium surfactants so as to concurrently remove both arsenate and perchlorate from groundwater. The iron (hydr)oxide preferentially removed the arsenate oxyanion but not perchlorate; while the quaternary ammonium preferentially removed the perchlorate oxyanion, but not the arsenate. The co-sorption of two anionic oxyanions via distinct mechanisms has yielded intriguing phenomena. Rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) with these dually prepared media employed synthetic waters that were concurrently spiked with arsenate and perchlorate; and these trial results showed that the quaternary ammonium surfactants enhanced arsenate removal bed life by 25-50 when compared to …

Why Has The United States Never Ratified The Un Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women?, Hannah Elizabeth Kington Jan 2009

Why Has The United States Never Ratified The Un Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women?, Hannah Elizabeth Kington

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted by the United Nations in 1979, has now been ratified by 185 countries, consisting of more than ninety percent of all UN members. The United States, however, has never ratified the Convention. The history of the Convention provides evidence of global support for women’s rights. While there are complex reasons behind the United States’ failure to ratify CEDAW, the United States’ commitment to unilateralism, an attitude of “American exceptionalism” and the long-term inequality and discrimination against women in the U.S. all contribute to the stifling of …

Whatever Happened To Anarchism?: Renaissance And Adaptation In Postwar America, Ryan Thompson Jan 2009

Whatever Happened To Anarchism?: Renaissance And Adaptation In Postwar America, Ryan Thompson

Theses & ETDs

This project is a multidisciplinary study of anarchism in the postwar United States.Though anarchism--the philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made law--had been declared obsolete in America in thought and movement by 1940 it would reemerge by the early 1960s. Anarchisms classical period--the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries--came with industrialization and modernity. Postwar anarchism evolved to another structural context: wealth, integration, centralization. The recovery of anarchism through historicization was contemporaneous with the renaissance. Paul Avrich was the exemplary chronicler of American anarchism. His research salvaged anarchism from distortion. The reassembly and continuity of anarchism …

Canada-United States Cooperative Approaches To Shared Marine Fishery Resources: Territorial Subversion?, Ted L. Mcdorman Jan 2009

Canada-United States Cooperative Approaches To Shared Marine Fishery Resources: Territorial Subversion?, Ted L. Mcdorman

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Essay will focus on how Canada and the United States have both succeeded and failed in adopting cooperative approaches to managing ocean fishery resources. A critical factor that has influenced these efforts is the introduction of an international legal construct dictating that States have exclusive sovereign rights respecting all marine living resources within 200 nautical miles of their shores. Cooperative approaches to managing transboundary marine living resources between Canada and the United States are necessary for two reasons. First, in the case of marine living resources, the resource pays scant attention to human-constructed national boundaries. Put another way, marine …

Questioning The Resort To U.S. Hegemonic Military Force, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 2009

Questioning The Resort To U.S. Hegemonic Military Force, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This paper seeks to defend the thesis that this American project of military hegemony has a variety of global security costs of such combined magnitude that there is a strong prima facie case against the resort to armed force by the United States, so that its wars might be wrong even when there is a just cause. My thesis is based on the jus ad bellum principle of proportionality.

Gpr Report, 2009 Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys Near Big Manhole Cave, Ron Lipinski, Carl Pagano, Steve Peerman

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

A set of brief Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys was made inside Big Manhole Cave (BMC) and over the entrance room on March 24-28, 2009 to determine the distinguishing features of a GPR image of a cave and to help determine whether passages might exist close to existing passages. This report summarizes the results. The chronological sequence of GPR measurements was 1) Floor of the entrance room (3/25/09), 2) Northeast dig branch at the bottom of the dig (from survey point W17 to W19) (3/26/09), 3) Southeast dig branch at the bottom of the dig (near survey point W23) (3/27/09) …

Implications Of Ifrs In The United States, Daniel Rehor

Honors Capstones

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is on a crash course for adoption in the United States, which uses United States GAAP. Many differences and disparities exist between the two accounting standards. The means of adoption in the United States is still under discussion, but the ramifications will be felt in many areas. Companies will have to prepare and make the necessary adjustments in their operations. The main research method used in my thesis was business magazines and other accounting websites. Due to the fact that this topic is relatively new, many books were not sufficient for my research. My faculty …

The Spinal Column-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation Jan 2009

The Spinal Column-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

The spinal cord is a part of a system called the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of two main structures — the brain and the spinal cord. The spinal cord is delicate tissue protected by spinal bones, which are called vertebrae. The spinal cord sits in a space through the center of the vertebrae called the spinal canal. The vertebrae are stacked one on top of another. The job of the vertebrae is to provide support and flexibility for the body and to protect the spinal cord. Discs separate the vertebrae. Discs are tough fibrous …

Bowel-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

Introduction

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) changes the way your body works, especially your bowels. After a spinal cord injury, bowel movements (or stool) require more time, thought and planning. Usually, people with SCI cannot feel when stool is ready to come out; therefore, their bowels need re-training.

Anatomy

What Is the Bowel, and What Does It Do?

The bowel is the last portion of your digestive tract and is sometimes called the large intestine or colon. The digestive tract as a whole is a hollow tube that extends from the mouth to the anus (see illustration below). The function of …

Respiratory-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

Introduction

Spinal cord injury can affect normal breathing. The level of your injury will determine the effect it will have. It can be different for everyone. For example, the higher the level of your injury, the more complications you may face. Good pulmonary care can assist in keeping you healthy after your spinal cord injury.

Normal

The process of breathing (or respiration) is a two-step process: taking in air (inspiration) and exhaling the waste products. The process of taking in air (inhalation) is an active process, requiring the use of many muscles, while the process of exhaling is a passive …

Respiratory Dependent-Spinal Cord Injury Manual, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital And Magee Rehabilitation

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

Introduction

One of the most important aspects of spinal cord injury care is respiratory management. The previous chapter deals with the effect spinal cord injury has on your ability to breathe while this chapter deals with the management of individuals who are dependent on a ventilator to breathe. This dependency may be temporary or permanent, depending on your level of injury. Please review the previous chapter prior to reading this one.

Artificial Airways

The first step in trying to maintain normal respiratory function is to establish an airway. Spinal cord injury does not affect your airway. However, in order to …

Spinal Cord Injury Manual (English)

Introduction to Skin Function

The skin is a vital part of the body with many necessary functions:

• The skin protects you from the environment. When your skin is intact, there is a barrier against bacteria and injury to the organs inside of the body. It prevents too much sunlight or harmful chemicals from entering the body.

• The skin helps you stay warm or cool. Your sweat glands produce sweat and cool you off as the sweat evaporates from the skin.

• Nerve endings in the skin send messages to the brain to give you information about pain, temperature …

Introduction-Why Nutrition Matters

Nutrition is important for everyone to maintain good health. After a spinal cord injury, nutrition can be even more important to improve overall wellness, achieve and maintain a healthy weight and help regulate bowel and bladder function. Eating a well balanced diet can help prevent the long term complications associated with SCI such as weight gain, deconditioning and skin breakdown.

A well-balanced diet can provide all of the nutrients that your body needs. Foods high in fiber, along with plenty of water, help regulate bowel function. However, if you eat more than you need, you can gain …
