Substance Use In Nursing: Barriers And Facilitators In Returning To Work Under Monitoring, Jordan Ferris, Marian Wilson, Janessa M. Graves, Victoria Sattler

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: The US is currently experiencing a substance use epidemic, with overdose deaths rising significantly. Substance use disorders (SUD) affect 17.3% of individuals aged 12 or older, including nurses (RNs) who face unique occupational stressors. RNs with SUD pose risks to both personal & patient safety. Regulatory bodies often impose monitoring & disciplinary actions on RNs with SUD, creating challenges for their return-to-work (RTW). Little is known about what supports & hinders successful return-to-work for RNs after substance use discipline

Methods: This study used Group Concept Mapping (GCM) to identify & prioritize facilitators and barriers in the RTW process for …

Pediatric hypertension (HTN) affects 3%-5% of children in the United States, yet only 25% are diagnosed and 60% lack recommended follow-up care. Skepticism about elevated blood pressure (BP) readings and reluctance to use antihypertensive medications by parents and clinicians highlight the need for stakeholder-informed strategies to address these challenges. This study examined parents' perceived needs, their recommended strategies to improve HTN detection, and contextual health system challenges. Parents and clinicians from 10 pediatric primary care clinics participated in semi-structured qualitative interviews. Only parents of children with documented stage 2 BP readings and a HTN diagnosis, but with gaps in care …

Frankie Nicole Weaver, Comparative Twentieth Century South African and United States Civil Rights and Voting Rights Histories

Originally shared as an in-person comparative upper-level undergraduate history course, this course was adapted for online, virtual use. It works well in either format; however, if you share it virtually, I strongly encourage at least one weekly synchronous class meeting and utilizing breakout rooms to promote discussion. Also, provide discussion questions and randomly enter breakout rooms to facilitate discussion --ensuring that engaging discussions occur. I recommend offering both in-person and virtual office hours, regardless.

Childhood cancer incidence has steadily risen both in the United States and worldwide, yet its environmental contributors remain underrecognized in clinical care. Children and cancer survivors are particularly susceptible to environmental exposures due to their unique physiology and the long-term health vulnerabilities that follow cancer treatment. Although exposures to substances such as pesticides, air pollution, and household chemicals are linked to increased cancer risk, limited clinical frameworks and clinician training leave oncologists underprepared to address growing environmental health concerns from families. A holistic pediatric oncology environmental health program in Murcia, Spain offers a scalable vision for embedding the environment into …

“Rights Not Rescue”: How Stigma Influences Harmful Legislation Toward Sex Workers In The Deep South, Abigail Mckenzie Conover

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

In the United States, while prostitution or sex work is not explicitly illegal at a federal level, certain characteristics have been criminalized, mainly in indirect ways. This is significant when considering the different ways that sex work is regarded (both positively and negatively) at an institutional level. Introduction Despite the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living with HIV (PLWH) mental health, large-scale, real-world data on mental healthcare utilisation and associated factors among PLWH remain limited. This study explores mental healthcare utilisation and associated factors among PLWH during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods Using a retrospective cohort design, we identified and included 4575 PLWH through computational phenotyping based on relevant Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model concept sets from the All of Us programme between March 2018 and March 2022. Mental healthcare utilisation was measured using the yearly count of mental healthcare visits and compared …

Background: Case series report high mortality after fetal diagnosis of moderate to severe mitral regurgitation in combination with left atrial dilation, hydrops, or restrictive atrial septum. However, overall outcomes and specific high-risk features remain unclear.

Methods: We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort study of fetuses with ≥moderate mitral regurgitation and normal cardiac connections evaluated January 1, 2005 to January 31, 2016. Fetuses undergoing fetal cardiac intervention (FCI) were described separately. We assessed associations between fetal echocardiographic features and discharge mortality using mixed logistic regression and classification and regression tree modeling, stratified by studies performed < 28 and ≥28 weeks gestational age (GA).

Results: Of 67 fetuses, 96% had …
