A Cross Country Study Of The Role Of The Three Sectors On The Acceptance And Integration Of People With Intellectual And Physical Disabilities In Kenya And The United States Of America, Whitney Nash
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This study examines acceptance and integration of people with intellectual and physical disabilities in the United States and Kenya and the involvement of the three sectors. The literature review revealed that significant progress was made over the past century in the United States, and the past decade in Kenya in treatment of people with disabilities, but there are still inefficiencies. Respondents to the survey reported that their clients struggle with acceptance and integration in their local community, and that services provided by the public and private sectors are inadequate. The findings of this study indicate that both the United States …

Skew Selection Theory Applied To The Wealth And Welfare Of Nations, Susan F. Allen, Deby L. Cassill
Skew Selection Theory Applied To The Wealth And Welfare Of Nations, Susan F. Allen, Deby L. Cassill
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
According to skew selection theory, working citizens who build wealth and, at the same time, share portions of their wealth with those in need are more likely to survive economic downturns than citizens who hoard wealth. In this article, skew selection is employed as a theoreticalframework to support governmental efforts to develop social policies that protect the income of working citizens and, at the same time, provide for vulnerable, non-working children and elders. To illustrate its applicability, the social policies of Japan, Sweden and the United States-all of which are challenged by decaying ratios of working to non-working citizens-are compared …
“Some Of Them, They Do Right; Some Of Them, They Do Wrong”: Moral Ambiguity And The Criteria For Help Among Street Sex Workers, Jill Mccracken
“Some Of Them, They Do Right; Some Of Them, They Do Wrong”: Moral Ambiguity And The Criteria For Help Among Street Sex Workers, Jill Mccracken
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Debates surrounding criminalization and legalization are often polarized and occur without including the experiences and expertise of street workers. This article places street sex workers at the center of this conversation and offers perspectives on how these women can “get help” in the context of a system that criminalizes sex work. Drawing on an ethnographic study conducted in a large city in the southwestern United States, I rhetorically analyze how street workers talk about these issues, which brings to the surface the contradictions and complicated existence of sex work while providing insights into how these systems might be rehabilitated.
The Consequences Of Arbitrary And Selective Enforcement Of Prostitution Laws, Norma Almodovar
The Consequences Of Arbitrary And Selective Enforcement Of Prostitution Laws, Norma Almodovar
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
In policing criminal activity, law enforcement agents cannot simply choose which rapist, thief or murderer to search for and apprehend, as it is their duty to arrest, prosecute and punish every individual who commits such crimes. Yet this is not the case with policing sex work, as anti-prostitution laws are often arbitrarily enforced and police are frequently given opportunities for intimacy by choosing which victim/perpetrators they will arrest. Drawing upon multiple case studies regarding police abuse of authority as well as my own experiences as a former LAPD traffic officer and sex worker, this paper demonstrates the consequences of such …
