Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are highly controversial subjects that have drawn much attention in Canada over the last two decades. This paper outlines how the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, and Canada have approached the practices. Jurisprudence, public opinion polls, legislative developments, and the positions of medical organizations and their members are included in the analysis. A number of arguments for and against the continued prohibition of the practices in Canada are evaluated. As well, information regarding the extent to which euthanasia and assisted suicide are performed in these countries is assessed. It will be shown that Canadians currently enjoy …

In The Face Of Adversity: The Response Of The Vincentian And Charity Families To 9/11, Regina Bechtle S.C.

Vincentian Studies

The response of the Vincentian and Charity Families to the attacks of 9/11 is chronicled, using people’s own words wherever possible. On the day itself and during the aftermath, Sisters of Charity and Vincentians prayed with and counseled grieving people, first responders, and rescue workers. Personnel from Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center were among the earliest to arrive at Ground Zero, and the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers treated over one thousand victims. Among other things, Sisters of Charity served as New York Police Department chaplains, answered calls to hospital information lines, and worked at a DNA collection site …

The Best Things In Law Are Free?: Towards Quality Free Public Access To Primary Legal Materials In Canada, Teresa Scassa Oct 2000

The Best Things In Law Are Free?: Towards Quality Free Public Access To Primary Legal Materials In Canada, Teresa Scassa

Dalhousie Law Journal

In this article the author explores the move in several jurisdictions towards providing primary legal materials online without charge. In Canada the federal government, most provincial governments and many courts currently provide some form of online access to primary legal materials. However, this is not done in a unified, comprehensive or systematic manner. The author evaluates the "legal information institute" model as it has emerged in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, and considers whether such a model would be useful or workable in Canada. In the course of this assessment, the author canvasses such issues as the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Japanese And U.S. Teaching Styles Of Mathematics, Timothy Michael Wurdock

Mathematics Graduate Theses

This study examines the effects of different international teaching styles on the performance of junior high school students. Japanese students ranked higher than U.S. students on international tests. The whole-class method and open-ended problems are techniques frequently used in Japanese classrooms. These techniques will be incorporated into the author’s curriculum to determine their effectiveness in teaching mathematics. Two eighth grade classes will be studied. The author will teach the experimental group using the whole-class method. The control group will be taught using the American method.

Analysis Of Deformation Data At Parkfield, California: Detection Of A Long-Term Strain Transient, Stephen S. Gao, Paul G. Silver, Alan T. Linde Feb 2000

Analysis Of Deformation Data At Parkfield, California: Detection Of A Long-Term Strain Transient, Stephen S. Gao, Paul G. Silver, Alan T. Linde

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Analysis of more than a decade of high-quality data, particularly those from the two-color electronic distance meter (EDM), in the Parkfield, California, area reveals a significant transient in slip rate along the San Andreas Fault. This transient consists of an increase in fault slip rate of 3.3 ± 0.9 mm/yr during 1993.0 to 1998.0. The most reliable fault creep instruments show a comparable increase in slip rate, suggesting that the deformation is localized to the fault which breaks the surface. There was also an increase in precipitation around 1993. It is unlikely, however, that this anomaly is due directly to …

Wives For Sale: The Modern International Mail-Order Bride Industry, Kathryn A. Lloyd Jan 2000

Wives For Sale: The Modern International Mail-Order Bride Industry, Kathryn A. Lloyd

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This comment begins by discussing the mail-order bride industry in the context of international human trafficking, focusing on traffic between the United States and the Philippines, and includes an overview of the current regulations that exist regarding this industry. It then gives an overview of the major criticisms of the mail-order bride industry, the international problems created by the practice of trafficking women as brides, and the failure of current regulations in the United States and the Philippines (or the lack thereof) to address these problems. Finally, this comment calls for international regulation that would begin to address these problems, …

Sequence Stratigraphy And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Member Of The Deep Spring Formation: Implications For The Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Boundary In The Basin And Range Province, Western United States, Shannon Michelle Parsons Jan 2000

Sequence Stratigraphy And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Member Of The Deep Spring Formation: Implications For The Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Boundary In The Basin And Range Province, Western United States, Shannon Michelle Parsons

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Deep Spring Formation of the southern Basin and Range Province provides information valuable in locating and correlating the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary in western North America. Sequence-stratigraphic analysis of the lower Deep Spring Formation revealed three sequence boundaries. The proposed sequence-stratigraphic model includes early highstand slumps, a feature interpreted to be unique to mixed systems, which form at the onset of the Highstand Systems Tract; This study identified the small shelly fossil Cloudina in the lower Deep Spring Formation. Cloudina was previously unrecognized at this stratigraphic level in the Basin and Range. This Neoproterozoic fossil is associated in the lower Deep …
