The Demographics Of The U.S. Equine Population, Emily R. Kilby Jan 2007

The Demographics Of The U.S. Equine Population, Emily R. Kilby

State of the Animals 2007

In this demographic examination of America’s equine population, the numbers clearly show upward trends in all things equestrian over the past fifty years. Will that trajectory continue, adding year after year to the current ten million population, or will loss of open spaces turn the tide as it limits horse housing and riding room? Will ownership patterns undergo fundamental changes when population density, land costs, and escalating environmental controls eliminate the “backyard”- keeping concept and make suburban boarding stables untenable? Will horse production expenses rise in the face of land pressures to the point that equestrian involvement, now a highly …

Currents Of Liberty, Seas Of Change: Black Sailors As Subversive Agents Of Freedom In The Early Republic, Skye Montgomery Jan 2007

Currents Of Liberty, Seas Of Change: Black Sailors As Subversive Agents Of Freedom In The Early Republic, Skye Montgomery

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Years after being kidnapped from his native Ibo village as a young boy, Olaudah Equiano vividly recalled his wonder at seeing a European ship for the first time. Although he failed to realize it at the time, that same ship, and the Atlantic currents it navigated, would shortly transport him and millions of his countrymen to lives of slavery on the far shores of a distant continent. In addition to providing a convenient avenue for the initial transport of slaves, water enabled the development of a trade network linking scattered plantations in the Caribbean to centers of trade in North …

Relation Of Specific Conductance In Ground Water To Intersection Of Flow Paths By Wells, And Associated Major Ion And Nitrate Geochemistry, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Austin, Texas, 1978–2003, Bradley D. Garner, Barbara J. Mahler Jan 2007

Mahler

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Understanding of karst flow systems can be complicated by the presence of solution-enlarged conduits, which can trans-mit large volumes of water through the aquifer rapidly. If the geochemistry at a well can be related to streamflow or spring discharge (springflow), or both, the relations can indicate the presence of recent recharge in water at the well, which in turn might indicate that the well intersects a conduit (and thus a major flow path). Increasing knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of conduits in the aquifer can contribute to better understanding of aquifer framework and function. To that end, 26 wells …

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton Jan 2007

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addressed the need for empirical research on the leadership of multinational virtual teams (Davis & Bryant, 2003; Early & Gibson, 2002; Ilgen, Lepine, and Hollenbeck, 1997; Prieto & Arias, 1997), particularly in the field of educational leadership (Cheng, 1995). This was accomplished through the development of a model based upon the cultural values discovered through the use of Hofstede's (1980, 2001) Values Survey Module 94 (VSM 94). As workers will bring values from their own cultures to the multinational workplace (Bochner & Hesketh, 1994), research was conducted to determine the cultural values of economics professors in the United …

32 In '44: A Management And Environmental Study Of Submarine Construction At Portsmouth Navy Yard During World War Ii, Rodney Keith Watterson

Doctoral Dissertations

After averaging the completion of less than two submarines a year in the 1930s, the Portsmouth Navy Yard completed an astonishing thirty-two submarines in 1944. The yard's outstanding performance during World War II was the product of a highly motivated work force and a management team that thrived in a decentralized wartime shipyard environment. Employing aggressive and innovative management techniques that included employee empowerment, small teams, and mass production techniques to the extent that they could be applied to submarine construction at the time, the shipyard delivered submarines at unprecedented rates.

There were downsides to the shipyard's crowning achievements during …

Human Rights & Human Welfare

“9/11 changed everything.” Not really. In fact, there has been far more continuity than change over the past six years in both international and domestic politics. Nonetheless, human rights often have been harmed—although not by terrorism but by “the war on terror.”

Groundwater Levels In The Balcones Fault Zone, Hays And Travis Counties, Texas, 1937-2005 Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2006-1025, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

ABSTRACT More than 50,000 water-level measurements from 1937 to 2005 in the Balcones Fault Zone of Central Texas were compiled from 49 wells, and one quarry. Data represent water levels from the Edwards, Trinity, and Austin Chalk Aquifers. A simple database was constructed to compile the water-level and well-construction data. The purpose of this report is to provide a foundation for future hydrogeologic investigations. INTRODUCTION Groundwater is an important resource for Texans and constituted nearly 60% of all water used by Texans in 1999 (TWDB, 2002). Aquifers along the Balcones Fault Zone in Central Texas provide an important groundwater resource …

Potentiometric Maps For Low To High Flow Conditions, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2007-1201, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District Jan 2007

Potentiometric Maps For Low To High Flow Conditions, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2007-1201, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

ABSTRACT Potentiometric maps for the karstic Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer (Barton Springs aquifer) were constructed using data from high, below average, and low flow conditions. These synoptic potentiometric maps document varying hydrologic conditions and stresses and contain a dense set of data (n= 166 to 231) for this relatively small portion of the Edwards Aquifer (155 sq. mi.), allowing detailed examination of hydrogeologic features and phenomena. Results indicate steep gradients within the extremely dynamic aquifer system, with water-level changes from 20 to 100 feet over large portions of the area. Troughs and ridges in the potentiometric surfaces …

