Our Sister Republic: Creating Mexico In The Minds Of The American Public And The Role Of The Press, Derek Ystebo Jan 2012

Our Sister Republic: Creating Mexico In The Minds Of The American Public And The Role Of The Press, Derek Ystebo

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

During the Mexican War, Americans radically transformed their ideas about Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. The Mexican War offered itself up as the first of such interactions between the neighboring republics. The Mexican during the War was met largely with criticism from the American public, a criticism aided by the work of the press. While a vast majority of the presses disparaged the Mexican populace on a variety of subjects, not all papers denigrated the Mexicans as some inferior population in need of assistance from the United States in order to survive and reach a proper level of civilization. Papers such as …

Comparing Newspaper Coverage Of Climate Change During Election Campaigns In The United States, Canada And Australia, Dan Rowe

Mass Communications - Dissertations

This study compares newspaper coverage of climate change and global warming during the national elections in Australia, Canada and the U.S. during 2007 and 2008. Using a census of newspaper coverage and in-depth interviews with reporters, editors and columnists in the three countries, the study confirmed the findings of earlier studies that the political agenda shapes the news agenda when it comes to climate change coverage. However, the study did find that coverage of general climate change stories continued during the election campaign periods in the three countries. Reporters who cover either politics or environmental issues or both found it …

Medical Malpractice And Compensation In Global Perspective: How Does The U.S. Do It?, David A. Hyman, Charles Silver Dec 2011

Medical Malpractice And Compensation In Global Perspective: How Does The U.S. Do It?, David A. Hyman, Charles Silver

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article describes the problem of health care error in the United States of America and the various regulatory, liability, and compensation systems that deal with medical mistakes. In terms of frequency, direct costs, and aggregate social costs, the problem of medical errors is staggering. Millions of patients are killed or injured every year. A large percentage of adverse events could be avoided by the use of reasonable care. Regulators have not dealt with these problems effectively. Regulators specifically appointed to police the medical profession are often lax, whether because of capture, or from a sense of "there but for …

Using International Human Rights Law To Combat Racial Discrimination In The U.S. Criminal Justice System., Terrence Rogers Dec 2011

Using International Human Rights Law To Combat Racial Discrimination In The U.S. Criminal Justice System., Terrence Rogers

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Statistics tend to show Black people commit most of the crime in the United States. Those statistics fail to account for unequal treatment of minorities at each stage of the criminal justice system. This unequal treatment may take the form of buy-and-bust operations, racial profiling, street sweeps, and other police activities which target people in low-income communities populated mainly by minorities. The American criminal justice system contains a cyclical, self-perpetuating aspect to the treatment of certain minorities. These perceptions direct a disproportionate amount of law enforcement attention on minorities, which leads to disproportionate arrests of minorities. The result shows racial …

The fashion of the era was truly representative of the events happening in the world in a most visible way. This era made indelible marks on future designers and the science of fashion as the world knows it. Fashion and costume design were influenced and changed due to the many limitations presented and imposed by WWII. WWII represents a great marker of change socially, technologically, economically, and politically. While it affected the entire world, the main focus of this thesis will explore the …

The Impact Of Age, Education, Political Knowledge And Political Context On Voter Turnout, Roy Edward Snyder Iii

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The following study will present an examination of factors that impact levels of voting activity among American citizens from 1972 through 2004. The subject of voter turnout has been thoroughly examined by political scientists over the years, as have aspects of youth voting and the influence of education. Many of the same variables presented by scholars in recent years will be employed in this study. However, these earlier studies tend to look only at individual level variables in explaining voter turnout. This study will contribute to a more complete understanding of voting through the analysis of individual, regional, and temporal …

A Case Report Of Folie'a Deux: Husband-And-Wife, Ryan M. Nishihara, Craig T. Nakamura

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Shared paranoid disorder is a relatively rare psychiatric disorder in which paranoid delusions are transferred from one individual to one or more other susceptible person(s) in close association. Folie a deux describes a shared paranoid disorder involving two people and is characterized by a complex dependant relationship between the involved individuals. Provided there is no additional underlying psychopathology, there is a good prognosis for the submissive partner. Here we present a case report and discussion off folie a deux involving a husband and wife. Although folie a deux is a relatively uncommon disorder, it is important to recognize such cases …

This paper reviews the literature pertaining to the separation phenomenon and the emotional experience of hospitalisation for children in an attempt to integrate this knowledge into the diagnosis and treatment of children hospitalized medically and psychiatrically.

