Understanding The Link Between Ethanol Production And Food Prices, Nathalia Ferreira Monteiro Jan 2009

Understanding The Link Between Ethanol Production And Food Prices, Nathalia Ferreira Monteiro

Theses

Food prices have increased rapidly in recent years, and so has ethanol consumption. Some studies have claimed that there is a connection between those two. Net exporters of food tend to benefit from higher prices, while regions that are net importers of food, tend to be adversely affected. The large amount of poor countries in the second group justifies an investigation of the causes of increasing food prices. This thesis aims to contribute to the discussion, analyzing, theoretically and empirically, the impact that the diversion of feedstock from food to ethanol production has on food prices. The interaction between food …

Global Warming And The Problem Of Policy Innovation: Lessons From The Early Environmental Movement, Christopher H. Schroeder Jan 2009

Global Warming And The Problem Of Policy Innovation: Lessons From The Early Environmental Movement, Christopher H. Schroeder

Faculty Scholarship

When it comes to influencing government decisions, special interests have some built-in advantages over the general public interest. When the individual members of special interest groups have a good deal to gain or lose as a result of government action, special interests can organize more effectively, and generate benefits for elected officials, such as campaign contributions and other forms of political support. They will seek to use those advantages to influence government decisions favorable to them. The public choice theory of government decision making sometimes comes close to elevating this point into a universal law, suggesting that the general public …

Artificial Transitive Fatty Acid (Tfa) Ban In Restaurants In Us Cities: Nyc-Doh Tfa Ban As A Model For Proactive Public Health Policy, Vidia S. Ramdeen

Master in Public Administration Theses

Today, restaurants, including all eateries that operate within New York City, as well as restaurants across the country, regularly use a rather large amount of an artery-clogging agent, commonly found within their vital ingredients. Artificial transitive fatty acid, or trans-fat as known to the consumer, is the target of the NYC Board of Health and Mental Hygiene, medical experts, and health conscious consumers, for permanent removal from all NYC restaurant menus by July 2008. Specifically, the NYC health code now requires that all establishments holding a NYC Health Department permit, including all restaurants, caterers, stationary hot and cold vendors, and …

Comparing Net And Eri Standardized Exam Scores Between Baccaulureate Graduates Who Pass Or Fail The Nclex-Rn, Mary D. Bondmass, Sheniz Moonie, Susan Kowalski

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

In the United States, nursing programs are commonly evaluated by their graduates success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The purpose of this paper is to describe a change in NCLEX-RN success rates following the addition of standardized exams throughout our program's curriculum, and to compare these exam scores between graduates who pass NCLEX-RN and those who do not. Our results indicate an 8.5% change (p < 0.000) in the NCLEX-RN pass rate from our previous 5-year mean pass rate, and significant differences in standardized test scores for those who pass the NCLEX-RN compared to those who do not (p < 0.03). We conclude that our selected standardized exam scores are able to significantly identify graduates who are more likely to pass NCLEX-RN than not.

The Horseshoe Crab Conundrum: Can We Harvest And Conserve?, Jennifer Mattei, Mark Beekey Apr 2008

The Horseshoe Crab Conundrum: Can We Harvest And Conserve?, Jennifer Mattei, Mark Beekey

Biology Faculty Publications

Horeshoe crabs "Limulus polyphemus" are remarkable ‘living fossils’ which have unique blood cells (amebocytes) that are used to test human vaccines for bacterial contamination. In the 1950’s, scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, not only discovered amebocytes but also found that they had special properties. If the amebocytes came into contact with bacteria, they would instantly coagulate around the bacteria and attack it. The Woods Hole scientists took this unique property of horseshoe crabs and developed a test for bacterial contamination using a horseshoe crab blood derivative called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL).

