How Graduate Schools Percieve A Leadership Major, Rachael Enoch Jan 1994

How Graduate Schools Percieve A Leadership Major, Rachael Enoch

Honors Theses

We wanted our project to make a difference in two areas. First we hoped that our project would help the Jepson School and its students understand more about leadership in the "real world", about how leadership and leadership studies are perceived, and about potential educational and career options for leadership studies majors. We wanted to help answer the question that everyone wants to know: What a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership Studies means to graduate schools and employers? Second, we wanted our project to advance the field of leadership education and leadership studies. We thought that the data we collected …

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret Erçal, Hsi-Chieh Lee, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss, Anurag Chawla

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991 in the United States, with approximately 80% of patients expected to survive 5 years. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully, Thus, in recent years, there has been rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma. Here, the authors present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from 3 benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. The approach uses discriminant features, based on tumor …

Military Justice: From Oxymoron To Aspiration, Janet Walker Jan 1994

Military Justice: From Oxymoron To Aspiration, Janet Walker

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The mandate for Charter-based judicial review of military law is now in its second decade. Comparative analysis of the relationship between military law and the civilian judiciary in common law countries reveals that Canadian courts benefitting from this mandate are so placed within the constitutional structure as to be uniquely able to engage in substantive review of the adherence to the principles of fundamental justice by Canadian courts martial. Accordingly, the question of the jurisdiction of military tribunals which has formed the focal point internationally for judicial review is of passing significance in Canada. The yet critical issues of civilian …

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron Jan 1994

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron

Honors Theses

The following pages are a collection of three case studies assembled with the intent to facilitate discussion about key leadership issues related to the public policy realm. Critics of leadership studies have often posted to the theoretical nature o the discipline to criticize the worth. One method to teach leadership is the utilization of case studies, or "real world" examples. If your position is that leadership can only be taught through practical experience, these case studies should present an interesting exercise. They seek to inculcate the idealistic world of theoretical studies with doses of realistic situations.

For these case studies …

"Artificial Conscience": Professional Elites And Professional Discipline From 1920 To 1950, James A. Smith Jan 1994

"Artificial Conscience": Professional Elites And Professional Discipline From 1920 To 1950, James A. Smith

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Recent historical studies of the British and American Bars have identified their professional elites' willingness to define and enforce a concept of legal ethics which restricted less fortunate members' ability to practice and less fortunate individuals' ability to obtain legal assistance. This essay applies the thesis to the Canadian Bar's and especially the Law Society of Upper Canada's use of their increasing control over professional discipline from 1920 to 1950. Identifying similar trends in the Canadian profession's evolution, while emphasizing effects rather than intentions, it makes similar conclusions about the Canadian professional elite's use of such powers during this period.

Loving The Medium: A Review Of Stephen Carter’S The Culture Of Disbelief, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 1994

Loving The Medium: A Review Of Stephen Carter’S The Culture Of Disbelief, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

Stephen Carter is a most gifted, unpredictable commentator on life and law in the United States today. He has staked out a distinct, complex position on race already, and begins to do the same on religion in his latest book, The Culture of Disbelief. This book is well-written, well-reasoned, and sprinkled with the wry twists and engaging stories that increasingly mark Carter’s style.

The book integrates some of Carter’s former writing on the theme he calls “religion as Hobby,” an attitude by the courts that he brings to the fore in his analysis of news articles, court opinions, and political …

Implications Of The United States Ratification Of The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child: Civil Rights, The Constitution And The Family, Barbara J. Nauck Jan 1994

Implications Of The United States Ratification Of The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child: Civil Rights, The Constitution And The Family, Barbara J. Nauck

Cleveland State Law Review

This note begins with an examination of why the UNCRC has yet to be ratified in this country. The perspective of children's rights advocates is discussed. A comparison of Romano-Germanic and common law is presented to facilitate an understanding of the major differences that affect the way the UNCRC is viewed under the two systems. The effect of a treaty, self-executing or not, in United States' courts is examined. Civil Rights Articles 13, 14,15 and 16 in the Convention are linguistically analyzed and the United States law applicable to each Article is reviewed for its compatibility with the UNCRC. This …

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek Dec 1993

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Much has been written in library literature of late about access and ownership and how libraries should respond organizationally to the new role libraries are developing to meet the dual challenges of pervasive information technology and reduced budgets. There are repeated calls for libraries to give customized service, be intimately aware of users' needs and deliver documents at the point of use. In an article on the efficacy of branch libraries entitled "Organization Misfits," it is posited that departmental (or "branch") libraries, due to their size and flexibility, can provide models for this type of service with little change to …

Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C. Oct 1993

Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C.

Vincentian Studies

The first part of this article gives the political, social, economic, and religious context of the world in which Elizabeth Seton lived. The second part describes the establishment and work of the Sisters of Charity. Education for all was important to early Americans, largely because everyone was supposed to read the Bible. Women had more agency than their European counterparts, although their influence was still mostly confined to the home. They were charged with instilling morality in children, and through them, in society in general. This was reflected in the curriculum of Elizabeth Seton’s school, Saint Joseph’s Academy. The outlook …

Some Aspects Of Elizabeth Seton's Spiritual/Theological World, Kathleen Flanagan S.C. Oct 1993

Some Aspects Of Elizabeth Seton's Spiritual/Theological World, Kathleen Flanagan S.C.

Vincentian Studies

Elizabeth Seton was influenced by three men: John Henry Hobart, an Episcopalian minister; Louis William Dubourg, a powerful Sulpician; and John Carroll, the bishop of Baltimore. Hobart represented minority views even within his own church because he was “High Church”— he believed in the importance of the episcopacy and of the sacraments. He inspired Elizabeth and strengthened her scriptural and sacramental piety. He provided readings that made her reason her decision about which church to belong to, although she did not rely on reason alone. Dubourg suggested that Elizabeth move to Baltimore, was highly instrumental in establishing Saint Joseph’s Academy, …

The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 1793–1803, Marilyn Thei S.C. Oct 1993

The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 1793–1803, Marilyn Thei S.C.

Vincentian Studies

Marilyn Thei’s highly detailed article examines Elizabeth Seton “within the context of her world, amidst life in late eighteenth-century New York City as experienced by women of her class, race, and age.” Thei uses the writing of Elizabeth and her peers as well as sources of feminist scholarship to do this. Elizabeth’s life is often contrasted with lives of women from other races and classes. The topics covered include the extent of Elizabeth’s engagement with the world of fashion and entertainment, the nature of her relationships with her husband and with her dearest friend, her experience of motherhood, her role …

Culture, Human Capital, And The Earnings Of West Indian Blacks, Stephen A. Woodbury Sep 1993

Culture, Human Capital, And The Earnings Of West Indian Blacks, Stephen A. Woodbury

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper offers an empirical analysis of West Indians' performance in the U.S. labor market, drawing adjusted comparisons between the earnings of native-born black American men of West Indian ancestry and the earnings of other native-born men, both black and white. The data required for these comparisons come from the 1980 Census of Population, in which native-born respondents reported their ancestry. The results offer a mixed picture of the success of West Indians, suggesting that native-born blacks of West Indian ancestry do have somewhat higher earnings than other native-born blacks, other things equal. Nevertheless, there is still a large earnings …
