The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich Jan 1992

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich

Theses

This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.

Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.

Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …

An Analysis Of The Water Situation In The United States: 1989-2040, Richard W. Guldin, Usda Forest Service Sep 1989

An Analysis Of The Water Situation In The United States: 1989-2040, Richard W. Guldin, Usda Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Several Federal agencies have historically had responsibilities for conducting assessments of the Nation's water resources. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service (SCS), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its predecessor agencies, among others, have conducted studies assessing the current situation and future prospects for water in particular regions of the country. Responsibility for national water assessments was assigned to the U.S. Water Resources Council (WRC) by the Water Resources Planning Act of 1965. With the demise of the WRC in 1981, several member agencies have attempted to take …

The Daughters Of Charity In The Spanish-American War, Gertrude Fenner D.C. Oct 1987

The Daughters Of Charity In The Spanish-American War, Gertrude Fenner D.C.

Vincentian Studies

When the American government called for nurses during the Spanish-American War, 189 of the 282 sisters who responded were Daughters of Charity. Often under great hardship, they served the wounded in several hospitals within the United States and went to the battle lines in Cuba. They joined Spanish Daughters in Puerto Rico. They traveled on hospital ships and dealt with large numbers of typhoid and other fever cases at sea and on land. The Red Cross and other lay nurses often followed the Daughters’ techniques in nursing and ward management. The Daughters’ influence on Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton is …

Giving Up The Ghost: Death In The Depression, Victoria Getis Jan 1987

Giving Up The Ghost: Death In The Depression, Victoria Getis

Honors Papers

The preceding section is the human evidence behind this paper: what did the Great Depression feel like? What was it like to live in a Hooverville? To travel across the country in a rundown Jalopy? To Jump freight trains and live in box cars? To go on relief? What impact did the depression have on the national and individual psyche? Many authors have dealt with these questions, so why do it again? First, this thesis represents a attempt to draw together all the information for myself. Second, it is also an endeavor to find what people considered then (and perhaps …

Trade Friction With Japan And The American Policy Response, Thomas J. Schoenbaum May 1984

Trade Friction With Japan And The American Policy Response, Thomas J. Schoenbaum

Michigan Law Review

In Toyko recently I called upon an official of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to discuss trade frictions between the United States and Japan. On the way to my appointment I passed by Hibiya Park in the center of the city. About 10,000 people were gathered in a peaceful demonstration against any lifting of Japan's quotas on imports of agricultural products. Inside the MIT! building I asked the official whether the quotas on beef and oranges would be abolished soon. He told me they would eventually be liberalized or abolished to please the United States, but that …

Observations On The Food And Food Habits Of Clapper Rails (Rallus Longirostris Boddaert) From Tidal Marshes Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Richard W. Heard Jan 1982

Observations On The Food And Food Habits Of Clapper Rails (Rallus Longirostris Boddaert) From Tidal Marshes Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The feeding habits of five nominal subspecies of clapper rails (Rallus longirostris Boddaert) collected in tidal marshes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States are compared. Data on the food from the stomachs of 183 rails were analyzed and the earlier literature critically reviewed. During the warmer months (May through early fall), crabs, predominantly Uca spp., comprised the major part of the food items found. Limited data on a few rails collected during late fall and winter, when Uca spp. are not usually available, indicate that snails then become a major part of the clapper rail’s …

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin Jan 1981

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin

Theses

This thesis has several components. Its review of antipoverty literature leads-in to a theoretical perspective of the causes, effects, and remediation of poverty in the United States. A small minority of powerful individuals and corporations who monopolize decision- making apparatuses consistently make decisions which nurture unjust, inequitable allocations of the nation's resources. As they protect their vested interests, the socio- economic and political systems which perpetuate the gross economic imbalance between rich and poor are nurtured . The poor (and increasingly , the middle class) are left virtually powerless, even over the decisions which affect their own lives.

In order …

Alcohol-Related Arrests In Birmingham., Robert L. Berry Jan 1981

Alcohol-Related Arrests In Birmingham., Robert L. Berry

All ETDs from UAB

Criminologists and historians generally conclude that the present is neither the best nor the worst as far as crime is concerned. Durkheim (1964) made a memorable observation on the inevitability of criminal acts when he said, "Crime is normal because a society exempt from it is utterly impossible" (p. 67).

The Development Of A Course Of Study In Fda Drug Regulatory Procedures, Robin Adele Wills Jan 1975

The Development Of A Course Of Study In Fda Drug Regulatory Procedures, Robin Adele Wills

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this thesis to develop a course of study for pharmacy schools on drug regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A summarization of the history of the development of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and of pharmacy education reveals a lack of interface between the two. The necessity for the interface of pharmacy education and the agency which has significant control over the products forming the basis of the pharmacy profession will be made apparent. A period of residency through which the course of study on drug regulation by the FDA was to …

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel Jan 1954

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel

Theses and Dissertations

The problem for this thesis was undertaken because of an intense interest which the writer has in general Western History and more particularly in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the thousands of emigrants moved west to make their homes, they brought with them only enough supplies to support themselves for a relatively short time. When those supplies were gone they needed replacements in order not to bring hardships to the settlers. Where were these precious supplies to come from? Some few principally agricultural products could be produced, but by far the largest portion …

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this introductory chapter is to make clear the intent of the entire study. First of all, no attempt is made at claiming any distinction for originality, as the information contained herein is gathered from books, magazines, newspapers, conversations with experienced business men and labor men, and some from personal observation.

The present unemployment situation causes many people to question our government's policy of leaving our "gates" open to Mexican immigration. Many are the figures that we hear quoted in an effort to bolster personal views on this problem. Dr. Manual Gamio urges a limitation placed on Mexican …