This article describes discusses …

Does Menopausal Status Influence Sexual Risk? A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The U.S. National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Jessica Marie Armstrong Jan 2008

Does Menopausal Status Influence Sexual Risk? A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The U.S. National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Jessica Marie Armstrong

Digitized Theses

Middle-aged and older adults remain sexually active, but the combination of sexual longevity, inconsistent safe sex practices, and poor condom knowledge, increases their likelihood to risk their sexual health. Menopause may influence sexual risk, as postmenopausal women may engage in risky sexual behaviours, while hormonal changes increase physiological vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections. This project explored whether menopause and type of post-menopause (natural versus surgically- induced) influenced sexual behaviour and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) seroprevalence, using logistic regression modeling of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Controlling for confounding, menopause was negatively associated with number …

The Uses Of Rickets: Race, Technology, And The Politics Of Preventive Medicine In The Early Twentieth Century, M. Allison Arwady

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Rickets, the bone disease classically caused by Vitamin D deficiency, was one of the most common diseases of children 100 years ago. It has been recognized as a disease of urban living and linked to issues of race and culture for generations. This paper uses unpublished patient records from 1904 to 1909 and archival and published materials from multiple community-based trials, including the New Haven Rickets Study (1923-1926), to explore how the definition, diagnosis, and treatment of rickets shifted in the first decades of the twentieth century in the United States. Before 1910, as evidenced by patient records, neither the …

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu Jun 2007

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Over the past decades, the forces of globalization have helped created a huge wave of immigration. The relationship between globalization and immigration has been intensely examined in the last decade with a focus not only on whether and how much globalization has caused international immigration but also how to promote and sustain a just global system for the growing number of immigrants. This study selects three developed countries with different welfare state philosophies and traditions-Australia, Sweden and the United States-and compares how they cope with the growing number of immigrants and their various needs. This paper reflects thinking about states' …

Sociodemographic Characteristics And Diabetes Predict Invalid Self-Reported Non-Smoking In A Population-Based Study Of U.S. Adults, Monica A. Fisher, George W. Taylor, Brent J. Shelton, Sara M. Debanne

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Nearly all studies reporting smoking status collect self-reported data. The objective of this study was to assess sociodemographic characteristics and selected, common smoking-related diseases as predictors of invalid reporting of non-smoking. Valid self-reported smoking may be related to the degree to which smoking is a behavior that is not tolerated by the smoker's social group.

METHODS: True smoking was defined as having serum cotinine of 15+ng/ml. 1483 "true" smokers 45+ years of age with self-reported smoking and serum cotinine data from the Mobile Examination Center were identified in the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Invalid non-smoking was …

Regulatory Beneficiaries And Informal Agency Policymaking, Nina A. Mendelson Jan 2007

Regulatory Beneficiaries And Informal Agency Policymaking, Nina A. Mendelson

Articles

Administrative agencies frequently use guidance documents to set policy broadly and prospectively in areas ranging from Department of Education Title IX enforcement to Food and Drug Administration regulation of direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising. In form, these guidances often closely resemble the policies agencies issue in ordinary notice-and-comment rulemaking. However, guidances are generally developed with little public participation and are often immune from judicial review. Nonetheless, guidances can prompt significant changes in behavior from those the agencies regulate. A number of commentators have guardedly defended the current state of affairs. Though guidances lack some important procedural safeguards, they can help agencies supervise …

Paleoecology Of Pleistocene Megafauna In Southern Nevada, Usa: Isotopic Evidence For Browsing On Halophytic Plants, Lael Vetter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Stable isotopic techniques are emergent as a powerful reconstructive tool in Neogene paleoecology. The Las Vegas Valley in southern Nevada contains one of few diverse Late Pleistocene fossil assemblages in the Mojave Desert. This study investigates the diet of four megafaunal genera (Mammuthus, Equus, Bison, and Camelops) using delta 13C signatures preserved in tooth enamel. Results from serial sampling are also presented as a subannual record of dietary variation and seasonality. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the three grazing genera (Mammuthus, Equus, and Bison) consumed C3 and C 4 grasses in the naturally occurring proportion, which consisted primarily of C3 …