Subsequent Pregnancy In Women With A History Of Postpartum Psychosis, Richard G. Hersh, M.D. Nov 2011

Subsequent Pregnancy In Women With A History Of Postpartum Psychosis, Richard G. Hersh, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Postpartum psychosis stands out among the psychiatric syndromes associated with child birth, not able for the variability of its symptom profile and the potential severity of its course, if unrecognized. Significant questions regarding nosology, etiology, prevention and treatment remain only partially answered (1). While controversy surrounds many of the critical issues regarding postpartum psychosis, including its definition, current epidemiologic data indicates severe, frequently psychotic episodes occur following 1-2 per 1,000 of all births (2). As diagnosis and treatment of puerperal conditions have evolved, clinicians now are frequently involved in assisting women with a history of postpartum psychosis with decision making …

This discussion, therefore, intends to shed light on the US sports gaming legal framework, including analysis of the preeminent US laws that regulate the sports gaming industry and a brief review of various sports gaming businesses that fall within the US legal rubric.

Macrophages And Neutrophils From Humans And Mice Kill Larval Strongyloides Stercoralis During Innate Immunity, Sandra Bonne-Annee, Laura A. Kerepesi, Jessica A. Hess Ligas, David Abraham, Phd

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) infects 30-100 million people worldwide, yet little is known about the immune response in humans. Previous studies on innate immunity to Ss in mice have demonstrated a role for eosinophils, neutrophils (PMN) and complement activation in the protective immune response.

The Unconstitutionality Of State Regulation Of Immigration Through Criminal Law, Gabriel J. Chin, Marc L. Miller Nov 2011

The Unconstitutionality Of State Regulation Of Immigration Through Criminal Law, Gabriel J. Chin, Marc L. Miller

Duke Law Journal

The mirror-image theory of cooperative state enforcement of federal immigration law is a phenomenon—one of the most wildly successful legal ideas in decades. The mirror-image theory proposes that states can enact and enforce criminal immigration laws that are based on federal statutes. The theory that it is unobjectionable for a state to carry out federal policy is the basis of Arizona’s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act—better known as SB 1070—and similar laws enacted in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, and Utah. The same theory has provoked the introduction of bills in numerous other states and earlier but more narrowly …

The Homicide Witness And Victimization; Ptsd In Civilian Populations: A Literature Review, Gerald M. Streets, M.D. Oct 2011

The Homicide Witness And Victimization; Ptsd In Civilian Populations: A Literature Review, Gerald M. Streets, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

People who witness the murder of an individual, whether a family member or acquaintance, often experience their loss as a psychic trauma. This described trauma is revealed by the symptom complex defined in the DSM-III-R as post -traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Children, in particular, frequently suffer from debilitating grief, which hinders their emotional and cognitive development. This grief may masquerade as a learning disability, hyperactivity, or an attention deficit disorder. Witnessing murder and being victimized (i.e, rape, incest, and physical abuse) are equivalent experiences in their potential for generating massive intrapsychic conflict. Being poor is a predisposing factor which puts …

Brief Remarks On Some Linguistic Features Of "Empathy" And "Sympathy", Emanuel E. Garcia, Md Oct 2011

Brief Remarks On Some Linguistic Features Of "Empathy" And "Sympathy", Emanuel E. Garcia, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The use of words by an individual or culture is subject to the very same psychological forces that drive man's other activities . Hence, the history of a word's usage becomes a telling record of the mental processes of its creators and users, both conscious and unconscious. Etymology, as Freud has observed in his dreambook (1900), contributes significantly to our understanding of the deeper layers of the psyche . Let us take the word "rival," for example, and see how we may make use of etymological data. It is derived from the Latin "riva lis," I which originally meant "one …

Untangling The Web: Exploring Internet Regulation Schemes In Western Democracies, Renee Keen Oct 2011

Untangling The Web: Exploring Internet Regulation Schemes In Western Democracies, Renee Keen

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment investigates past censorship schemes proposed and implemented by selected democratic administrations, in order to develop an improved framework and accompanying infrastructure that may accomplish the goals that these policies envisioned, but failed to achieve. The difficulty of this undertaking is in developing the intermediate and legally defensible parameters under which a regulation scheme can endure and gain support in a democratic society. The greater difficulty lies in developing a system that can accomplish these objectives in the burgeoning and ever-changing cyber realm. The challenges posed by Internet activity are novel ones, and the legitimacy of the actions taken …

The Justiciability Of Climate Change: Acomparison Of Us And Canadian Approaches, Hugh Wilkins

Dalhousie Law Journal

Climate change-related disputes, which often include novel, complex,or politically sensitive matters, have experienced a mixed reception by the courts. Defendants both in Canada and the United States have raised the issue of justiciabilitythe question of whether a matter is of the quality or state of being appropriate or suitable for review by a court-with some success in attempts to have these cases summarily dismissed. The author reviews the types ofclimate change cases that have been launched, examines the US and Canadian laws of justiciability analyzes the.paths in which the caselaw regarding justiciability in these countries is headed, and suggests how …
