New Sandhoppers (Crustacea: Amphipoda) From The Gulf Coast Of The United States, E.L. Bousfield
New Sandhoppers (Crustacea: Amphipoda) From The Gulf Coast Of The United States, E.L. Bousfield
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Three species of sand-burrowing semi-terrestrial amphipod crustaceans are newly described from sandy beaches of the North American coast of the Gulf of Mexico. They (and two related species from the open Atlantic coast of North America) are removed from the genus Talorchestia Dana 1853, and placed in a new genus, Americorchestia. Americorchestia salomani, new species, and A. heardi, new species, occur from northwestern Florida to the Mississippi Delta. They are morphological counterparts of the well-known sandhoppers from the open Atlantic coast, A. megalophthalma (Bate) and A. longicornis (Say) respectively. Americorchestia barbarae, new species, related to A. …

A Study Of A Baccalaureate Degree Curriculum In Hospitality Management, Joseph B. Gregg
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Florida International University School of Hospitality Management program has been in existence since 1973. It is the only university program rated by Florida's Board of Regents as a "Distinguished Program" and is consistently ranked by educational and industry leaders as one or the top four programs of its kind in the United States.
The undergraduate program consists of fifty-five courses on a 3000-4000 level, and they are taught by a distinguished faculty or thirty-five professors, plus adjuncts and visiting lecturers from the industry. In 1990 the school moved into its own $10 million state-of-the-art facility on the university's North …
Home Adaptations For Persons With Chronic Disabilities: An Educational Model., Ruth E. Levine, Laura N. Giltin
Home Adaptations For Persons With Chronic Disabilities: An Educational Model., Ruth E. Levine, Laura N. Giltin
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
This paper offers a method by which to train students in the provision of culturally relevant, in-home environmental adaptations for persons with chronic disabilities. On the basis of a theoretical framework, the student therapist learns about the client's life-style and offers adaptations that evolve from a collaborative problem-solving process. The training process has been developed and refined over a 3-year period. A case study illustrates the student's application of theory and practice and the outcome for the client of this service provision approach.

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud
The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).
The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …
Signs Of Culture: Deafness In Nineteenth-Century America, Rebecca A. Rourke '90
Signs Of Culture: Deafness In Nineteenth-Century America, Rebecca A. Rourke '90
Fenwick Scholar Program
While there is an abundance of research on twentieth-century manifestations of Deaf culture, the nineteenth-century roots have been largely overlooked. The creation of residential schools for the deaf gave the Deaf population a place to meet and share ideas, for the first time in American history. The close and sustained contact generated cultural development. This thesis addresses the development of a cultural identity among the Deaf population by attempting to compare the experiences and opinions of the Deaf and hearing communities as they existed in nineteenth-century America.

Predicting Attrition For Women At West Point : Is It A Function Of Adopting The Male Dominant Culture?, Jane P. Mckeon
Master's Theses
This study examined 40 selected items from the Student Information Form that had been identified as representing cultural differences between men and women at the United States Military Academy. A principal components analysis of the data collected from 3005 male and 314 female cadets yielded 7 factors for men and 6 factors for women suitable for interpretation. As hypothesized, men and women were found to have similar cultual values, attitudes and experiences based on their similar factor structures. Next, item responses from 58 women attriters were compared to responses from the nonattriters. Using all the factors identified for the women, …

In January 1988, scientists from over 25 organizations in 13 countries and territories cooperated in the largest Global Positioning System (GPS) campaign in the world to date (Table 1). 43 GPS receivers collected approximately 590 station-days of data in America, Samoa, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Sweden, United States, West Germany, and Venezuela. The experiment was entitled CASA UNO, an acronym for Central and South America -- and uno is the Spanish word for one, designating first epoch measurements. The CASA UNO experiment was the first civilian effort implementing a global GPS satellite tracking network. …
A Land Development Financial Model, Bruce Saunders
A Land Development Financial Model, Bruce Saunders
Master's Theses
Often the term "real estate industry" is casually used as if sufficient in accurately describing a well defined segment contributing to the GNP. In actuality, real estate is a very large complex industry, involving a variety of corporations, partnerships, trusts, and individuals with different functions and objectives. A comprehensive profile of the industry would include investors, lenders, and government regulators. These players may be involved with a vast array of projects such as undeveloped land, single family and multifamily housing, office building, shopping centers, industrial buildings, hotels and motels, mobile home parks, resorts or recreational complexes. This variety illustrates the …
