A Business Economist With Swiss Heritage Looks At Switzerland, Donald P. Hilty Feb 2001

A Business Economist With Swiss Heritage Looks At Switzerland, Donald P. Hilty

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For many in the United States, the word "Switzerland" conjures up pleasant thoughts of cows, mountains, Heidi, democracy -- maybe also a proud heritage and some dear friends -- but, perhaps, a country that is a bit dull. The purpose here is to alert this audience: Switzerland is not dull. It is in the big leagues of international business. This small country in the middle of Europe has gained the stature of an economic giant, not just in relation to its size but in absolute terms.

A Comparative Analysis Of Church And State Issue Attitudes In The United States And Norway, Bryan Arlon Smith Rasmussen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study looks at the effect that the relationship between church and state has on the people of Norway and the United States. It is a study of political culture and socialization that compares the role of the established state church in Norway to the "Wall of Separation" that exists in the United States; Public opinion data is obtained from the World Values Survey and presented in terms of the current Accommodationist/Separationist debate. The most important variable in determining issue attitudes turns out to be whether or not a person attends church regularly, and not their denominational identity. The study …

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles And The Need For Consensus: An Australian And United States Comparison Case Study, Renee Haas

Honors Capstones

Cross-border financial statements can confuse users of financial statements, therefore the development ofInternational Accounting Standards is important in the accounting profession. Comparing countries financial statements can be difficult because Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) vary in different countries. To illustrate the need for harmonization of accounting standards, this paper is divided into three research sections. The first section discusses the history, organizations, and conceptual framework of United States and Australian accounting professions. The second section compares and contrasts the similarities and differences between United States GAAP and Australian GAAP. The final section provides a financial statement analysis of two Australian …

The Specter Of Salem In American Culture, Gretchen A. Adams Jan 2001

The Specter Of Salem In American Culture, Gretchen A. Adams

Doctoral Dissertations

The specter of Salem witchcraft haunts the American imagination. No other historical event has provided such a wide range of scholars, dramatists, fiction writers, poets, and amateur sleuths with a subject that so stubbornly resists a final resolution. Although barely nine months passed from the first accusations of witchcraft to the last, those nine months of accusations, confessions, denials, trials, and executions have spawned a vast literature which for 300 years has sought to fix blame or find reason for the ordeal of the witch trials of 1692. The Specter of Salem in American Culture examines this persistent interest by …

"In Passion And In Hope:" The Pilgrimage Of An American Radical, Martha Dodd Stern And Family, 1933--1990, John Francis Fox Jr. Jan 2001

"In Passion And In Hope:" The Pilgrimage Of An American Radical, Martha Dodd Stern And Family, 1933--1990, John Francis Fox Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the literary/political pilgrimage of Martha Dodd Stern (1908--1990), an unusually promising writer. Using Martha's writings, government intelligence files like the Venona Transcripts, I develop a narrative and analytic family biography to analyze the faith of this leftist and develop a typology of the fellow traveler that shows its roots in the Progressive Era and their radicalization under the Great Depression and growth of fascism.

Martha's father, historian William E. Dodd (1869 to 1940), imparted to Martha his Wilsonian progressivism and resentment of social distinctions. Martha's experience in Nazi Germany (1933 to 1937) radicalized these roots. She placed …

Predictions Of Sediment Toxicity In The Barton Springs Watershed Located In Texas Using Sediment Quality Guidelines, Christopher G. Ingersoll, Ning Wang, Jeannie M.R. Hayward Jan 2001

Predictions Of Sediment Toxicity In The Barton Springs Watershed Located In Texas Using Sediment Quality Guidelines, Christopher G. Ingersoll, Ning Wang, Jeannie M.R. Hayward

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Elevated concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides, and metals have been documented in bed sediments or in resuspended particles in water in the Barton Springs watershed located in Austin, Texas. The endangered Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum) inhabits the springs and concern has been expressed that sediments in the springs may be contaminated to concentrations that may be toxic to invertebrates that serve as a food source for these salamanders. Consensus-based probable effect concentrations (PECs) were used to predict the potential for toxicity in sediments collected from the springs. These PECs were developed to determine the concentration of …