Failure Prediction For Hospitality Firms In Us And Korea Using Logit And Neural Networks Models, Hyewon Youn Jan 2007

Failure Prediction For Hospitality Firms In Us And Korea Using Logit And Neural Networks Models, Hyewon Youn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study developed failure prediction models for Korean and U.S. hospitality firms using logistic regression and artificial neural networks (ANN) techniques; For Korean hospitality firms, the one-variable logit model with interest coverage ratio correctly classified 83.74% of in-sample firms and 76.32% of hold-out firms. The ratio's negative coefficient suggests that low interest coverage of a firm increases its failure probability. To prevent the failures, Korean hospitality firms need to move away from heavily leveraged financial structure. The developed ANN model demonstrated an overall classification rate of 86.18% for in-sample firms and 77.63% for hold-out firms. Empirically, this study shows that …

Winning It All: The Cinematic Construction Of The Athletic American Dream, Andrew Miller Jan 2007

Winning It All: The Cinematic Construction Of The Athletic American Dream, Andrew Miller

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Powered by a philosophy of self-determination and an ideology of a level playing field, the Athletic American Dream has become firmly entrenched in American culture. Following narrative pattterns influenced by both newspaper sports sections and juvenile sports fiction, it coalesces around underdog-to-champion, hard-work-leads-to-victory narratives that shape the sporting imagination and help to forge the masculine ideal that is the foundation of American self-image. The Athletic American Dream is produced, packaged and sold by mass media so successfully that one could argue that it becomes the most dominant vision of the American Dream by the end of the twentieth century.

Slavery In New Hampshire: Profitable Godliness To Racial Consciousness, Jody R. Fernald Jan 2007

Slavery In New Hampshire: Profitable Godliness To Racial Consciousness, Jody R. Fernald

Master's Theses and Capstones

The goal of this thesis is to restore complexity, normalcy, and the later development of racism to the history and culture of slavery in New Hampshire. In addition to its role as a normal aspect of life in a hierarchical Atlantic world, slavery in New Hampshire gave birth to both racism and racial consciousness after its gradual demise in the state. The roots of slavery, the acculturation of different populations, changing interpretations of the state's history of slavery, and contemporary examples of its influence are presented here in an effort to correct the perception that slavery was inconsequential in the …

The Health Insurance Debate In Canada: Lessons For The United States?, Mary Anne Bobinski Jan 2007

The Health Insurance Debate In Canada: Lessons For The United States?, Mary Anne Bobinski

Faculty Articles

This Essay begins with an intentionally ambiguous title. Are comparisons to Canada relevant and useful for policy-makers in the United States and, if so, what lessons can we learn? Part II of this Essay highlights some of the risks and benefits of cross-border comparisons between the United States and Canada. In Part III, I analyze some of the key data points often cited in comparing the two health care systems. Part IV explores the current Canadian debate about private health insurance. Finally, in Part V, I focus on the lessons from Canada for the health insurance debate in the United …

Twilight Of The Idols? Eu Internet Privacy And The Post Enlightenment Paradigm, Mark F. Kightlinger Jan 2007

Twilight Of The Idols? Eu Internet Privacy And The Post Enlightenment Paradigm, Mark F. Kightlinger

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article provides a timely examination of the European Union's approach to information privacy on the internet, an approach that some legal scholars have held up as a model for law reform in the United States. Building on the author's recent piece discussing the U.S. approach to internet privacy, this Article applies to the EU's internet privacy regime a theoretical framework constructed from the writings of philosopher and social theorist Alasdair MacIntyre on the failures of Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment thought. The EU internet privacy regime is shown to reflect and reinforce three key elements of the "post-Enlightenment paradigm," i.e., the …

A Microeconomic Model Of Healthcare Systems: From Theoretical To Practical, Jesse Helligso Jan 2007

A Microeconomic Model Of Healthcare Systems: From Theoretical To Practical, Jesse Helligso

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a microeconomic market analysis of healthcare systems. Different countries use various forms for financing and providing healthcare, and the effects of market forces on the quality, access and economic efficiency of these divergent healthcare markets is the primary subject. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the forces working in the healthcare market. Free-market healthcare systems allow medical providers to become price-setters. Price-setting by medical providers creates an economically inefficient system which decreases public access to healthcare but creates a high quality system. Single-payer systems make government the price-setter which creates a system in which medical …

Appropriate Application Of The Standardized Precipitation Index In Arid Locations And Dry Seasons, Hong Wu, Mark D. Svoboda, Michael J. Hayes, Donald A. Wilhite, Fujiang Wen

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is now widely used throughout the world in both a re-search and an operational mode. For arid climates, or those with a distinct dry season where zero values are common, the SPI at short time scales is lower bounded, referring to non-normally distributed in this study. In these cases, the SPI is always greater than a certain value and fails to indicate a drought occurrence. The nationwide statistics based on our study suggest that the non-normality rates are closely related to local precipitation climates. In the eastern United States, SPI values at short time scales …