This study compares eBusiness capabilities of the forest products industries in the United States and Canada. Structural and functional factors limiting or encouraging eBusiness development, attitudes and perceived value of eBusiness, concerns and possible impacts of eBusiness on traditional business practices were studied. Results indicate that high potential exists for eBusiness to flourish in the forest products sectors in both these countries. However, the study indicated that Canadian respondents were further along in Internet implementation in 1998 relative to their U.S. counterparts. In addition, Canadian respondents had a higher degree of satisfaction in achieving the desired benefits of using the …

War, Reform And State -Building In Brazil And In The United States: Slavery, Emancipation And Decision -Making Processes In The Paraguayan And Civil Wars (1861--1870), Vitor Izecksohn

Doctoral Dissertations

The present dissertation undertakes a comparative-historical analysis of the impact of the American Civil War and the Paraguayan War on the American and the Brazilian populations. It investigates how both war's dynamics interfered with the social orders existent in both countries. It underlines the impact of recruitment to show how the pronounced growth of each national state during wartime interfered with the lives and customs of the populations subjected to the draft.

War mobilization is always a dramatic event in any society. Increasing government intervention during wartime normally leads to a temporary invasion of local prerogatives through recruitment and mobilization. …

The Best Of Times And The Worst Of Times: Lessons From Recent Reforms Of The French Retirement System, Kathryn L. Moore Jan 2001

The Best Of Times And The Worst Of Times: Lessons From Recent Reforms Of The French Retirement System, Kathryn L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Principally because of increasing life expectancy and the fact that the baby boom generation is reaching retirement age and is followed by a much smaller generation, the American social security system is facing a long-term funding deficit. The Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors and Disability Trust Funds predicts that unless corrective action is taken, social security benefits will exceed dedicated tax revenues by the year 2016, and the social security system will become insolvent, that is, unable to pay benefits in full, by the year 2038.

The United States is not alone in facing these circumstances. …

Should Shareholders Have A Greater Say Over Executive Pay??, Randall S. Thomas, Brian R. Cheffins Jan 2001

Should Shareholders Have A Greater Say Over Executive Pay??, Randall S. Thomas, Brian R. Cheffins

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Executive pay arrangements in Britain's publicly quoted companies have been subjected to much criticism in recent years. Proposals that shareholders should have a greater direct say over managerial remuneration have been a by-product of the concerns expressed. Debate on this point, however, has been largely speculative. This is because there is little evidence available in the United Kingdom indicating how shareholders would exercise any new powers they might be given. This paper addresses the evidentiary gap by drawing upon the experience in the United States, where empirical work indicates that shareholder voting only operates as a potential check when pay …

An Empirically Based Comparison Of American And European Regulatory Approaches To Police Investigation, Christopher Slobogin Jan 2001

An Empirically Based Comparison Of American And European Regulatory Approaches To Police Investigation, Christopher Slobogin

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article takes a comparative and empirical look at two of the most significant methods of police investigation: searches for and seizures of tangible evidence and interrogation of suspects. It first compares American doctrine regulating these investigative tools with the analogous rules predominant in Europe. It then discusses research on the American system that sheds light on the relative advantages and disadvantages of the two regulatory regimes.

Investigating The Effect Of The International Stock Indexes On The United States Stock Index Futures, Zehlha Illhan Ertuna Jan 2001

Investigating The Effect Of The International Stock Indexes On The United States Stock Index Futures, Zehlha Illhan Ertuna

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The futures market is used extensively for price discovery, arbitrage, and hedging. Since their introduction in the 1980's, the stock index futures have also become an active market and a very important research area. Any additional knowledge to understand the underlying effects on the index will help both investors and researchers. In this study, I examine the role of informational flow from the world's major stock markets (British, French, German, Japanese) to the U.S. futures market in terms of forming expectations, and offer new insights regarding the informational efficiency of the futures markets in an intenational perspective. State space modeling …
